Abstract:We study the inverse boundary value problem for the Helmholtz equation using the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map at selected frequency as the data. We develop an explicit reconstruction of the wavespeed using a multi-level nonlinear projected steepest descent iterative scheme in Banach spaces. We consider wavespeeds containing discontinuities. A conditional Lipschitz stability estimate for the inverse problem holds for wavespeeds of the form of a linear combination of piecewise constant functions with an underlying domain partitioning, and gives a framework in which the scheme converges. The stability constant grows exponentially as the number of subdomains in the domain partitioning increases. To mitigate this growth of the stability constant, we introduce hierarchical compressive approximations of the solution to the inverse problem with piecewise constant functions. We establish an optimal bound of the stability constant, which leads to a condition on the compression rate pertaining to these approximations.
Reconstruction of the solution and the source of hyperbolic equations from boundary measurements: mixed formulations

Abstract:We introduce a direct method allowing to solve numerically inverse type problems for linear hyperbolic equations. Abstract:We study the inverse boundary value problem for the wave equation and recovery of the wavespeedupon taking a time-Fourier transform of the data. We design a hierarchical compressed reconstruction in a multi-level scheme for the inverse boundary value problem associated with the Helmholtz equation using the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map, or the single-layer potential operator, at selected frequencies as the data. The compression isbased on a domain partitioning of the subsurface, while the hierarchy is straightforwardedly established throughrefinement. The coefficients are assumed to be piecewise constant functions following the domain partitioning, thusallowing the presence of conormal singularities (causing reflections and diffractions); these guarantee a Lipschitzstability estimate for the inverse problem which gives a radius of convergence, related to the stability constant, of thescheme even in the case of partial data. The stability constant grows exponentially with the number of subdomainsin the domain partitioning, whence the compression. The frequencies are selected to control the approximationerrors in the data due to the compression at the different levels in the scheme. The stability constants (number ofsubdomains) and approximations errors (frequencies) are coupled through a condition between levels for convergenceof the multi-level scheme. We use Haar wavelets for the compression in alternative strategies providing a gradualincrease in the number of subdomains in the domain parititioning via adaptive, local multi-scale refinement. Weinclude visco-acoustic behavior and carry out numerical experiments.

Abstract:We consider a heat equation and a wave equation in one spatial dimension. This article deals with the inverse problem of determining the size of the spatial interval from some extra boundary information on the solution. Under several different circumstances, we prove uniqueness, non-uniqueness and some size estimates. Moreover, we numerically solve the inverse problems and compute accurate approximations of the size. This is illustrated with several satisfactory numerical experiments.

Abstract:Even when the partial differential equation underlying a physical process can be evolved forward in time, the retrospective (backward in time) inverse problem often has its own challenges and applications. Direct Adjoint Looping (DAL) is the defacto approach for solving retrospective inverse problems, but it has not been applied to deterministic retrospective Navier--Stokes inverse problems in 2D or 3D. In this paper, we demonstrate that DAL is ill-suited for solving retrospective 2D Navier--Stokes inverse problems. Alongside DAL, we study two other iterative methods: Simple Backward Integration (SBI) and the Quasi-Reversible Method (QRM). Our iterative SBI approach is novel while iterative QRM has previously been used. Using these three iterative methods, we solve two retrospective inverse problems: 1D Korteweg--de Vries--Burgers (decaying nonlinear wave) and 2D Navier--Stokes (unstratified Kelvin--Helmholtz vortex). In both cases, SBI and QRM reproduce the target final states more accurately and in fewer iterations than DAL. We attribute this performance gap to additional terms present in SBI and QRM's respective backward integrations which are absent in DAL.

Abstract:We add a time-dependent potential to the inhomogeneous wave equation and consider the task of reconstructing this potential from measurements of the wave field. This dynamic inverse problem becomes more involved compared to static parameters, as, e.g. the dimensions of the parameter space do considerably increase. We give a specifically tailored existence and uniqueness result for the wave equation and compute the Fréchet derivative of the solution operator, for which also show the tangential cone condition. These results motivate the numerical reconstruction of the potential via successive linearization and regularized Newton-like methods. We present several numerical examples showing feasibility, reconstruction quality, and time efficiency of the resulting algorithm.

Abstract:We present a rigorous mathematical analysis of the modeling of inviscid water waves. The free-surface is described as a parametrized curve. We introduce a numerically stable algorithm which accounts for its evolution with time. The method is shown to converge using approximate solutions, such as Stokes waves and Green-Naghdi solitary waves. It is finally tested on a wave breaking problem, for which an odd-even coupling suffices to achieve numerical convergence up to the splash without the need for additional filtering.

Abstract:We consider an inverse problem of recovering a potential associated to a semi-linear wave equation with a quadratic nonlinearity in $1 + 1$ dimensions. We develop a numerical scheme to determine the potential from a noisy Dirichlet-to-Neumann map on the lateral boundary. The scheme is based on the recent higher order linearization method [20]. We also present an approach to numerically estimating two-dimensional derivatives of noisy data via Tikhonov regularization. The methods are tested using synthetic noisy measurements of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. Various examples of reconstructions of the potential functions are given.

Topological Methods in Nonlinear Analysis

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the reconstruction of the support of the potential term for a time-fractional diffusion equation from the final measured data. The aim of this paper is to propose an accurate approach based on the topological derivative method. The idea is to formulate the reconstruction problem as a topology optimization one minimizing a given cost function. We derive a topological asymptotic expansion for the fractional model. The unknown support is reconstructed using the level-set curve of the topological gradient. We finally make some numerical examples proving the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:We derive the extension of the classical d'Alembert formula for the wave equation, which provides the analytical solution for the direct scattering problem for a medium with constant refractive index; this is achieved by employing results obtained via the Fokas method. This methodology is further extended to a medium with piecewise constant refractive index, providing the apparatus for the solution of the associated inverse scattering problem. Hence, we provide an exact reconstruction method which is valid for both full and phaseless data.

Robust Wavefield Inversion via Phase Retrieval

Abstract:Extended formulation of Full Waveform Inversion (FWI), called Wavefield Reconstruction Inversion (WRI), offers potential benefits of decreasing the nonlinearity of the inverse problem by replacing the explicit inverse of the ill-conditioned wave-equation operator of classical FWI (the oscillating Green functions) with a suitably defined data-driven regularized inverse. This regularization relaxes the wave-equation constraint to reconstruct wavefields that match the data, hence mitigating the risk of cycle skipping. The subsurface model parameters are then updated in a direction that reduces these constraint violations. However, in the case of a rough initial model, the phase errors in the reconstructed wavefields may trap the waveform inversion in a local minimum leading to inaccurate subsurface models. In this paper, in order to avoid matching such incorrect phase information during the early WRI iterations, we design a new cost function based upon phase retrieval, namely a process which seeks to reconstruct a signal from the amplitude of linear measurements. This new formulation, called Wavefield Inversion with Phase Retrieval (WIPR), further improves the robustness of the parameter estimation subproblem by a suitable phase correction. We implement the resulting WIPR problem with an alternating-direction approach, which combines the Majorization-Minimization (MM) algorithm to linearise the phase-retrieval term and a variable splitting technique based upon the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM). This new workflow equipped with Tikhonov-total variation (TT) regularization, which is the combination of second-order Tikhonov and total variation regularizations and bound constraints, successfully reconstructs the 2004 BP salt model from a sparse fixed-spread acquisition using a 3~Hz starting frequency and a homogeneous initial velocity model.

Abstract:The present work focuses on the numerical approximation of the weak solutions of the shallow water model over a non-flat topography. In particular, we pay close attention to steady solutions with nonzero velocity. The goal of this work is to derive a scheme that exactly preserves these stationary solutions, as well as the commonly preserved lake at rest steady solution. These moving steady states are solution to a nonlinear equation. We emphasize that the method proposed here never requires solving this nonlinear equation; instead, a suitable linearization is derived. To address this issue, we propose an extension of the well-known hydrostatic reconstruction. By appropriately defining the reconstructed states at the interfaces, any numerical flux function, combined with a relevant source term discretization, produces a well-balanced scheme that preserves both moving and non-moving steady solutions. This eliminates the need to construct specific numerical fluxes. Additionally, we prove that the resulting scheme is consistent with the homogeneous system on flat topographies, and that it reduces to the hydrostatic reconstruction when the velocity vanishes. To increase the accuracy of the simulations, we propose a well-balanced high-order procedure, which still does not require solving any nonlinear equation. Several numerical experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the numerical scheme.

Abstract:We study the seismic inverse problem for the recovery of subsurface properties in acoustic media. In order to reduce the ill-posedness of the problem, the heterogeneous wave speed parameter to be recovered is represented using a limited number of coefficients associated with a basis of eigenvectors of a diffusion equation, following the regularization by discretization approach. We compare several choices for the diffusion coefficient in the partial differential equations, which are extracted from the field of image processing. We first investigate their efficiency for image decomposition (accuracy of the representation with respect to the number of variables and denoising). Next, we implement the method in the quantitative reconstruction procedure for seismic imaging, following the Full Waveform Inversion method, where the difficulty resides in that the basis is defined from an initial model where none of the actual structures is known. In particular, we demonstrate that the method is efficient for the challenging reconstruction of media with salt-domes. We employ the method in two and three-dimensional experiments and show that the eigenvector representation compensates for the lack of low frequency information, it eventually serves us to extract guidelines for the implementation of the method.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the numerical treatment of inverse heat conduction problems. In particular, we combine recent results on the regularization of ill-posed problems by iterated soft shrinkage with adaptive wavelet algorithms for the forward problem. The analysis is applied to an inverse parabolic problem that stems from the industrial process of melting iron ore in a steel furnace. Some numerical experiments that confirm the applicability of our approach are presented.

Abstract:A key difficulty in the analysis and numerical approximation of the shallow water equations is the nonconservative product of measures due to the gravitational force acting on a sloped bottom. Solutions may be nonunique, and numerical schemes are not only consistent discretizations of the shallow water equations, but they also determine how to model the physics. Our derivation is based on a subcell reconstruction using infinitesimal singular layers at the cell boundaries, as inspired by S. Noelle, Y. Xing, and C.-W. Shu [J. Comput. Phys., 226 (2007), pp. 29-58]. One key step is to separate the singular measures. Another aspect is the reconstruction of the solution variables in the singular layers. We study three reconstructions. The first leads to the well-known scheme of Audusse et al., [SIAM J. Sci. Comput., 25 (2004), pp. 2050-2065], which introduces the hydrostatic reconstruction. The second is a modification proposed in [T. Morales de Luna, M. J. Castro Diaz, and C. Pares, Appl. Math. Comput., 219 (2013), pp. 90120-9032], which analyzes whether a wave has enough energy to overcome a step. The third is our new scheme, which borrows its structure from the wet-dry front. For a number of cases discussed in recent years, where water runs down a hill, Audusse's scheme converges slowly or fails. Morales' scheme gives a visible improvement. Both schemes are clearly outperformed by our new scheme.

Abstract:This paper provides a theoretical foundation for some common formulations of inverse problems in wave propagation, based on hyperbolic systems of linear integro-differential equations with bounded and measurable coefficients. The coefficients of these time-dependent partial differential equations respresent parametrically the spatially varying mechanical properties of materials. Rocks, manufactured materials, and other wave propagation environments often exhibit spatial heterogeneity in mechanical properties at a wide variety of scales, and coefficient functions representing these properties must mimic this heterogeneity. We show how to choose domains (classes of nonsmooth coefficient functions) and data definitions (traces of weak solutions) so that optimization formulations of inverse wave problems satisfy some of the prerequisites for application of Newton's method and its relatives. These results follow from the properties of a class of abstract first-order evolution systems, of which various physical wave systems appear as concrete instances. Finite speed of propagation for linear waves with bounded, measurable mechanical parameter fields is one of the by-products of this theory.
