Abstract:The good performance of Cu displayed in CO2 conversion promotes the study on how to disperse Cu into 2D materials for better catalysis. Inspired by the recent studies on new 2D porous B sheets [Angew. Chem., Int. Ed., 2017, 56, 10093; Adv. Mater., 2018, 30, 1704025; Phys. Rev. Lett., 2017, 118, 096401], here for the first time we have explored the catalytic properties of Cu atomic chains on β-borophene sheets, and have found that the Cu-B sheet can break the scaling relationship through providing secondary adsorption sites, thus leading to small overpotentials in the preferable reaction pathway CO2 → COOH* → CO* → CHO* → CH2O* → CH3O* → CH3OH. The Cu atomic chains also lower the energy barrier by forming assistant adsorptions of H*. Electronic structure analyses further show that the Cu atomic chain structure stabilizes the CHO* bonding through an enhanced σ bonding-π back-bonding mode. Our study not only sheds light on the design of new catalysts for effective CO2 conversion but also expands the applications of B sheets.

Abstract:Stable and rigid carbon atomic chains were experimentally realized by removing carbon atoms row by row from graphene through the controlled energetic electron irradiation inside a transmission electron microscope. The observed structural dynamics of carbon atomic chains such as formation, migration, and breakage were well explained by density-functional theory calculations. The method we reported here is promising to investigate all-carbon-based devices with the carbon atomic chains as the conducting channel, which can be regarded as the ultimate basic component of molecular devices.

Abstract:Copper (Cu) has been considered as the most promising catalyst for the electrochemical conversion of CO2 to multicarbon (C2+) products. However, insufficient coverage of the *CO intermediate on the C2+ formation Cu(100) facet largely hinders the C-C coupling process and thus the C2+ conversion efficiency. Herein, we developed an epitaxial growth strategy to generate highly tensile-strained Cu(100) facets via the epitaxial growth of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) on Cu(100) facets to promote *CO coverage for efficient CO2 to C2+ conversion. The highest ∼6% tensile strain on the Cu(100) facets was obtained by lattice mismatch between the Cu(100) and hBN(002) facets. Theory calculations indicated that tensile-strained Cu(100) facets deliver a notable d-band center upshift to enhance *CO adsorption. As a result, the obtained highly tensile-strained Cu(100) facets enabled an 8-fold improvement of *CO coverage and thus a 83.4% C2+ Faradaic efficiency at 1.2 A cm-2 in strongly acidic electrolyte (pH = 1).

Abstract:Cu catalysts are well-known for their good performance in CO2 conversion. Compared to CO and CH4 production, C2 products have higher volumetric energy densities and are more valuable in industrial applications. In this work, we screened the catalytic ability of C2 production on several 1D Cu atomic chain structures and find that Cu edge-decorated zigzag graphene nanoribbons (Cu-ZGNR) are capable of catalyzing CO2 conversion to ethanol, and CH3 CH2 OH is the main C2 product with a maximum free energy change of 0.60 eV. The planar tetracoordinate carbon structures in Cu-ZGNR provide unique chemical bonding features for catalytic reaction on the Cu atoms. Detailed mechanism analyses with transition states search show that CO* dimerization is favored against CHO* formation in the reaction. By adjusting the CO* coverage, the selectivity of the C2 product can be enhanced owing to less pronounced steric effects for COCHO*, which is feasible under experimental conditions. This study expands the catalyst family for C2 products from CO2 based on nano carbon structures with new features.

Abstract:The electrochemical reduction of CO2 offers an elegant solution to the current energy crisis and carbon emission issues, but the catalytic efficiency for CO2 reduction is seriously restricted by the inherent scaling relations between the adsorption energies of intermediates. Herein, by combining the concept of single-atom catalysts and multiple active sites, we design heteronuclear dual-atom catalysts to break through the stubborn restriction of scaling relations on catalytic activity. Twenty-one kinds of heteronuclear transition-metal dimers are embedded in monolayer C2N as potential dual-atom catalysts. First-principles calculations reveal that by adjusting the components of dimers, the two metal atoms play the role of carbon adsorption sites and oxygen adsorption sites respectively, which results in the decoupling of adsorption energies of key intermediates. Free energy profiles demonstrate that CO2 can be efficiently reduced to CH4 on CuCr/C2N and CuMn/C2N with low limiting potentials of -0.37 V and -0.32 V, respectively. This study suggests that the introduction of multiple active sites into porous two-dimensional materials would provide a great possibility for breaking scaling relations to achieve efficient multi-intermediate electrocatalytic reactions.

Abstract:Cu catalysts are well known for their good performance in CO2 conversion and Cu atomic catalysts-supported porous two-dimensional (2D) materials are of special interest for CO2 electroreduction. In this work, we have explored the catalytic properties of Cu atomic catalysts supported on the newly synthesized triphenylene–graphdiyne [ ACS Appl. Mater. Interfaces 2019, 11, 2730] using DFT calculations. We have found that triphenylene–graphdiyne can fix the Cu atoms in triangular pores with diacetylenic linkages through π → d interactions. The single Cu atomic catalyst is catalytically active toward CO production through carboxyl mechanism with an overpotential of 0.26 V, which can be tuned to 0.16 and 0.08 V when functionalized with O and NH, respectively, through shifting the d-band center and adjusting the adsorption energies, leading to an enhanced energy efficiency.
Mechanism of electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction by borophene supported bimetallic catalysts

Abstract:Bimetal atom catalysts (BACs) hold significant potential for various applications as a result of the synergistic interaction between adjacent metal atoms. This interaction leads to improved catalytic performance, while simultaneously maintaining high atomic efficiency and exceptional selectivity, similar to single atom catalysts (SACs). Bimetallic site catalysts (M2β12) supported by β12-borophene were developed as catalysts for electrocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR). The research on density functional theory (DFT) demonstrates that M2β12 exhibits exceptional stability, conductivity, and catalytic activity. Investigating the most efficient reaction pathway for CO2RR by analyzing the Gibbs free energy (ΔG) during potential determining steps (PDS) and choosing a catalyst with outstanding catalytic performance for CO2RR. The overpotential required for Fe2β12 and Ag2β12 to generate CO is merely 0.05 V. This implies that the conversion of CO2 to CO can be accomplished with minimal additional voltage. The overpotential values for Cu2β12 and Ag2β12 during the formation of HCOOH were merely 0.001 and 0.07 V, respectively. Furthermore, the Rh2β12 catalyst exhibits a relatively low overpotential of 0.51 V for CH3OH and 0.65 V for CH4. The Fe2β12 produces C2H4 through the *CO-*CO pathway, while Ag2β12 generates CH3CH2OH via the *CO-*CHO coupling pathway, with remarkably low overpotentials of 0.84 and 0.60 V, respectively. The study provides valuable insights for the systematic design and screening of electrocatalysts for CO2RR that exhibit exceptional catalytic performance and selectivity.

Abstract:Presented here are two novel porous supramolecular boron imidazolate frameworks (BIF-106 and BIF-107), which are stabilized through relatively weak interactions between two-dimensional boron imidazolate layers. CO2 Electroreduction Performance of Transition Metal Dimers Supported on Graphene: A Theoretical Study

Abstract:Graphene-based materials are being hotly pursued for energy and environment applications. Inspired by the recent experimental synthesis of Fe-2 dimer supported on graphene (He, Z.; He, K.; Robertson, A. W.; Kirkland, A. I.; Kim, D.; Ihm, J.; Yoon, E.; Lee, G.-D.; Warner, J. H. Nano Lett. 2014, 14, 3766-3772), here using large-scale screening-based density functional theory and microkinetics modeling, we have identified that some transition metal dimers (Cu-2, CuMn, and CuNi), when supported on graphene with adjacent single vacancies (labeled as XY@2SV), perform better in CO2 electroreduction with reduced overpotental and enhanced current density. Specifically, Cu-2@2SV is catalytically active toward CO2 production, similar to Au electrodes but distinct from bulk Cu; MnCu@2SV is selective toward CH4 generation, while NiCu@2SV promotes CH3OH production because of the difference in oxophilicity between incorporated Mn and Ni. The advantages of the outstanding selectivity of products, the high dispersity of spatial distribution, and the reduced overpotentials allow these new systems to be promising catalysts, which will motivate more experimental research in this direction to further explore graphene-based materials for CO2 conversion.

Abstract:Unlike graphene and other 2D materials, borophene is 2D polymorphic with diverse hexagonal holes (HHs)‐triangles ratios and the concentrations of HHs are highly substrate dependent. Here, we systematically explored the evolution of boron cluster on Ag(111) surface, B N @Ag(111) (N=1~36), to understand the nucleation of 2D boron sheet on metal surface. Our calculation showed that, with the size increasing, the structures of most stable B N clusters undergo an evolution from compact triangular lattice, such as double‐chains or triple‐chains, to the ones with mixed triangular‐hexagonal lattices. The first single‐HH appears at N=12 and the first double‐HH appears at N=27. The stability of large B N clusters with mixed structures is derived from the charge transfer between triangular lattice and the HHs, as well as between the substrates and the B N clusters. Our results provide a deep understanding on the formation of small boron clusters in the initial nucleation stage of borophene growth.

Abstract:The polymorphism of borophene makes it a promising system to realize tunable physical or chemical properties. Various pure borophene phases consisting of quasi‐1D boron chains with different widths have been commonly obtained in experimental studies. Here, it is shown that, due to a substrate mediation effect, artificial long‐range ordered phases of borophene consisting of different combinations of boron chains seamlessly joined together can be achieved on Ag(100). Scanning tunneling microscopy measurements and theoretical calculations reveal that mixed‐chain phases are more stable than the pure phase, and interact only weakly with the substrate. The mixed‐chain phases with various proportions of different chains can be well separated based on the crystal direction of the substrate. The successful growth of mixed‐chain phases is expected to deepen the impact of substrate tailored synthesis of borophene.

Abstract:Considering the problems of high costs, low catalytic activity and selectivity in the metal-based catalysts for CO2 electroreduction, we apply boron-containing metal-free B2S sheet as an alternative to the traditional metal-based catalysts. Reaction energy calculations identify the preferred "Formate" pathway for CO2 conversion to CH3OH on B2S, in which the thermodynamic energy barrier obtained by using the Computational Hydrogen Electrode model is 0.57 eV, and the kinetic energy barrier obtained by searching the transition states is 1.18 eV. Another possible reaction pathway, "RWGS+CO-hydro", is suppressed and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) side reaction is nonspontaneous. Compared to Cu(211) with the highest catalytic activity among all transition metals, B2S sheet exhibits a better catalytic activity with a lower overpotential for CO2 reduction and a better selectivity that suppresses the non-target reaction.

Abstract:Development of high-performance heterogeneous catalytic materials is important for the rapid upgrade of chemicals, which remains a challenge. Here, the benzene oxidation reaction was used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the atomic interface strategy to improve catalytic performance. The developed B,N-cocoordinated Cu single atoms anchored on carbon nanosheets (Cu1/B-N) with the Cu-N2B1 atomic interface was prepared by the pyrolysis of a precoordinated Cu precursor. Benefiting from the unique atomic Cu-N2B1 interfacial structure, the designed Cu1/B-N exhibited considerable activity in the oxidation of benzene, which was much higher than Cu1/N-C, Cu NPs/N-C, and N-C catalysts. A theoretical study showed that the enhanced catalytic performance resulted from the optimized adsorption of intermediates, which originated from the manipulation of the electronic structure of Cu single atoms induced by B atom coordination in the Cu-N2B1 atomic interface. This study provides an innovative approach for the rational design of high-performance heterogeneous catalytic materials at the atomic level.

Abstract:Theoretically predicted materials are often synthesized in low yields, and unexpected relationships are often encountered between the target materials and byproducts. Recently, two-dimensional boron materials proposed on the basis of model simulations and first principles calculations and possessing abundant atomic structures have attracted considerable interest. Borophane or the hydrogen boride (HB) sheet has been predicted to be the Dirac nodal semimetal when it has a boron network of nonsymmorphic symmetry. Upgrading the standard method, we fabricated freestanding HB sheets possessing either an apparent Fermi edge, reduced spectral weight, or a Fermi-level energy gap, as confirmed by using microbeam photoemission spectroscopy. The gapless electronic structures were correlated with terminal B-H bonds at the sheet edges, indicating the electronic modification of the porous structure as directly microscopically observed. The gapped or insulating sheet was fabricated via oxidation. This research provides methods for regulating the structural morphology and electronic states of HB sheets during synthesis.
