Abstract:One of the key factors limiting the high power applications for a type-II superconductor is the irreversibility line Hirr(T) which reflects the very boundary of resistive dissipation in the phase diagram of magnetic field versus temperature. In cuprate family, the Y-, Bi-, Hg- and Tl-based systems have superconducting transition temperatures exceeding the liquid nitrogen boiling temperature (~77K). However, the toxic elements Hg and Tl in the latter two systems strongly constrain the possible applications. The Bi-based (2223) system is nontoxic, but the irreversibility magnetic field is strongly suppressed in the liquid nitrogen temperature region. For this purpose, the best perspective so far is relying on the YBa2Cu3O7 (Tc~90 K) system which is nontoxic and has a relatively high irreversibility magnetic field. Here we report the study of a nontoxic superconductor (Cu,C)Ba2Ca3Cu4O11+{\delta} with Tc = 116K. It is found that the irreversibility magnetic field is unprecedentedly high among all superconductors and it thus provides a great potential of applications in the liquid nitrogen temperature region.

This discovery may be extended in a general sense to other layered cuprates and stimulate high power applications of cuprate superconductors in liquid nitrogen temperature region.

Abstract:(Cu,C)Ba2Ca3Cu4Oy is a nontoxic cuprate superconducting material with a superconducting transition temperature of about 116 K. Recently, it was found that bulk samples of this material synthesized under high pressure hold the highest irreversibility line among all the superconductors, which is very promising for its application in the liquid nitrogen temperature field. In this work, high-temperature (Cu,C)Ba2Ca3Cu4Oy superconducting films with large irreversible fields were prepared on SrLaAlO4(00l) substrates by pulsed laser deposition. The substrate temperature during deposition proved to be the most important parameter determining the morphology and critical temperature of the superconductors, with 680 °C considered to be the optimum temperature. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results showed that the (Cu,C)Ba2Ca3Cu4Oy films prepared under optimal conditions exhibited epitaxial growth with the a-axis perpendicular to the film surface and the b- and c-axes parallel to the substrate, with no evidence of any other orientation. In addition, resistivity measurements showed that the onset transition temperature (Tconset) was approximately 116 K, the zero-resistance critical temperature (Tc0) was around 53 K, and the irreversible field (Hirr) was about 9 T at 37 K for (Cu,C)Ba2Ca3Cu4Oy films under optimal temperature. This is the first example of the successful growth of superconducting (Cu,C)Ba2Ca3Cu4Oy films on SrLaAlO4(00l) substrates. This will facilitate high-performance applications of (Cu,C)Ba2Ca3Cu4Oy superconducting materials in the liquid nitrogen temperature field.

Abstract:(Cu,C)Ba2Ca3Cu4O11+y is a nontoxic cuprate system with a superconducting transition temperature (T-c) of about 117 K for bulk samples. Recently, it is found that the bulk samples of this material synthesized under high pressure hold the highest irreversibility line among all the superconductors, which is very promising for the application in the liquid nitrogen temperature region. In this paper, we report successful growth of a-axis oriented (Cu,C)Ba2Ca3Cu4O11+y films by pulsed laser deposition method on LaAlO3 (001) substrates. The maximum zero-resistance T-c obtained in our work is as high as 96 K which is 18 K higher than the T-c reported previously in this system. The magnetization and resistivity measurements reveal that the superconducting properties of the films are significantly improved. These newly observed properties enhance the prospect of potential applications of this material.

Abstract:The oxidation state of Cu in HgBa2Can−1CunO2n + 2 + δ (n = 1−5) phases has been analyzed in terms of the bond valence sums. The totally mobile hole concentration (nH,t) of type-I CuO2 planes at the optimal level increases with the increasing number of CuO2 layers (n) per unit cell from 1 to 3, and the largest nH,t is observed to be 0.350 when n = 3, which just corresponds to the highest Tc in the Hg-based series. Thus the relationship between the maximum Tc for each member and the number n is similar to the correlation between the nH,t and the n.

Abstract:After a brief introduction of the Nernst effect in normal metal, it is pointed out that Nernst effect produced by the vortex flow in the mixed state of type Ⅱ superconductors is much larger than that of normal charge carriers. The large Nernst effect due to the vortex flowing in the high-T_c superconducting La_(2-x)Sr_xCuO_4 (LSCO) single crystals remains observable from T_c to a higher temperature T~0. The variation of T_c and T~0 with x in Zn doped YBa_2(Cu_(1-x)Zn_x)_3O_(7-δ) thin films is also reported. The results strongly suggest that there are vortex-like excitations above T_c in high-T_c cuprates. The data are discussed in the frame of preformed Cooper pairing scenario.

Abstract:For cuprate superconductors, a high critical transition temperature ( T c ) can be realized in compounds containing multiple CuO 2 layers in the unit cell, while a high critical current density ( J c ) is rarely sustained above liquid nitrogen temperature. The CuBa 2 Ca 3 Cu 4 O 10+δ (Cu-1234) superconductors synthesized under high oxygen pressure incredibly exhibit high T c (~117 K) and high J c (>10 4 A/cm 2 , 100 K) values. Here, the “double high” traits of Cu-1234 were investigated with advanced scanning transmission electron microscopy. It was revealed that ordering vacancies and plate-like 90° microdomains induced efficient microstructure pinning centers that suppressed vortex flux flow and enhanced J c . Furthermore, metallic charge-reservoir blocks [Ba 2 CuO 3+δ ] were composed of unique compressed [CuO 6 ] octahedra, which induced many holes with 2 p z symmetry that significantly decreased the superconducting anisotropy and dramatically enhanced the interlayer coupling that guaranteed a high J c . On the other hand, optimally doped CuO 2 planes inside the thick superconducting blocks [Ca 3 Cu 4 O 8 ] maintained a high T c . Our results are applicable to design and synthesis of new superconductors with “double high” traits.

Abstract:High superconducting transition temperature is favorable for the applications of superconductors. Some cuprate superconductors have the transition temperatures above 100 K, such as the Hg- or Tl-based 1223 and 1234 phases, but many of them contain the toxic elements, like Hg and Tl. Meanwhile, the anisotropy of upper critical field or the effective mass of above mentioned Hg-, Tl-based systems, or the non-toxic Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10 with T-c = 110 K is high, which makes the vortices easy to move and the irreversibility magnetic field is very low in the liquid nitrogen temperature region. Here we report the successful synthesis of the c-axis oriented (Cu,C)Ba2Ca2Cu3O9 +/-delta superconducting thin film with the zero-resistance transition temperature reaching 99.7 K. The superconducting transitions are rather sharp as revealed by both resistivity and magnetization measurements. Temperature dependent resistivity has been measured under different magnetic fields, and the irreversibility lines have been achieved. The resistivity was also measured with the magnetic field rotated in the ac-plane, and the data can be nicely scaled by using the anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau model, yielding a temperature dependent anisotropy which varies from 17 at 110 K to 4 at 77 K. Additionally, the critical current density calculated from the magnetization-hysteresis-loops reaches about 6x10(5) A/cm(2) (zero field) at 77 K. Thus the film may be a good candidate for the applications of superconducting cables or high frequency superconducting filters in liquid nitrogen temperature region.

Abstract:A new lead cuprate superconductor, (Pb0.5Ba0.5)Sr-2(Y0.5Ca0.5)Cu2Oy, With T-c(onset)=62 K and T-c(zero)=31 K, has been prepared. Barium ions occupy the part sites of the lead in the unit cell. The crystal parameters of this superconductor are a=3.82 Angstrom, c=11.93 Angstrom. For one of the samples, an anomalous drop of resistance was observed around 230 K, but it disappeared after 4 thermocycles.

Abstract:The copper oxides present the highest superconducting temperature and properties at odds with other compounds, suggestive of a fundamentally different superconductivity.In particular, the Abrikosov vortices fail to exhibit localized states expected and observed in all clean superconductors.We have explored the possibility that the elusive vortex-core signatures are actually present but weak.Combining local tunneling measurements with large-scale theoretical modeling, we positively identify the vortex states in YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7-δ .We explain their spectrum and the observed variations thereof from one vortex to the next by considering the effects of nearby vortices and disorder in the vortex lattice.We argue that the superconductivity of copper oxides is conventional, but the spectroscopic signature does not look so because the superconducting carriers are a minority.
Discovery of a new nontoxic cuprate superconducting system Ga-Ba-Ca-Cu-O

Abstract:Superconductivity is observed in a new nontoxic cuprate system Ga-Ba-Ca-Cu-O, with Tc = 82K for GaBa2Ca5Cu6O14+{\delta} (Ga-1256) and Tc = 116K probably for GaBa2Ca3Cu4O10+{\delta} (Ga-1234) or GaBa2Ca2Cu3O8+{\delta} (Ga-1223), respectively. All compounds are fabricated by solid state reaction method under high pressure and high temperature. Samples are characterized by resistivity, magnetization and X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements. The temperature dependence of magnetization measured in both zero-field-cooled and field-cooled processes on one sample (S1) shows two superconducting transitions at about 82K and 113K. The estimated shielding fraction for the phase with Tc of 82K is about 67%, while the fraction for another phase with Tc of 113K is quite small. The XRD Rietveld refinement for S1 indicates two main phases existing in the sample, Ga-1256 with fraction of about 58% and non-superconducting Ca0.85CuO2 with fraction of about 42%, respectively. Thus, we can conclude the superconducting phase with transition temperature of 82K is due to Ga-1256. The resistivity measurement also confirms the superconductivity for S1, and the resistivity reaches zero at about 82K. The temperature dependence of magnetization for another sample (S2) shows much higher superconducting shielding fraction for the phase with Tc of 116K, which may be a promising prospective for the synthesis of Ga-1234 or Ga-1223 phase.

Here wereport the scanning tunneling microscope measurements on the Hg-1223 singlecrystals with T_c = 134 K. The observed superconducting gaps determined fromthe tunneling spectra can be categorized into two groups: the smaller gapΔ_1 ranges from about 45 to 70 meV, while the larger gap Δ_2 fromabout 65 to 98 meV. The observed unprecedentedly large gap value gives astraightforward explanation to the highest T_c in the Hg-1223 system. Thelargest gap observed here is comparable to the magnetic superexchange energyand excludes any possibility of using phonon pictures to interpret thesuperconductivity. Interestingly, an extremely strong particle-hole asymmetryis observed in associating with a very robust coherence peak at the bias of thelarger gap in the hole branch of the Bogoliubov dispersion. We propose that theobserved asymmetry results from the interplay of a flat band (van Hovesingularity) in the electronic spectrum and the large superconducting gap inthe underdoped layer. This could be the main reason for the strong pairing, andsignificant enhancement of the density of states in the hole branch of theBogoliubov band yielding strong phase coherence of Cooper pairs. Abstract:We report on scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy studies of the slightly underdoped cuprate superconductor HgBa2Ca2Cu3O8+delta, which has an onset Tc approximate to 120 K. Disordered HgO-terminated surfaces were observed after sample cleaving in ultrahigh vacuum, revealing spatially inhomogeneous energy gaps with a low-lying V-shaped structure and the ubiquitous mode features. Similar to Bi-family cuprate superconductors, vortex cores were identified by the suppression of superconducting coherence peaks and the emergence of in -gap features. Superconductivity near step edges is also strongly suppressed over several coherence lengths, forming an effective interface to the superconducting region, where the local spectra show a weak zero -bias conductance peak arising from the Andreev bound states. These results are expected from the widely believed d -wave nature in cuprates, demonstrating a platform for studying unconventional superconductivity.

Abstract:Abstract Copper oxide superconductors continue to fascinate the communities of condensed matter physics and material sciences because they host the highest ambient-pressure superconducting transition temperature and unconventional electronic behaviour that are not fully explained 1–3 . Searching for universal links between the superconducting state and its normal metallic state is believed to be an effective approach to elucidate the underlying mechanism of superconductivity. One of the common expectations for copper oxide superconductors is that a metallic phase will appear after the superconductivity is entirely suppressed by chemical doping 4–8 or the application of a magnetic field 9 . Here we report the first observation of a quantum phase transition from a superconducting state to an insulating-like state as a function of pressure in Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+ δ (Bi2212) superconductors with two CuO 2 planes in a unit cell for doping below, at and above a level that achieves the highest transition temperature. We also find the same phenomenon in related compounds with a single CuO 2 plane as well as three CuO 2 planes in a unit cell. This apparently universal phenomenon poses a challenge for achieving a unified understanding of the mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity.

Abstract:A recently discovered 73-K cuprate superconductor Ba(2)CuO(4-delta )implies that intact CuO2 planes are not absolutely necessary in achieving high-T-c superconductivity. Featuring an exceptional Jahn-Teller distortion, wherein the CuO6 octahedrons are compressed along the c axis, O vacancies in this material prefer to reside in the CuO2 plane, which significantly modifies the two-dimensional (2D) square lattice. By combining first-principles total-energy calculation with the automated structure inversion method, the effective cluster interactions of O vacancies are mapped out. Around delta = 0.8, where the superconductivity was observed experimentally, we predict that the O vacancies form a long-range order, which slice the CuO2 plane into 1D chains and two-leg ladders. The latter was not known to exist in other cuprates. A Monte Carlo simulation is performed based on the effective cluster interaction model, showing that such an ordering pattern is stable up to 900 K. Our results put forth a concrete structural basis to discuss the underlying superconducting mechanism.
Electronic Structure, Irreversibility Line and Magnetoresistance of Cu0.3bi2se3 Superconductor

Abstract:CuxBi2Se3 is a superconductor that is a potential candidate for topological superconductors. We report our laser-based angle-resolved photoemission measurement on the electronic structure of the CuxBi2Se3 superconductor, and a detailed magneto-resistance measurement in both normal and superconducting states. We find that the topological surface state of the pristine Bi2Se3 topological insulator remains robust after the Cu-intercalation, while the Dirac cone location moves downward due to electron doping. Detailed measurements on the magnetic field-dependence of the resistance in the superconducting state establishes an irreversibility line and gives a value of the upper critical field at zero temperature of ~4000 Oe for the Cu0.3Bi2Se3 superconductor with a middle point Tc of 1.9K. The relation between the upper critical field Hc2 and temperature T is different from the usual scaling relation found in cuprates and in other kinds of superconductors. Small positive magneto-resistance is observed in Cu0.3Bi2Se3 superconductors up to room temperature. These observations provide useful information for further study of this possible candidate for topological superconductors.
Electronic structure and two-band superconductivity in unconventional high-$T_c$ cuprates Ba$_2$CuO$_{3+δ}$

Abstract:The recently discovered cuprate superconductor Ba$_2$CuO$_{3+\delta}$ exhibits a high $T_c\simeq73$K at $\delta\simeq0.2$. The polycrystal grown under high pressure has a structure similar to La$_2$CuO$_4$, but with dramatically different lattice parameters due to the CuO$_6$ octahedron compression. The crystal field in the compressed Ba$_2$CuO$_4$ leads to an inverted Cu $3d$ $e_g$ complex with the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbital sitting below the $d_{3z^2-r^2}$ and an electronic structure highly unusual compared to the conventional cuprates. We construct a two-orbital Hubbard model for the Cu $d^9$ state at hole doping $x=2\delta$ and study the orbital-dependent strong correlation and superconductivity. For the undoped case at $x=0$, we found that strong correlation drives an orbital-polarized Mott insulating state with the spin-$1/2$ moment of the localized $d_{3z^2-r^2}$ orbital. In contrast to the single-band cuprates where superconductivity is suppressed in the overdoped regime, hole doping the two-orbital Mott insulator leads to orbital-dependent correlations and the robust spin and orbital exchange interactions produce a high-$T_c$ antiphase $d$-wave superconductor even in the heavily doped regime at $x=0.4$. We conjecture that Ba$_2$CuO$_{3+\delta}$ realizes mixtures of such heavily hole-doped superconducting Ba$_2$CuO$_4$ and disordered Ba$_2$CuO$_{3}$ chains in a single-layer or predominately separated bilayer structure. Our findings suggest that unconventional cuprates with liberated orbitals as doped two-band Mott insulators can be a direction for realizing high-T$_c$ superconductivity with enhanced transition temperature $T_c$.
