Abstract:With the gradual construction of UHV power grid, the low-frequency oscillation problem is increasingly prominent. It is extremely important to grasp the grid oscillation frequency and damping ratio in real time. Prony, ARMA and ERA are three kinds of typical algorithms to identify the power system low-frequency oscillation modes, which are applicable for different damping situations respectively. In this paper, the applicability of the three kinds of identification algorithms under different noise sizes was analyzed with simulation. Taking the actual measured data of power grid as an example, the applicability of the three algorithms was also analyzed in response to the varying degrees of unit oscillation under the excitation of the traction load, and the three algorithms were applied to damping on-line monitoring in power grids. The actual operation results showed that it could effectively recoup the insufficient caused by using single algorithm to realize accurately damping online monitoring.

This paper presents a new method forestimating the oscillation period of power system. Some simulations are given fo r evaluating the influences by system case.harmonics, random noises and oscillation period--change. The results indicate th at this method is much precise for estimatingthe power system oscillation period and will not be influenced by the difference of system cases. It also responds quickly afterthe oscillation period changed.
Detecting Oscillations Via Adaptive Chirp Mode Decomposition.

Abstract:High performance is a fundamental requirement for the maintenance of an industrial plant in face of increasing competitive pressure. Oscillation is one of the most common abnormal phenomena encountered in process industries, thus it is of great importance to detect oscillations before implementing the performance-improvement methods. This paper proposed a novel method based on the adaptive chirp mode decomposition (ACMD) to detect the oscillations in control loops. Firstly, the process variable is decomposed by the ACMD into several chirp modes, called as intrinsic mode functions (IMF). Then, the energy ratio, normalized correlation coefficient, consistency function and sparseness index are combined to identify oscillations contained in these IMFs. The proposed method is automatic and data-driven without requiring any prior knowledge about the underlying process dynamics. Simulation studies demonstrated the detection ability of our approach in five cases, i.e. normal condition, external disturbance, external disturbance and poor tuning, stiction, stiction with external disturbance. Results obtained from this approach on industrial data show that it can be readily implemented in industrial environment.

Abstract:Low-frequency inter-area oscillation is a potentially dangerous phenomenon in power systems involving exchange of power among generators in different areas. In this paper, we study the characteristics of inter-area oscillation by analyzing the distribution of the oscillation energy. First, we introduce equations for the kinetic energy of generators and the potential energy of network branches, derived from the linearization of system dynamic equations. Then, we study the mode composition and the distribution of the generators' kinetic energy during low-frequency oscillations. A modal kinetic energy participation factor is proposed for evaluating the participation of each generator in the oscillation. The relationships among electromagnetic power oscillation distribution, rotor speed deviation, and generator kinetic energy are analyzed and compared to their modal parameter left eigenvectors, right eigenvectors, and linear participation factors, respectively. The bus voltage angle deviation, active power oscillation, and branch potential energy are calculated using the right eigenvector from modal analysis. The distribution characteristics of voltage angle oscillation and branch potential energy in inter-area oscillation is developed. The simulation results for a four-generator two-area system and the New England 10-machine 39-bus system illustrate the feasibility and validity of the proposed theory and method for analysis of inter-area oscillations.

Abstract:Impedance measurement is a practical method to obtain the impedance characteristic of the power electronic equipment (PEE), which is important for the small-signal stability analysis. In the impedance measurement, the measurement results may be influenced by the external noise. Therefore, it is essential to study how to avoid the measurement errors caused by the noise. To address this issue, this paper analyzes the method of suppressing the noise interference by enhancing signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and concludes that there is limitation on improving the measurement accuracy by merely enhancing SNR due to the practical limitation on the perturbation amplitudes. And then this paper proposes an improved impedance measurement method, by which the measurement errors caused by the noise can be decreased effectively. By investigating the influence mechanism of the noise on the impedance measurement results, the measurement error can be divided into average component and fluctuant component. The average component can be eliminated by averaging two groups of measurement results with the phase difference of pi rad while the influence of the fluctuant component can be minimized by employing complex-linear fitting algorithm. Finally, experiments are conducted to verify the effectiveness of proposed impedance measurement method.

Abstract:As an adaptive signal processing method, Hilbert-Huang Transform (HHT) has been widely used in power system. However, when adjacent components are relatively close to each other, mode mixing problem can be easily caused in the decomposition process for EMD, so low-frequency oscillating components can't be effectively extracted. An improved EMD algorithm aiming at the analysis of low-frequency oscillations is introduced in this paper. First, by injecting high-frequency harmonic into the original low-frequency oscillation signal, the distribution of extreme value has been changed, and then the signal is decomposed by EMD. The sub-sequences obtained by EMD decomposition are transformed by Hilbert transform to obtain the modal parameters of low-frequency oscillation. The test signals and simulation examples prove that the injection of high-frequency harmonic could effectively solve the mode mixing problem in the EMD decomposition and provide a method for low-frequency oscillation analysis in the power system.

Abstract:In response to the power oscillation issue of China’s interconnected power grids, the applicability of the Prony method, the autoregressive moving average method and the stochastic subspace method are systematically dis-cussed in this paper. Based on the review of their elementary principles, with the two-area four-machine system and the 36-node benchmark system as examples, these methods are used to estimate the oscillation information from ring-down data and ambient data respectively. Moreover, the influence of external measurement disturbances is also con-sidered. Finally some general conclusions about the applicability of these methods in actual power grids are drawn from the simulation cases.

Abstract:This paper presents an oscillation mode analysis method based on Dynamic Mode Decomposition with Control (DMDc), utilizing measurement data obtained from renewable equipment stations. In this method, a small-amplitude disturbance signal is injected into the Point of Common Coupling (PCC). Three-phase voltage and current signals at the PCC are recorded after the system has reached a steady state. Subsequently, a data-driven approach is employed to construct a reduced-order model of the system, enabling the extraction of oscillation frequency and damping ratio information. Experimental validation has been performed to demonstrate the efficacy of this approach.

Abstract:The line-commutated converter-based high-voltage direct-current (LCC-HVDC) transmission has become one of the main forms to deliver wind power in China. However, due to the connections of a large number of power electronic devices (PEDs), there emerges a risk of sub/super-synchronous oscillations in the DFIG-based wind power base with LCC-HVDC transmission. The existing multi-node system analysis methods have ignored the frequency coupling characteristic (FCC) of PEDs, unable to obtain accurate oscillation characteristics. Besides, the relationship between the oscillation and multi-level factors has not been revealed yet. Therefore, this paper proposes an improved quantitative analysis method of oscillation mode which considers the FCC on the basis of the system admittance network model. Firstly, the impedance model of the system considering the FCC is established. Then, the improved quantitative analysis method of the oscillation mode considering the FCC is proposed and its steps are as follows. 1) To establish the system transfer function matrix considering the FCC, and determine the system stability accurately by the dominant oscillation mode; 2) To define the node oscillation participation factor, considering the effect of the coupling frequency, and quantify the participation degree of each node and identify the origin and weak point of oscillation; 3) To carry out multi-level oscillation mode sensitivity analysis. Finally, the oscillation characteristics and laws of the DFIG-based wind power base with LCC-HVDC transmission are studied, and the time-domain simulations in MATLAB/Simulink validate the analytical results.

Abstract:It is found that the oscillation frequencies in certain ideal and uniform multi-machine system can be equivalent to the frequencies of two separate systems that have two generators respectively. The influence of system parameter on the low oscillation frequency is studied. System frequencies might be comparable under some parameter conditions. When the frequency difference of two system oscillation modes is small and the amplitudes of these two modes in some electric variable are comparable, this electric variable will present differential frequency oscillation with relatively low frequency. Furthermore, if the frequency difference is small enough, the phenomena of ultra low frequency oscillation will result. The condition that the differential frequency oscillation appears is derived and some verification examples are given.

Abstract:Transient energy impulses, which are caused by switching overvoltage, lightning surge and so on, belong to broad spectrum disturbance. They will be changed into decaying resonance by the filtering property of transmission circuits, and give harmful influence to synchronous measurement. This paper derives the estimation expression of pulse disturbed-degree. Combining this expression with the mean square error and its rate of change, etc, an online judgment and estimation method is proposed, which can be used to identify and select those nil or low interfered measurement results in order to correct impulse-disturbed ones. It can suppress the influence of disturbance, and improve gross errors of the power system state estimation. A precision level grade system of measurement results is established, working as the precision guide of data used for the transient analysis and control of the power system.

Abstract:The historical data of wide area measurement system (WAMS) contains the daily record of the number of oscillations. The phenomenon, which the number of these oscillations suddenly increases at a certain frequency, indicates that the risk of weak damping oscillation with this frequency will increase. In other words, the statistical characteristics of these oscillations can reflect the system stability level. In this paper, the formulation of the small signal analysis including power disturbance on the power grid is given firstly. Then the relationship between the oscillation probability and damping ratio is obtained theoretically. Finally, a case study is carried out based on a 10-machine 39-bus power system. Simulation results verify the validity of the expression of oscillation amplitude of tie-line active power and the relationship between the oscillation probability and damping ratio. These theoretical results can be used to guide the power operator to assess the damping level of the power grid based on the daily number of oscillations recored by WAMS.
Estimating The Electromechanical Oscillation Characteristics Of Power System Based On Measured Ambient Data Utilizing Stochastic Subspace Method

Abstract:Estimating low-frequency oscillation modes and the corresponding mode shapes based on ambient data from WAMS measurements has a promising prospect of application in power system analysis and control. The present approaches estimate the modes and mode shapes respectively, which greatly reduce the computational efficiency. Besides, there is no good solution for the problem of discriminating real modes from the spurious ones caused by numerical error. A method based on stochastic subspace method was proposed in this paper. By choosing the angle measurements of all buses as input signals for the method, the modes and simultaneously the corresponding mode shapes of any bus can be estimated conveniently. By introducing the idea of reference channels, the computation complexity was substantially reduced without decreasing the accuracy. Stabilization diagrams technique was introduced to discriminate the real modes from the spurious ones. The test case based on the IEEE-118 system indicated that the method proposed is satisfying in respect of both computational efficiency and accuracy of results.
A Power System Oscillation Property Identifying Method Based on Decomposition of Energy Supply on Port

Abstract:A new method of identifying the power system oscillation property using decomposition of energy supply on the port (ESP) is proposed.Component decomposition of ESP is conducted and found to show that the trend component of ESP changes exponentially under weak damp oscillation while linearly under forced oscillation,respectively.ESP is calculated using the component of dominant mode in electrical variables,which are acquired by empirical mode decomposition (EMD).The trend components of ESPs are also obtained by EMD with the obvious trend component of ESPs fitted by exponential and linear curves,respectively.The correlation coefficients between real trend component and fitting trend component are calculated under two fitting types.The change rule of the trend component is determined by fitting error indices and the correlation coefficient.The oscillation type is identified according to the identified change rule.Finally,the simulation analysis of an IEEE 3 9-bus system and the instance analysis of a real power plant has proved the validity of the proposed method. Abstract:In this paper, a method based on some test signal (Test Signal Method) is developed to find the dominant oscillating frequencies and dampings associated with any generator in the system. The method can be realized easily by time domain simulation using electromechanical transient programs. The theoretical background of the test signal method is the theory of mechanical admittance and mode identification, which is based on the frequency scanning of the test signal and has already been used widely in mechanical engineering. The study cases show that the test signal method developed in this paper can be effectively applied in small signal stability analysis and PSS design.

Abstract:Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) is widely used for real-time data acquisition and condition monitoring in power system, which provides reliable guarantee for the stable operation of power system. The dynamic process may contain low-frequency periodic attenuation components and it may also be low-frequency oscillation when a transient disturbance happens in power system. A correlation identification method for low-frequency oscillation based on PMU data is constructed, which can identify the oscillation mode caused by the short-time disturbance effectively, and can identify the starting time of oscillation by quantifying the oscillation intensity of dynamic process. The feasibility of this method is proved by simulation and identification of actual PMU signals in the substation. This method can identify the parameters of low-frequency oscillation timely and exactly, such as frequency, amplitude, attenuation coefficient, starting and stopping time of dynamic process, when the disturbance occurs in the substation, and it can rebuild the dynamic process of the system from disturbance to recovery, therefore it provides a new way of low-frequency oscillation identification in power system.

Abstract:The advance in the wide-area measurement system (WAMS) is driving the power system to the trend of wide-area monitoring and control. The Prony method is usually used for low frequency oscillation online identification. However, the identified amplitude and phase information is not sufficiently used. In this paper, the amplitude is adopted to detect the occurrence of the oscillation and to obtain the mode observability of the sites. The phase is adopted to identify the oscillation generator grouping and to obtain the mode shapes. The time varying characteristics of low frequency oscillations are studied. The behaviors and the characters of low frequency oscillations are displayed by dynamic visual techniques. Demonstrations on the “11.9” low frequency oscillation of the Guizhou Power Grid substantiate the feasibility and the validation of the proposed methods.

Abstract:Since Prony algorithm has high requirement to the input signal and sensitive to the noise of analysis data, this paper proposes a fuzzy filtering and Prony algorithm combined online identification method for power system low-frequency oscillation. In the proposed method, the wide area measurement signals are the inputs of a fuzzy filter which can cancel the noise rapidly by simple fuzzy logic, and then the low frequency oscillation modes are obtained online by analyzing the digital signal with the improved Prony algorithm. Simulations on the active power oscillation of branch 302245 of Central China Power Grid (CCPG) and comparisons of the method proposed with the traditional method demonstrate that the proposed method can provide relatively precise analysis results.
