Abstract:Polyanion doping shows great potential to improve electrochemical performance of Li-rich layered oxide (LLO) materials. Here, by optimizing the doping content and annealing temperature, we obtained boron-doped LLO materials Li1.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13BxO2 (x = 0.04 and 0.06) with comprehensively improved performance (94% capacity retention after 100 cycles at 60 mA/g current density and a rate capability much higher compared to that of the pristine sample) at annealing temperatures of 750 and 650 °C, respectively, which are much lower than the traditional annealing temperature of similar material systems without boron. The scenario of the complex crystallization process was captured using Cs-corrected high-angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopic (HAADF-STEM) imaging techniques. The existence of layered, NiO-type, and spinel-like structures in a single particle induced by boron doping and optimization of annealing temperature is believed to contribute to the remarkable improvement of cycling stability and rate capability.
Mitigation of Cation Mixing of LiNiO2-based Cathode Materials by Li-doping for High-Performing Lithium-Ion Battery

Abstract:Element doping of transition metal (TM) ions is commonly employed in the enhancement of structural and interfacial stability of layered nickel-rich cathode materials to construct high energy density lithium-ion batter-ies. However, one of the main factors for structural evolution and poor electrochemical stability of the layered nickel-rich cathode materials is the inherent Li+/Ni2+ disorder caused by dopants. To regulate the cation mix-ing, herein, the Li-doping is introduced into the TM slabs of the LiNiO2-based materials. Benefited from the charge compensation of the TM layers, the doped Li+ ions lead to the alleviation of the Li+/Ni2+ disorder gen-erated during the synthesis stage and electrochemical charge/discharge cycles. It is demonstrated that proper amount of the doped Li+ ions would enhance the stability of the crystal lattice, improve the Li+ diffusion between electrode and electrolyte, and suppress the microcrack formation in the secondary grains of the mate-rials. This is verified by the synergistic effect of Li/Mn co-doping, in particular, the LiNiO2-based layered mate-rial with 11 mol% Li and 1 mol% Mn exhibits great improvement in long-term cycling stability with capacity retention 71.11% after 200 cycles at 0.5C. The Li-doping strategy might provide a new perspective to the enhancement of structural stability of the layered nickel-rich materials for lithium-ion batteries in the future.
Boron-doping induced lithophilic transition of graphene for dendrite-free lithium growth

Abstract:Li metal, possessing advantages of high theoretical specific capacity and low electrochemical potential, is regarded as the most promising anode material for next-generation batteries. However, despite decades of intensive research, its practical application is still hindered by safety hazard and low Coulombic efficiency, which is primarily caused by dendritic Li deposition. To address this issue, restraining dendrite growth at the nucleation stage is deemed as the most effective method. By utilizing the difference of electronegativity between boron atoms and carbon atoms, carbon atoms around boron atoms in boron-doped graphene (BG) turn into lithiophilic sites, which can enhance the adsorption capacity to Li+ at the nucleation stage. Consequently, an ultralow overpotential of 10 mV at a current density of 0.5 mA/cm2 and a high average Coulombic efficiency of 98.54% over more than 140 cycles with an areal capacity of 2 mAh/cm2 at a current density of 1 mA/cm2 were achieved. BG-Li|LiFePO4 full cells delivered a long lifespan of 480 cycles at 0.5 C and excellent rate capability. This work provides a novel method for rational design of dendrite-free Li metal batteries by regulating nucleation process.

A Novel Boron-doping Approach for Long-term Cycling Life of Li-rich Layered Cathode

Abstract:The commercial application of Li-rich Mn-based layered oxides (LLOs) is hindered due to their instability of lattice oxygen and dissolution of manganese. Herein, an effective and large-scale production co-precipitation boron-doping strategy was proposed to improve the performance of Li 1.15 Mn 0.53 Ni 0.22 Co 0.1 O 2 . We found that the boron introduced in the co-precipitation process will be uniformly distributed in the bulk and the resulting boron-doped Li 1.15 Mn 0.53 Ni 0.22 Co 0.1 O 2 shows excellent electrochemical properties with low doping amount. Multi-dimensional analysis shows that boron doping significantly improves the structural stability of materials. After 1200 cycles at 1C, boron-doped sample can deliver 147 mAhg −1 with an excellent retention of 80.1%, which is much higher than that of the pristine sample of 44% after 700 cycles. Moreover, the discharge voltage decay of the boron-doped samples is only 0.54 mV per cycle (1.39 mV for pristine). It is worth mentioning that the pouch-cell full battery cycle performance of doped samples is also excellent. The doped cathode//graphite shows a superior capacity retention of 83.6% after 500 cycles without gas generation, while the pristine//graphite only hold the 46.6% of initial capacity. The dQ/dV curves and the SEM/EDS of electrode analysis verified higher reversibility of lattice oxygen, less manganese dissolution and more stable microstructure, which greatly improved the cycling life after boron doping.

Abstract:Sulfur cathodes in lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) suffer from the notorious "shuttle effect", low sulfur use ratio, and tardy transformation of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs), while using two-dimensional (2D) polar anchoring materials combined with single-atom catalysis is one of the promising methods to address these issues. Herein, the 3d transition metal (TM) doped 2D boron nitrides (BN), labeled as TM-BN, are studied for the anchoring and redox kinetics of LiPSs using first principles calculations. From the simulated results, the TM atom and adjacent N atoms are active adsorption sites for binding S atoms in LiPSs/S8 and Li atoms in LiPSs, respectively. A negative d-band center closer to the Fermi level of TM-BN is key for enhancing the binding strength of TM-S and lowering the Li2S decomposition energy barrier, while it deteriorates the activity of adjacent N atoms. Fortunately, the electrolyte environment has little effect on the superiority of the TM-BN for binding polysulfides/S8, guaranteeing the sturdy anchor of polysulfides/S8 in realistic conditions. The trade-off effect on the activities of TM and adjacent N atom sites in TM-BN for binding LiPSs highlights the excellence of Ti/V/Cr-BN as modification materials for LSB.

Enhancing electrochemical performance and structural stability of LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 cathode material for rechargeable lithium-ion batteries by boron doping

Abstract:LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 cathode materials with a range of boron doping contents were successfully synthesized via an in situ solid-state method. The structures and grain morphologies were examined to elucidate the effect of boron doping on the electrochemical performance of LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4. Scanning electron microscopy images show that the particle sizes of boron-doped LiNi0.5-x/2B x Mn1.5-x/2O4 samples increase compared with those of pure LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4. Characterization results confirm that boron doping could create more Mn3+ ions and increase the Mn3+ ions contents in LiNi0.5-x/2B x Mn1.5-x/2O4 samples with increasing boron doping content. A greater number of Mn3+ ions could enhance the cationic disorder degree, thereby resulting in high electronic conductivities of LiNi0.5-x/2B x Mn1.5-x/2O4 samples. Charge-discharge tests reveal that improvements in the electrochemical performance are achieved in LiNi0.5-x/2B x Mn1.5-x/2O4 samples compared with that of pure LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4. The boron-doped LiNi0.495B0.01Mn1.495O4 (denoted as LNMO-B0.01) cathode exhibits an excellent cycling stability with a capacity retention of 83.3% after 500 cycles at 3 C. Moreover, it also displays an optimal rate capability with discharge capacities of 136.1, 135.7, 130.3, 126.2, 123.1, 114.5, 104.5, and 82.9 mA h g−1 at 0.2, 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, and 10 C, respectively. The highest Li+ diffusion coefficient of LNMO-B0.01 determined from cyclic voltammetry tests indicates that an appropriate amount of boron doping could accelerate the Li+ diffusion in LNMO-B0.01. The lowest charge-transfer resistance obtained from the impedance spectra suggests that boron doping could promote kinetic charge transfer. As a result, this modification strategy can be utilized to enhance the electrochemical performance of LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 material.

Abstract:The chlorine‐rich lithium argyrodite is considered a promising superionic conductor electrolyte, but its practical application is limited due to poor air stability and instability toward lithium metal. In this work, BiF3 is proposed as a multi‐functional dopant for electrolyte modification, and the effects on the ionic conductivity, air stability, critical current density, and electrolyte/Li metal interfacial stability are studied. The results show that the doped electrolyte Li5.54P0.98Bi0.02S4.5Cl1.44F0.06 (LPBiSClF0.06) still maintains a relatively high ionic conductivity of 5.37 mS cm−1. Additionally, the formation of BiS45− unit and LiBiS2 phase provides high air/moisture resistibility. Meanwhile, the critical current density of the Li/LPBiSClF0.06/Li cell is increased two‐fold (2.1 mA cm−2). The in‐situ formation of LiF and Li‐Bi alloy at the lithium metal/electrolyte interface plays a key role in achieving high performance. As a result, the assembled LCO@LNO/LPBiSClF0.06/Li battery retains 78.4% of its capacity after 100 cycles at 0.2C.

Structure evolution of chromium-doped boron clusters: toward the formation of endohedral boron cages

Abstract:The electron-deficient nature of boron endows isolated boron clusters with a variety of interesting structural and bonding properties that can be further enriched through metal doping. In the current work, we report the structural and electronic properties of a series of chromium-doped boron clusters. The global minimum structures for CrB n clusters with an even number of n ranging from 8 to 22 are proposed through extensive first-principles swarm-intelligence structure searches. Half-sandwich structures are found to be preferred for CrB8, CrB10, CrB12 and CrB14 clusters and to transform to a drum-like structure at CrB16 cluster. Endohedral cage structures with the Cr atom located at the center are energetically most favorable for CrB20 and CrB22 clusters. Notably, the endohedral CrB20 cage has a high symmetry of D 2d and a large HOMO-LUMO gap of 4.38 eV, whose stability is attributed to geometric fit and formation of an 18-electron closed-shell configuration. The current results advance our understanding of the structure and bonding of metal-doped boron clusters.
Triple-chain Boron Clusters: Lengthening via Phosphorus Doping and Enhancing Stability through {P} by {CH} Substitution

Abstract:This theoretical study presents novel insights into the doping of boron clusters with an increasing number of dopant atoms, ranging from 1 to 4, that preserve the integrity of the original boron framework. The triple-chain forms of clusters B10 and B16 remain unchanged upon sequential addition of P atoms, showcasing a perfect isolobal substitution of {P} by {CH}. Similarities in the number of delocalized electrons are observed between pure and doped boron clusters, alongside the subsequent substitution of {P} by {CH}. All triple-chain structures exhibit high thermodynamic stability, having low vertical attachment energies and high vertical ionization energies. The lowest-lying isomer of B16P4 has thus a triple-chain shape instead of a tetrahedral Td form as previously reported. While an AdNDP analysis confirms the number of globally delocalized electrons, it differs much from a previous interpretation. The magnetic ring current maps support a double aromaticity of triple-chain structures. Electron counting rules established for triple-chain structures are verified. The particle-in-a-rectangular-box model elucidates the relationship between structure size and electron configuration and aids in understanding the transition from antiaromatic to aromatic configurations. The self-locking phenomenon is crucial for adhering to the triple-chain model and satisfying electron configuration requirements.

Abstract:Solid-state lithium batteries (SSLBs) using garnet electrolytes potentially have a higher energy density and are safer than liquid organic electrolyte Li-ion batteries. However, SSLBs face challenges of Li dendrite and high interface resistance. In this work, we overcome both challenges by doping strontium (Sr) into lithium anodes. Different from all previous metal/metal oxide coating on garnet or Li alloy anodes that form lithiophilic interlayer, Li–Sr/SrO-doped Li2O are enriched on the interface forming a lithiophilic/lithiophobic bifunctional layer. The interlayer reduces the interfacial resistance and also suppresses lithium dendrite. The stability of the lithiophobic SrO-doped Li2O against Li prevents reducing the garnet and suppresses Li dendrite, which distinguishes it from all reported alloy electron-conducting interlayers. The optimized Li–Sr|garnet|Li–Sr symmetric cell achieves a critical current density of 1.3 mA/cm2 and can be cycled for 1,000 cycles under 0.5 mA/cm2 at room temperature. The bifunctional lithiophilic/lithiophobic interlayer provides a new strategy for high-performance garnet solid-state lithium batteries.

Abstract:Structures and electronic properties of alkali metal atom-doped boron clusters MB120/– (M = Li, Na, K) are determined using the CALYPSO method for the global minimum search followed by density functional theory. It is found that the global minima obtained for the neutral clusters correspond to the half-sandwich structure and those of the monoanionic clusters correspond to the boat-shaped structure. The neutral MB12 (M = Li, Na, K) can be considered as a member of the half-sandwich doped B12 clusters, and the geometrical pattern of anion MB12– (M = Li, Na, K) is a new structure that is different from other doped B12 clusters. Natural population and chemical bonding analyses reveal that the alkali metal atom-doped boron clusters MB12– are characterized as charge transfer complexes, M+B122–, resulting in symmetrically distributed chemical bonds and electrostatic interactions between cationic M+ and boron atoms. The calculated spectra indicate that MB120/– (M = Li, Na, K) has meaningful spectral features that can be compared with future experimental data. Our work enriches the varieties of geometrical structures of doped boron clusters and can provide much insight into boron nanomaterials.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Mitigating Lattice Distortion of High-Voltage LiCoO2 via Core-Shell Structure Induced by Cationic Heterogeneous Co-Doping for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Abstract Inactive elemental doping is commonly used to improve the structural stability of high-voltage layered transition-metal oxide cathodes. However, the one-step co-doping strategy usually results in small grain size since the low diffusivity ions such as Ti 4+ will be concentrated on grain boundaries, which hinders the grain growth. In order to synthesize large single-crystal layered oxide cathodes, considering the different diffusivities of different dopant ions, we propose a simple two-step multi-element co-doping strategy to fabricate core–shell structured LiCoO 2 (CS-LCO). In the current work, the high-diffusivity Al 3+ /Mg 2+ ions occupy the core of single-crystal grain while the low diffusivity Ti 4+ ions enrich the shell layer. The Ti 4+ -enriched shell layer (~ 12 nm) with Co/Ti substitution and stronger Ti–O bond gives rise to less oxygen ligand holes. In-situ XRD demonstrates the constrained contraction of c -axis lattice parameter and mitigated structural distortion. Under a high upper cut-off voltage of 4.6 V, the single-crystal CS-LCO maintains a reversible capacity of 159.8 mAh g −1 with a good retention of ~ 89% after 300 cycles, and reaches a high specific capacity of 163.8 mAh g −1 at 5C. The proposed strategy can be extended to other pairs of low- (Zr 4+ , Ta 5+ , and W 6+ , etc.) and high-diffusivity cations (Zn 2+ , Ni 2+ , and Fe 3+ , etc.) for rational design of advanced layered oxide core–shell structured cathodes for lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Full tetrahedron connected structures possess considerable potential as cathodes for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to more lithium storage sites to obtain high specific capacity. However, different from the full octahedron and octahedron/tetrahedron hybrid structures with coplanar or collinear, the tetrahedron network is connected by common vertex, which provokes structural instability and poor electrochemistry performance. Here, using first principles calculations combined with experiments, we found that a heavy distortion and big volume expansion during delithiation for full tetrahedron (LiO4, FeO4 and SiO4 tetrahedra) Li2FeSiO4 nanocrystal lead to phase change or even structure fracture, and the optimized Ti(IV) doped in Fe sites can enhance the coupling effect among the tetrahedra by the strong d-orbital hybridization and like “spring” to hold these tetrahedra and prohibit structure fracture. Meanwhile, the Ti(IV) doping can also shorten the distance of two adjacent Li sites to decrease the activation barrier for Li-ion diffusion. Furthermore, the n-type doping effect increases the electronic conductivity. This discovery can be extended to other tetrahedron structures as well, providing a general approach to develop promising next-generation cathode materials for high-energy and long-life lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Solid-state lithium batteries (SSLBs) using garnet electrolytes potentially have a higher energy density and are safer than commercial liquid organic electrolyte Li-ion batteries. However, SSLBs still face challenges of lithium dendrite growth and high interface resistance. In this work, we addressed both challenges by doping strontium (Sr) into lithium anodes. Different from all previous reported metal/metal oxide coating on garnet or lithium alloy anodes that forms lithiophilic interlayer at Li | garnet, strontium/strontium oxide are enriched on the interface between Li and garnet forming a lithiophilic/lithiophobic bifunctional layer of Li-Sr/SrO-doped-Li 2 O. This interlayer simultaneously reduces the interfacial resistance and suppresses the growth of lithium dendrite, which is confirmed by comprehensive material characterizations, simulations and electrochemical evaluations using Ta-doped LLZTO (Li 6.5 La 3 Zr 1.5 Ta 0.5 O 12 ) as a model solid-state electrolyte. The unique stability of the lithiophobic SrO doped Li 2 O layer against Li prevents reducing the garnet and suppresses lithium dendrite, which distinguishes it from all reported alloy electron-conductor interlayers. The optimized Li-Sr | LLZTO | Li-Sr symmetrical cells have a critical current density of 1.3 mA/cm 2 and can be cycled for 1,000 cycles under 0.5 mA/cm 2 at room temperature. Abstract:Because of their interesting structures and bonding and potentials as motifs for new nanomaterials, size-selected boron clusters have received tremendous interest in recent years. In particular, boron cluster anions (B-n(-)) have allowed systematic joint photoelectron spectroscopy and theoretical studies, revealing predominantly two-dimensional structures. The discovery of the planar B-36 cluster with a central hexagonal vacancy provided the first experimental evidence of the viability of 2D borons, giving rise to the concept of borophene. The finding of the B-40 cage cluster unveiled the existence of fullerene-like boron clusters (borospherenes). Metal-doping can significantly extend the structural and bonding repertoire of boron clusters. Main-group metals interact with boron through s/p orbitals, resulting in either half-sandwich-type structures or substitutional structures. Transition metals are more versatile in bonding with boron, forming a variety of structures including half-sandwich structures, metal-centered boron rings, and metal-centered boron drums. Transition metal atoms have also been found to be able to be doped into the plane of 2D boron clusters, suggesting the possibility of metalloborophenes. Early studies of di-metal-doped boron clusters focused on gold, revealing ladder-like boron structures with terminal gold atoms. Recent observations of highly symmetric Ta2B6- and Ln(2)B(n)(-) (n = 7-9) clusters have established a family of inverse sandwich structures with monocyclic boron rings stabilized by two metal atoms. The study of size-selected boron and doped-boron clusters is a burgeoning field of research. Further investigations will continue to reveal more interesting structures and novel chemical bonding, paving the foundation for new boron-based chemical compounds and nanomaterials.
Lithiophilicity Chemistry of Heteroatom-Doped Carbon to Guide Uniform Lithium Nucleation in Lithium Metal Anodes.

Abstract:The uncontrollable growth of lithium (Li) dendrites seriously impedes practical applications of Li metal batteries. Various lithiophilic conductive frameworks, especially carbon hosts, are used to guide uniform Li nucleation and thus deliver a dendrite-free composite anode. However, the lithiophilic nature of these carbon hosts is poorly understood. Herein, the lithiophilicity chemistry of heteroatom-doped carbon is investigated through both first principles calculations and experimental verifications to guide uniform Li nucleation. The electronegativity, local dipole, and charge transfer are proposed to reveal the lithiophilicity of doping sites. Li bond chemistry further deepens the understanding of lithiophilicity. The O-doped and O/B-co-doped carbons exhibit the best lithiophilicity among single-doped and co-doped carbons, respectively. The excellent lithiophilicity achieved by O-doping carbon is further validated by Li nucleation overpotential measurement. This work uncovers the lithiophilicity chemistry of heteroatom-doped carbons and affords a mechanistic guidance to Li metal anode frameworks for safe rechargeable batteries.

Abstract:Lithium-rich transition metal oxides are considered a promising cathodic solutions in Li-ion batteries to meet the growing energetic demand, thanks to their high specific capacity and operational voltage [1-2]. Li-rich layered materials have a general stoichiometry Li1+xTM1-xO2, in which TM is a blend of transition metals, as Ni, Mn, Co [2]. They stand out due to their high lithium concentration and specific capacity [1-2]. The higher capacity of Lithium-Rich can be attributed to the specific anionic redox reaction in the bulk at above 4.5 V. Nevertheless, large irreversible capacity loss in the first cycle, poor rate capability, mean working potential decay upon cycling and cobalt content are still major drawbacks that are hindering commercialization. In order to make these materials up scalable to industrial production, it is important to consider the reduction of costs and the toxicity of raw materials, in particular cobalt. Cobalt reduction has been identified as major driver to improve the environmental benignity of batteries and the sustainability of the overall production-consumption-recycling lifecycle. Several efforts to reduce these problems have been made, including the development of different synthetic strategies, doping and surface modification. The most, widely explored, chemical strategy to mitigate the voltage decay and structural degradation in Lithium Rich cathodes is the doping. Elemental doping can be divided into cation and anion doping. As an example, incorporation of redox inactive metals, such as Al, Zr, Ti, has been proposed in order to stabilize the lattice as well as the partial replacement of lithium ions with other alkali cations, e.g. K and Na; or doping the oxygen anion sublattice. In this communication, we present our doping approaches. In particular, the simultaneous replacement of cobalt in the layered structure with aluminum and lithium (over-lithiation). Moreover, we present over-lithiated Co-free materials where the introduction of different amount of iron has been investigated. The characterization of these novel layered materials is reported in terms of composition, structure, morphology and electrochemical performances. Abstract:Crystalline solid electrolyte interphase Li2CO3 material with a large bandgap shows promise towards next-generation all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs). However, the inferior ionic diffusivity restricts such structure into a real battery setup. Herein, based on density functional theory (DFT) calculation and Python materials genomics (pymatgen), we theoretically develop the chemistry and local structural motifs to build a mixed boron-carbon framework Li2+xC1-xBxO3 (LCBO). We examine the electrochemical and chemical stability of LCBO-electrode interfaces by analyzing the thermodynamics of formation of interfacial phases. Interestingly, the LCBO material is automatically protected from further decomposition through the self-generated resistive interphase (Li2CO3 and Li3BO3), which gives a widening range of operating potential. The LCBO shows high interfacial stability with LiCoO2, LiMnO2, and LiMn2O4. More importantly, the theoretical Li-ion migration barrier of LCBO (x = 0.375) is about 0.23 ± 0.02 eV through a cooperative migration mechanism. Therefore, LCBO material combines high Li-ion diffusivity along with good interfacial stability, which makes it a promising solid-state electrolyte material for ASSLBs.

Abstract:A Ni-rich cobalt-free layered cathode material (LiNi x Mn 1− x O 2 ) is promising due to its low cost, excellent structural stability, and thermal stability. However, low Li-ion diffusion kinetics, highly reactive Ni 4+ , and stress-induced intragranular micro-cracking restrict its further application. Here, we report dual-functional boron-modification (doping and coating) on a cobalt-free single-crystal layered cathode (B-LiNi 0.75 Mn 0.25 O 2 ) via a simple solid-state method. The boron atoms prefer to occupy the tetrahedral interstices in the Li layer during the sintering process, which enlarges the c -axis for fast Li-ion diffusion kinetics and can also serve as a pillar to achieve an ultra-low (1.62%) c -axis lattice contraction at 80% state of charge (SOC). And boron doping passivates the lattice O, inhibits the irreversible phase transition and provides excellent thermal stability at a high cut-off voltage of 4.5 V. On the other hand, the byproduct LiBO 2 can improve Li-ion diffusion and alleviate side reactions at the electrode/electrolyte interface by serving as a Li-ion conductive coating layer. As a result, B–LiNi 0.75 Mn 0.25 O 2 is almost free of inter- and intragranular micro-cracking with faster Li-ion diffusion kinetics. It delivers 176.6 mA h g −1 at 1C and achieves 82.9% capacity retention after 200 cycles. This work not only provides a low-cost and scalable method to remove Co from conventional Ni-rich layered cathodes, but also reveals the commercial feasibility of highly safe single-crystal layered cathode materials.
