Development Phase of Underground Space Utilization in Chongqing Urban District

Abstract:Chongqing underground space has a long history of development,the development of Chongqing underground space presents unique characteristics due to its special history and topography. The use of underground space in Chongqing city started with the establishment of modern shelter and sewer. After the founding of new China,in the center of Chongqing city the municipal pipeline systems and air defense underground works had been set up. In1997,with the commercial center development,there were appeared some underground space projects. The underground civil air defence works were used as underground commercial center,and some high-rise building basements were used as stores and supermarkets,In 2008,Chongqing Urban Planning Department issued the"Guideline of Underground Space Planning in Chongqing Urban and Rural districts( Tentative Standard) ",it is a mark of new phase in underground space development with measures according to local conditions and with large-scale development. The purpose of this paper is to emphasize the role of underground space in city’s development,with study of underground space in the process of urbanization. It points out that the underground space will be important carrier of urban development in future. The use of underground space will boost the development of city with intensive and sustainable development,and will be new challenges and opportunities of the original urban policies,regulations,planning and design.
