Abstract:Abstract Background Assessment of a childu0027s growth is important for detecting aberrations, whether too much or too little or growth. Poor growth in early life may have long-lasting programming effects on later non-communicable diseases. We examined the growth patterns of healthy Chinese infants from birth to 24 months to provide a baseline from which to detect cases of too much or too little growth. Methods This study was based on six birth cohorts from across China in 2015, which provided data on 4251 infants (2174 boys, 2077 girls) who were born at term to mothers without gestational or preexisting diabetes, chronic hypertension, preeclampsia, or eclampsia. Analyses were performed using 28 298 longitudinal anthropometric measurements in 4251 infants and the LMS method, and smoothed Z-score growth curves were generated. These standards based on Chinese children were compared to WHO growth standards (which are based on data from 2003) and current Chinese growth references (which are based on data from 2005). The six birth cohorts were located in Shanghai (2 cohorts), Anhui, Guangdong, Hubei, and Jiangsu Provinces. Pregnant women were recruited at hospitals when they came for their routine prenatal care visits. Each cohort contributed longitudinal child growth data of 1000 single infants from birth to 24 months, or the maximum number available at the time of our data request in July, 2016 (261–1065). Infant anthropometric measurements were taken seven times (at 42 days, 3, 6, 8 [or 9], 12, 18 and 24 months). This project was approved by the institutional review board of Xinhua Hospital, affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine (approval number XHEC-C-2017-060). Findings Compared to the WHO longitudinal growth standards for children aged 0 to 2 years, the growth standards from this longitudinal study (length, weight, head circumference, BMI-for-age, and weight-for-length) were significantly higher, for both boys and girls. For example, in comparison with the corresponding WHO growth standard, the median length-for-age was on average 0·9 cm (range 0·2–1·3 cm) higher in Chinese boys and 1·3 cm (range 0·5–1·9 cm) higher in Chinese girls. growth references from this study were also higher than the current China cross-sectional growth references (based on data from a decade ago), but the difference was less than that between growth standards of this study and WHO growth standards. Compared to the China growth reference (data from 2005), the median length-for-age in our study (data from 2015) was on average 0·3 cm higher in boys, and 0·5 cm higher in girls across. Interpretation Growth curves of healthy Chinese infants evaluated longitudinally from 0 to 24 months of age provide standards for monitoring growth in early life in China that are more recent than WHO longitudinal growth standards and the current cross-sectional growth references for China. Abstract:Objective To explore the rules of growth and development in children born small for gestational age(SGA,10th percentile birth weight for gestation) or large for gestational age(LGA,≥90th percentile) with those appropriate for gestational age.Methods Screening was performed to 38 898 newborns in Hangzhou of Zhejiang province in 2000,2004,2005 years and 794 newborns were followed up in survey,who took partial physical examination and were assessed with WHO standard.Measurements of body mass index(BMI) scores and Z scores for weight and length were based on normalized distributions.Results Prevalence rates were as follows:SGA infants,1.5%,2.0%,2.3%respectively and LGA infants 4.7%,5.2%,4.2%respectively.Development of weight,height and BMI in LGA group were the best among the 3 groups,while the SGA group showed the lowest level of development in the 12-18 and 24-30 months after birth.LGA group remain heavier,while SGA group showed postnatal catch-up height and BMI by 72-78 months compared with those appropriate for gestational age(AGA),LGA group.Conclusions There is a consanguineous relationship between the growth in uterus and the growth in the early childhood.Monitoring and intervention shall be given to those infants with different birth weights and as early as possible with rational nutrition.

Abstract:CONTEXT:Age of pubertal onset has been decreasing in many countries but there have been no data on pubertal development in Chinese children over the last decade.OBJECTIVE:The primary objective of the study was to evaluate the current status of sexual maturation in Chinese children and adolescents. Secondary objectives were to examine socioeconomic, lifestyle, and auxological associations with pubertal onset.METHODS:In this national, cross-sectional, community-based health survey, a multistage, stratified cluster random sampling method was used to select a nationally representative sample, consisting of 231 575 children and adolescents (123 232 boys and 108 343 girls) between 2017 and 2019. Growth parameters and pubertal staging were assessed by physical examination.RESULTS:Compared to 10 years previously, the median age of Tanner 2 breast development and menarche were similar at 9.65 years and 12.39 years respectively. However, male puberty occurred earlier with a median age of testicular volume ≥4 mL of 10.65 years. Pubertal onset did occur earlier at the extremes, with 3.3% of the girls with breast development at 6.5-6.99 years old, increasing to 5.8% by 7.5-7.99 years old. Early pubertal onset was also noted in boys, with a testicular volume ≥ 4 mL noted in 1.5% at 7.5-7.99 years, increasing to 3.5% at 8.5-8.99 years old. Obesity and overweight increased risk of developing earlier puberty relative to normal weight in both boys and girls.CONCLUSION:Over the past decade, pubertal development is occurring earlier in Chinese children. While the cause is multifactorial, overweight and obesity are associated with earlier puberty onset. The currently used normative pubertal data of precocious puberty may not be applicable to diagnose precocious puberty.

Abstract: To investigate the status of height and weight of 3-18-year-old children and adolescents in urban China, and to provide a basis for establishing puberty phase specific curves for age-specific height and age-specific weight. A cross-sectional survey of 218 185 children and adolescents aged 3-18 years in urban China was conducted by using the method of stratified random cluster sampling from January 2017 to December 2019. The sampling areas included 12 provinces municipalities in China and autonomous regions in total. Data were collected on weight, height, waist circumference, hip circumference and secondary sexual characteristics. The generalized additive model for location, scale, and shape (GAMLSS) was employed to establish percentile reference values and growth curves of height and weight for boys and girls aged 3-18 years. Wilcoxon rank sum test was applied to compare the P value of height and weight between children of each Tanner stage and children of the same age ignoring the different puberty phase. The 3rd, 50th, and 97th percentile curves for height and weight for age were developed for boys and girls aged 3-18 years. The 3rd, 50th, and 97th percentile curves for age-specific height and age-specific weight for each puberty phase were developed for boys and girls. Compared with all children ignoring the different puberty phase, boys aged 9 and over and girls aged 7 and over who are at Tanner stage 1 showed shorter height and lighter weight than those of the same age group (all <0.01), the difference ranges of height at P are -4.0 to -0.6 cm for boys, and -4.4 to 0.5 cm for girls; the difference ranges of weight are -4.8 to 0.4 kg for boys, and -4.0 to -0.3 kg for girls; children at Tanner stage 2 & 3 initially were taller and heavier than those of the same age group; and later grew shorter and lighter than those of the same age group, the two sets of curves cross over; boys aged 16 and under and girl aged under 14 who are at Tanner stage 4 were taller and heavier than those of the same age group (all <0.01), the difference ranges of height at P are 0.2 to 10.0 cm for boys, and 0.2 to 9.4 cm for girls; the difference ranges of weight at P are 0.7 to 10.9 kg for boys, and 1.0 to 11.2 kg for girls, and the differences showed narrowing trend with age. The puberty phase specific growth curves of age-specific height and age-specific weight for boys and girls aged 3-18 years are established, it is useful for clinical work to evaluate physical development of children at different puberty phases.

Abstract:To describe the seasonal growth patterns in Shanghai infants and to investigate the long based effect of birth season on postnatal early human growth. This community based longitudinal study was carried out in Fenglin community,Shanghai,China.The study series consisted of 4 128 full term children,born between 1st January 1980 and 31 st December 1990.Children was followed up monthly from 1 to 6 months,three monthly from 6 to 12 months,six monthly from 12 to 24 months.The year was divided into four seasons:spring,summer,autumn and winter.Weight gain,length gain and changes in body mass index(BMI) were calculated over the seasons of the year. The data demonstrated a clear and consistent seasonality in growth velocity for length,weight and body mass index(BMI) over all birth year cohorts.The infants tended to grow faster in height in spring and summer and faster in weight and BMI in autumn and winter in all age intervals.There was some long term seasonal effect on early human growth;infants born in the summer attained higher body length than those born in other seasons at each age,whereas the differences of mean SDS values for weight and BMI in the four seasons were less marked.The mean length SDS value at 1 month of age,delta SDS value between 1 to 24 months of age,and the mean length SDS value at 12 months of age were all significantly( P 0.05) associated with birth months.Their cubic regression functions were:Length SDS 1month = 0.881 241+0.433 532*Birthmonth 0.048 418*Birthmonth 2+0.001 364*Birthmonth 3;Delta length SDS 1,24months =0.109 794 0.285 579*Birthmonth+0.035 611*Birthmonth 2 0.001 196*Birthmonth 3;Length SDS 24months = 0.720 517+0.134 98*Birthmonth-0.012 696*Birthmonth 2+0.000 236*Birthmonth 3.According to these functions,the mean length SDS value at 1 month of age was higher in infants born in June than those born in January,the mean difference about 0.8 standard deviation score,or 2.0 cm.At 24 months of age this difference was reduced to about 0.3 standard deviation score,or 0.7 cm. [Conclusions] There is a clear seasonality in growth in Shanghai infants.Birth month has some association with attained size,but this is reduced during the first two years of life.Seasonality in infant growth represents a significant potential confounding factor in growth studies,such as nutritional clinical trials.

Abstract:ObjectiveThis study was aimed to examine the effect of feeding patterns on growth and nutritional status of children aged 0 similar to 24 months.MethodsWe conducted a cohort study with an initial sample of 927 children. Considering the follow-up losses, 903, 897, 895, 897, 883, 827 and 750 children were followed up at 1, 3, 6, 8, 12, 18 and 24 months, respectively. Children were grouped according to exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) duration in the first 6 months: (1) never EBF; (2) EBF <= 3 months: EBF <= 3 months and stopped BF after 3 months or EBF <= 3 months and BF = 6 months or EBF <= 3 months and BF after 3 months, had formula and/or solids; (3) EBF for 3 similar to 6 months: BF < 3 months and EBF for 3 similar to 6 months or EBF for 3 similar to 6 months and BF < 3 months, had formula and/or solids; (4) EBF = 6 months. We used Z-scores to evaluate the growth and nutritional status of children, used the generalized estimation equation to compare the difference between feeding patterns.ResultsThe generalized estimation equation results showed that Weight-for-age Z-score (WAZ), Length-for-age Z-score (LAZ), and Weight-for-length Z-score (WLZ) in different feeding patterns had statistical significance. The WAZ in EBF for 6 months group was higher in the first 8 months, in never EBF group was higher after 12 months old; the LAZ in EBF for 6 month group was lower than other groups; the WLZ in EBF for 6 months group was higher than EBF for 3 similar to 6 months group. The EBF <= 3 months group had higher underweight, stunting, and wasting rates. The EBF for 6 months had a higher stunting rate; the never EBF and EBF for 6 months groups had higher overweight and obesity rates.ConclusionsIn conclusion, different feeding patterns affect growth and nutritional status in children, so proper guidelines should be implemented to improve nutritional status and promote the growth of children.

Abstract:Objective: Small-for-gestational-age (SGA) infants are at risk of impaired growth and developmental outcomes, even for those who were born at full term. The growth trajectory of full-term SGA infants remains unknown. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the growth trajectory of full-term SGA infants from birth to 3 years old in East China. Methods: Full-term SGA infants were followed up from birth to 3 years old. The weight and length were measured at 3, 6, 12, 18, 24, 30 and 36 months. Rate of catch-up growth and rates of growth deviations including short stature, emaciation, underweight, overweight and obesity, were calculated at different time points. Latent class analysis was applied to describe growth trajectories from birth to 36 months. Results: A total of 816 full-term SGA infants were enrolled in this study and 303 had complete follow-up data at 3, 6, 12, 18, 24, 30 and 36 months. At 24 months, the rate of catch-up growth was 42.4% in girls and 48.6% in boys; while at 36 months, this rate was 43.3% in girls and 52.1% in boys. The latent class analysis identified two trajectories of weight and length in boys and girls. Girls showed different growth trajectories of weight since 12 months compared with boys. Conclusions: Our study reported a relatively low rate of catch-up growth in full-term SGA infants and has identified different growth trajectories of length and weight in boys and girls. We call for attention from health professionals on the growth trajectory of full-term SGA infants to eventually promote their health potentials.
Physical Growth of Children in Urban, Suburban and Rural Mainland China: a Study of 20 Years Change.

Abstract:Objective To describe secular trends on physical growth of children in China during the year of 1985-2005 and to analyze the urban-suburban-rural difference and its change. Methods The measurements of height, weight and chest circumference obtained from two serial national cross-sectional surveys for children aged 0 to 7 years in China were used to analyze the secular trends, and the growth differences among urban, suburban and rural children were compared. Results The average weight and height for both boys and girls from urban, suburban and rural areas have significantly increased in most age groups during the past 20 years; The average chest circumference increased slightly, ranging from 0.0 to 2.0 cm. From 1985 to 2005, the urban-suburban difference in height had become smaller, and that in weight showed similar trend for children under 3 years old but became larger after 3 years old; the suburban-rural difference both in height and weight became larger after 6 months old. The increment per decade in height was the greatest in the suburban group while the greatest increment in weight was the urban group. Conclusion Positive secular trends were observed among urban, suburban and rural areas in Chinese children under 7 years old during the 1980s and the 2000s, reflecting a rapid socio-economic development in China.

Abstract:Objective::To build a reference fetal growth chart for the Chinese population based on fetal ultrasound measurements.Methods::This was a multicenter, population-based retrospective cohort study. Longitudinal ultrasound measurement data were collected from 24 hospitals in 18 provinces of China from 1 st September through 31 st October of 2019. The estimated fetal weight (EFW) was calculated based on head circumference, abdominal circumference, and femur length using Hadlock formula 3. Fetal growth curves were estimated using a two-level linear regression model with cubic splines. All participants were divided into two groups: the northern group ( n = 5829) and the southern group ( n = 3246) based on the geographical division of China and male fetus group ( n = 4775) and female fetus group ( n = 4300) based on fetal gender. The EFW was compared by fetal gender and geographical group. All statistical models were adjusted for maternal sociodemographic characteristics. Results::A total of 9075 participants with 31,700 ultrasound measurement records were included in this study. Male fetuses demonstrated significantly larger EFW compared to female ones starting at 16 weeks of gestation and extending to delivery (global test P < 0.01). The overall geographic difference in EFW was significant (global test P = 0.03), and week-specific comparisons showed that the northern group had a greater EFW starting at 15 weeks of gestation and extending to 29 weeks of gestation, although this difference did not extend to the time of delivery. The Z-score of EFW confirmed that our Chinese fetal growth charts differed from previously published standards. Conclusion::This study provides EFW and ultrasound biometric reference measurements for Chinese fetuses and reveals differences from other fetal growth charts. The chart is worth promoting in more regions of China but should be tested prudently before use.

Abstract:In preterm infants (i.e. the gestational age less than 37 weeks), postnatal growth remains a concern. This study used multicenter longitudinal data from China's Under 5 Child Nutrition and Health Surveillance System to investigate the postnatal growth in the weight and length of preterm infants. Gender-stratified differences in weight and length were assessed between preterm and term infants. 1221 preterm infants and 1221 matched term infants were included. The rates of growth in weight and length in preterm infants was greater than those in term infants, especially from the first to sixth month. The rates were higher in males compared to females in the first 3 months. The differences of weight and length between preterm and term infants decreased with increasing age, however, these measurements did not reach the level of their term peers until 12 months before adjusting for gestational age. The median values of weight and length were even larger in preterm infants in the first month after adjusting for gestational age.

Abstract:Objective To know the growth rhythm of body proportions of 0-18 years old Chinese healthy children and adolescents,and analyze gender difference,regional difference and secular changes of body proportions.Methods Healthy Han children and adolescents in 9 provinces(cities) from two national representative cross-sectional surveys named National Growth Survey of Children under 7 years in the Nine Cities of China in 2005 and The Physical Fitness and Health Surveillance of Chinese School Students in 2005 were enrolled.The data of the above-mentioned two investigations in 1985 were used to analyze the secular changes of the ratio of sitting height to leg length(crown-rump length)(SH/LL).Crown-rump length and length were measured before 3 years old,and from 3 years old onward,sitting height and height were measured.Leg length was obtained by subtracting sitting height(crown-rump length) from height(length).Results①SH/LL decreased gradually with age and bottomed at 12-13 years of age in boys and 10-11 years of age in girls.Then SH/LL increased slightly and kept flatting after 17 years of age.②Before 11 years old,the gender difference was not obvious in SH/LL,and after that SH/LL of girls was slightly higher than that of boys.The gender difference was relatively large at the age of 13 years.SH/LL of urban and rural children was similar before 6-7 years of age,after that SH/LL of rural children was slightly higher than that of urban children and then the difference wasn't obvious after 12-13 years of age.The SH/LL charts were almost coincident in different areas.③The SH/LL of 7-12 years old children slightly decreased and the SH/LL of preschool and late pubertal children had no obvious change from 1985 to 2005.Conclusions SH/LL is regularly changed with age in 0-18 years old Chinese children and adolescents.There is no gender difference in pre-pubertal children,and SH/LL of girls is higher slightly than that of boys after post-pubertal.There are not obvious urban-rural difference,regional difference or secular change in SH/LL in China.

Abstract:Abstract Most published newborn growth references are based on conventional monitoring data that usually included both low- and high-risk pregnancies. We sought to develop a set of neonatal growth standards constructed from only a large sample of low-risk pregnancies. A total of 24,375 naturally conceived singleton live births with gestational ages of 24–42 weeks were collected in 69 hospitals in thirteen Chinese cities between 2015 and 2018. Unhealthy infants or those with high-risk mother were excluded. Smoothed percentile curves of six anthropometric indicators were established using the Generalized Additive Model for Location, Scale and Shape. The 3rd, 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th, 90th, and 97th percentile references for birth weight, length, head circumference, weight/length, body mass index, and ponderal index were calculated for neonates with gestational ages of 24–42 weeks. This set of neonatal growth standards with six anthropometric indicators can provide more tools for growth and nutrition assessment and body proportionality in neonatal clinical practice. These standards might also help to show the differences between growth curves based on low-risk and mixed low- and high-risk pregnancies.

Associations of head circumference trajectories and growth-sensitive periods during the first two years of life with adolescent cognitive, emotional and behavioral health: A birth cohort in rural western China

Abstract:Abstract Purpose The associations of early-life head circumference (HC) with child cognition and emotional and behavioral health among generally healthy population remain unclear. We aimed to examine the associations of early-life HC trajectories with adolescent neurodevelopmental and mental health and to identify HC growth-sensitive period. MethodsWe conducted a prospective, community-based birth cohort in rural western China, and 745 adolescents aged 10-14 years were followed between June to December 2016. We repeatedly assessed child HC for eight times during the first two years of life, and adolescent cognitive and emotional and behavioral outcomes using Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children and Youth Self-Report, respectively. We applied group-based trajectory modeling to identify HC trajectories and used conditional growth to derive sensitive periods. ResultsWe identified five distinct HC trajectories characterized as Start below average-then decrease (7.8% of the sample), Start below average-then increase (6.8%), Start average-then decrease (33.4%), Consistently average (37.9%), and Consistently above average (14.1%). Infants in the trajectory of consistently above average had higher cognitive scores at early adolescence as compared to those from suboptimal trajectories, with adjusted mean differences ranging from -2.84 to -8.99 points. The conditional gains show that the sensitive HC growth period appeared to be between 0-6 months. While we found null associations between HC measures and adolescent emotional and behavioral health.ConclusionsRoutine HC measurements especially during the first 6 months were recommended for monitoring child cognition but for mental health. Integrated prenatal and postnatal interventions should be pursued to promote child development.
Low length/weight growth trajectories of early-term infants during the first year: evidence from a longitudinal study in China

Abstract:Objective To identify common length, weight and body mass index (BMI) growth trajectories of term infants during infancy, and to determine their association with early-term infants. Design Prospective longitudinal study. Setting Wuhan, China. Patients A total of 4308 term infants (born at 37–41 weeks of gestation) were included. All term infants were single live birth with no defects and birth weight ≥2500 g, and their mothers were permanent residents of Wuhan for more than 2 years. After excluding 887 infants, a total of 3421 term infants (1028 early-term infants born at 37–38 weeks of gestation and 2393 full-term infants born at 39–41 weeks of gestation) entered the statistical analysis stage. Main outcome measures Patterns of length, weight and BMI growth trajectories by using group-based trajectory modelling. Results Three distinct physical growth trajectories were identified as follows: length: low stable (1056, 30.9%), moderate stable (1887, 55.2%) and high increasing (477, 13.9%); weight: low stable (1031, 30.1%), moderate stable (1884, 55.1%) and high increasing (505, 14.8%); BMI: low stable (689, 20.1%), moderate stable (2167, 63.4%) and high increasing (564, 16.5%). Compared with the full-term infants, early-term infants were more likely to remain at low-stable trajectory in length (OR: 1.40; 95% CI: 1.19 to 1.66) and weight (OR:1.29; 95% CI: 1.09 to 1.53). These associations were still statistically significant after adjusting potential confounders and were more evident among girls in the stratified analysis. There was no statistical association between BMI trajectory patterns and gestational age categories. Conclusion Our results suggested the heterogeneity of term infants existed in length, weight and BMI growth trajectories of early childhood. Compared with full-term birth, early-term birth was related to low length and weight trajectories rather than BMI trajectory. Further research is needed to evaluate the duration of these low trajectories and their possible long-term health effects.

Abstract:Background: This study focused on comparing the applicability and efficacy of the World Health Organization (WHO) growth standards and the China growth charts in diagnosing malnutrition and indicating nutritional interventions in preterm infants. Methods: Six hundred and eighty-three preterm infants were involved and their anthropometric data were collected. The proportion of weight and head circumference less than the 10th percentile (P-10), weight less than the 25th percentile (P-25), and weight for length greater than the 90th percentile (P-90) identified by the WHO growth standards and the China growth charts were compared. Results: At corrected age (CA) 1 similar to< 2 months (m), the proportion of head circumference P-90 assessed by the WHO growth standards was greater than that assessed by the China growth charts. Conclusions: Compared with the China growth charts, the WHO growth standards can further reduce the number of diagnoses of abnormal physical growth, are more helpful in avoiding overnutrition interventions, and are more sensitive in the early detection of delayed head circumference growth.

Abstract:Background: Growth charts are an important method for evaluating a child's health, growth, and nutritional status. It is essential to monitor the growth of children and adolescents using growth charts. Objectives: To present body mass index (BMI)-for-age references reflecting children's growth in Shanxi. We also compare our new data with growth references of other cities of China and World Health Organization (WHO) growth standards. Methods: A stratified cluster random sampling method was used to recruit 5461 children and adolescents aged 6-17 years. Height and weight were measured and BMI was calculated. The LMS method was used to calculate the percentile values of body mass index by sex and age. Smoothed BMI-for-age growth curves were presented for both sexes and compared with reference data from other cities of China and WHO. Results: BMI centiles increased with age but with different patterns in both boys and girls. The centile curves from the 3rd to the 50th had a slight increase, while a sharp increase was seen from 11 to 17 years in boys and from 6 to 14 years in girls in the higher centiles. In comparison with other cities of China, the values for the 50th percentile are higher than those reported for children from China 2009, Shanghai, Changsha and China 2010 in both sexes. In comparison with WHO growth references, Chinese girls and boys had higher values in all percentiles, whereas curves of girls look roughly the same. The medians for BMI in Shanxi increase linearly from 6 to 17 years in boys. Conclusions: The BMI percentiles of children aged 6-17 years in Shanxi differed significantly from the growth reference curves of other cities of China and WHO. Recommending the provision of BMI reference curves for local children and adolescents to assess their growth and development and monitor their nutritional status. Early detection of overweight and obesity in children provides a scientific basis for the prevention and control of overweight and obesity in children.

Abstract:The importance of diet quality on children's growth is being increasingly recognized. The Chinese Adolescent Cohort (CAC) is a longitudinal cohort study to comprehensively investigate the health impacts of nutritional factors on child growth. From 2013 to 2018, 6,967 children aged 6-8 years have been recruited from 23 primary schools in Sichuan, Guizhou, and Chongqing, which have been planned to be followed up annually until their age of 15 years. Regular assessments included the measurement of height, weight, waist circumference, and skinfold thicknesses; pubertal development was examined by trained investigators according to Tanner stages; dietary intake was obtained by three 24-h recalls and food frequency questionnaire; validated questionnaires were used to estimate socio-demographic characteristics, physical activity, and sedentary behaviors. Findings from the CAC baseline and the first follow-up data suggested that higher protein intake among girls and unhealthy eating habits among children might increase the risk for childhood obesity. Also, higher intakes of grain and meat and lower overall diet quality and intakes of dietary fiber and tuber might be associated with advanced pubertal development. Those results indicated that the CAC study could contribute to the development of strategies for optimizing Chinese children's health.

Abstract:Objective:To know about the growth and nutrition status of 0～18 month children in Guangdong and provide evidence to promote children' growth.Methods:3 844 children were collected from the urban,suburb and rural area of Guangdong to conduct an investigation about physical,health and intellectual status.Results:Weights and heights of the urban and suburb infants aged 4 month grew higher than 10 year ago.The anthropometric data of 1～5 month infants reached even exceeded the reference values in 1995.Comparing to the WHO reference,the anthropometric data of infants before 6 month reached even greater,but after 6 month lagged behind.Rate of stunting,underweight,wasting,overweight/obesity was 2.6%,5.1%,3.0%,2.0% respectively and rate of stunting,underweight,wasting increased significantly after 6 month.Rate of diarrhea,respiratory infection,anemia was 16.6%,35.3%,25.8% respectively.MDI of 4,6 and 8 month infants were 87.67±12.54 and PDI were 88.99±11.06.Conclusion:The growth status of 0～18 month children in Guangdong has improved greatly and rate of disease is low.But the anthropometric data of children after 6 month also lag behind the WHO reference.
Secular Trend in Growth between 1980～ 1996 in Shanghai Children

Abstract:【Objective】 To describe secular changes in body size in Shanghai children. 【Metiods】 The study series consisted of 6,018 longitudinal followed full-term children, bom between 1 January 1980 and 31st December 1990 in Fenglin commu nity, Shanghai. Children were followed-up monthly from 1 to 6 months, three monthly from 6 to 12 months, six monthly from 12 to 36 months, and yearly from 3 years to 6 years of age. 【Results】 Weight for children born between1980-1990 was sinilar to or above national standard (1985), however, lower than NCHS/WHO standard from 9 months to 24 months of age for children Dom at early and middle of80's and again close to and above NCHS/WHO standard from 3 years of age and onward. Weight for children born at later of 80's at all ages were all above NCHS/WHO standard. Height was sinilar to both national standard (1985) and NCHS/WHO standard before 3 years of age, and a little bit higher than those two standards after 3 years of age. The data clearly showed a positive secular trend in growth in Shanghai children over the period of 1980 ～ 1996. At 6 years of age, the mean increase in weight, height and body mass index (BMI) were 1.24kg, 2.65cmand0.21kg/m2per decade. 【Conclusions】 Shanghai children have a posi tive secular change since 1980.
