Abstract:Cooperatively bimetallic organic catalysis, coupling actions of two metal centers in a catalytic organic transformation via co‐activation of a single molecule or synergistic activation of two molecules, has witnessed rapid development in the last decades. This cooperative reacting mode creates new catalytic platforms to facilitate the characterization of bimetallic reaction pathways, offers remarkable improvements to some well‐established reactions, or exhibit unprecedented reactivity. Herein, we demonstrate perspectives of some significant contributions in the field of cooperatively bimetallic organic catalysis using dinucleating complexes with late transition metals. Based on different activation modes for the catalysis, the major advances are classified into: (1) bimetallic co‐activation of small molecules; (2) bimetallic co‐activation of single molecules; (3) bimetallic dual‐activation of two molecules. The mechanisms are also discussed to facilitate the understanding of the way of the metal‐metal cooperation involved in the catalytic cycles.

Abstract:Comprising periodically repeating inorganic nodes and organic linkers, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) represent a novel class of porous molecular solids with well-defined pores and channels. Over the past two decades, a large array of organic linkers have been combined with many inorganic nodes to afford a vast library of MOFs. The synthetic tunability of MOFs distinguishes them from traditional porous inorganic materials and has allowed the rational design of many interesting properties, such as porosity, chirality, and chemical functionality, for potential applications in diverse areas including gas storage and separation, catalysis, light harvesting, chiral separation, and chemical sensing. In particular, the molecular functionality and intrinsic porosity of MOFs have rendered them attractive candidates as porous single-site solid catalysts for a large number of organic transformations. MOF catalysts offer several advantages over their homogeneous counterparts, including enhanced stability, recyclability and reusability, and facile removal of the toxic catalyst components from the organic products. Additionally, the highly ordered nature of MOFs leads to the generation of single-site solid catalysts, allowing for precise characterization of the catalytic sites through X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption, and other spectroscopic interrogations and facilitating the elucidation of reaction mechanisms. Thus, MOF catalysis represents a fertile research area that is expected to witness continued growth in the foreseeable future. In this Account, we present our recent research progress in developing ligand-supported single-site MOF catalysts for challenging organic reactions. We present two complementary approaches to the design of ligand-supported MOF catalysts: direct incorporation of prefunctionalized organic linkers into MOFs and postsynthetic functionalization of orthogonal secondary functional groups of the organic linkers in MOFs. Monophosphine-, bipyridine-, β-diketimine-, and salicylaldimine-based ligands have been used to support both precious (Pd, Pt, Ir, Ru) and earth-abundant (Cu, Co, Fe) metals for a number of interesting catalytic reactions. The resulting MOF catalysts feature stable low-coordination species with minimum steric bulk around the active site-a feat that remains a challenge for homogeneous catalysts. For each ligand, we describe types of reactions catalyzed by the MOF in comparison with its homogeneous counterpart. In all cases, MOF catalysts outperformed their homogeneous counterparts in terms of catalyst stability, catalytic activity, and recyclability and reusability. Interestingly, several bipyridine- and salicylaldimine-ligated earth-abundant-metal-based MOF catalysts do not have homogeneous counterparts because the molecular compounds disproportionate or oligomerize to form inactive species in solution. This Account not only presents several interesting designs of ligand-supported single-site MOF catalysts but also provides illustrative examples of how site isolation in MOF catalysts shuts down deactivation pathways experienced by homogeneous systems. With precise knowledge of MOF structures and catalytically active sites, we envision the development of practically useful MOF catalysts comprising tailor-made building blocks that rationally optimize catalytic activities and selectivities.

Abstract:The precise design of catalytic metal centers with multiple chemical states to facilitate sophisticated reactions involving multimolecular activation is highly desirable but challenging. Herein, we report an ordered macroporous catalyst with heterovalent metal pair (HMP) sites comprising Cu-II-Cu-I on the basis of a microporous metal-organic framework (MOF) system. This macroporous HMP catalyst with proximity heterovalent dual copper sites, whose distance is controlled to similar to 2.6 angstrom, on macropore surface exhibits a co-activation behavior of ethanol at Cu-II and alkyne at Cu-I, and avoids microporous restriction, thereby promoting additive-free alkyne hydroboration reaction. The desired yield enhances dramatically compared with the pristine MOF and ordered macroporous MOF both with solely isovalent Cu-II-Cu-II sites. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the Cu-HMP sites can stabilize the Bpin-Cu-II-Cu-I-alkyne intermediate and facilitate C-B bond formation, resulting in a smooth alkyne hydroboration process. This work provides new perspectives to design multimolecular activation catalysts for sophisticated matter transformations.

Abstract:We report the construction of a molecular vise by pairing a tritopic phenylphosphorus(III) linker and a monotopic linker in opposite positions within a metal–organic framework. The angle between these linkers at metal sites is fixed upon changing the functionality in the monotopic linker, while the distance between them is precisely tuned. This distance within the molecular vise is accurately measured by 1H–31P solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Abstract:Metal/ligand in situ assembly is crucial for tailoring the reactivity & selectivity in transition metal catalysis. Cooperative catalysis via a single metal/two ligands is still underdeveloped, since it is rather challenging to harness the distinct reactivity profiles of the species generated by self‐assembly of a single metal precursor with a mixture of different ligands. Herein, we report a catalytic system composed of a single metal/two ligands for a three‐component reaction of polyfluoroarene, α‐diazo ester, and allylic electrophile, leading to highly efficient construction of densely functionalized quaternary carbon centers, that are otherwise hardly accessible. Mechanistic studies suggest this reaction follows a cooperative bimetallic pathway via two catalysts with distinct reactivity profiles, which are assembled in situ from a single metal precursor and two ligands and work in concert to escort the transformation.

Abstract:The emerging atomic‐level synergistic catalysts based on the single‐atom sites and other valuable components, such as atom, cluster, nanoparticle and other nano‐matter, shine in various catalytic fields. They can integrate the advantages of individual catalytic sites and other valuable components to enhance the activity, selectivity and stability of many chemical reactions via activating their key rate‐determining steps and multistep transformations. In addition, because of the ultrahigh atom utilization (~100%) and adjustable microenvironment of metal centers, the single‐atom sites can intelligently construct with other useful large size sites to strengthening in tandem a typical catalytic process. Herein, the structure and mechanism of atomic‐level synergistic catalysts with controllable electronic structures and regulatory reaction processes are presented. We particularly emphasize the interactions between active components of atomic‐level synergistic catalysts and catalytic reaction processes, which are essential for understanding how these catalysts are cooperatively working. It is anticipated that this minireview can make the promotion of advanced atomic‐level synergistic catalysts based on single‐atom sites.

Abstract:AbstractCoordination engineering for single‐atom sites has drawn increasing attention, yet its chemical synthesis remains a tough issue, especially for tailorable coordination structures. Herein, a molecular recognition strategy is proposed to fabricate single‐atom sites with regulable local coordination structures. Specifically, a heteroatom‐containing ligand serves as the guest molecule to induce coordination interaction with the metal‐containing host, precisely settling the heteroatoms into the local structure of single‐atom sites. As a proof of concept, thiophene is selected as the guest molecule, and sulfur atoms are successfully introduced into the local coordination structure of iron single‐atom sites. Ultrahigh oxygen reduction electrocatalytic activity is achieved with a half‐wave potential of 0.93 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode. Furthermore, the strategy possesses excellent universality towards diversified types of single‐atom sites. This work makes breakthroughs in the fabrication of single‐atom sites and affords new opportunities in structural regulation at the atomic level.

Abstract:Transition metal-catalyzed direct C-H functionalization is one of the most efficient and powerful tools for the rapid synthesis of organic molecules. The use of functional groups in the molecules or covalently attached coordinating groups as directing groups has been realized as a major strategy to control the selectivity. Noncovalent interactions are of great importance in the field of molecular biology, supramolecular chemistry, material science and drug discovery. More recently, the use of well-designed ligands to enable the site-selective C-H functionalization via noncovalent interactions has emerged as a highly promising yet relatively less explored strategy. In this perspective, recent advances in this cutting-edge area are summarized. The perspective was classified into four sections according to the type of noncovalent interactions, including hydrogen bonding, ion pair, Lewis acid-base interaction and electrostatic interaction. Emphasis is placed on the mode of noncovalent interactions among the transition metals, ligands and substrates. The limitation of current research and the prospect of future work will also be discussed. We anticipate that this strategy might become a promising complementary strategy to control the positional selectivity in C-H functionalization reactions.

Abstract:Nature is abundant with multi-functional and efficient catalysts such as redox enzymes which scientists wish to emulate with synthetic catalysts. One approach is to tune molecular catalysts through metal-organic ligands but there are grand challenges of molecular catalysts for real applications in energy field. Here we demonstrate a robust inorganic construct based on metal-metal oxide-carbon triple junction nanostructures (ZrO2/Pd/carbon) that mimics the functions of enzymes for highly efficient proton transport. The metal oxide tunes the local acidic environment of the metal and improves its ability for proton transport, efficient adsorption of substrate, and accelerated electron transfer. Using electrocatalytic hydrogenation (ECH) of benzaldehyde as a model reaction, we show that the intrinsic activity of the metal toward hydrogenation reaction is improved by over 200% on the triple junction nanostructured catalysts. This study demonstrates the potential of rational design of multicomponent nanostructured catalysts to achieve enzyme like properties in synthetic catalysts.

Abstract:Metal–ligand cooperation, in which both the metal and the ligand of a transition metal complex actively participate in chemical transformations leading to enhanced reactivity or selectivity in chemical reactions, has emerged as a powerful and versatile concept in catalysis. This Viewpoint discusses the development trajectory of transition metal-based complexes as catalysts in (de)hydrogenative processes, in particular those cases where metal–ligand cooperation has been invoked to rationalise the observed high reactivities and excellent selectivities. The historical context, mechanistic aspects and current applications are discussed with the suggestion to explore the potential of the MLC mode of action of such catalysts in enantioselective transformations beyond (de)hydrogenative processes.

Abstract:Nanozymes have gained significant attention within the scientific community due to their high enzyme-like activity, low cost, high stability, and ease of preparation. Among the various nanomaterials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a type of nanozymes with a unique composition and adjustable structures. By fine-tuning at the atomic level, the catalytic activity and selectivity of MOFs can be improved, thereby expanding their application range in the field of biosensing. Herein, we summarize the recent advances on atomic-level design of MOFs and their derivatives for sensitive biosensing. First, tuning metal ions/cluster actives and organic ligands, constructing defects and introducing axial ligands are focused on optimizing the electronic and geometrical structure of atomic-scale sites. Specifically, the underlying enzyme-like catalytic mechanisms at the atomic scale are demonstrated. Then, MOF-based nanozymes with tuned atomic-scale sites for biosensing of small biomolecules, biomacromolecules and toxic pollutants are summarized. Finally, we provide a summary and outlook on the further refinement of MOFs and their expansion in the field of biosensing applications.

Abstract:Atomistic engineering of active sites with multiple functional motifs has gained significant attention in heterogeneous catalytic science due to their potential synergistic cooperativity. While these catalysts have demonstrated superior performance in various applications, a lack of systematic study hampers the understanding of intricate synergism. In this study, we present a comprehensive investigation into the synergistic cooperativity between a combination of metal sites (M = Fe3+ and Cu2+) and dominant Brønsted acid sites (BASs, X = B, Ga, and Al) in MFI-type zeolites with delicate control over their quantities and respective distribution. By employing two model catalytic reactions that simultaneously utilize the two active motifs in proximity, we examined the cooperativity required to modulate catalytic reactivity. Combined synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction and theoretical evidence revealed the synergism and the respective contribution of the active pairs of metal-BAS within molecular distances.

Abstract:The metal-ligand cooperation (MLC) strategy, which involves synergistic reactivity between metal and ligand for bond activation and catalysis, has become a significant concept in organometallic and inorganic chemistry. This strategy has greatly advanced the use of base metals as effective homogeneous catalysts for organic synthesis and sustainable transformations. In this context, we provide an overview of recent advancements in the study of half-sandwich complexes of iron, nickel, and cobalt with MLC properties, and emphasize their structural properties and reactivity patterns, particularly with regards to bond cleavage and formation. The mechanistic aspects of catalytic processes associated with these complexes are also outlined.
