Abstract:Photocatalytic water splitting using semiconductor photocatalysts is a promising approach for the production of carbon-neutral, sustainable and clean hydrogen fuel. However, the separation and transport of photoinduced carriers are generally considered to be rate-limiting steps, and their low efficiency remains a major challenge. Therefore, much effort has been devoted to developing new strategies in surface/interface engineering of photocatalysts to improve the dynamics of charge separation/transport. This feature article briefly summarizes recent advances in photocatalyst surface/interface engineering by our research group, which have been achieved through the design of various novel photocatalysts, including interfacial modulation, heterostructure construction, heteroatom doping, single atom and diatom sites. The article is divided into three parts: first, we briefly introduce the three key processes involved in solar water splitting and reveal relationships between the properties of nanostructural photocatalysts and the fundamentals of water splitting; second, we detail methods and strategies for surface and interfacial structures to improve the efficiency of the fundamental processes, especially charge separation; finally, we explore prospects for photocatalytic water splitting applications. This article provides a valuable resource and strategies for researchers currently working in the field of photocatalytic water splitting.

Abstract:Surfaces and interfaces are two key parameters to maneuver the performance of photocatalytic materials, particularly for hybrid structures, in various reaction systems. In this Focus Review, we highlight the recent progress on surface and interface engineering toward designing highly efficient photocatalysts, and elucidate the fundamental principles behind the designs. We first introduce the roles of surfaces and interfaces in different models of charge kinetics-a key process determining the quantum efficiency of photocatalysis-followed by the definitions of surface and inter-face in basic photocatalytic architectural structures. We then outline the design rules and important parameters for surface and interface engineering, respectively. As an interplay effect, the relationships between surface and interface parameters in photocatalyst design are also presented. We further summarize the synthetic methods for surface and interface control. Finally, we discuss the challenges and opportunities for photocatalysis research in terms of surface and interface engineering.

Abstract:Surface and interface designs are an efficient strategy to fabricate innovative and advanced catalysts. A prerequisite for this is a fundamental understanding of the structure-performance relations of catalyst nanoparticles, which, however, remains a formidable challenge due to the complexity of heterogeneous catalysis. Recent progresses in catalytic nanocrystals with uniform and well-defined structures, in situ characterization techniques, and theoretical calculations have offered opportunities for the fundamental studies of heterogeneous catalysis, and the achieved outputs are turning the innovation of efficient catalysts via surface and interface designs into a reality. Herein, the recent advances in the fundamental-understanding-directed rational surface and interface designs for heterogeneous catalysis, including crystal phase design, morphology/facet design, and size design, are presented. Perspectives are also discussed for the innovation of efficient catalysts via the fundamental-understanding-directed surface and interface designs followed by controlled synthesis.

Abstract:Recently, Cu2O has been considered as an attractive material for solar water splitting due to its excellent characteristics such as small bandgap, visible light adsorption, abundance, and nontoxicity. The theoretical solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency (STH) of Cu2O is 18% for water splitting. To date, the value experimentally obtained by previous works has not attained and overcomed above ideal value, because of the lack of Cu2O in photocathode to absorb sunlight efficiently, the short diffusion length of minority cariers, and the Cu2O photocorrosion during water splitting. 3D nanostructures for water splitting and surface modification contribute to resolving these issues. Nanostructures can improve STH owing to high surface-to-volume ratio and short diffusion length for carrier transport compared with bulk materials. In addition, surface modification enables to promote the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pair and to protect the photoelectrode against photocorrosion, and thus resulting in the enhancement of stability in Cu2O photocathode. The present study aimed to improve STH and stability in Cu2O photocathode for water splitting by optimizing morphology of Cu2O nanostructures and surface modification. In order to determine the suitable conditions for water splitting, the relationship between the morphology of the structure and STH was examined. The photocathode with Cu2O nanostructures exhibited maximum photocurrent density of 4.58 mA/cm2 at a potential of 0 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) and STH of 5.63%. Besides, surface modification was successfully introduced by covering nanostructures with homogeneous and conformal layers formed by atomic layer deposition (ALD).

Abstract:Currently, problems associated with energy and environment have become increasingly serious. Producing hydrogen, a clean and renewable resource, through photocatalytic water splitting using solar energy is a feasible and efficient route for resolving these problems, and great efforts have been devoted to improve the solar-to-hydrogen efficiency. Light harvesting and electron-hole separation are key in enhancing the efficiency of solar energy utilization, which stimulates the development of new photocatalytic materials. Here, recent advances in material design for photocatalytic water splitting are presented from a theoretical perspective. Specifically, aiming to enhance the photocatalytic performance, general strategies of materials design are discussed, including codoping and introducing a built-in electric field to improve the light harvesting of materials, reducing the dimension of materials to shorten the migration pathway of carriers to inhibit electron-hole recombination, and constructing heterojunctions to enhance light harvesting and electron-hole separation. Future opportunities and challenges in the theoretical design of photocatalytic materials toward water splitting are also included.

Abstract:Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting can convert solar energy into clean and renewable hydrogen energy, showing a promising application prospect. However, large‐scale implementation of PEC water splitting is now hampered by insufficient solar‐to‐hydrogen conversion efficiency, which requires the development of high‐performance photoelectrodes. Key processes that determine the water splitting performance of photoelectrodes are the light absorption, separation, and transport efficiency of photogenerated electrons and holes and the surface reaction of water oxidation/reduction. Concerning these three key processes, various material design and surface/interface engineering strategies have been explored to improve the performance of photoelectrodes. Herein, these strategies for photoelectrode optimization of the past decades are summarized and discussed in terms of micro‐ and nanostructuring, heterojunction construction, element doping, surface passivation, plasmonic metal coating, and electrocatalyst modification. Special attention is given to how these strategies play their roles in improving the performance of photoelectrodes, based on which it is hoped light is shed on the design principles and modification routes for high‐performance photoelectrodes. Material design and surface/interface engineering strategies for optimizing the performance of photoelectrodes are summarized, by considering the recombination paths of charge carriers during photoelectrochemical water splitting. These strategies for photoelectrodes are classified into six parts, including micro‐ and nanostructuring, heterojunction construction, element doping, surface passivation, plasmonic metal coating, and electrocatalyst modification.

Abstract:Electrochemical water splitting is regarded as the most attractive technique to store renewable electricity in the form of hydrogen fuel. However, the corresponding anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) remain challenging, which exhibit complex reactions and sluggish kinetic behaviors at the triple-phase interface. Material surface and interface engineering provide a feasible approach to improve catalytic activity. Besides, self-supported electrocatalysts have been proven to be highly efficient toward water splitting, because of the regulated catalyst/substrate interface. In this Review, the state-of-the-art achievements in self-supported electrocatalyst for HER/OER have demonstrated the feasibility of surface and interface engineering strategies to boost performance. The six key effective surface/interface engineering approaches for rational catalysts design are systematically reviewed, including defect engineering, morphology engineering, crystallographic tailoring, heterostructure design, catalyst/substrate interface engineering, and catalyst/electrolyte interface regulation. Finally, the challenges and opportunities on the valuable directions are proposed to inspire future investigation of highly active and durable HER/OER electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Benefitting from their unique structure and physicochemical properties, two-dimensional (2D) materials have aroused tremendous interest from academia and industry, being regarded as an important class of photocatalysts. However, their photocatalytic activities still need further improvement to satisfy the requirement of scale-up production. In this regard, the surface engineering strategy is considered as one of the most effective methods for optimizing their photocatalytic performance. This feature article not only classifies the 2D photocatalysts into layered and non-layered 2D photocatalysts and presents their preferred synthesis methods, but also summarizes the advantages of the surface engineering strategy for boosting the photocatalytic performance of 2D materials from the aspects of light absorption, charge carrier separation and surface active sites. Various surface engineering strategies, such as surface decorating, vacancy engineering, element doping, surface heterojunction construction and regulation of facet-dependent sites, have also been presented as advantages of the surface engineering strategy. Eventually, the challenges and future outlook for optimizing the photocatalytic activities of 2D materials through surface engineering are addressed.
Interfacial Design to Enhance Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution via Optimizing Energy and Mass Flows

Abstract:Energy and mass transfer in photocatalytic systems plays a significant role in photocatalytic water splitting, but relevant research has long been ignored. Here, an interfacial photocatalytic mode for photocatalytic hydrogen production is exploited to optimize the energy and mass flows and mainly includes a heat-insulating layer, a water-channel layer, and a photothermal photocatalytic layer. In this mode, the energy flow is optimized for efficient spreading, conversion, and utilization. A low-loss path (ultrathin water film) and an efficient heat localized zone are constructed, where light energy, especially infrared-light energy, can transfer to the target functional membrane surface with low loss and the thermal energy converted from light can be localized for further use. Meanwhile, the optimization of the mass flow is achieved by improving the desorption capacity of the products. The generated hydrogen bubbles can rapidly leave from the surface of the photocatalyst, along with the active sites being released timely. Consequently, the photocatalytic hydrogen production rate can be increased up to about 6.6 times that in a conventional photocatalytic mode. Nanoscale hetero-interfaces for electrocatalytic and photocatalytic water splitting

Abstract:As green and sustainable methods to produce hydrogen energy, photocatalytic and electrochemical water splitting have been widely studied. In order to find efficient photocatalysts and electrocatalysts, materials with various composition, size, and surface/interface are investigated. In recent years, constructing suitable nanoscale hetero-interfaces can not only overcome the disadvantages of the single-phase material, but also possibly provide new functionalities. In this review, we systematically introduce the fundamental understanding and experimental progress in nanoscale hetero-interface engineering to design and fabricate photocatalytic and electrocatalytic materials for water splitting. The basic principles of photo-/electro-catalytic water splitting and the fundamentals of nanoscale hetero-interfaces are briefly introduced. The intrinsic behaviors of nanoscale hetero-interfaces on electrocatalysts and photocatalysts are summarized, which are the electronic structure modulation, space charge separation, charge/electron/mass transfer, support effect, defect effect, and synergistic effect. By highlighting the main characteristics of hetero-interfaces, the main roles of hetero-interfaces for electrocatalytic and photocatalytic water splitting are discussed, including excellent electronic structure, efficient charge separation, lower reaction energy barriers, faster charge/electron/mass transfer, more active sites, higher conductivity, and higher stability on hetero-interfaces. Following above analysis, the developments of electrocatalysts and photocatalysts with hetero-structures are systematically reviewed.

Abstract:The electrochemical water splitting to produce hydrogen converts electric energy into clean hydrogen energy, which is a groundbreaking concept of energy optimization. To achieve high efficiency, numerous strategies have been developed to enhance the performance of electrocatalysts. Among these, interface engineering with molecules/ions/groups, serves as a versatile approach for optimizing the performance of electrocatalysts in water splitting. On the basis of numerous achievements in high-performance electrocatalysts engineered through molecules/ions/groups at interface, a comprehensive understanding of these advancements is crucial for guiding future progress. Herein, after providing a concise overview of the background, the interface engineering via molecules/ions/groups for electrocatalytic water splitting is demonstrated from three perspectives. Firstly, the engineering of electronic state of electrocatalysts by molecules/ions/groups at interface to reduce the Gibbs free energy of the corresponding reactions. Secondly, the modification of local microenvironment surrounding electrocatalysts via molecules/ions/groups at interface to enhance the transfer of reactants and products. Thirdly, the protection of electrocatalysts with molecule/ion/group fences improves their durability, including protecting active sites from leaching and defending them against harmful species. The fundamental principles of these three aspects are outlined for each, along with pertinent comments. Finally, several research directions and challenges are proposed.

Abstract:The photocatalyst surface is central to photocatalytic reactions. However, it has been a challenge to explicitly understand both the surface configuration and the structure-dependent photocatalytic properties at the atomic level. First-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations provide a versatile method that makes up for the lack of experimental surface studies. In DFT calculations, the initial surface model greatly affects the accuracy of the calculation results. Consequently, establishing a more realistic and more reliable material surface models is undoubtedly the first step and the most important link in theoretical calculations. The aim of this Perspective is to provide a general understanding of the methods for the surface modeling of photocatalytic materials in recent years. We begin with a discussion of the basic theories applied in photocatalytic surface research, followed by an explanation of the importance of surface modeling in photocatalysis. We then elaborate on the advantages and disadvantages of the basic surface model and briefly describe the latest surface modeling methods. Finally, we evaluate the rationality of current surface modeling methods. We summarize this Perspective by prospecting the developing directions of photocatalytic surface research in the future. It is believed that a reasonable surface model should be verified by both experimental characterization and theoretical computation with negative feedback.

Abstract:TiO2 has been intensively investigated for decades as the most important photocatalyst, but its photoactivity still needs further improvment. TiO2 surface and interface are vital in photocatalysis because it is where the photo-excitation, charge transfer and subsequent photoreaction take place. Surface and interface control has been demonstrated as very effective approach to synthesize highly efficient TiO2. Here we highlight our recent work as well as the state-of-the-art in controlling of TiO2 surface and interface including facet growth, surface decoration and surface adsorption that leads to better photocatalytic performance. It is expected to provide some guidelines for rational design and fabrication of highly efficient TiO2-based materials for photocatalysis.

Abstract:Novel air-water interface photocatalysts are prepared by deposition of multiple layers and hydrophobic surface modification on TiO2 nanoparticles. Without any support, the photocatalysts float at the air-water interface where they self-assemble to form a catalyst layer for photocatalytic decomposition. This unique catalyst design exhibits high photoactivity, excellent photostability, easy separability and recyclable recyclability, which is attractive from an industrial perspective in water treatment.

Abstract:Two‐dimensional (2D) semiconductors with unique structures and surface physicochemical characteristics have been extensively employed for efficient photocatalysis. Recently, surface coordination activation interactions have obtained attention in promoting photocatalytic efficiency as they establish bridges between reactants and photocatalysts. Accordingly, a burgeoning trend in the design of 2D photocatalysts is regulating the surface active centers for coordinating with reactants. These attempts have developed various effective strategies to optimize the 2D photocatalysts and provide in‐depth insights into the structure‐function relationship for heterogeneous photocatalysis. Herein, we summarize recent advances in surface engineering in designing efficient 2D photocatalysts, focusing on coordination activation. We emphasize the advantages of coordination activation as a versatile medium for engineering the surface of photocatalysts. In particular, the discussion includes various strategies for surface engineering and the structure‐function relationship in photocatalysis. This work systematically concludes the significance and future challenges of coordination activation in the surface functionalization of 2D photocatalysis, shedding light on the design of next‐generation photocatalysts.

Abstract:Hydrogen production from water via photocatalytic water splitting has attracted great interest due to the increasing challenge from energy and environment. The light harvest, electron–hole separation, and catalytic activity are keys to enhance the efficiency of solar energy utilization, which stimulates the development of high-performance photocatalysts. In recent years, two-dimensional (2D) materials have attracted much attention due to their extremely large specific surface area, shortened carrier migration path, and excellent optical properties, but it is still a challenge to realize overall water splitting under visible light with 2D material photocatalysts experimentally. Density functional theory-based first-principles calculations provide a quicker and lower cost approach in material design than experimental exploration. In this review, recent advances in design of 2D material photocatalysts, including metal-containing, metal-free, and heterojunction materials, for photocatalytic water splitting are presented from a theoretical perspective. Future opportunities and challenges in theoretical design of 2D material photocatalysts toward overall water splitting are also included.

Abstract:(Photo-)electrocatalytic artificial photosynthesis driven by electrical and/or solar energy that converts water (H2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2) into hydrogen (H2), carbohydrates and oxygen (O2), has proven to be a promising and effective route for producing clean alternatives to fossil fuels, as well as for storing intermittent renewable energy, and thus to solve the energy crisis and climate change issues that we are facing today. Basic (photo-)electrocatalysis consists of three main processes: (1) light absorption, (2) the separation and transport of photogenerated charge carriers, and (3) the transfer of photogenerated charge carriers at the interfaces. With further research, scientists have found that these three steps are significantly affected by surface and interface properties (e.g., defect, dangling bonds, adsorption/desorption, surface recombination, electric double layer (EDL), surface dipole). Therefore, the catalytic performance, which to a great extent is determined by the physicochemical properties of surfaces and interfaces between catalyst and reactant, can be changed dramatically under working conditions. Common approaches for investigating these phenomena include X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), scanning probe microscopy (SPM), wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXRD), auger electron spectroscopy (AES), transmission electron microscope (TEM), etc. Generally, these techniques can only be applied under ex situ conditions and cannot fully recover the changes of catalysts in real chemical reactions. How to identify and track alterations of the catalysts, and thus provide further insight into the complex mechanisms behind them, has become a major research topic in this field. The application of in situ/operando characterization techniques enables real-time monitoring and analysis of dynamic changes. Therefore, researchers can obtain physical and/or chemical information during the reaction (e.g., morphology, chemical bonding, valence state, photocurrent distribution, surface potential variation, surface reconstruction), or even by the combination of these techniques as a suite (e.g., atomic force microscopy-based infrared spectroscopy (AFM-IR), or near-ambient-pressure STM/XPS combined system (NAP STM-XPS)) to correlate the various properties simultaneously, so as to further reveal the reaction mechanisms. In this review, we briefly describe the working principles of in situ/operando surface/interface characterization technologies (i.e., SPM and X-ray spectroscopy) and discuss the recent progress in monitoring relevant surface/interface changes during water splitting and CO2 reduction reactions (CO2RR). We hope that this review will provide our readers with some ideas and guidance about how these in situ/operando characterization techniques can help us investigate the changes in catalyst surfaces/interfaces, and further promote the development of (photo-)electrocatalytic surface and interface engineering.

Abstract:The interface, referred to as the boundary between two phases, has been demonstrated to play a critical role in catalysis. Fundamental understanding of interfacial phenomena occurring in catalysis will favor the rational design of high-performance catalysts. With the thriving of nanoscience, the nanointerface has also received tremendous attention in nanocatalysis. In this review, we focus on the recent advances in the delicate design and the fine control of various complex nanomaterials with well-defined interfaces based on progress in nano-synthetic methodologies, including metal-metal oxide, metal-metal, metal-non-oxide and metal in confined spaces. Then the challenging issues in the synthetic control of a nanointerface, based on the authors' experiences, are discussed. Finally, the prospects and outlooks for engineering nanointerfaces for nanocatalysis towards renewable energy are presented.
