Abstract:Objective: To analyze occurence time,involvement site, diagnosis and treatment of multiple primary cancers in the oral and maxillofacial region.Methods: 9 patients(6 men,3 women) with multiple primary cancers who were treated between January 1993 and December 2004 at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery(Affiliated Stomatology Hospital,Medical School Nanjing University) were retrospectively reviewed.The patients ranged in age from 49 to 70 years with a mean age of 60.4 years.8 patients received radical treatment while 1 patient underwent palliative treatment.Results: 9 cases were metachronous cancers.The mean interval from a first primary cancer to a second primary cancer was 107.4 months.The different locations of multiple primary cancers were as follows: 1 case of cheek + soft palate,1 case of tongue + palate,5 cases of nasopharynx +oral cavity,1 case of oral cavity +inferior neck,and 1 case of esophagus+oral cavity.The histologic types of multiple primary cancers were as follows: 6 cases of squamous cell carcinoma + squamous cell carcinoma,2cases of malignant lymphoma + squamous cell carcinoma,and 1 case of squamous cell carcinoma + malignant melanoma.8 patients developed secondary primary cancers and one presented with triple primary cancer.Conclusion: Long-term meticulous follow-up after treatment of first primary cancers is required to detect early-stage multiple primary cancers which should be distinguished from recurrent or metastatic cancers,and to provide effective treatment as early as possible.
Clinical and prognostic features of multiple primary cancers with oral squamous cell carcinoma

Abstract:Objective: To characterize the epidemiological, clinical, and prognostic features of multiple primary cancers (MPC) following oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Design: Data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program database were analyzed to determine the standardized incidence ratio (SIR) of multiple subsequent sites, difference in clinical and prognostic features between MPC and single primary OSCC. Results: The sites with the highest SIRs were the oral cavity (SIR = 69.48), other oral cavity and pharynx (SIR=55.46), pharynx (SIR=39.21), tonsils (SIR=33.52), trachea (SIR=33.24), esophagus (SIR=18.00), and larynx (SIR=13.12). The 5- and 10-year survival rates for single primary OSCC were 57.9% (95% CI: 56.7-59.2%) and 47.1% (95% CI: 45.7-48.6%), respectively, while those for MPC were 66.9% (95% CI: 64.6-69.4%) and 42.2% (95% CI: 39.5-45.2%), respectively. The mean age of MPC patients was significantly higher than that of single primary OSCC patients. MPC are more common in the gums and other sites of the oral cavity, and more likely to be detected in early TNM stage and pathological grade. Age, site, T-stage, and N-stage were significantly associated with prognosis of MPC. Conclusions: Significant differences in clinical and prognostic features were found between MPC and single primary OSCC. Considering MPC has a poor long-term prognosis, it is necessary to identify MPC and single primary OSCC early.
Clinical characteristics of multiple primary malignant tumors in 63 patients with hypopharyngeal carcinoma

Abstract:Objective To investigate the prevalence,clinical features,treatment and prognosis of hypopharyngeal carcinoma associated with multiple primary malignant tumors (MPMT).Methods A retrospective analysis of clinical data was performed in 476 patients with hypopharyngeal carcinoma who underwent curative resection between January 2005 and December 2015.According to the diagnosis standard of MPMT,patients were classified into MPMT group and single cancer group.Results MPMT were detected in 63 patients (13.2％).All of the cases had two primary cancers.Fourteen patients had synchronous cancers and 49 patients had metachronous cancers.For metachronous group,the time interval between the first and secondary primary cancer was from 8 months to 20 years.Forty-eight cases (76.2％) were diagnosed with MPMT within 5 years.The most common site of MPMT was the esophagus (35 cases,55.6％),followed by the lung (5 cases,7.9％).Patients with MPMT were predominantly died of primary tumor of other site.The 3-year and 5-year overall survival (OS) rates of patients with MPMT were 45.5％ and 33.3％,respectively.The 3-year and 5-year OS rates of patients with single cancer were 47.7％ and 35.2％,respectively.Conclusions MPMT most commonly occurs in the esophagus in patients with hypopharyngeal carcinoma.MPMT has high incidence within five years and can affect the prognosis of hypopharyngeal carcinoma.A close and long-term follow-up for occurrence of MPMT after curative treatment for hypopharyngeal carcinoma is necessary.

Abstract:AIM:To investigate the clinical features, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of multiple primary colorectal carcinomas (MPCC).METHODS:A retrospective analysis of 37 patients with MPCC from 1974 to 1998 was carried out.RESULTS:The incidence of MPCC was 2.74%(37/1 348) in patients with primary colorectal carcinomas, 15 cases of them were patients with synchronous carcinomas (SC) and 22 cases were diagnosed as metachronous carcinomas (MC). Most tumors were located in the right colon and rectum. Fifty-five percent (12/22) of MC were diagnosed within 3 years after tumor resection and 41%(9/22) of MC occurred after 8 years. Radical resections were performed in all patients except for 1 case. The 5-year survival rate of SC was 72.7%(8/11) and that of MC after the first cancer and second cancer was 71.4%(15/21) and 38.9%(7/18), respectively.CONCLUSION:The results indicate the importance of complete preoperative examination, careful intraoperative exploration and periodic postoperative surveillance. Early diagnosis and radical resection can increase survival rate of MPCC.

Abstract:Objective:To explore the epidemiological and pathological characteristics of multiple primary malignant tumors (MPMTs) accompanied with colorectal malignancies.Methods:The MPMTs patients with colorectal malignant tumors admitted to the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine from January 2013 to December 2019 were screened, and the data of gender, age, onset interval, lesion distribution, TNM stage, and pathological type were collected. Then we analyzed the epidemiological characteristics and clinicopathological characteristics.Results:A total of 235 MPMTs patients with colorectal malignancies were treated, accounting for 4.00% of the 5878 patients with colorectal malignancies during the same period. There were 154 males and 81 females, with a male-to-female ratio of 1.90∶1. The median age at diagnosis of the first primary cancer was 64 years. There were 90 synchronous multiple primary carcinomas (SC) patients (38.30%) and 145 metachronous multiple primary carcinomas (MC) patients (61.70%), and the age of first primary cancer diagnosis in SC patients was older than that in MC patients (65 and 62 years, respectively, P=0.022). The median onset interval was 13.25 months (95% CI: 19.61, 27.23 months), and the age at diagnosis of the first primary cancer was negatively correlated with the onset interval ( r=-0.224, P<0.001). There were 257 colorectal malignant tumor lesions in 235 patients, which were distributed in all intestinal segments. The TNM stages were mainly Ⅱ and Ⅲ, and the pathological type was mainly adenocarcinoma. There were no significant differences in the distribution of intestinal segments, TNM stages and pathological types of colorectal malignant tumors between the SC group and the MC group (all P>0.05). There were 234 extraintestinal lesions, mainly distributed in the lung (48), stomach (45), and liver and gallbladder (25). The proportion of extraintestinal lesions located in the stomach of SC patients was 32.18% (28/87), which was higher than that of MC patients [11.56% (17/147), P<0.001]; the proportion of extraintestinal lesions located in the thyroid of SC patients was 2.30% (2/87), lower than that of MC patients [10.20% (15/147), P=0.024]. Conclusions:Approximately 4% of patients with colorectal malignant tumors suffer from two or more malignant tumors, slightly higher in male than in female, and slightly higher in MC patients than in SC patients. The diagnosis age of the first and second primary malignant tumors is mainly concentrated among 55-75 years old, and the interval is inversely related to the diagnosis age of the first primary malignant tumor. The colorectal malignant tumors of SC and MC patients are distributed in all intestinal segments, and the pathological stages are mainly stage Ⅱ and Ⅲ, while the pathological types are mainly adenocarcinoma. Extraintestinal lesions are mostly located in the lungs and stomach.

Abstract:<h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Background/Purpose</h3><p>Due to the rarity of oral lymphoma (OL), we aimed to evaluate the clinical features of OL and discuss these findings in light of the literature.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Methods</h3><p>English language literature (1980–2019) related to OL was searched in two electronic databases. Patients (2000–2019) diagnosed with OL were also selected from the database of the Oral Pathology Department in our institution. The clinical features, radiographic appearance, and histopathological diagnosis in these selected cases from publications and our institution were then analyzed.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Results</h3><p>607 cases of OL (15 in our institution and 592 from literature) in patients aged between 0 and 92 years (average, 51.8 years) with a male to female ratio of 1.6:1 were included. The most common diagnosis was diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (<em>n</em> = 205), followed by Burkitt lymphoma (<em>n</em> = 72) and T-cell lymphoma (<em>n</em> = 37). The most frequent site was the gingiva, followed by palate, maxilla, mandible, tongue and buccal mucosa. The most frequent symptoms were swelling, ulceration, paresthesia, mobile tooth and pain. Radiographic findings included ill-defined osteolytic lesion, thickening of the periodontal ligament, loss of lamina dura and tooth displacement.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Conclusion</h3><p>Despite the rarity of extranodal lymphomas in oral cavity, their occurrence may be part of disseminated disease. Detailed history-taking, clinical and imaging examination and awareness of the patient's signs and symptoms are important for early diagnosis and an improved prognosis. The current data form a useful basis for clinical investigation and teaching regarding lymphoma occurring in the oral cavity.</p>

Abstract:Objective To provide reference for future clinical diagnosis and treatment of carcinoma of the floor of mouth by analyzing its clinical characteristics,treatment and prognosis.Methods 34 patients with carcinoma of the floor of mouth were investigated retrospectively.All patients were treated in our hospital between 1992 and 2002.Results A total of 34 cases(28 males,6 females,averaged 58 years,the ratio of male to female was 4.7∶1) were included in this study.The tumors were located in anterior(22 cases,64.7%)and posterior(12 cases,35.3%) floor of the mouth,respectively.The rate of lymph node metastasis was 41.2%.All patients were treated with surgery,chemo-therapy and surgery,radio-therapy and surgery and chemo-therapy and radio-therapy and surgery,respectively,and the 5-year-survival rates were 45.5%,60.0%,50.0% and 62.5%.Conclusion The carcinoma of the floor of mouth often happened in elderly people,especially in males.The lymph node metastases happened regularly.The combination therapy is better in the treatment of carcinoma of the floor of mouth.
Clinical Features of Multiple Primary Malignant Tumors: A Retrospective Clinical Analysis of 213 Chinese Patients at Two Centers.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:The definition of multiple primary malignant tumors (MPMT) is two or more cancers without any correlation occur in an individual.AIM:This study is to delineate clinical characteristics of patients with MPMT and explore the treatment strategies for these patients.METHODS:This retrospective study analyzed the information of MPMT patients collected from two databases from January 2017 to September 2020. R tool and SPSS were used for statistical analysis.RESULTS:The cohort consisted of a total of 213 patients (male:female ratio 1.17:1) with MPMT. Among them, 159 patients had metachronous multiple primary malignant tumors (mMPMT), and 54 had synchronous multiple primary malignant tumors (sMPMT). The age at the time of diagnosis for most of them was 61-70 years. For mMPMT, the most common primary cancers were of digestive, breast, and lung origins, while the secondary ones were of digestive, lung, and urinary origins. For sMPMT patients, the most occurrences were digestive cancers in different organs of the digestive system. The most common pathological type of both primary and secondary cancers was adenocarcinoma. In this study, 54.92% of MPMT patients experienced treatments in addition to the surgical treatment, including targeted therapy and anti-PD-1 immunotherapy. The median survival time was 234.97 months, and the 5-year survival rate was 79% of all patients. The classification of MPMT and the age when the first primary cancer was diagnosed were independent factors affecting the prognosis of MPMT.CONCLUSION:Clinical characteristics of patients with sMPMT and mMPMT were different. Patients with cancer need primary cancer surveillance and screening of other cancers.
Clinicopathological features of multiple primary colorectal carcinoma

Abstract:Objective To investigate the clinicopathological features of multiple primary colorectal carcinoma. Methods The clinical data of 30 patients with multiple primary colorectal carcinoma and 580 patients with single colorectal carcinoma who were admitted to the Peking University People's Hospital from January 2001 to March 2008 were retrospectively analyzed. There were 16 patients with multiple synchronous carcinoma and 14with multiple metachronous carcinoma. The survival of the patients was analyzed using Kaplan-Meier method and the survival rates were compared using Log-rank test. All data were analyzed using the chi-square test. Results The onset age of multiple metachronous primary carcinoma was younger than that of multiple synchronous carcinoma and single colorectal carcinoma, while the onset age of multiple metachronous secondary carcinoma was close to that of multiple synchronous carcinoma and single colorectal carcinoma. Most of the synchronous carcinoma located at the left colon; while most of the metachronous primary carcinoma located at the rectum and sigmoid colon, and most of the metachronous secondary carcinoma located at the ascending colon. Patients with multiple synchronous carcinoma or multiple metachronous primary carcinoma received radical resection. Of the 14 patients with multiple metachronous carcinoma, 9 received radical resection for secondary focus. Except for three patients with multiple synchronous carcinoma and two patients with multiple metachronous carcinoma, all patients received postoperative chemotherapy with FCF, FOLFOX or XELOX regimen. Of the 580 patients with single colorectal carcinoma, 512 received radical resection, 68 received palliative operation, and 519 received postoperative chemotherapy. The cumulative survival rate of patients with multiple metachronous primary carcinoma was significantly higher than that of single colorectal carcinoma (x2 = 17. 289, P ＜ 0. 05). There was no significant difference in the cumulative survival rate between patients with single colorectal carcinoma and those with multiple metachronous secondary carcinoma or multiple synchronous carcinoma (x2 = 1.731, 0. 800, P ＞ 0. 05). Conclusion The prognosis of patients with colorectal multiple metachronous carcinoma is better than those with single colorectal carcinoma, and the prognosis of colorectal synchronous carcinoma is similar to those with single colorectal carcinoma.
[Clinical analysis of 71 cases of multiple primary cancers in head and neck squamous carcinomas]

Abstract:Objective: To study the location, treatment, life status of multiple primary cancers (MPCs) in head and neck squamous cell carcinomas. Methods: The clinical data of 71 head and neck squamous carcinoma patients with MPCs were retrospectively analyzed. Results: MPCs were seen in head and neck regions in 27 cases and in remote organs in 42 cases, two of which were triplicate primary cancers. Four cases were synchronous MPCs, including one patient with synchronous triplicate primary cancer. Other 67 cases were heterochronous MPCs, including one patient with heterochronous triplicate primary cancer. Of 67 heterochronous MPCs, the time interval between index tumor presentation and diagnosis of MPCs was eight months to twelve years. MPCs occurred in seventy percent index oral cavity squamous cancers, which were located in head and neck regions, and in sixty-two percent index hypopharynx cancers and seventy-nine percent index laryngeal cancers, which were located in remote organs. The incidence of MPCs in esophagus and lung was higher than that in other remote organs. Among the various MPCs in this serials, the incidence of the disease appeared to be the highest in esophagus, accounting for twenty-four percent of all cases. The total three- and five-year survival rates were 32.4% and 22.5%, respectively. Of all MPCs patients, the three-year survival rate for patients who received different therapies for their MPCs was obviously higher than that of untreated patients (P < 0.01, Chi-square test). Conclusions: Esophageal carcinoma is the most common second primary cancer among the various MPCs of the head and neck squamous carcinomas. Oral cavity cancers tend to have more MPCs in the head and neck regions, and laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancers are easily to be associated with MPCs in the remote organs. Regular follow-up and early diagnosis with effective treatment can help to improve the survival of MPC patients in head and neck squamous cell carcinomas.
Clinicopathological Characteristics and Treatment of Multiple Primary Colorectal Carcinoma

Abstract:Objective To investigate clinicopathological characteristics,diagnosis and treatment of multiple primary colorectal carcinoma (MPCC). Methods From January 2008 to March 2017,42 patients diagnosed with MPCC underwent surgery at Beijing Shijitan Hospital,Capital Medical University. Their clinicopathological features,diagnosis and treatment were analyzed. Results These 42 MPCC patients accounted for 7. 1％ (42/ 592)colorectal cancer patients in the same period. There were 64 intestinal cancer lesions in 32 patients (76. 2％)with synchronous carcinoma (SC),and 20 intestinal cancer lesions in 10 patients (23. 8％)with metachronous carcinoma(MC),where the interval between the first and the recurrent was 18-105 months. The proportion of patients in the SC group with highly to moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma was significantly higher compared with that of the MC group (P<0. 05),while the incidence of mucinous carcinoma was lower than that of the MC group(P<0. 05). No significant differences were found with regard to tumor size,location,complications with adenoma,TNM stages,lymph nodes metastases or DNA mismatch repair between the SC group and the MC group(all P>0. 05). Among 42 patients undergoing radical operation,6 received colonic metallic stent implantation as a bridge to elective resection in 10 patients with colonic obstruction. Conclusion MPCC,mainly two-lesion cancer,is most commonly found in sigmoid colon and rectum. Those with poorly differentiated cancer, mucinous carcinoma and those complicated with adenoma should be closely followed up with colonoscopy. Colonic metallic stent implantation as a bridge to elective resection may improve the detection rate of SC.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:The purpose of the present study was to investigate the clinicopathological characteristics and prognostic factors of second primary oral squamous cell carcinoma after radiotherapy for head and neck cancer.METHODS:The clinicopathological characteristics of 48 second primary oral squamous cell carcinoma patients with a history of radiotherapy for head and neck cancer were retrospectively analyzed by Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and Cox proportional hazards model, including gender, age, alcohol consumption, smoking, clinical stage, margin status, regional lymph node status, tumor differentiation and treatment mode.RESULTS:The second primary oral squamous cell carcinoma mostly occurred on the tongue [18/48], buccal [12/48] and gingiva [10/48], and the 3- and 5-year overall survival (OS) was 60.3% and 39.4%, respectively. Margin status and extranodal extension were significantly associated with OS, while only margin status was found to be an independent prognostic factor of OS in the Cox proportional hazards model (P=0.003, HR =3.976, 95% CI: 1.596-9.904).CONCLUSIONS:Oral squamous cell carcinoma patients underwent radiotherapy for head and neck cancer show poor survival outcomes. Margin status is an independent prognostic factor of second primary oral squamous cell carcinoma.
Comprehensive analysis of clinicopathological characteristics in oral squamous cell carcinoma arising from oral submucous fibrosis: a retrospective study

Abstract:Background: Oral squamous cell carcinoma arising from oral submucous fibrosis is recognized as a clinicopathologically distinct disease. This study aims to summarize and compare the population and clinicopathologic characteristics of OSCC-OSF with other OSCC in Hunan Province, China. The objective is to formulate treatment strategies more in line with regional characteristics. Methods: A retrospective review of OSCC cases recruited from the Second Xiangya Hospital from 2010 to 2020 was conducted. A total of 1,413 OSCC patients were selected, including 481 patients with OSCC-OSF and 932 were other OSCC. Population characteristics, risk factors and clinicopathological manifestations were explored in OSCC-OSF and other OSCC, as well as thinprep cytologic test and DNA quantification. Results: We found that OSCC-OSF patients were younger than those with other OSCC. Both types of disease were predominantly observed in males compared to females. Tumor biopsy analysis indicated that tumor cells within OSCC-OSF patients were more likely to be well differentiated and showed a higher frequency of lymph node metastases. Clinicopathological factors, such as the chewing betel nuts habit and smoking, were more prevalent in OSCC-OSF patients in contrast to other OSCC. DNA quantification revealed that the number of DNA aneuploid cells was higher in OSCC-OSF compared to other OSCCs. Conclusion: In this study, OSCC-OSF is considered a clinicopathologically distinct disease. Compared with other OSCC, OSCC-OSF patients have a higher incidence of nodal metastases, an early clinical TNM stage, and a lower three-year survival rate. Therefore, early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to improving the prognosis of OSCC-OSF.

Abstract:Objective:To study the epidemic and the clinical characteristics of the multiple primary cancers(MPCs)in head and neck.Methods:The clinical data of 28 head and neck cancer patients with MPCs were retrospectively analyzed.The data included the sex,smoke history,index tumor,treatment,the time interval between index tumor and the MPCs and the prognosis of the patients.The data were analyzed by the SAS System.Results:In the 28 cases,the male patients were more than the female patients.The average age was 56 years old.Except for two cases of simultaneous MPCs,the time interval between index tumor presentation and diagnosis of the second tumor was 0.5 to 20 years.There was 12 cases that both the index tumor and the second primary tumor occurred in the aerodigestive system.There were 6 patients with nasopharynx cancers who were treated by radiotherapy developed second primary cancers after several years in the radial field.There was no significant difference in the three-year survival rate of the patient with MPCs between the tumors occurred in aerodigestive system and the tumors occurred in other systems.Conclusion:The aerodigestive system was the most common system where the MPCs occurred.Radiotherapy treatment may be related to the development of the second primary cancer.And the radiotherapy may restrain the metastasis of the lymph nodes in the neck.How to treat the patients with MPCs lie on the complexion of the patients,the location and the property of the tumor,etc.The second primary cancer often developed in several years after the index cancer occurred.A long-term follow-up is necessary.

Abstract:Objective To approach the clinical and pathologic features,diagnosis and differential diagnosis of extramed-ullary myeloid sarcoma in order to know more about it.Methods The clinical manifestations,histomorphology featru-res,immunohistochemistry,treatment and prognosis were analyzed in three cases of extramedullary myeloid sarcoma of the mouth mucosa with review of the literatures.Results Three cases of extramedullary myeloid sarcoma of the mouth mucosa all presented gingival enlargement.Morphologically,the tumor cells grew in a diffuse pattern and were small to medium in size,with scant cytoplasm,round or oval nuclear,exquisite chromatin,and frequent karyokinesis.Immunohis-tochemistry for MPO were all positive in three cases,and CD43 and CD117 were positive in two cases.Conclusions Extramedullary myeloid sarcoma is rare.Only with morphology,it may be misdiagnosed as lymphoma,small cell carcino-ma and so on.Immunohistochemistry can contribute to diagnosis and differential diagnosis so as to guide the doctors to give patients appropriate treatment.
[Clinical Analysis of 168 Cases of Multiple Primary Colorectal Carcinoma].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To study the incidence rate of multiple primary colorectal carcinomas (MPCC) in colorectal carcinoma and to evaluate its clinical and pathological characteristics.METHODS:One hundred and sixty-eight (4.6%) patients from 3663 cases with colorectal carcinoma were diagnosed with MPCC from January 1985 to December 2003. The clinical data of the patients were collected retrospectively to investigate the diagnosis and treatment of MPCC.RESULTS:Of the 168 patients, 81 were diagnosed as synchronous colorectal carcinoma (SC), 72 with metachronous colorectal carcinoma (MC), 15 with both SC and MC. The median age at time of diagnosis of colorectal carcinoma was 58 years old (range from 20 to 82 years old). Three hundred and ninety-three cancer lesions were detected in these 168 cases (mean, 2.3 lesions/case). The rectum and sigmoid colon were the most involved sites (61.6%). Eighteen cases (10.7%) were verified with hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) while another 9 cases were highly suspected. Fourteen patients (8.3%) were found with other malignancies out of large intestine, 41 patients (24.4%) with colorectal adenomas, 72 (42.9%) with adenoma carcinogenesis. Among the 96 SC patients, 91 were given preoperative colonoscopy and 65 (71.4%) got the diagnosis. All the MC patients were diagnosed by postoperative colonoscopy. The overall 5-year survival rate of the 168 patients was 69.8%.CONCLUSIONS:MPCC should be paid more attention in colorectal cancer management. Colonoscopic surveillance is much more important in diagnosis and follow-up of MPCC for reducing the misdiagnosis of SC and detecting more MC in time. Prompt treatment of adenoma can reduce the occurrence of MPCC, and active and standard surgical treatment should be done for MPCC.

Abstract:Background: Multiple primary malignant tumors (MPMTs) are defined as two or more histologically distinct malignancies in one individual, standard treatments for MPMTs are not well established, we aimed to clinical analyze the factors influence the treatment efficacy of MPMTs. Methods: This study retrospectively analyzed 15,321 malignant tumor patients at the Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital, College of Medicine, Zhejiang University, China, between March 2006 and June 2016. The survival analysis was performed with SPSS version 22.0 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA) with Kaplan-Meier methodology. Results: The prevalence of MPMTs in our study was 1.09% (167/15321), with a male to female ratio of 2.34:1. Specifically, 98 patients harbored synchronous MPMTs, and 69 patients harbored metachronous MPMTs. The most common cancer pairs were digestive-digestive tumor (43 patients, 25.75%), digestive-lung cancer (32 patients, 19.16%), and head & neck-digestive tumor (11 patients, 6.59%). Among patients with synchronous and metachronous first primary cancers, 65.86% received surgery. 33.33% (27/81) of the patients with synchronous MPMTs received simultaneous resection. Of the 69 patients with metachronous MPMTs, 31.88% (22/69) were treated with surgery alone, 62.32% (43/69) received chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy for the first primary tumor, and 44.93% (31/69) received surgery for the other primary tumor. 98.20% (164/167) of patients with MPMTs were effectively followed up, the overall 2- and 5-year survival rates were 54.3% and 31.4%, respectively, with a median survival time of 28.0 months. Conclusions: The early diagnosis of rare MPMTs should not be neglected in patients not only when treated for a primary malignancy but also during long-term follow-up. Effective treatment for MPMTs may yield promising curative effect and warrants further investigation.
