Abstract:The most critical challenge for the industrial implementation of amine solution CO2 capture is the high heat duty of rich solvent thermal regeneration. Despite significant efforts to lower energy consumption, including employing new amine solvents and process intensification, a novel approach of overcoming this challenge is still demanded. Here, we introduce a novel acid-basic bifunctional catalyst system to reducing the regeneration heat duty by adding metal modified MCM-41 catalyst into amine-based solution. MCM-41 was modified with three metals (Fe, Al, Mo) as well as with different Fe content for catalysis of the rich monoethanolamine (MEA) solvent regeneration process at 98 °C. Results reveal that all the catalysts accelerated regeneration process, and Fe2O3 modified MCM-41 (MFe) catalysts exhibited superior catalytic performance. Notably, the addition of MFe greatly improved the CO2 desorption performance (desorption factor) to 206.3–337.1% compared to the catalyst-free run. The excellent catalytic performance of MFe is ascribed to its improved Brϕnsted acid sites and increased basic sites. Additionally, MFe showed good cyclic stability and its use in the regeneration process enhanced the subsequent CO2 absorption performance. Furthermore, a plausible dual sites mechanism of catalytic amine solvent regeneration over MFe was proposed. Our results demonstrate that the acid-basic bifunctional catalyst plays significant role in developing the amine-based post-combustion CO2 capture technology and has important promise for real-world application.

Synergistic Effects of Amine Functional Groups and Enriched-Atomic-Iron Sites in Carbon Dots for Industrial-Current-Density CO2 Electroreduction

Abstract:Metal phthalocyanine molecules with Me-N-4 centers have shown promise in electrocatalytic CO2 reduction (eCO(2)R) for CO generation. However, iron phthalocyanine (FePc) is an exception, exhibiting negligible eCO(2)R activity due to a higher CO2 to *COOH conversion barrier and stronger *CO binding energy. Here, amine functional groups onto atomic-Fe-rich carbon dots (Af-Fe-CDs) are introduced via a one-step solvothermal molecule fusion approach. Af-Fe-CDs feature well-defined Fe-N-4 active sites and an impressive Fe loading (up to 8.5 wt%). The synergistic effect between Fe-N-4 active centers and electron-donating amine functional groups in Af-Fe-CDs yielded outstanding CO2-to-CO conversion performance. At industrial-relevant current densities exceeding 400 mA cm(-2) in a flow cell, Af-Fe-CDs achieved >92% selectivity, surpassing state-of-the-art CO2-to-CO electrocatalysts. The in situ electrochemical FTIR characterization combined with theoretical calculations elucidated that Fe-N-4 integration with amine functional groups in Af-Fe-CDs significantly reduced energy barriers for *COOH intermediate formation and *CO desorption, enhancing eCO(2)R efficiency. The proposed synergistic effect offers a promising avenue for high-efficiency catalysts with elevated atomic-metal loadings.

Abstract:Amine-functionalized metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a promising strategy for the high-efficiency capture and separation of CO2. In this work, by tuning the ratio of 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (H3BTC) to 5-aminoisophthalic acid (5-NH2-H2IPA), we designed and synthesized a series of amine-functionalized highly stable Ti-based MOFs (named MIP-207-NH2-n, in which n represents 15%, 25%, 50%, 60%, and 100%). The structural analysis shows that the original framework of MIP-207 in the MIP-207-NH2-n (n = 15%, 25%, and 50%) MOFs remains intact when the mole ratio of ligand H3BTC to 5-NH2-H2IPA is less than 1 to 1 in the resulting MOFs. By the introduction of amino groups, MIP-207-NH2-25% demonstrates outstanding CO2 capture performance up to 3.96 and 2.91 mmol g−1, 20.7% and 43.3% higher than those of unmodified MIP-207 at 0 and 25 °C, respectively. Furthermore, the breakthrough experiment indicates that the dynamic CO2 adsorption capacity and CO2/N2 separation factors of MIP-207-NH2-25% are increased by about 25% and 15%, respectively. This work provides an additional strategy to construct amine-functionalized MOFs with the maintenance of the original MOF structure and high performance of CO2 capture and separation.

Abstract:This study aimed to improve the carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) capture and kinetics performance for direct air capture (DAC) while demonstrating the amine grafting reaction principles and its constraints using N-(2-aminoethyl)ethanolamine (AEEA) to functionalize coordinatively unsaturated metal sites in MIL-100(Fe), UiO-66(Zr), and MIL-100(Cr). Grafting experiments indicated that the graft ing process is the reaction between metal sites and secondary amines of AEEA , resulting in exposure of the primary amines. Compared with the iron (Fe) and zirconium (Zr), abundant coordinatively unsaturated chromium (Cr) cations in MIL-100(Cr) effectively promote amine grafting without destroying the active site due to the high surface area, pore volume, and pH. Furthermore, an amine with multiple types of amine groups in the structure has been deemed preferable. Moreover, the adsorbed CO 2 amounts of MF-Cr-AEEA at 400 ppm were 1.91 mmol/g of -25 ℃ and 2.42 mmol/g of 0 ℃, and the structural decomposition temperature exceeded 400 ℃, demonstrating excellent thermal and cold stability. As a result of the better crystal and surface structure, the internal heat and mass transfer processes were accelerated, resulting in low semi-adsorption times below 20 min. Moreover, CO 2 capture cycles were established at 25 ℃ for adsorption and 80 ℃ for desorption. The results show that the adsorption capacity of MF-Cr-AEEA remained 1.86 mmol/g after seven cycles, demonstrating low renewable energy consumption and high stability.

Abstract:A kind of N‐rich auxiliary (i.e., hexamethylenetetramine, HMTA) is successfully introduced into metalloporphyrin metal organic frameworks (MOFs) to synthesize a series of site‐specific functionalized electrocatalysts (HMTA@MOF‐545‐M, M = Fe, Co, and Ni) that can be successfully applied in efficient light‐assisted CO2 electroreduction. The efficient CO2 electroreduction into high‐value products largely relies on the CO2 adsorption/activation or electron‐transfer of electrocatalysts, thus site‐specific functionalization methods that enable boosted related interactions of electrocatalysts are much desired. Here, an oriented coordination strategy is reported to introduce N‐rich auxiliary (i.e., hexamethylenetetramine, HMTA) into metalloporphyrin metal organic frameworks (MOFs) to synthesize a series of site‐specific functionalized electrocatalysts (HMTA@MOF‐545‐M, M = Fe, Co, and Ni) and they are successfully applied in light‐assisted CO2 electroreduction. Noteworthy, thus‐obtained HMTA@MOF‐545‐Co presents approximately two times enhanced CO2 adsorption‐enthalpy and electrochemical active surface‐area with largely decreased impedance‐value after modification, resulting in almost twice higher CO2 electroreduction performance than its unmodified counterpart. Besides, its CO2 electroreduction performance can be further improved under light‐illumination and displays superior FECO (≈100%), high CO generation rate (≈5.11 mol m−2 h−1 at −1.1 V) and energy efficiency (≈70% at −0.7 V). Theoretical calculations verify that the oriented coordination of HMTA can increase the charge density of active sites, almost doubly enhance the CO2 adsorption energy, and largely reduce the energy barrier of rate determining step for the boosted performance improvement. This work might promote the development of modifiable porous crystalline electrocatalysts in high‐efficiency CO2 electroreduction.

Abstract:Amine-functionalized adsorbents offer substantial potential for CO2 capture owing to their selectivity and diverse application scenarios. However, their effectiveness is hindered by low efficiency and unstable cyclic performance. Here we introduce an amine-support system designed to achieve efficient and stable CO2 capture. Through atom-level design, each polyethyleneimine (PEI) molecule is precisely impregnated into the cage-like pore of MIL-101(Cr), forming stable composites via strong coordination with unsaturated Cr acid sites within the crystal lattice. The resulting adsorbent demonstrates a low regeneration energy (39.6 kJ/molCO2), excellent cyclic stability (0.18% decay per cycle under dry CO2 regeneration), high CO2 adsorption capacity (4.0 mmol/g), and rapid adsorption kinetics (15 min for saturation at 30 °C). These properties stem from the unique electron-level interaction between the amine and the support, effectively preventing carbamate products' dehydration. This work presents a feasible and promising cost-effective and sustainable CO2 capture strategy.

Abstract:Electrochemical reduction of CO2 represents an environmental-friendly process that could alleviate the environmental and energy crisis by eliminating greenhouse gasses and generating value-added chemicals. However, industrial-level CO2 reduction to CO suffers from low CO2-conversion efficiency. To address this issue, this work proposes to use acidic electrolytes to avoid carbonate/bicarbonate salt precipitation, and shell for local CO2 adsorption to improve its utilization and thus facilitate electroconversion. An Ag-based metal-organic framework (MOF) is hybridized with Ag, which exhibits near-unity selectivity to CO at an industrial-level current density (500 mA cm(-2)) in acidic media, robust electrochemical stability (100 h) and more importantly, high CO2 con -version efficiency of 42.5 %. Fundamentally, CO(2 )molecules are activated by Ag-MOF via atop adsorption of *CO after uptake by the porous organic complexes. The extraordinary performance originates from multi-scale regulation of CO2 transport from the gas-diffusion layer to the local CO2 adsorption shell near the atomic Ag active center of Ag-MOF.

Abstract:The effect of amine group on the catalytic efficiency of metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) for CO2 cycloaddition with epoxides are studied with newly designed 3D functionalized MOFs. The catalytic performances were compared for the MOFs and the reusability of the synthesized MOFs were also investigated. Catalytic transformation of CO2 into value‐added chemical products can provide an appropriate solution for the raising environmental issues. To date, various metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) with transition metal ions have been explored for CO2 capture and conversion, but alkaline earth metal‐based MOFs are comparatively less studied. Metal ions like Sr(II) having relatively large radius give rise to a high coordination number resulting in higher stability of the MOFs. Moreover, the introduction of N‐rich functional group in organic linker like −NH2, −CONH− and triazole into MOF backbone enhance their CO2 capture and conversion efficiency. Herein, the effect of amine group on the catalytic efficiency of MOFs for CO2 cycloaddition with epoxides under solvent free and ambient conditions are presented. The di‐carboxylates, such as 5‐aminoisophthalate (AmIP) and 5‐bromoisophthalate (BrIP) were utilized to synthesize Sr(II) based MOFs. The Zn(II) MOF was synthesized using tetra‐carboxylate containing amide spacer (OAT) and 4‐amino‐4H‐1,2,4‐triazole (AMT). All three MOFs exhibited porous networks with guest available volume ranging from 15 to 58 %. The catalytic efficiency of the MOFs towards carbon dioxide fixation reaction was explored. The catalytic performances revealed that the presence of amine group in the channels enhances the catalytic efficiency of the MOFs.

Covalent Organic Frameworks with Tunable Co–N–C for High-Performance Carbamate Decomposition Via Sulfonic Modification in Amine-based CO2 Capture

Abstract:Nanowire-like COF support with sulfo group (-SO3H) decoration was designed and synthetized, to offer favourable conditions for atomically dispersing Co atoms (S–Co/NC). The ingenious coordination of sulfo group synergistically improved COF structure and Co–N–C scheme, creating high surface area and excellent catalytic activity. Lab-scale experimental evaluations confirmed that the maximum CO2 desorption rate of spent MEA-solvent increased significantly by 733 % (3.74 CO2 mmol/min) after introducing S–Co/NC catalysts, ascribed to its contribution for proton transfer and C-N break. Bench-scale experiments demonstrated that a mere 0.0125 wt% of catalyst in MEA-solvent substantially decreased the CO2 loading of lean solvent by 17.7 % at low desorption temperatures (120→110 °C), resulting in a 28.8 % reduction in energy consumption. Furthermore, the negligible degradation of catalytic performance during 100-h testing wall-validated the stability and durability of the S–Co/NC catalysts. This work provided a prominent COF-based solid acid catalysts for energy-saving solvent regeneration during amined-based CO2 capture.
Machine Learning Boosted Entropy-Engineered Synthesis of CuCo Nanometric Solid Solution Alloys for Near-100% Nitrate-to-Ammonia Selectivity

Abstract:Nanometric solid solution alloys are utilized in a broad range of fields, including catalysis, energy storage, medical application, and sensor technology. Unfortunately, the synthesis of these alloys becomes increasingly challenging as the disparity between the metal elements grows, due to differences in atomic sizes, melting points, and chemical affinities. This study utilized a data-driven approach incorporating sample balancing enhancement techniques and multilayer perceptron (MLP) algorithms to improve the model's ability to handle imbalanced data, significantly boosting the efficiency of experimental parameter optimization. Building on this enhanced data processing framework, we developed an entropy-engineered synthesis approach specifically designed to produce stable, nanometric copper and cobalt (CuCo) solid solution alloys. Under conditions of -0.425 V (vs. RHE), the CuCo alloy exhibited nearly 100% Faraday efficiency (FE) and a high ammonia production rate of 232.17 mg h-1 mg-1. Stability tests in a simulated industrial environment showed that the catalyst maintained over 80% FE and an ammonia production rate exceeding 170 mg h-1 mg-1 over a testing period of 120 hours, outperforming most reported catalysts. To delve deeper into the synergistic interaction mechanisms between Cu and Co, in situ Raman spectroscopy was utilized for realtime monitoring, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations further substantiated our findings. These results not only highlight the exceptional catalytic performance of the CuCo alloy but also reflect the effective electronic and energy interactions between the two metals.

Abstract:Catalytic amine-based solvent regeneration with solid acid is a feasible option for reducing energy consumption of CO2 capture, but facing crucial challenges on designing material structures and understanding reaction mechanisms. Herein, we cover the nanoscale NiFe2O4 cluster with covalent organic frameworks (COFs), to prepare solid acid catalysts. The pristine chemical bonds of Ni(Fe)-O and Ni(Fe)-Ni(Fe) are substituted by Ni(Fe)N and Ni(Fe)-N-Ni(Fe) by targeting the anchoring of NiFe2O4 cluster over COFs. The created coordination state stimulates the production of Bronsted acid sites. The obtained nanomaterials achieve a considerable improvement in CO2 desorption of up to 290.1 mmol/(min.g) at 88 degrees C for spent monoethanolamine (MEA) solvent, representing a substantial increase of 540% relative to traditional thermal desorption. Consequently, the energy consumption of MEA generation is reduced by approximately 58%. Intermediate species (HCO3-, CO32-, and RNHCOO-) and reaction pathways are established by combining operando Raman spectroscopy and ex situ C-13 NMR spectrum measurements. Theoretical calculations are performed to clarify the transformation mechanism of the acid sites around Ni/Fe atoms and its intrinsic role in the adsorption equilibrium of solvent regeneration.
Sulfonic-coordinated Co–N–C solid acid catalysts for high-performance solvent regeneration for efficient carbon capture

Abstract:Atomically dispersed Co–N–C coordination is a promising strategy for providing acidic activity sites for catalytic amine solvent regeneration, but the control of the coordination environment remains a major challenge. Herein, the sulfo group (-SO 3 H) introduced to improve the Co–N–C coordination and morphology of COF supports. The new coordination configuration (Co–N/C/O) significantly increased the acidic activity of the COF catalysts with single-atom Co and promote the surface areas (696 m 2 /g). The sulfonic-coordinated Co–N–C (S–Co/NC) catalysts exhibited superior spent solvent regeneration activity at lower concentrations compared with previously described catalysts. Moreover, the maximum desorption rate (3.74 CO 2 mmol/min) considerably increased by 733% compared with the catalyst-free reaction, resulting in approximately 39% lower relative heat duty. This study presented an efficient and feasible method for atomic-level tuning of the Co–N–C catalyst for developing excellent solid acid catalysts for energy-efficient amine solvent regeneration.
Nonacid Carbon Materials as Catalysts for Monoethanolamine Energy-Efficient Regeneration

Abstract:In the CO2 capture process, solid acid catalysts have been widely adopted to decrease energy consumption in the amine regeneration process owing to abundant acid sites. However, acid sites unavoidably degenerate in the basic amine solution. To address the challenge, nonacid carbon materials including carbon molecular sieves, porous carbon, carbon nanotubes, and graphene are first proposed to catalyze amine regeneration. It is found that carbon materials can significantly increase the CO2 desorption amount by 47.1-72.3% and reduce energy consumption by 32-42%. In 20 stability experiments, CO2 loading was stable with the max difference value of 0.01 mol CO2/mol monoethanolamine (MEA), and no obvious increase in the relative heat duty (the maximum difference is 4%) occurred. The stability of carbon materials is superior to excellent solid acid catalysts, and the desorption performance is comparable. According to the results of theoretical calculation and experimental characterization, the electron-transfer mechanism of nonacid carbon materials is proposed, which is not only beneficial for MEA regeneration but also the probable reason for the stable catalytic activity. Owing to the excellent catalytic performance of carbon nanotube (CNT) in the HCO3- decomposition, nonacid carbon materials are quite promising to enhance the desorption performance of novel blend amines, which will further reduce the cost of carbon capture in the industry. This study provides a new strategy to develop stable catalysts used for amine energy-efficient regeneration.

Abstract:The electrochemical carbon dioxide (CO2) conversion that employs green energy to transform CO2 into high value-added chemicals has garnered significant research attention as a promising carbon capture and utilization (CCU) technology. Molecular tuning emerges as a promising strategy to effectively regulate the structure of catalysts and manipulate the product selectivity, but the underlying mechanism is still unclear. Therefore, a detailed review of this topic is urgently needed to offer a deeper understanding toward guiding future catalyst design.

Abstract:A supramolecular complexation approach is developed to improve the CO2 chemisorption performance of solvent-lean amine sorbents. Operando spectroscopy techniques reveal the formation of carbamic acid in the presence of a crown ether. The reaction pathway is confirmed by theoretical simulation, in which the crown ether acts as a proton acceptor and shuttle to drive the formation and stabilization of carbamic acid. Improved CO2 capacity and diminished energy consumption in sorbent regeneration are achieved.

Abstract:The unique porous liquid simply assembled by amide bonds promotes the transport of CO2, and the formed amide bonds enrich the electron density of Zr4+ active sites, resulting in the preferential formation of *COOH intermediates that are conducive to CO formation. The highly efficient CO2‐to‐CO photoreduction with 100% selectivity that is difficult to achieve in traditional catalytic systems is achieved. The development of alternative catalytic systems toward high‐performance CO2 photoreduction is considered to be a promising approach to address the future energy demand and reduce the CO2 emissions. However, CO2 molecules are thermodynamically stable in nature, and thus the adsorption and activation of CO2 on the surface of catalysts are the key factors to determine the conversion efficiency. Herein, a porous liquid (NH2‐UIO‐66 PL) is demonstrated for efficiently facilitating the adsorption and activation of CO2 by modification of metal–organic framework (NH2‐UIO‐66) with ionic liquid via amide bonds. CdS/NH2‐UIO‐66 PL exhibits high‐performance CO2‐to‐CO photoreduction with CO yield of 71.37 μmol g−1 h−1 and selectivity of 100%. Experiments and theoretical calculations show that the introduced amide moieties not only enriched the electron density at Zr4+ active sites but also stabilize *COOH intermediate. The achievements provide an effective strategy for the development of metal–organic frameworks for energy catalysis.

Abstract:Different alkylamine molecules were post-synthetically tethered to the unsaturated Cr-III centers in the metal-organic framework MIL-101. The resultant metal-organic frameworks show almost no N-2 adsorption with significantly enhanced CO2 capture under ambient conditions as a result of the interaction between amine groups and CO2 molecules. Given the extraordinary stability, high CO2 uptake, ultrahigh CO2/N-2 selectivity, and mild regeneration energy, MIL-101-diethylenetriamine holds exceptional promise for post-combustion CO2 capture and CO2/N-2 separation.
