Abstract:Over the past decade, the coupled spread of information and epidemic on multiplex networks has become an active and interesting topic. Recently, it has been shown that stationary and pairwise interactions have limitations in describing inter-individual interactions , and thus, the introduction of higher-order representation is significant. To this end, we present a new two-layer activity-driven network epidemic model, which considers the partial mapping relationship among nodes across two layers and simultaneously introduces simplicial complexes into one layer, to investigate the effect of 2-simplex and inter-layer mapping rate on epidemic transmission. In this model, the top network, called the virtual information layer, characterizes information dissemination in online social networks, where information can be diffused through simplicial complexes and/or pairwise interactions. The bottom network, named as the physical contact layer, denotes the spread of infectious diseases in real-world social networks. It is noteworthy that the correspondence among nodes between two networks is not one-to-one but partial mapping. Then, a theoretical analysis using the microscopic Markov chain (MMC) method is performed to obtain the outbreak threshold of epidemics, and extensive Monte Carlo (MC) simulations are also carried out to validate the theoretical predictions. It is obviously shown that MMC method can be used to estimate the epidemic threshold; meanwhile, the inclusion of simplicial complexes in the virtual layer or introductory partial mapping relationship between layers can inhibit the spread of epidemics. Current results are conducive to understanding the coupling behaviors between epidemics and disease-related information.

Abstract:Numerous efforts have been devoted to investigating the network activities and dynamics of isolated networks. Nevertheless, in practice, most complex networks might be interconnected with each other (due to the existence of common components) and exhibit layered properties while the connections on different layers represent various relationships. These types of networks are characterized as multiplex networks. A two-layered multiplex network model (usually composed of a virtual layer sustaining unaware-aware-unaware (UAU) dynamics and a physical one supporting susceptible-infected-recovered-dead (SIRD) process) is presented to investigate the spreading property of fatal epidemics in this manuscript. Due to the incorporation of the virtual layer, the recovered and dead individuals seem to play different roles in affecting the epidemic spreading process. In details, the corresponding nodes on the virtual layer for the recovered individuals are capable of transmitting information to other individuals, while the corresponding nodes for the dead individuals (which are to be eliminated) on the virtual layer should be removed as well. With the coupled UAU-SIRD model, the relationships between the focused variables and parameters of the epidemic are studied thoroughly. As indicated by the results, the range of affected individuals will be reduced by a large amount with the incorporation of virtual layers. Furthermore, the effects of recovery time on the epidemic spreading process are also investigated aiming to consider various physical conditions. Theoretical analyses are also derived for scenarios with and without required time periods for recovery which validates the reducing effects of incorporating virtual layers on the epidemic spreading process.

Abstract:Information diffusion among individuals occurs in various ways, mainly involving pairwise and higher-order interactions, and their coexistence can be characterized by simplicial complexes. This paper introduces a novel two-layer model that investigates coupled information-epidemic propagation. Specifically, the upper layer represents the virtual layer that depicts information diffusion, where the interaction process among individuals is not only limited to pairwise interactions but also influenced by higher-order interactions. The lower layer denotes the physical contact layer to portray epidemic transmission, where the interaction process among individuals is only considered in pairwise interactions. In particular, the emergence of asymmetric activity levels in two-layer networks reshapes the propagation mechanism. We then employ the micro-Marko chain approach (MMCA) to establish the probabilistic transfer equation for each state, deduce the epidemic outbreak threshold, and investigate the equilibrium and stability of the proposed model. Furthermore, we perform extensive Monte Carlo (MC) simulations to validate the theoretical predictions. The results demonstrate that the higher-order interaction generates synergistic reinforcement mechanisms that both facilitate information diffusion and inhibit epidemic transmission. Moreover, this study suggests that the activity level of individuals at the physical contact level has a greater impact on epidemic transmission. In addition, we utilize two different networks to explore the influence of network structural features on the transmission and scale of epidemics.

Abstract:Simplicial complexes describe the simple fact that in social networks a link can connect more than two individuals. As we show here, this has far-reaching consequences for epidemic spreading, in particular in the context of a multilayer network model, where one layer is a virtual social network and the other one is a physical contact network. The social network layer is responsible for the transmission of information via pairwise or higher order 2-simplex interactions among individuals, while the physical layer is responsible for the epidemic spreading. We use the microscopic Markov chain approach to derive the probability transition equations and to determine epidemic outbreak thresholds. We further support these results with Monte Carlo simulations, which are in good agreement, thus confirming the analytical tractability of the proposed model. We find that information transmission rates are frequently low when actual disease transmission rates in the physical network are low or medium, and we show that this can be mitigated effectively by introducing 2-simplex interactions in the social network. The relative ease of introducing higher-order interactions in virtual social networks means that this could be exploited to inhibit epidemic outbreaks.

Abstract:Epidemic tends to break out with information spreading which occurs between pairwise individuals or in groups. In active social online platform, three or more individuals can share information or exchange opinion, which could be modeled as a clique beyond pairwise interaction. This work studies the influence of information with higher-order cliques whose closure probability is described by higher-order clustering coefficient on epidemic spreading. The coupled spreading process of disease and awareness follows an unaware-aware-unaware-susceptible-infected-susceptible model on multiplex networks. We deduce the epidemic threshold of multiplex network with higher-order cliques, and explore the effects of cliques on epidemic spreading process at slow, middle and fast pairwise information spreading rates. The results show that the epidemic threshold and higher-order clustering coefficient are positively correlated. Moreover, we find that the effect of higher-order cliques could be ignored when pairwise information spreading rate is large enough. Finally, we show that the steady infection ratio decreases with the increase of the higher-order clustering coefficient.
Suppressing disease spreading by using information diffusion on multiplex networks

Abstract:Although there is always an interplay between the dynamics of information diffusion and disease spreading, the empirical research on the systemic coevolution mechanisms connecting these two spreading dynamics is still lacking. Here we investigate the coevolution mechanisms and dynamics between information and disease spreading by utilizing real data and a proposed spreading model on multiplex network. Our empirical analysis finds asymmetrical interactions between the information and disease spreading dynamics. Our results obtained from both the theoretical framework and extensive stochastic numerical simulations suggest that an information outbreak can be triggered in a communication network by its own spreading dynamics or by a disease outbreak on a contact network, but that the disease threshold is not affected by information spreading. Our key finding is that there is an optimal information transmission rate that markedly suppresses the disease spreading. We find that the time evolution of the dynamics in the proposed model qualitatively agrees with the real-world spreading processes at the optimal information transmission rate.

Abstract:There has been growing interest in exploring the interplay between epidemic spreading with human response, since it is natural for people to take various measures when they become aware of epidemics. As a proper way to describe the multiple connections among people in reality, multiplex network, a set of nodes interacting through multiple sets of edges, has attracted much attention. In this paper, to explore the coupled dynamical processes, a multiplex network with two layers is built. Specifically, the information spreading layer is a time varying network generated by the activity driven model, while the contagion layer is a static network. We extend the microscopic Markov chain approach to derive the epidemic threshold of the model. Compared with extensive Monte Carlo simulations, the method shows high accuracy for the prediction of the epidemic threshold. Besides, taking different spreading models of awareness into consideration, we explored the interplay between epidemic spreading with awareness spreading. The results show that the awareness spreading can not only enhance the epidemic threshold but also reduce the prevalence of epidemics. When the spreading of awareness is defined as susceptible-infected-susceptible model, there exists a critical value where the dynamical process on the awareness layer can control the onset of epidemics; while if it is a threshold model, the epidemic threshold emerges an abrupt transition with the local awareness ratio α approximating 0.5. Moreover, we also find that temporal changes in the topology hinder the spread of awareness which directly affect the epidemic threshold, especially when the awareness layer is threshold model. Given that the threshold model is a widely used model for social contagion, this is an important and meaningful result. Our results could also lead to interesting future research about the different time-scales of structural changes in multiplex networks.
Impact of community structure on the spread of epidemics on time-varying multiplex networks

Abstract:Community structure plays a crucial role in realistic networks and different communities can be created by groups of interest and activity events, and exploring the impact of community properties on collective dynamics is an active topic in the field of network science. Here, we propose a new coupled model with different time scales for online social networks and offline epidemic spreading networks, in which community structure is added into online social networks to investigate its role in the interacting dynamics between information diffusion and epidemic spreading. We obtain the analytical equations of epidemic threshold by MMC (Microscopic Markov Chain) method and conduct a large quantities of numerical simulations using Monte Carlo simulations in order to verify the accuracy of the MMC method, and more valuable insights are also obtained. The results indicate that an increase in the probability of the mobility of an individual can delay the spread of epidemic-related information in the network, as well as delaying the time of the peak of the infection density in the network. However, an increase in the contact ability of mobile individuals produces a facilitating effect on the spread of epidemics. Finally, it is also found that the stronger the acceptance of an individual to information coming from a different community, the lower the infection density in the network, which suggests that it has an inhibitory effect on the disease spreading.

Identifying super-spreaders in information-epidemic coevolving dynamics on multiplex networks

Abstract:Identifying super-spreaders in epidemics is important to suppress the spreading of disease especially when the medical resource is <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://limited.In" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> the modern society, the information on epidemics transmits swiftly through various communication channels which contributes much to the suppression of epidemics. Here we study on the identification of super-spreaders in the information-disease coupled spreading dynamics. Firstly, we find that the centralities in physical contact layer are no longer effective to identify super-spreaders in epidemics, which is due to the suppression effects from the information spreading. Then by considering the structural and dynamical couplings between the communication layer and physical contact layer, we propose a centrality measure called coupling-sensitive centrality to identify super-spreaders in disease spreading. Simulation results on synthesized and real-world multiplex networks show that the proposed measure is not only much more accurate than centralities on the single network, but also outperforms two typical multilayer centralities in identifying super-spreaders. These findings imply that considering the structural and dynamical couplings between layers is very necessary in identifying the key roles in the coupled multilayer systems.

Abstract:Recently, the interplay between epidemic spreading and awareness diffusion has aroused the interest of many researchers, who have studied models mainly based on linear coupling relations between information and epidemic layers. However, in real-world networks the relation between two layers may be closely correlated with the property of individual nodes and exhibits nonlinear dynamical features. Here we propose a nonlinear coupled information-epidemic model (I-E model) and present a comprehensive analysis in a more generalized scenario where the upload rate differs from node to node, deletion rate varies between susceptible and infected states, and infection rate changes between unaware and aware states. In particular, we develop a theoretical framework of the intra- and inter-layer dynamical processes with a microscopic Markov chain approach (MMCA), and derive an analytic epidemic threshold. Our results suggest that the change of upload and deletion rate has little effect on the diffusion dynamics in the epidemic layer.

Abstract:In recent years, modeling the coupled spread of awareness and epidemic has become an active topic in the field of network science. Many researches have pointed out that individual heterogeneity is often a significant factor influencing the epidemic transmission, due to variations in the responses of different individuals confronting epidemics. In addition, in social networks there are not only simple friendly interactions, but also hostile relationships that contain negative feelings. Therefore, we construct a two-layered network model of information diffusion and epidemics spreading on signed networks. The top layer denotes the diffusion of awareness, which is constructed as a signed network and is based on structural balance theory, here we assume that the information acceptance rate varies between individuals as a result of positive and negative relationships. The bottom layer characterizes the epidemic transmission layer, which defines that the individual precaution intensity will differ according to local and global disease proportion. We utilize the Microscopic Markov Chain approach to theoretically analyze the model and solve the epidemic threshold, which is in good accordance with the Monte Carlo simulations. Our findings indicate that increasing the proportion of positive edges could promote the diffusion of awareness, thereby inhibiting epidemics spread and raising outbreak thresholds. As the impact of local and global disease proportion on individual response strength increases, it reduces the proportion of eventual infectives of epidemics but does not have any effect on thresholds. The results of our study can provide some theoretical support for the public health authorities to develop effective prevention and control strategies.

Abstract:Awareness of epidemics can influence people’s behavior and further trigger changes in epidemic spreading. Previous studies concentrating on the coupled awareness-epidemic dynamics usually ignore the multi-type information and the heterogeneity of individuals. However, the real-world cases can be more complicated, and the interaction between information diffusion and epidemic spreading needs further study. In this article, we propose an individual-based epidemics and multi-type information spreading (IEMIS) model on two-layered multiplex networks considering positive and negative preventive information and two types of heterogeneity: 1) heterogeneity of aware individual’s state which leads to differences in aware transmission capacity and 2) heterogeneity of individual’s node degree which affects the epidemic infection rate. Based on Micro-Markov Chain approach (MMCA), we derive the theoretical epidemic threshold for the proposed model and validate the results by those obtained with Monto Carlo (MC) simulations. Through extensive simulations, we demonstrate that for epidemics with low infectivity, promoting the diffusion of positive preventive information, enhancing the importance ratio of neighbors who are aware of positive information, and increasing social distance among individuals can effectively suppress epidemic spreading. However, for highly infectious diseases, the influence of these factors becomes limited.
Coupled Epidemic-Information Propagation with Stranding Mechanism on Multiplex Metapopulation Networks

Abstract:Acknowledging the significance of information propagation and individual adaptive behavior has been regarded as an indispensable prerequisite for a complete understanding of epidemic spreading. Recent studies have widely considered the metapopulation model, where epidemics spread over a single layer of physical networks via individual mobility. However, these advances neglected the interventions of accompanied information and individual behavior response related to epidemics. In this article, we develop a coupled epidemic-information propagation model on multiplex metapopulation networks leveraging the microscopic Markov chain (MMC) approach, aiming to explore the spatiotemporal characteristics of epidemic spreading process. Taking the individual adaptive behavior into account, the stranding mechanism based on infection level and medical resources is introduced to capture the population size dynamics during individual mobility among different patches. Theoretical epidemic threshold is analytically derived under the improved framework. Extensive numerical simulations are performed to validate our theoretical analysis and further examine the impacts of information propagation and spreading parameters on epidemic threshold and steady-state prevalence. Our results indicate that both the scale of information diffusion and the specific configuration of spreading parameters can significantly suppress the epidemic prevalence. These findings shed a novel light on theoretical research and decision-making of coupled epidemic-information process in the spatiotemporal perspective.
The impact of nodes of information dissemination on epidemic spreading in dynamic multiplex networks

Abstract:Epidemic spreading processes on dynamic multiplex networks provide a more accurate description of natural spreading processes than those on single layered networks. To describe the influence of different individuals in the awareness layer on epidemic spreading, we propose a two-layer network-based epidemic spreading model, including some individuals who neglect the epidemic, and we explore how individuals with different properties in the awareness layer will affect the spread of epidemics. The two-layer network model is divided into an information transmission layer and a disease spreading layer. Each node in the layer represents an individual with different connections in different layers. Individuals with awareness will be infected with a lower probability compared to unaware individuals, which corresponds to the various epidemic prevention measures in real life. We adopt the micro-Markov chain approach to analytically derive the threshold for the proposed epidemic model, which demonstrates that the awareness layer affects the threshold of disease spreading. We then explore how individuals with different properties would affect the disease spreading process through extensive Monte Carlo numerical simulations. We find that individuals with high centrality in the awareness layer would significantly inhibit the transmission of infectious diseases. Additionally, we propose conjectures and explanations for the approximately linear effect of individuals with low centrality in the awareness layer on the number of infected individuals.

Abstract:During an epidemic outbreak, apart from individual behavior and internal factors, certain external elements typically exert a significant influence on the propagation process. This paper introduces an innovative two-layer model, denoted "unaware–aware–unaware–susceptible–infected–susceptible" (UAU-SIS) model, encompassing two dynamic processes in time-varying multiplex networks. The model considers the effects of asymmetric individual activity levels and distinct network topologies on the dynamic propagation process. Importantly, we also explore how global and local environmental stresses impact individual behavior changes. To quantify the influence of individual behavior changes on dynamic propagation, we employ the Heaviside step function. We also employ a power-law distribution to describe varying individual activity levels for each layer to characterize the influence of asymmetric individual activity levels on epidemic transmission. Using the microscopic Markov chain approach (MMCA), we establish the probabilistic transfer equation for each state and derive the epidemic outbreak threshold. Comprehensive Monte Carlo (MC) simulations were performed to validate our theoretical findings, with the results demonstrating that reducing community mobility and decreasing the threshold for behavior change can effectively delay outbreaks and limit the scale of an epidemic. The sensitivity of local environmental stresses is more capable of influencing individual behavioral decision-making. Furthermore, activity levels in the physical contact network exert a greater impact on epidemic transmission compared to those in the information diffusion layer. Notably, varying individual thresholds for behavior change result in a two-phase effect on both the epidemic outbreak threshold and its ultimate scale. Hence, this study provides actionable insights for policymakers responsible for shaping vaccination strategies and managing epidemic transmission.

Mutual Feedback Between Epidemic Spreading and Information Diffusion

Abstract:The impact that information diffusion has on epidemic spreading has recently attracted much attention. As a disease begins to spread in the population, information about the disease is transmitted to others, which in turn has an effect on the spread of disease. In this paper, using empirical results of the propagation of H7N9 and information about the disease, we clearly show that the spreading dynamics of the two-types of processes influence each other. We build a mathematical model in which both types of spreading dynamics are described using the SIS process in order to illustrate the influence of information diffusion on epidemic spreading. Both the simulation results and the pairwise analysis reveal that information diffusion can increase the threshold of an epidemic outbreak, decrease the final fraction of infected individuals and significantly decrease the rate at which the epidemic propagates. Additionally, we find that the multi-outbreak phenomena of epidemic spreading, along with the impact of information diffusion, is consistent with the empirical results. These findings highlight the requirement to maintain social awareness of diseases even when the epidemics seem to be under control in order to prevent a subsequent outbreak. These results may shed light on the in-depth understanding of the interplay between the dynamics of epidemic spreading and information diffusion.
Impact of awareness dissemination on epidemic reaction–diffusion in multiplex networks

Abstract:Despite intensive studies on epidemic spreading in multiplex networks, the physical contact network is normally represented by individual contacts without considering human mobility. In this paper, a coupled epidemic-awareness-mobility model is constructed on multiplex networks, where the upper layer describes awareness dissemination via information links, while the lower layer describes epidemic spreading with recurrent mobility based on meta-population. In the information dissemination process, the role of taciturn individuals is considered. By microscopic Markov chain approach, the threshold of epidemic is derived analytically. Through extensive simulations, it is shown that the dissemination of information can significantly affect the epidemic threshold and the final recovery density. Moreover, because the hub nodes will be more likely in taciturn state, the structure of information layer can affect the stationary fraction of recovered individuals and the epidemic threshold. Finally, a hub-patch favored migration pattern will increase the final scale of epidemic spreading. Increasing the information transmission rate and decreasing the mobility rate are the optimal strategies to suppress epidemic spreading. The results can sharpen our understanding of the role of awareness dissemination and human mobility in epidemic containment.

Abstract:Social contact networks and the way people interact with each other are the key factors that impact on epidemics spreading. However, it is challenging to model the behavior of epidemics based on social contact networks due to their high dynamics. Traditional models such as susceptible-infected-recovered (SIR) model ignore the crowding or protection effect and thus has some unrealistic assumption. In this paper, we consider the crowding or protection effect and develop a novel model called improved SIR model. Then, we use both deterministic and stochastic models to characterize the dynamics of epidemics on social contact networks. The results from both simulations and real data set conclude that the epidemics are more likely to outbreak on social contact networks with higher average degree. Community Size Effects on Epidemic Spreading in Multiplex Social Networks

Abstract:The dynamical process of epidemic spreading has drawn much attention of the complex network community. In the network paradigm, diseases spread from one person to another through the social ties amongst the population. There are a variety of factors that govern the processes of disease spreading on the networks. A common but not negligible factor is people’s reaction to the outbreak of epidemics. Such reaction can be related information dissemination or self-protection. In this work, we explore the interactions between disease spreading and population response in terms of information diffusion and individuals’ alertness. We model the system by mapping multiplex networks into two-layer networks and incorporating individuals’ risk awareness, on the assumption that their response to the disease spreading depends on the size of the community they belong to. By comparing the final incidence of diseases in multiplex networks, we find that there is considerable mitigation of diseases spreading for full phase of spreading speed when individuals’ protection responses are introduced. Interestingly, the degree of community overlap between the two layers is found to be critical factor that affects the final incidence. We also analyze the consequences of the epidemic incidence in communities with different sizes and the impacts of community overlap between two layers. Specifically, as the diseases information makes individuals alert and take measures to prevent the diseases, the effective protection is more striking in small community. These phenomena can be explained by the multiplexity of the networked system and the competition between two spreading processes.
