Abstract:Hydrogels such as poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylic acid) (pNIPAM-AAc) can be photopatterned to create a wide range of actuatable and self-folding microstructures. Mechanical motion is derived from the large and reversible swelling response of this cross-linked hydrogel in varying thermal or pH environments. This action is facilitated by their network structure and capacity for large strain. However, due to the low modulus of such hydrogels, they have limited gripping ability of relevance to surgical excision or robotic tasks such as pick-and-place. Using experiments and modeling, we design, fabricate, and characterize photopatterned, self-folding functional microgrippers that combine a swellable, photo-cross-linked pNIPAM-AAc soft-hydrogel with a nonswellable and stiff segmented polymer (polypropylene fumarate, PPF). We also show that we can embed iron oxide (Fe2O3) nanoparticles into the porous hydrogel layer, allowing the microgrippers to be responsive and remotely guided using magnetic fields. Using finite element models, we investigate the influence of the thickness and the modulus of both the hydrogel and stiff polymer layers on the self-folding characteristics of the microgrippers. Finally, we illustrate operation and functionality of these polymeric microgrippers for soft robotic and surgical applications.

Abstract:This paper describes a novel electrostatically actuated microgripper with freeform geometries designed by a genetic algorithm. This new semiautomated design methodology is capable of designing near-optimal MEMS devices that are robust to fabrication tolerances. The use of freeform geometries designed by a genetic algorithm significantly improves the performance of the microgripper. An experiment shows that the designed microgripper has a large displacement (91.5 μm) with a low actuation voltage (47.5 V), which agrees well with the theory. The microgripper has a large actuation displacement and can handle micro-objects with a size from 10 to 100 μm. A grasping experiment on human hair with a diameter of 77 μm was performed to prove the functionality of the gripper. The result confirmed the superior performance of the new design methodology enabling freeform geometries. This design method can also be extended to the design of many other MEMS devices.

Abstract:The fracture mechanism of brittle materials changes to plastic deformation when the grinding depth is controlled as small as several nanometers, surface finishes similar to those achieved in polishing or lapping is produced. A magnetostrictive micro-feed actuator made of Terfenol-D has been developed to realize ductile-grinding of brittle materials. Both numerical results and experiments show the excellent displacement-output performance of this actuator.

Abstract:This paper presents the design, modeling and position/force control of a new piezo-driven microgripper with integrated position and force sensors. The structural design of the microgripper is based on double amplification mechanisms employing the bridge-type mechanism and the parallelogram mechanism. The microgripper can generate a large gripping range and pure translation of the gripping arm. Through the pseudorigid-body-model method, theoretical models are derived. By means of several finite-element analysis simulations, the optimal structural parameters for the microgripper are acquired and the theoretical models are analyzed and validated. Furthermore, to improve the performance of the microgripper, a new hybrid position/force control scheme employing a nonlinear fuzzy logic controller combined with an incremental proportional-integral controller is presented. The control scheme is capable of regulating the position and the gripping force of the microgripper simultaneously. Experimental investigation and validation were performed and the experimental results verify the effectiveness of the developed structural design and the proposed hybrid control scheme.

Abstract:Microgrippers offer better operational flexibility in biological micromanipulation. However, they face challenges in size miniaturization and environmental adaptability (especially in biological liquid environments). To overcome these challenges, a novel pneumatic microgripper is proposed with a thin-walled multi-airbag structure that directly drives the clamping jaws in motion, with a simple and compact overall construction. The microgripper has a maximum clamping range of 925 μm and can provide a clamping force exceeding 25 mN, capable of lifting loads over 300 times its weight. The microgripper is integrative and can be mass-produced with biocompatible resins in a single-step high-precision 3D printing process. The pneumatic microgripper is utilized to achieve the sorting and assisted injection of mouse oocytes (60–80 μm), assisted cutting of porcine oocytes (100–120 μm), and microscopic threading (10–15 μm) operation with two-finger cooperation. These demonstrations confirm it can operate fine manipulation of microscopic biological structures in air and liquid, and has good biocompatibility and cooperative operational ability. The developed pneumatic microgripper shows broad application prospects in biomedical applications such as microsurgery, micro biopsy, and assisted reproduction.

Abstract:Soft grippers based on fluidic elastomer actuators have the characteristics of gentle and adaptable grasping that is difficult to realize by rigid grippers. However, it remains challenging to implement a compact gripping device that has multiple bending configurations to exert appropriate force, and sensory capabilities to evaluate the grasping state. Here, we present a soft gripper with variable effective lengths (VELs) that is achieved by rapidly softening selective shape memory polymer sections (within 0.6 s) via a flexible heater. A vortex tube is used to jet cold airflow to accelerate the stiffening process (within 14 s). We show that the soft gripper can not only identify objects but also exert higher gripping force by setting appropriate length according to pneumatic-thermal hybrid actuation. We further propose a touch-reconfiguration-grasp strategy to showcase the synergy of VELs and sensory feedback. The gripper first touches the object under the fully softened state and evaluates the grasping condition based on the sensors’ feedback, then reconfigures the bending length and grasps the object until successful. We envision that soft grippers with sensing ability and reconfigurable grasping configurations would be promising for future applications in unconstructed environments.

Abstract:Micro-gripper is an important tool to manipulate and assemble micro-scale objects. Generally, as micro-gripper is too small to be directly driven by general motors, it always needs special driving devices and suitable structure design. In this paper, two-finger micro-grippers are designed and fabricated, which utilize light-induced deformation smart material to make one of the two fingers. As the smart material is directly driven and controlled by remote lights instead of lines and motors, this light-driven mode simplifies the design of the two-finger micro-gripper and avoids special drivers and complex mechanical structure. In addition, a micro-manipulation experiment system is set up which is based on the light-driven micro-gripper. Experimental results show that this remotely light-driven micro-gripper has ability to manipulate and assemble micro-scale objects both in air and water. Furthermore, two micro-grippers can also work together for cooperation which can further enhance the assembly ability. On the other hand, this kind of remotely controllable micro-gripper that does not require on-board energy storage, can be used in mobile micro-robot as a manipulation hand.

Abstract:Micromanipulation tasks require microgrippers equipped with large displacement/size performance and position/force control capabilities. This paper reports the structural design, implementation and position/force switching control of an S-shaped microgripper which is driven by the micro-fiber-composite (MFC) actuator. Unlike conventional piezoelectric microgrippers, the MFC one can provide excellent characteristics of a larger displacement-volume ratio (i.e. the ratio of the maximal output displacement to the total volume of the microgripper) and simple structure. Combining the Hamilton's principle and the Bouc-Wen model, the dynamic model considering both the structural flexibility and the hysteresis non linearity of the microgripper is derived. Then, FEA simulations are conducted and the optimal structural dimensions are acquired. Moreover, the challenge of guaranteeing the smooth transition between the position and the force is realized through a switching control scheme. In particular, a fuzzy discrete sliding mode (FDSM) controller based on the dynamic model and a fuzzy regulator is used to control the output displacement, and an incremental PI controller is used to regulate the gripping force. To validate the effectiveness of the developed microgripper and the control scheme, experimental investigations and the control of pick-and-release tasks are carried out. The results verify their effectiveness and demonstrate that the MFC microgripper and the control scheme are suitable use for precision micromanipulation and microassembly applications. Abstract:Micro-scale intelligent actuators capable of sensitive and accurate manipulation under external stimuli hold great promise in various fields including precision sensors and biomedical devices. Current microactuators, however, are often limited to multiple-step fabrication process and multi-materials. Here, a pH-triggered soft microactuator (<100 μm) with simple structure, one-step fabrication process and single material is proposed, which is composed of deformable hydrogel microstructures fabricated by an asymmetric femtosecond Bessel beam. To further explore the swelling-shrinking mechanism, the hydrogel porosity difference between expansion and contraction states is investigated. In addition, by introducing the dynamic holographic processing and splicing processing method, more complex responsive microstructures (S-shaped, C-shaped and tortile chiral structures) are rapidly fabricated, which exhibit tremendous expected deformation characteristics. Finally, as a proof of concept, a pH-responsive microgripper is fabricated for in situ capturing polystyrene (PS) particles and neural stem cells rapidly. This flexible, designable and one-step approach manufacturing of intelligent actuator provides a versatile platform for microobjects manipulation and drug delivery.

Abstract:Abstract Achieving multicapability in a single soft gripper for handling ultrasoft, ultrathin, and ultraheavy objects is challenging due to the tradeoff between compliance, strength, and precision. Here, combining experiments, theory, and simulation, we report utilizing angle-programmed tendril-like grasping trajectories for an ultragentle yet ultrastrong and ultraprecise gripper. The single gripper can delicately grasp fragile liquids with minimal contact pressure (0.05 kPa), lift objects 16,000 times its own weight, and precisely grasp ultrathin, flexible objects like 4-μm-thick sheets and 2-μm-diameter microfibers on flat surfaces, all with a high success rate. Its scalable and material-independent design allows for biodegradable noninvasive grippers made from natural leaves. Explicitly controlled trajectories facilitate its integration with robotic arms and prostheses for challenging tasks, including picking grapes, opening zippers, folding clothes, and turning pages. This work showcases soft grippers excelling in extreme scenarios with potential applications in agriculture, food processing, prosthesis, biomedicine, minimally invasive surgeries, and deep-sea exploration.

Abstract:Abstract Microgrippers, a branch of micro/nanorobots, refer to motile miniaturized machines that are of a size in the range of several to hundreds of micrometers. Compared with tethered grippers or other microscopic diagnostic and surgical equipment, untethered microgrippers play an indispensable role in biomedical applications because of their characteristics such as miniaturized size, dexterous shape tranformation, and controllable motion, which enables the microgrippers to enter hard‐to‐reach regions to execute specific medical tasks for disease diagnosis and treatment. To date, numerous medical microgrippers are developed, and their potential in cell manipulation, targeted drug delivery, biopsy, and minimally invasive surgery are explored. To achieve controlled locomotion and efficient target‐oriented actions, the materials, size, microarchitecture, and morphology of microgrippers shall be deliberately designed. In this review, the authors summarizes the latest progress in untethered micrometer‐scale grippers. The working mechanisms of shape‐morphing and actuation methods for effective movement are first introduced. Then, the design principle and state‐of‐the‐art fabrication techniques of microgrippers are discussed. Finally, their applications in the precise medicine are highlighted, followed by offering future perspectives for the development of untethered medical microgrippers.

Abstract:Precision manipulation tasks often require the use of compliant grippers to handle small and delicate objects accurately. This paper proposes a novel low-cost underactuated compliant gripper with integrated position and force sensors for precision manipulation. The gripper has a millimeter-scale grasping range and can adapt to objects of varying sizes and shapes. This is made possible by a flexure motion transmission mechanism that can undergo significant deformation, an underactuated seesaw flexure mechanism, and a pair of multifunctional jaws. Analytical models based on the pseudo-rigid-body approach are developed to analyze the kinematic, static , and dynamic characteristics of the gripper design. Finite element simulations are conducted to investigate the static and dynamic performance of the gripper. The gripper prototype is fabricated using 3D printing technology for a series of experimental tests. The results of these experiments demonstrate that the developed gripper has excellent motion tracking capabilities and high motion and force resolutions, enabling precise and accurate manipulation tasks. Furthermore, the gripper is capable of successfully grasping objects of different sizes and shapes through parallel and enveloping grasps.

Abstract:Programmable magnetic soft grippers are highly desirable for diverse applications in drug delivery, object manipulation and soft robotics. However, current magnetic programming grippers need to be driven by multiple physical fields, which are complicated to operate and single in motion. Here, we report a method for patterning hard magnetic microparticles in an elastomer matrix. Based on digital light processing (DLP), this method uses controlled reorientation of magnetic particles and selective exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light to encode magnetic particles in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) materials with arbitrary three‐dimensional (3D) orientation. The combination of vertical and horizontal magnetic fields can produce different forces, causing different deformation modes of the grippers. Flexible grippers can be fabricated from a single precursor in one process and produce various deformation and motion forms when a single magnetic field is applied. Moreover, the gripper has the advantages of simple manipulation, fast response and flexible movement, which is of great significance in the application of biological devices and soft robots. Abstract:The characteristics of a kind of comb-drive electrostatic actuated micro-gripper are tested.The test platform using a microscope-CCD-computer, the state information of the micro-gripper obtained by data acquisition and image processing, voltage-displacement characteristic curve is obtained and the mathematical equation is established.The analysis of the characteristic equation has shown the consistency and rationality of the theoretical design and the experimental results.The main factors that cause the difference between the theoretical design and the actual test performance are analyzed, and the design method and experimental results is obtained for the micro-gripper in the field of micro-assembly.

Abstract:The development of microgrippers requires accurate control of force and position for the grasping mechanisms in micromanipulation. This controllability ensures the safe transfer of sensitive micro-objects, such as living cells. The design of microgrippers is often limited by the dimensions and adaptability of the micro-objects being manipulated. Therefore, microgrippers should be customized for each micro-object. Additionally, complex sensor mechanisms are required to control the gripping force. This study introduces a novel design of a four-arm MEMS electrothermal microgripper intended for versatile micromanipulation purposes. The microgripper design procedure is compatible with a list of constraints, including biological and microfabrication constraints. The jaw form is designed to manipulate micro-objects with a wide range of dimensions (1 to 360μm). Furthermore, a novel approach is presented here to control the force threshold of gripping without a sensor during manipulation. The proposed solution involves using structure stiffening to control the force and prevent damage to micro-objects. GA and analytical models (transient behaviour of structure) are used to satisfy the long list of constraints. The device is fabricated through UV-LIGA, utilizing nickel and copper as the structural and sacrificial layer. The experimental and simulation results demonstrate that the microgripper can achieve a 60μm jaw displacement at a voltage of 0.329V. The gripping arms can provide a force of 15 to 450μN for the handling of micro-objects. The maximum gripper temperature of 98oC makes it suitable for biological applications. The innovative form and systematic design of the microgripper enable its adaptability for various applications.

Abstract:There is a continuing need to select biological cells from infected tissues for single cell proteomics and genetic research, for microinjection in drug discovery etc. All of these rely on miniaturized microgrippers. We have developed two types of microgrippers. Planar microtweezers were made from a 4 mu m thick electroplated Ni, using an inplane electrothermal actuation mechanism, while the normally closed microcages consist of a polymer/Al/diamond like carbon trilayer structure. Both of these demonstrated the capability of capturing a micro-object.
Polymer Micro-Grippers with an Integrated Force Sensor for Biological Manipulation

Abstract:The development of a novel micro-system integrating SU-8 polymer micro-grippers with a tensile force sensor for handling and characterizing the mechanical properties of delicate biological materials, such as fibrils, is presented. The micro-grippers are actuated by the electro-thermal effect and have gripping forces comparable to the common 'hot-and-cold-arm' grippers. A robust finite element model was developed to investigate system performance and validated experimentally. A new micro-mechanical calibration method using a piezoelectric manipulator with a micro-force measurement system was successfully applied to test the structure. Both FEA simulation and micro-mechanical testing results indicated that the system could fulfil the requirements for micro-object manipulation within a biological environment.

Abstract:Soft robotic grippers have gained considerable attention owing to their highly compliant, adaptive, and safe characteristics in a large variety of scenes, especially involving human-machine interactions. However, the low-stiffness nature of the soft material and the multi-finger gripping mechanism make soft grasping systems suffer in applications requiring relatively high load capacity and broad grasping adaptability. Despite extensive efforts to develop soft grippers with tunable stiffness by constructing smart materials and structures, the resultant load capacity is often compromised by sacrificing working efficiency or surface adaptability. In this work, we report a paradigm to design a versatile, high-load (>2 kg), and fast-response (<1 s) pneumatic soft gripper by strengthening the contact interface via bio-inspired controllable adhesion. A mushroom-shaped micropatterned dry adhesive surface is integrated with a soft pneumatic bidirectionally bendable actuator via a vacuum-assisted equal load-sharing design. This gripper extends the adaptable object diameter from 15 mm to infinity and significantly increases the load capacity to over 2 kg without compromising the original compliance. The multifunctional grasping modes and high load capacity are successfully demonstrated by grasping objects with diverse material components, various surface shapes.
