Understanding the Phase-Induced Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution Reaction Activity on FeOOH Nanostructures

Abstract:The crystalline phase plays a crucial, yet not well-understood, role in enhancing the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance of iron oxyhydroxide (FeOOH) materials. Herein, single-phase (α-, β-, and δ-) and mixed-phase (α/β-, α/δ-, and β/δ-) FeOOH nanostructures have been successfully synthesized through a controlled solvothermal route. Combined analyses of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and partial density of state calculation suggest that rich oxygen vacancies confined in the mixed-phase FeOOH samples (with optimized electronic structure) can effectively improve the OER activity. Notably, the mixed phase of β/δ-FeOOH displays an enhanced OER activity and stability in the alkaline media, with a very low overpotential of ∼180 mV vs a reversible hydrogen electrode at 10 mA cm–2. Understanding of the phase-induced activity may also pave a pathway for the design and synthesis of highly efficient electrocatalysts.

Abstract:High-performance oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalyst is critical for improving the water splitting efficiency. In this work, an efficient self-supported OER catalyst was prepared by electrodeposition of nickel-iron layered double hydroxide nanosheets on titanium mesh substrate (NiFe-LDH/Ti-mesh). This self-supporting design exposes abundant active sites. At 100 mA cm(-2), the NiFe-LDH/Ti-mesh shows a low overpotential of 310 mV in 1.0 M KOH. When assembled into an anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer, it can run stably over 200 h. In-situ Raman reveals that the NiFe-LDH/Ti-mesh surface was reconstructed into NiFeOOH active species. In-situ infrared shows that the introduction of Fe promotes the evolution of oxygen intermediates. Theoretical calculations reveal a weakened binding strength of *OH and accelerated formation of *O in OER by the introduction of Fe. This study provides a facile approach for developing self-supported high-performance OER electrocatalyst, and advances the understanding on the origin of NiFe-based catalysts as well.

Abstract:Developing cost-effective electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and elucidating the structural transformation is urgent but remains a significant challenge. Here, we report a scalable approach to prepare welldefined Ni nanoparticles supported by nitrogen-doped carbon (Ni/NC), which possess superior catalytic activity and durability for OER, especially for the sample pyrolyzed at 600 degrees C. Moreover, the dynamic surface reconstruction of as-prepared catalysts during OER was detailedly investigated by ex-situ characterizations and operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy combined with the difference method that is a novel technique to probe the subtle structural changes. Our findings demonstrate that a surface oxidation to Ni(OH)2 on Ni nanoparticles occurs at the beginning of OER, and then a reversible phase transitions between Ni(OH)2 and NiOOH depends on the applied potential. Thus, this work develops a new method for preparing low-cost Ni-based electrocatalyst and sheds light on the direct observation of surface structure evolution during the OER.

Abstract:The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a crucial reaction in water splitting, metal–air batteries, and other electrochemical conversion technologies. Rationally designed catalysts with rich active sites and high intrinsic activity have been considered as a hopeful strategy to address the sluggish kinetics for OER. However, constructing such active sites in non-noble catalysts still faces grand challenges. To this end, we fabricate a Ni2P@Fe2P core–shell structure with outperforming performance toward OER via chemical transformation of rationally designed Ni-MOF hybrid nanosheets. Specifically, the Ni-MOF nanosheets and their supported Fe-based nanomaterials were in situ transformed into porous Ni2P@Fe2P core–shell nanosheets composed of Ni2P and Fe2P nanodomains in homogenous dispersion via a phosphorization process. When employed as the OER electrocatalyst, the Ni2P@Fe2P core–shell nanosheets exhibits excellent OER performance, with a low overpotential of 238/247 mV to drive 50/100 mA cm−2, a small Tafel slope of 32.91 mV dec−1, as well as outstanding durability, which could be mainly ascribed to the strong electronic interaction between Ni2P and Fe2P nanodomains stabilizing more Ni and Fe atoms with higher valence. These high-valence metal sites promote the generation of high-active Ni/FeOOH to enhance OER activity.

Abstract:Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) as a key process is of vital importance to sustainable and green hydrogen energy scenario. Its sluggish kinetics is tightly associated with stubborn O-O bond formation, where constructing stable superoxo/peroxo-like (O2)n− species (typically e.g. NiOO*) and activating them on the catalyst surfaces have been considered as one of most efficient strategies to accelerate oxygen evolution kinetics. Herein, we have purposely designed core-shell Ni5P4@NiOOH heterostructure nanosheet arrays, which are constructed by an in-situ electrochemical self-adaptive process of the corresponding Ni5P4 precursor, and therefore demonstrate a sharp rise in activation of NiOO* on surfaces by the synergy between interface and oxygen vacancy (Vo) created during OER. By the combination studies of contrast experiments with or without interface or oxygen vacancies and theoretical calculations, we find that the interface between Ni5P4 and amorphous NiOOH ultrathin layer can promote the redistribution of electron density on the catalyst surface and optimize the Gibbs free energy of multiple adsorbed intermediates, while the numerous Vo activates NiOO* species in the Ni5P4@NiOOH catalyst. The interface-Vo synergy therefore enables an ultralow overpotential of only 273 mV@50 mA cm−2 and a superior OER activity with up to 21- and 70-fold rise in kinetic current density under the overpotential of 270 mV over those of Ni(OH)2@NiOOH and NiO@NiOOH counterparts, respectively.

Abstract:Developing high-efficiency and steady nickel-iron based catalysts are of great significance for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, the rarity of active sites exposed to electrolytes is difficult, limiting their OER properties. Herein, an innovative double-etch strategy has been developed to synthesize Fe– nanosheet supported on nickel foam. Where NH 4 + was applied to change the morphology of precursor (NiNH 4 PO 4 ) from one-dimensional (1D) to two-dimensional (2D) to expose a larger solution contact area and the etch of OH − thinned the layered structure in the process of transforming Fe–NiNH 4 PO 4 for Fe-β-Ni(OH) 2 . And the double etching strategy makes Fe– possess excellent electrocatalytic OER performance, when reaching the current densities of 100 and 1000 mA cm −2 , the obtained catalytic materials only required a low overpotential of 260 and 320 mV, respectively. Meanwhile, the stability of the structure was also verified in strong corrosion environment (1 M KOH), and the catalytic activity presents unattenuated after stable operation at 100 mA cm −2 for 80 h. Density functional theory (DFT) confirmed that the optimized adsorption intermediates and conductivity were the keys to the better performance. The morphology control strategy of this work provided a significant reference for the improved OER properties of transition metal-based catalysts.

Abstract:Rationally designing active and durable catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of primary importance in water splitting. Perovskite oxides (ABO3) with versatile structures and multiple physicochemical properties have triggered considerable interest in the OER. The leaching of A site cations can create nanostructures and amorphous motifs on the perovskite matrix, thus facilitating the OER process. However, selectively dissolving A site cations and simultaneously obtaining more active amorphous motifs derived from the B site cations remains a great challenge. Herein, a top‐down strategy is proposed to transform bulk crystalline perovskite (LaNiO3) into a nanostructured amorphous hydroxide by FeCl3 post‐treatment, resulting in an extremely low overpotential of 189 mV at 10 mA cm−2. The top‐down‐constructed amorphous catalyst with a large surface area has dual NiFe active sites, where high‐valence Ni3+‐based edge‐sharing octahedral frameworks are surrounded by interstitial distorted Fe octahedra and contribute to the superior OER performance. This top‐down strategy provides a valid way to design novel perovskite‐derived catalysts.

Abstract:The exploration of catalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) using the advantages of interface engineering is an attractive strategy for achieving highly efficient electrochemical water splitting. In this study, Fe-doped multiphase nickel hydroxide (Fe-α,β-Ni(OH) 2 ) was successfully prepared with a unique interface by modulating the Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ ratios in a feasible one-step hydrothermal process. This multiphase catalyst powder significantly contributed to the OER performance, with a low overpotential of 259 mV at 10 mA cm −2 (grown on carbon cloth substrates, 260 mV at 100 mA cm −2 ) and excellent catalytic stability during the 70-h OER process under extreme conditions. Based on the experimental and theoretical results, the unique interface between the Fe-α-Ni(OH) 2 and Fe-β-Ni(OH) 2 phases optimized the adsorption free energies of oxygen-containing intermediates and accelerated the formation of Ni 3+ active species during the OER, leading to a large electrochemically active surface area (ECSA), which considerably enhanced the OER performance. This study provides novel insight into interface engineering and the design of high-performance OER catalysts based on earth-abundant transition-metal elements.

Abstract:Iron-based (oxy)hydroxides are especially attractive electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) owing to their earth abundance, low cost, and nontoxicity. However, poor OER kinetics on the surface restricts the performance of the FeOOH electrocatalyst. Herein, a highly efficient and stable Ni(OH)(2)/beta-like FeOOH electrocatalyst is obtained by facile electroactivation treatment. The activated Ni(OH)(2)/beta-like FeOOH sample indicates an overpotential of 300 mV at 10 mAcm(-2) for the OER, and no clear current decay after 50 h of testing; this is comparable to the most efficient nickel- and cobalt-based electrocatalysts on planar substrates. Furthermore, studies suggest that beta-like FeOOH plays a key role in remarkably enhancing the performance during the electroactivation process owing to its metastable tunnel structure with a lower barrier for interface diffusion of Ni2+ ions between the bilayer electrocatalyst. This study develops a new strategy to explore efficient and low-cost electrocatalysts and deepens understanding of bilayer electrocatalysts for the OER.
Confined Carburization-Engineered Synthesis of Ultrathin Nickel Oxide/nickel Heterostructured Nanosheets for Enhanced Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:Low-cost and highly effective transition metal oxides are being widely researched as one of the most promising electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, traditional transition metal oxides suffer from sluggish reaction kinetics due to their intrinsically poor electronic conductivity. Herein, we demonstrate a facile polydopamine-assisted carburization strategy for the confined synthesis of novel NiOx/Ni ultrathin heterostructured nanosheets. Benefiting from the large exposed surface area and fast charge transfer, the obtained ultrathin NiOx/Ni heterostructured nanosheets exhibit an overpotential of 358 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) and a small Tafel slope of 51 mV dec(-1), outperforming other reported representative nickel oxide based materials and commercial Ir/C catalysts. In addition, a sustainable and efficient overall water-splitting electrolyzer integrated ultrathin NiOx/Ni nanosheets with commercial Pt/C can be effectively and stably driven by solar cells.
Surface Phase Engineering Modulated Iron‐Nickel Nitrides/Alloy Nanospheres with Tailored d‐Band Center for Efficient Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays a key role in many electrochemical energy conversion systems, but it is a kinetically sluggish reaction and requires a large overpotential to deliver appreciable current, especially for the non-noble metal electrocatalysts. In this study, the authors report a surface phase engineering strategy to improve the OER performance of transition metal nitrides (TMNs). The iron-nickel nitrides/alloy nanospheres (FeNi3 -N) wrapped in carbon are synthesized, and the optimized FeNi3 -N catalyst displays dual-phase nitrides on the surface induced by atom migration phenomenon, resulting from the different migration rates of metal atoms during the nitridation process. It shows excellent OER performance in alkaline media with an overpotential of 222 mV at 10 mA cm-2 , a small Tafel slope of 41.53 mV dec-1 , and long-term durability under high current density (>0.5 A cm-2 ) for at least 36 h. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further reveal that the dual-phase nitrides are favorable to decrease the energy barrier, modulate the d-band center to balance the absorption and desorption of the intermediates, and thus promote the OER electrochemical performance. This strategy may shed light on designing OER and other catalysts based on surface phase engineering.

Abstract:Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is the main limiting step of overall water splitting, and it is crucial to develop high-performance electrocatalysts for increasing the OER efficiency. Herein, a tin layer is coated on the nickel-cobalt foam surface with an electrodeposition technique and the multiple-phases of tri-metal Sn-Co-Ni phosphide (SnPi@CoP-Ni5P4/NCF) are simultaneously formed with a simple phosphating step. The synthesized SnPi@CoP-Ni5P4/NCF exhibits an excellent electrocatalytic performance for OER, which can transfer the current densities of 10 and 600 mA cm-2 (j10 and j600) in 1.0 M KOH with low overpotentials of 180 and 364 mV, respectively. The ultra-stable OER process is characterized by a low decay (2.1 %) over 50 h I-t test with j100. The quantum chemistry simulations reveal the synergistic effects of the tri-metal phosphide, while the oriented crystal phases of SnPi@CoP-Ni5P4 enable the electron redistribution for lowering H2O adsorption energy and decreasing the energy barrier for dissociation. The in situ Raman results suggest that the formed NiOOH and CoOOH act as the active intermediates for OER in the alkaline medium.

Abstract:Nickel-based materials are the most promising electrocatalysts to date for the alkaline oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Identifying the phase transformation in the catalytic process and comparing the theoretical catalytic activity of different crystal facets are important for understanding OER mechanism and rational design. Herein, we calculate the theoretical catalytic activity of the basal plane and edge sites, respectively-two representative configurations in the OER-activate γ-phase NiOOH. DFT theoretical results suggest that the d -band center of Ni site in the basal plane configuration is −2.37 eV, which is closer to Fermi level than that of the edge configuration (−3.02 eV). The above results lead to the stronger adsorption capacity between the metal active sites and the oxygen intermediates. The consequence of Gibbs free energy indicates that the Ni site in the basal plane configuration (0.75 V) has slightly higher theoretical catalytic activity than the edge configuration (0.81 V). The charge density difference and Bader charge analysis results reveal that the hybridization interactions in the basal plane configuration are stronger and have more electron transfer between the surface Ni sites and absorbed OER intermediates. This present study highlights that regulating the optimal electronic structure of metal active site is conductive to high catalytic activity.

Abstract:Due to its high activity and stability, nickel oxide (NiO) has shown significant promise as an electrocatalyst for the alkaline oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In parallel, NiO exhibits a well-known electrochromic phenomenon, changing its optical properties in response to an applied electric potential. This study investigates the relationship between NiO phase changes that occur during the OER and the connected optical modulation using operando UV-visible reflectance spectroscopy. The correlation between the OER activity and the electrochromic behavior of NiO is explored, providing insights into the underlying physicochemical mechanisms governing both phenomena. Strong reduction of the reflected light at higher applied potentials cannot be attributed solely to the change in optical bandgap due to the phase change or the change in the material's refractive index when different phases form. Therefore, in-gap states responsible for increasing the absorption at higher applied potentials were experimentally characterized by ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The results show that phase changes in NiO during OER influence its optical absorption characteristics, which in turn give access to following active phase changes of the electrocatalyst material through a non-invasive, optical, operando probe in real time allowing for kinetic studies of the involved solid-state conversion reactions.

Ultrahigh-Loading of Ir Single Atoms on NiO Matrix to Dramatically Enhance Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:Engineering single-atom electrocatalysts with high-loading amount holds great promise in energy conversion and storage application. Herein, we report a facile and economical approach to achieve an unprecedented high loading of single Ir atoms, up to ∼18wt%, on the nickel oxide (NiO) matrix as the electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). It exhibits an overpotential of 215 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a remarkable OER current density in alkaline electrolyte, surpassing NiO and IrO2 by 57 times and 46 times at 1.49 V vs RHE, respectively. Systematic characterizations, including X-ray absorption spectroscopy and aberration-corrected Z-contrast imaging, demonstrate that the Ir atoms are atomically dispersed at the outermost surface of NiO and are stabilized by covalent Ir-O bonding, which induces the isolated Ir atoms to form a favorable ∼4+ oxidation state. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the substituted single Ir atom not only serves as the active site for OER but also activates the surface reactivity of NiO, which thus leads to the dramatically improved OER performance. This synthesis method of developing high-loading single-atom catalysts can be extended to other single-atom catalysts and paves the way for industrial applications of single-atom catalysts.
