Abstract:Purpose: To explore the feasibility of discriminating pancreatic cancer from normal pancreas using texture features of non-enhanced computed tomography (CT) images. Methods: 312 patients were retrospectively analyzed, including 153 cases of pancreatic cancer and 159 cases of normal pancreas. Texture analysis methods, including statistical methods and wavelet transform, were used to extract texture features of non-enhanced CT images. A combination mode, which used the wavelet transform and statistical method, was proposed. Five texture analysis methods were applied: gray-level histogram (GLH), gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM), wavelet transform (WT), wavelet transform combined with histogram (WTH), and wavelet transform combined with co-occurrence matrix (WTCM). The WTH and WTCM used the proposed combination mode. Then, feature selection was performed using the method based on mutual intrmation. Next, two classifiers are applied: support vector machine (SVM) and probabilistic neural network (PNN). The performances were evaluated in these two classifiers separately. Results: In SVM: it showed that using the WTH method, achieved the highest accuracy and the highest sensitivity, which were 95.48% and 96.05%, respectively; it also demonstrated that using the WTCM method achieved the highest specificity, which was 97.47%. In PNN: it showed that using the WTH method, achieved the highest accuracy, the highest sensitivity, and the highest specificity, which were 96.13%, 96.05%, and 96.20%, respectively. Both in SVM and in PNN, using the WTH method achieved the best performance. Conclusions: It indicates that using the developed texture analysis methods to classify pancreatic cancer and normal pancreas is feasible. In addition, the texture analysis methods using the proposed combination mode (WTH and WTCM) are more effective than the other methods (GLH, GLCM, and WT).
