STATUS QUO AND IMPROVEMENT OF URBAN UNDERGROUND SPACE USE IN BEIJING CITY: CASE AS SUPPLEMENTARY ACCOMMODATION

Abstract:Underground space in Beijing is large-scale and multifunctional. The population living in underground space is equivalent to urban population of a medium-sized city. The numerous people living in underground space have become an integral part of urban population and made significant contribution to the service industry and the protection of people's livelihood that are critical for urban development. However, the management of underground space needs to be greatly enhanced to deal with the poor underground residential quality and high security risk. Through thorough investigation and data mining, the status of underground space development and accommodation in Beijing are studied. Its size, type and population composition are analyzed and the characteristic features are identified. It shows that the underground space plays a substitute role in satisfying necessary accommodation needs for low-income population. The features and existing problems of underground accommodation are summarized, such as potential safety hazard, inappropriate function and inadequate management. Finally, based on the aim and principle of comprehensive administration of underground space in Beijing, comprehensive solutions of underground space utilization and population size control are proposed, including enhancement of security standard of underground space utilization, improvement of relevant management system and the planning and design of underground space, reduction the situation of long distance between the work place and the residential zone and enhancement of the public urban transportation system.
