Abstract:Electrocatalytic CO2 reduction to formate is considered as a perfect route for efficient conversion of the greenhouse gas CO2 to value-added chemicals. However, it still remains a huge challenge to design a catalyst with both high catalytic activity and selectivity for target products. Here we report a unique Sn-doped Bi2O3 nanosheet (NS) electrocatalyst with different atomic percentages of Sn (1.2, 2.5, and 3.8%) prepared by a simple solvothermal method for highly efficient electrochemical reduction of CO2 to formate. Of them, the 2.5% Sn-doped Bi2O3 NSs exhibited the highest faradaic efficiency (FE) of 93.4% with a current density of 24.3 mA cm-2 for formate at -0.97 V in the H-cell and a maximum current density of nearly 50 mA cm-2 was achieved at -1.27 V. The formate FE is stable maintained at over 90% in a wide potential range from -0.87 V to -1.17 V. Electrochemical and density functional theory (DFT) analyses of undoped and Sn doped Bi2O3 NSs indicated that the strong synergistic effect between Sn and Bi is responsible for the enhancement in the adsorption capacity of the OCHO* intermediate, and thus the activity for formate production. In addition, we coupled 2.5% Sn-doped Bi2O3 NSs with a dimensionally stable anode (DSA) to realize battery-driven highly active CO2RR and OER with decent activity and efficiency.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction powered by renewable electricity has been considered as a promising approach for sustainable energy storage and chemicals production. Herein, ultrathin few-layer SnO 2 nanosheets exposed with (001) facets were synthesized and exhibited a rather broad potential window (0.8 V) for selective CO 2 conversion to formate. Both DFT calculations and operando spectroscopic characterizations were carried out to identify key intermediate *OCHO. Systematically tailoring microenvironment in the catalyst layer of gas diffusion electrode (GDE) indicate that both flexible Nafion and solid polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) nanoparticles are essential to create abundant and robust triple-phase boundaries (TPB) with more active sites, where CO 2 and H 2 O meet at nanosheet surface to output a high formate partial current density of 380 mA·cm -2 with the selectivity of 88.4%. Moreover, such novel Nafion/PTFE/SnO 2 TPB porous structures above largely enhance the single-pass carbon efficiency up to 29.3% in 1 M KOH. This study implies that engineering TPB active sites is an effective approach to the design of advanced CO 2 electrolyzers.

Abstract:Abstract SnO2-based materials are promising catalysts for CO2 electrochemical reduction due to its attractive selectivity for C1 products (formate and carbon monoxide) but they tend to suffer high overpotential and poor stability. Here, a porous SnO2/ZnO catalyst is synthesized via hydroxides coprecipitation, hydrothermal treatment and carbon black template calcination. SnO2 nanocrystals are produced by calcination of tin hydroxides while the growth of ZnO nanocrystals is associated with carbon black template. The porous SnO2/ZnO catalyst presents a stable Faradaic efficiency of >90% for CO2 reduction at an applied voltage of -0.7 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) and a C1 current density of 9.53 mA cm−2 over a testing period of 100 h. The improved performance is originated from abundant heterojunctions and lattice defects of SnO2 and ZnO nanocrystals, large specific surface area and grain boundary. This study provides a facile method to fabricate porous and nanocrystal metal oxides electrocatalysts for electrochemical processes.

Stannate derived bimetallic nanoparticles for electrocatalytic CO2 reduction

Abstract:The synthesis of 8 metal-Sn (metal = Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ag, Cd, and Pb) bimetallic materials by electrochemical reduction of their metal stannates is reported. When the metal-Sn bimetallic materials were used as electrocatalysts for electrochemical CO2 reduction, bulk electrolysis results revealed that the Ag-Sn and Cu-Sn bimetallic systems showed the highest activity and selectivity for formate. When incorporated with reduced graphene oxide (rGO), their electrocatalytic performance can be further improved, making them among the best performing tin based CO2 reduction electrocatalysts reported so far. The Ag-Sn/rGO catalyst reaches the highest faradaic efficiency for formate (FEformate) of 88.3% at -0.94 V vs. RHE with a current density of 21.3 mA cm(-2) in a 0.5 M aqueous NaHCO3 solution. Comparable performance was observed from the Cu-Sn/rGO catalyst, where the highest FEformate of 87.4% and a current density of 23.6 mA cm(-2) were obtained at -0.99 V vs. RHE. Both catalysts exhibited high stability over a 6 hour electrolysis period with the FEformate variation being less than 2%. The excellent performance of this class of bimetallic nanoparticle/rGO composite catalysts is attributed to the small size of the stannate derived bimetallic nanoparticles, the presence of a SnOx layer and the introduction of rGO which prevents the aggregation of the bimetallic nanoparticles and provides a 3D conductive network to facilitate fast charge transfer. This study demonstrates a facile yet general strategy that enables the synthesis of bimetallic systems for highly efficient electrocatalytic CO2 reduction.

Abstract:Herein, three-dimensional ordered macro-/mesoporous (3DOM/m) SnO2 catalysts are synthesized at different calcination temperatures. The optimized catalyst 3DOM/m SnO2-450 shows excellent electrocatalytic perfor-mance in CO2-saturated 0.5 M KHCO3 electrolyte with a current density of -25.5 mA cm-2 at -1.2 V (vs. RHE) and the maximum Faradaic efficiency of formate of 83 % at -1.0 V (vs. RHE). The ordered interconnected macro-/mesoporous structure of the 3DOM/m SnO2 promotes the mass/charge transfer across the electrode, and the mesoporous structure enables the catalyst to have more accessible reactive active sites, thus improving the catalytic selectivity and activity. This work not only offers an efficient porous tin-based catalyst for formate generation, but also provides a promising strategy for the design and fabrication of robust electrocatalysts for the electrocatalytic CO2 reduction in the future.
Pd-Doped Tin Oxide Nanostructured Catalysts for Electrochemical Reduction of Carbon Dioxide

Abstract:Electrocatalytic reduction of CO 2 can convert CO 2 into a variety of carbon-based fuels and achieve carbon neutrality. Tin oxide (SnO 2 ) electrocatalytic materials have the advantages of low cost and low toxicity, and the electrocatalytic reduction of CO 2 to formic acid is highly selective. In this paper, Pd-doped SnO 2 nanoparticle materials were synthesized by flame spray pyrolysis and their properties for electrocatalytic reduction of CO 2 to formic acid were explored in a gas diffusion electrolytic cell. The results showed that the Pd/SnO 2 catalysts could improve the catalytic activity for the conversion of CO 2 to formate, and the most superior 0.5 Pd/SnO 2 showed a Faraday efficiency of 63% for formate at − 1.20 V vs. RHE and a current density of 90.59 mAcm −2 , which were 1.4 and 2.7 times higher than that of pure SnO 2 , respectively. The modified catalyst grains were refined, and the charge transfer resistance at the catalyst interface was reduced, and the electrochemically active area was increased, generating more catalytically active sites and increasing the contact between CO 2 , electrolyte, and electrode-catalyst. Density functional theory calculations showed that the doping of Pd element changed the local structure of SnO 2 , and the Pd/SnO 2 surface was more favorable for the generation of the intermediate products * HCOO − and formate as well as the inhibition of hydrogen precipitation, which was consistent with the experimental results.

Ultrathin Tin Monosulfide Nanosheets with the Exposed (001) Plane for Efficient Electrocatalytic Conversion of CO2 into Formate

Abstract:Current Sn-based materials are ideal catalysts developed to drive the electrochemical conversion of CO2 to formate, but competing proton reduction to hydrogen is an ever-present drain on catalytic selectivity. Herein, we report a reliable electrochemical exfoliation route, with the assistance of alternating voltage, for large-scale preparation of two-dimensional (2D) ultrathin tin monosulfide nanosheets (SnS NSs), which feature a large lateral size of 1.0 mu m with a thickness of similar to 5.0 nm. Systematic electrochemical studies demonstrated that the achieved SnS NSs exhibited an outstanding electrocatalytic activity towards the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) to the formate product, as evidenced by a considerable faradaic efficiency (F.E.) of 82.1%, a high partial current density of 18.9 mA cm(-2) at -1.1 V, and a low Tafel slope of 180 mV dec(-1). Further, using an electrode prepared from the resulting SnS NSs by the particle transfer method, a remarkably high formate F.E. over 91% was achieved in a wide potential window. Such high performance renders the SnS NSs among the best reported tin sulfide-based CO2RR electrocatalysts. Theoretical calculations coupled with comprehensive experimental studies demonstrated that the synergistic effect between the ultrathin layered architecture and dominantly exposed (001) plane of SnS NSs accounted for the uniquely efficient catalytic activity for the CO2RR.

Abstract:Currently, the precise control of the architecture and surface of functional materials for high-performance still remains a great challenge. Here, a feasible approach is presented to synchronously manipulate mesoporous surface and dimensionality of SnO(2)catalysts into hierarchically mesoporous nanosheets and nanospheres within one simple reaction system. By adjustment of the hydrophobic chain length of different fluorinated surfactants, 0D SnO(2)nanospheres with average size of 165 nm, and 2D SnO(2)ulthrathin nanosheets with thickness of 22.5 nm with the distinct dimensionalities are separately obtained (one stone, two birds), both of which are well decorated with ordered mesopore arrays on their surfaces (pore size of 16 nm). The following calcination gave rise to the formation of hierarchically mesopores (5 and 16 nm, respectively) with high crystallization and improved surface area (96.8 m(2)g(-1)). The resultant mesoporous SnO(2)nanosheets as catalyst for CO(2)electroreduction reaction (CO2RR) exhibit excellent selectivity, with a high Faraday efficiency (FE) of HCOOH reaching up to 90.0% at -1.3 V andC(1)FE of 97.4% at -1.2 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode, as well as long-term stability, which is among the best performance compared to reported SnO(2)materials, thanks to the collective contributions of the unique architecture and mesoporous structure.
On the Mechanism of Carbon Dioxide Reduction on Sn-Based Electrodes: Insights into the Role of Oxide Surfaces

Abstract:The electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide into carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and formic acid has offered an interesting alternative for a sustainable energy scenario. In this context, Sn-based electrodes have attracted a great deal of attention because they present low price and toxicity, as well as high faradaic efficiency (FE) for formic acid (or formate) production at relatively low overpotentials. In this work, we investigate the role of tin oxide surfaces on Sn-based electrodes for carbon dioxide reduction into formate by means of experimental and theoretical methods. Cyclic voltammetry measurements of Sn-based electrodes, with different initial degree of oxidation, result in similar onset potentials for the CO2 reduction to formate, ca. −0.8 to −0.9 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), with faradaic efficiencies of about 90–92% at −1.25 V (vs. RHE). These results indicate that under in-situ conditions, the electrode surfaces might converge to very similar structures, with partially reduced or metastable Sn oxides, which serve as active sites for the CO2 reduction. The high faradaic efficiencies of the Sn electrodes brought by the etching/air exposition procedure is ascribed to the formation of a Sn oxide layer with optimized thickness, which is persistent under in situ conditions. Such oxide layer enables the CO2 “activation”, also favoring the electron transfer during the CO2 reduction reaction due to its better electric conductivity. In order to elucidate the reaction mechanism, we have performed density functional theory calculations on different slab models starting from the bulk SnO and Sn6O4(OH)4 compounds with focus on the formation of -OH groups at the water-oxide interface. We have found that the insertion of CO2 into the Sn-OH bond is thermodynamically favorable, leading to the stabilization of the tin-carbonate species, which is subsequently reduced to produce formic acid through a proton-coupled electron transfer process. The calculated potential for CO2 reduction (E = −1.09 V vs. RHE) displays good agreement with the experimental findings and, therefore, support the CO2 insertion onto Sn-oxide as a plausible mechanism for the CO2 reduction in the potential domain where metastable oxides are still present on the Sn surface. These results not only rationalize a number of literature divergent reports but also provide a guideline for the design of efficient CO2 reduction electrocatalysts.

Abstract:The reduction of CO2 to formic acid employing Sn encounters considerable challenges in desorption, stemming from excessively strong adsorption that induces geometric distortion of the intermediates. This study tackles the issue by adjusting electronegativity and ionic radius to shift the rate‐determining step from difficult desorption to the initial hydrogenation step, culminating in enhanced selectivity. Tin‐based materials have been designed as potential catalysts for the electrochemical conversion of CO2 into a single product. However, such tin‐based materials still face the challenges of unsatisfactory selectivity, because the rate‐determining step is situated within the slow desorption step. In this work, a variety of tin‐based materials are synthesized using the electrospinning technique in an effort to control the adsorption strength during electrochemical reduction, therefore improving the selectivity of CO2 reduction toward formate. The optimized SnS material exhibits moderate adsorption strength to *OCHO and *HCOOH, and the appropriate atomic distance of Sn–Sn maintained the balanced adsorption posture of both intermediate. Therefore, the rate‐determining step can be shifted from the slow desorption of the *HCOOH step (Sn) to the first hydrogenation of the *OCHO species step (SnS). Due to this shift, the SnS/C electrode demonstrated excellent selectivity, with a Faradaic efficiency of 96% for the production of formate. A maximum current density of −12.5 mA cm−2 for formate is also achieved for a period of 33 h.

Densely Packed, Ultra Small SnO Nanoparticles for Enhanced Activity and Selectivity in Electrochemical CO2 Reduction

Abstract:Controlling the selectivity in electrochemical CO2 reduction is an unsolved challenge. While tin (Sn) has emerged as a promising non-precious catalyst for CO2 electroreduction, most Sn-based catalysts produce formate as the major product, which is less desirable than CO in terms of separation and further use. Tin monoxide (SnO) nanoparticles supported on carbon black were synthesized and assembled and their application in CO2 reduction was studied. Remarkably high selectivity and partial current densities for CO formation were obtained using these SnO nanoparticles compared to other Sn catalysts. The high activity is attributed to the ultra-small size of the nanoparticles (2.6 nm), while the high selectivity is attributed to a local pH effect arising from the dense packing of nanoparticles in the conductive carbon black matrix.

Sub-5 nm SnO2 chemically coupled hollow carbon spheres for efficient electrocatalytic CO2 reduction

Abstract:The electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) represents a sustainable approach to convert the continuously accumulating CO2 emission into fuels or value-added chemicals. Tin and its compounds are recognized as formate selective CO2RR catalysts, while their catalytic activities and stabilities significantly depend on the micro/nanostructures and the corresponding electronic structures of the catalysts. Herein, we developed a sub-5 nm SnO2 nanoparticle-decorated hollow carbon spherical structure (SnO2/C) as an efficient CO2RR electrocatalyst. Compared to the plain SnOx nanoparticle-aggregated hollow spheres and hollow carbon spheres, SnO2/C achieved a much enhanced CO2RR catalytic performance, including better faradaic efficiencies (FE) and enhanced electrochemical stability. The much improved CO2RR activity and stability of SnO2/C were attributed to the Sn-O-C linkages between SnO2 and the carbon sphere, which led to the increased CO2 chemisorption, fast electron transfer, and the increased number of catalytically active sites.
Electrochemical reduction of SnO2 to Sn from the Bottom: In-Situ formation of SnO2/Sn heterostructure for highly efficient electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide to formate

Abstract:Design and engineering of low-cost, high-performance catalysts is a critical step in electrochemical CO2 reduction (CO2R) to value-added chemicals and fuels. Herein, SnO2 nanoparticles were grown onto carbon cloth (SnO2/CF) by a facile hydrothermal procedure and exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity towards CO2R due to reconstruction into SnO2/Sn Mott-Schottky heterojunctions during CO2R electrolysis, as manifested in X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and operando Raman spectroscopy measurements. The heterostructured SnO2/Sn electrode delivered a high faradaic efficiency of 93 ± 1% and a partial current density of 28.7 mA cm−2 for formate production at −1.0 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode in an H-type cell (which remained stable for 9 h), and 174.86 mA cm−2 at −1.18 V on a gas-diffusion electrode in a flow cell. Density functional theory calculations show that the SnO2/Sn heterostructures in situ formed under CO2R conditions helped decrease the energy barrier to form formate as compared to pristine SnO2 and Sn, and were responsible for the high activity and selectivity of formate production. Results from this study unravels the evolution dynamics of SnO2 catalysts under CO2R condition and provides a further understanding of the active component of SnO2 catalyst in CO2R.

Abstract:The mesoporous metal oxide semiconductors exhibit unique chemical and physical characteristics, making them highly desirable for catalysis, electrochemistry, energy conversion, and energy storage applications. Here, we report the facial fabrication of mesoporous gray SnO2 (MGS) electrocatalysts employing an evaporation-induced co-assembly (EICA) approach, utilizing poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) triblock copolymers Pluronic P123 (PEO-PPO-PEO) triblock copolymer as a template for electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (eCO2RR). By sustaining the co-assembly conditions and utilizing a thermal treatment technique based on carbon, gray mesoporous SnO2 materials with a high density of active sites and oxygen vacancies can be constructed. The MGS materials were employed in eCO2RR in a flow cell type, which exhibits excellent catalytic activity and selectivity toward formate with a high partial current density of -234 mA cm-2 and Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 93.60 % at -1.3 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). Interestingly, the mesoporous SnO2 with a 1.5 wt% ratio of Sn precursor to P123 surfactant (MS-1.5@350N-400A) electrode exhibits a high level of Faradaic efficiency (FE) of (98%) at a low overpotential of -0.6 VRHE, which is a seldom recorded performance for similar systems. A stable FE of 96 ± 1% was observed in the range of -0.6 to -1.2 VRHE, which is the result of a large surface area (184 m2/g) and a high number of active sites and oxygen vacancies within the mesostructured framework.

Abstract:In light of environmental concerns and energy demand, significant progress has been made toward CO2 reduction with high activity and selectivity. Particular interest has been focused on liquid products because of the easier separation process and higher value comparing to traditional gaseous products. Formic acid (or formate) can be one of the most economically viable reduction products. Nevertheless, few catalysts can meet the requirement for commercial-viable production, especially the current density. Herein, a hierarchical-Sn3O4 nanosheet (H-Sn3O4 NS) electrocatalyst is synthesized and applied into a three-compartment CO2 flow cell electrolyzer with ultrahigh current density. The as-synthesized H-Sn3O4 NS electrocatalyst enables electrochemical CO2 reduction to formate with the selectivity of 91.1% at -1.02 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) as well as a partial current density of 421 mA cm(-2), whose performance is among the best that has been reported for CO2 electrocatalysts. The superior performance is due to the three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical structure, which supplies a large electrochemical surface area (ECSA) to facilitate mass and charge transfer. And the stability study with in-situ Raman spectroscopy and XRD characterization exhibited that the Sn3O4 materials could still maintain its original oxidation state under the maximum formate Faradaic efficiency of CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). The further theoretical calculation shows that the catalyst surface is beneficial for the formation of OCHO star (the intermediate of formate) than COOH star (the intermediate of CO) or H-star (the intermediate of H-2), which is in favor of the high activity and selectivity for formate in the experiments.

Abstract:For CO2 electrocatalytic reduction, it is highly challenging to activate CO2 at a low overpotential. Herein, we demonstrated to modify the surface properties of tin dioxide nanosheets loaded on carbon fibers via the partial coating of nitrogen-doped carbon (NC). The NC layers with Lewis base sites on SnO2 nanosheets would facilitate the surface adsorption and subsequent conversion of CO2 into formate. Therefore, the optimal electrocatalyst exhibits very high Faradic efficiency (>80%) in a broad potential range of -0.6 - -1.0 V (vs. RHE) with the maximum value up to 93% and good long-term stability for 24 h. Both experimental results and theoretical calculations firstly revealed that the improved performance would be attributed to the improved local CO2 concentration due to the surface modification of SnO2 nanosheets with NC. Therefore, the surface regulation of SnO2 plays a significant role in promoting the catalytic performance in CO2 electroreduction reaction.

Abstract:The electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to liquid fuels is a promising strategy to store the intermittent renewable energies into high-value chemicals. Here, two-dimensional SnO2 nanosheet (similar to 3 nm in thickness) materials were synthesized using the hydrothermal method and characterized as efficient electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction to formate. Compared to the monometallic Sn-based catalysts, the SnO2 nanosheet electrodes exhibit a much improved performance. A large current density of 471 mA cm(-2) for formate production and a high Faradaic efficiency of 94.2% are simultaneously achieved using a three-compartment microfluidic flow cell electrolyzer. These results set a new record for formate production among monometallic Sn-based catalysts for the CO2 electroreduction reaction. Density functional theory calculations reveal the intrinsic improvement in the performance by the SnO2 surface site over the metallic Sn site.

Abstract:The global energy-related CO2 emissions have rapidly increased as the world economy heavily relied on fossil fuels. This paper explores the pressing challenge of CO2 emissions and highlights the role of porous metal oxide materials in the electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 (CO2RR). The focus is on the development of robust and selective catalysts, particularly metal and metal-oxide-based materials. Porous metal oxides offer high surface area, enhancing the accessibility to active sites and improving reaction kinetics. The tunability of these materials allows for tailored catalytic behavior, targeting optimized reaction mechanisms for CO2RR. The work also discusses the various synthesis strategies and identifies key structural and compositional features, addressing challenges like high overpotential, poor selectivity, and low stability. Based on these insights, we suggest avenues for future research on porous metal oxide materials for electrochemical CO2 reduction.
