Abstract:Hybrid FRP-concrete-steel double-skin tubular colums are a new form of hybrid members recently proposed by the first author. The new column consists of an outer tube made of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) and an inner tube made of steel, with the space between filled with concrete. In this new hybrid column, the three constituent materials are optimally combined to achieve several advantages not available with existing columns. In this paper, the section forms of the new column are first introduced. Results from axial compression tests and four-point bending tests are next presented to demonstrate some of the expected advantages. These test results confirm that the concrete in the new column is very effectively confined by the two tubes, leading to a very ductile response. Based on the stress-strain curves from the axial compression tests, a section analysis for the bending tests is descibed and is shown to predict the test results reasonably closely.

Abstract:A Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) equipment was used to perform the high-strain rate compressive tests on concrete filled steel tubes (CFT) under both room and elevated temperatures. This paper reports the results of load-deformation relationships, the dynamic compressive strength corresponding to different strain rates and temperatures. The results reveal the existence of a steel tube and concrete core interaction mechanism. Although the dynamic yielding strength of CFT specimens under elevated temperatures decreases somewhat with the increasing of temperature, the dynamic ultimate strength decreases little with the elevated temperature. A calculation of the dynamic compression strength for CFT columns under both room and elevated temperatures using the simple additive equations without considering confinement was attempted and shown to yield reasonable underestimation to the test results.

Abstract:Based on the experimental investigation of concrete-filled steel tubular CHS (circular hollow section) connections, a finite element model was established using ABAQUS and verified against test results. It is shown that the developed model predict the ultimate strength and failure mode of test specimens well. Material properties, sizes of weld and contact interaction between concrete and steel were considered in the developed finite element model. Modified Mohr-Coulomb criterion for ductile fracture was used to define fracture criterion of the steel tube. Distribution of shear stress at the punching shear face was examined and a general equation describing stress distribution was proposed. Parametric study was performed to determine the parameters in the proposed equations. Finally, design equations for ultimate strengths of concrete-filled steel tubular CHS connections failed in chord punching shear failure were proposed.

Abstract:The state of the art of concrete-filled steel tubes is presented generally in this paper. The general response of concrete-filled steel tubular columns is discussed with an emphasis on the composite action between the steel tube and its concrete core. The engineering practices of concrete filled steel tubes in industrial works, structural frames and supports, loading bridges, compressive members of truss, subway columns, electricity transmitting poles, spacious construction, high-rise or super high-rise buildings and bridge structures are introduced. Finally, the need for further research, such as behavior of concrete filled steel tubular structures during construction, concrete quality control, steel residual stress effects, creep and fatigue is identified.

Abstract:The loading test was conducted on the double skinned concrete-filled steel tubes.The test specimens were fabricated by filling concrete between the inner and outer steel tubes.Both the inner and outer steel tubes were dodecagonal section.The test specimens were subjected to axial compression and bending, respectively.The failure mode and ultimate strengths of test specimens were obtained.It is shown that local buckling occurs for both inner and outer steel tubes.The test results were compared with design strength, which could be predicted by current standard and equations proposed by other researchers.The double skinned concrete-filled steel tubes have been used in practical engineering projects and obtained economic advantages.

Abstract:A series of tests on the concrete-filled tubular circular hollow section (CHS) connections is presented in this paper. Four types (T, Y, K, and KT) of 12 connections were tested. The tests covered two different chord wall slenderness ratios (D/t) of 60 and 75. The test specimens were first welded by steel tubes to form connections, and then self-compact concrete was filled in the main chord in full length. The material properties of steel and concrete used in the test specimens were measured. Each connection was tested to failure with the branch member loaded in axial tension. Punching shear failure of chord member was the main failure mode observed during the tests. The test results were also compared with current AISC design predictions, which are only for circular hollow section steel tubular connections. The design strengths predicted by the current AISC standard are shown to be quite conservative for the test specimens in this study. Therefore, the contribution of concrete should be considered in the design because it has a significant effect on the ultimate bearing capacity of concrete-filled CHS tubular connections. Abstract:The paper addresses the design of thin-walled centrifugal concrete-filled steel tubes under torsion. An experimental research project was conducted to study the behaviour of thin-walled centrifugal concrete-filled steel tubes under torsion. To further study the structural behaviour of the tubes thoroughly, finite element analyses were performed using ANSYS. The nonlinear finite element model was developed and verified against experimental results. Parametric study was conducted to investigate the effects of different concrete strengths, steel strengths and cross-section geometries on the strength and behaviour of thin-walled centrifugal concrete-filled steel tubes under torsion. The use of high strength steel in thin-walled centrifugal concrete-filled steel tubes under torsion was also investigated. The specimen strengths predicted from the finite element analysis were compared with the design strengths calculated using the AISC and ACI standards. It is also shown design strengths predicted by standards are very conservative. Design method is also proposed based on current standards. It is also shown that design strengths predicted using the proposed method agree with the numerical results well.

Abstract:A series of tests on concrete-filled steel tubes (CFSTs) with reinforcing bars or angles under axial tension were conducted in this study. In total, thirteen full scale specimens having length of 4000mm and outer diameter of 400mm were tested. The steel tubes were fabricated from structural steel with nominal yield strength of 460MPa and nominal plate thickness of 4 or 6mm. Reinforcing bars or angles were placed inside the steel tube before the filling of concrete. The behaviour and strengths of CFSTs with reinforcing bars or angles under axial tension were investigated. The load-axial displacement curves and load-strain curves were obtained. The cracks in the core concrete were also investigated from the failure specimens. The tensile strengths are compared with the design strengths calculated using the current AISC standard. Design equations were proposed for the tensile strengths and elastic tensile stiffness of CFSTs with reinforcing bars or angles.

Abstract:Concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) consists of outer steel tube and concrete in-filled, which combines the merits of steel and concrete. This kind of composite member has various advantages, i.e., high strength and high ductility, favorable cyclic behaviour, high fire resistance and excellent constructability, have been recognized all over the world. Nowadays CFST has been widely used in construction, including many industrial facilities. This paper gives a brief review on the investigations of seismic behaviour of CFST members, joints, planar frames, hybrid walls and high-rise buildings, especially in China. The development of concrete-filled steel tubular members’ family is also introduced. Some industrial projects utilizing CFST members are also presented.

Abstract:Concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) structure offers numerous structural benefits, and has been widely used in civil engineering structures. This paper reviews the development of the family of concrete-filled steel tubular structures to date and draws a research framework on CFST members. The research development on CFST structural members in most recent years, particularly in China, is summarized and discussed. The current design approaches from various countries are examined briefly. Some projects in China utilizing CFST members are also introduced. Finally, some concluding remarks are made for CFST members.

Abstract:The main objective of this paper is to study the behavior and design of thin-walled centrifugal concrete-filled steel tubes under torsion. The thin-walled centrifugal concrete-filled steel tubes were a steel tube with a centrifugal concrete tube inside. A test program has been carried out to study the behavior of thin-walled centrifugal concrete-filled steel tube under torsion. Material properties of the concrete and steel used in the test specimens were measured. In addition, torsion tests were also carried out on the steel tubes. Current design standards are used to predict the specimen strengths under torsion. It is shown that design strengths predicted by standards are conservative. Design method proposed by other researchers for concreted-filled steel tubes under torsion are also used to predict the strengths of centrifugal concrete-filled steel tubes. It is shown that design strengths predicted by other researchers are unconservative.

Abstract:This paper illustrates the characteristic behaviour and mechanism of concrete-filled steel tubes (CFSTs) in terms of the composite action between the steel tube and core concrete, typical failure mode, bearing capacity and ductility, effects of the concrete shrinkage and creep, bond between the steel tube and core concrete, effects of core concrete imperfection, as well as "two-stage design" philosophy. A review is conducted on the research of the CFST members in recent years. Recent major findings to demonstrate the static behaviour of the CFST members under short-term/long-term sustained loading and corrosion, the structural responses of the composite members subjected to cyclic loading and impact, as well as the fire performance of the CFST columns, are evaluated. A number of typical projects utilizing CFST members are reviewed and presented. Finally, the framework of life-cycle based theory, of CFST structures is proposed.

Abstract:A series of stub column tests were performed on thin-walled circle concrete-filled tubes.The test specimens includes hollow steel tubes and concrete-filled tubes.Material tests were also performed on the self-compacting concrete and weather steel used in the test specimens.Test results of experimental phenomenonf,ailure modes and load-displacement curves were recorded and analyzed.The test results indicates that the self-compacting concrete could effectively filled the steel tubes and has required compressive strengths.The failed thin-walled concrete-filled steel tubes specimens shows obvious local buckling deformation.The specimen strengths were compared with design strengths.

Abstract:This paper presents an experimental investigation involving 12 normal strength concrete-filled steel tubes (CFT) and 24 high-strength concrete-filled steel tubes (HSCFT). Experimental phenomena during the tests and failure modes were depicted in details, and the failure mechanism was analyzed. Influence of the parameters including yielding strength of steel, compressive strength of concrete, steel ratio and confining factor on the mechanic properties of axially loaded stocky columns was discussed. Some suggestions were provided for engineering practice by comparing the design methods of the bearing capacities of concrete-filled steel tubes in the different design codes.

Abstract:Tests on twenty-one concrete filled steel tubes to investigate the influence of compaction methods on the strength of concrete filled steel tubular members are reported. Two parameters were investigated, including slenderness ratio and load eccentricity. It was found that better compaction of concrete resulted in higher values of the ultimate strength of concrete filled steel tubular members. The tests show the importance of good concrete compaction for concrete filled steel tubes.
