Abstract:An evaluation method to determine inverse problem of wave equation is discussed,which is a gradual expansion in one-order approaching to the solution. We prove the existence and uniqueness of solution for inverse problem and obtain an estimation with gradual order to the approximate solution.

Abstract:We propose a Ulm-like method for solving inverse eigenvalue problems, which avoids solving approximate Jacobian equations comparing with other known methods. A convergence analysis of this method is provided and the R-quadratic convergence property is proved under the assumption of the distinction of given eigenvalues. Numerical experiments as well as the comparison with the inexact Newton-like method are given in the last section.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the semilinear wave equations with the inverse-square potential. By transferring the original equation to a "fractional dimensional" wave equation and analyzing the properties of its fundamental solution, we establish a long-time existence result, for sufficiently small, spherically symmetric initial data. Together with the previously known blow-up result, we determine the critical exponent which divides the global existence and finite time blow-up. Moreover, the sharp lower bounds of the lifespan are obtained, except for certain borderline case. In addition, our technology allows us to handle an extreme case for the potential, which has hardly been discussed in literature.

Abstract:We consider an inverse problem of recovering a potential associated to a semi-linear wave equation with a quadratic nonlinearity in $1 + 1$ dimensions. We develop a numerical scheme to determine the potential from a noisy Dirichlet-to-Neumann map on the lateral boundary. The scheme is based on the recent higher order linearization method [20]. We also present an approach to numerically estimating two-dimensional derivatives of noisy data via Tikhonov regularization. The methods are tested using synthetic noisy measurements of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. Various examples of reconstructions of the potential functions are given.

Abstract:Variational problem for irrotational, incompressible inviseid fluid in finite water depth is considered. Based on the variational principle, a special solution of the problem is presented under the assumption that the dispersion μ and the nonlinearity ε satisfied ε=O(μ2) as the Lagrange function is expanded up toO(μ8). It is shown that the elevation of the free surface should be expanded to μ4 order to ensure the Lagrange function is in μ8 order. Comparison the nonlinear free surface profiles obtained from the solution with the corresponding ones obtained from linear solutions showed that the wave crest of the nonlinear wave is steepened but the trough is flattened compared to the linear wave as expected.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the inverse source problem for the biharmonic wave equation. Mathematically, we characterize the radiating sources and non-radiating sources at a fixed wavenumber. We show that a general source can be decomposed into a radiating source and a non-radiating source. The radiating source can be uniquely determined by Dirichlet boundary measurements at a fixed wavenumber. Moreover, we derive a Lipschitz stability estimate for determining the radiating source. On the other hand, the non-radiating source does not produce any scattered fields outside the support of the source function. Numerically, we propose a novel source reconstruction method based on Fourier series expansion by multi-wavenumber boundary measurements. Numerical experiments are presented to verify the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method.

Abstract:We propose and study several inverse problems associated with the nonlinear progressive waves that arise in infrasonic inversions. The nonlinear progressive equation (NPE) is of a quasilinear form $\partial_t^2 u=\Delta f(x, u)$ with $f(x, u)=c_1(x) u+c_2(x) u^n$, $n\geq 2$, and can be derived from the hyperbolic system of conservation laws associated with the Euler equations. We establish unique identifiability results in determining $f(x, u)$ as well as the associated initial data by the boundary measurement. Our analysis relies on high-order linearisation and construction of proper Gaussian beam solutions for the underlying wave equations. In addition to its theoretical interest, we connect our study to applications of practical importance in infrasound waveform inversion.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with an inverse wave-number-/frequency-dependent source problem for the Helmholtz equation. In two and three dimensions, the unknown source term is supposed to be compactly supported in spatial variables but independent on one spatial variable. The dependence of the source function on wave-number/frequency is supposed to be unknown. Based on the Fourier-transform and Dirichlet-Laplacian methods, we develop two efficient non-iterative numerical algorithms to recover the wave-number-dependent source. Uniqueness proof and increasing stability analysis are carried out if the boundary measurement data of Dirichlet kind are available. Numerical experiments are conducted to illustrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed methods.

Abstract:This work is devoted to determine appropriate domain and range of the forward map from the coefficients to the solutions of the multi-dimensional wave equation for which the forward map attains certain regularity properties. The first result concerns an explicit upper bound of its linearization or formal derivative and the properties of the coefficients on which the bound depends. In view of results for the smooth coefficient case, the estimate is optimal. We then present recent results on continuity and differentiability of the forward map as well as continuity of the linearized forward map. Information concerning regularity properties of the forward map is indispensable in the study of the inverse problem via smooth optimization methods. The usefulness of our results and some directions for future research are also discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider inverse problems associated with the reduced wave equation on a bounded domain Ω⊂RN(N⩾2) for the case where unknown obstacles are embedded in the domain Ω. We show that, if both the leading and 0-order coefficients in the equation are a priori known to be piecewise constant functions, then both the coefficients and embedded obstacles can be simultaneously recovered in terms of the local Dirichlet-to-Neumann map defined on an arbitrary small open subset of the boundary ∂Ω. The method depends on a well-defined coupled PDE-system constructed for the reduced wave equations in a sufficiently small domain and the singularity analysis of solutions near the interface for the model.

Abstract:A wavelet-differential regularization hybrid inversion algorithm for solving the inverse problem of Maxwell's equations is constructed.The wavelet is applied to separate the original problem into different scales.In the maximum scale the differential regularization method is used to find the initial value of the next scale,in the other scales the iteration processing is carried out to obtain the global minimum point.The algorithm makes use of the respective advantages of the wavelet analyses and the differential regularization method,and possesses a higher global search capability which is showed by the numerical results.

Abstract:We consider a strongly damped wave equation on compact manifolds, both with and without boundaries, and formulate the corresponding inverse problems. For closed manifolds, we prove that the metric can be uniquely determined, up to an isometry, from the knowledge of the source-to-solution map. Similarly, for manifolds with boundaries, we prove that the metric can be uniquely determined, up to an isometry, from partial knowledge of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. The key point is to retrieve the spectral information of the Laplace-Beltrami operator, from the Laplace transform of the measurements. Further we show that the metric can be determined up to an isometry, using a single measurement in both scenarios.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the global existence of the Cauchy problem for the nonlinear viscous wave equation. We apply the approach introduced in Li and Chen (1989) [15] and get the global existence theory directly by using the decaying properties of the solution. Such properties are obtained by long wave–short wave decomposition, Green’s function method and energy estimates. Finally, we show the Lp estimates for the solution by interpolation lemma.

Abstract:We introduce in this document a direct method allowing to solve numerically inverse type problems for linear hyperbolic equations. We first consider the reconstruction of the full solution of the wave equation posed in $\Omega\times (0,T)$ - $\Omega$ a bounded subset of $\mathbb{R}^N$ - from a partial distributed observation. We employ a least-squares technique and minimize the $L^2$-norm of the distance from the observation to any solution. Taking the hyperbolic equation as the main constraint of the problem, the optimality conditions are reduced to a mixed formulation involving both the state to reconstruct and a Lagrange multiplier. Under usual geometric optic conditions, we show the well-posedness of this mixed formulation (in particular the inf-sup condition) and then introduce a numerical approximation based on space-time finite elements discretization. We prove the strong convergence of the approximation and then discussed several examples for $N=1$ and $N=2$. The problem of the reconstruction of both the state and the source term is also addressed.
