Abstract:Studying the intrinsic mechanisms of coupled information and epidemic transmission can enhance public understanding of the dynamic processes involved in epidemic transmission. Heterogeneous individual activity levels reshape propagation mechanisms, influencing the co-evolutionary dynamics of information and epidemics. We developed a novel coupled information-epidemic model to investigate how variations in individual activity levels affect the dynamic propagation process. This model differs from previous ones by incorporating individual activity heterogeneity, which reshapes linking mechanisms between nodes, affecting the mechanisms of information diffusion, epidemic transmission, and inter-layer social reinforcement. Using a micro-Markov chain approach (MMCA), we deduced the outbreak threshold. Our study revealed the following key findings: (i) individual activity levels in the epidemic transmission layer have a more significant effect on epidemic transmission; (ii) inter-layer social reinforcement can inhibit epidemic transmission; (iii) the stronger the local information influence—indicated by a higher proportion of individuals aware of surrounding information—accelerates information diffusion, thereby inhibiting epidemic transmission; and (iv) enhancing the influence of information on epidemics can further inhibit epidemic transmission. The complexity of these coupled interactions emphasizes the importance of individual behaviors in the dynamics of the entire social system, providing a theoretical foundation for developing effective prevention strategies.
