Abstract:Background:Vigilance refers to the behavior of animals scanning their surroundings with a main purpose of antipredation.Whether vigilance can serve the function of anti-predation depends on its unpredictability,meaning instantaneous randomness,sequential randomness,and independence,the three assumptions from Pulliam model（J Theor Biol 38:419,1973）.Here we tested two of these three assumptions in reproductive Black-necked Cranes（Grus nigricollis） in Tibetan Plateau:instantaneous randomness and sequential randomness.Methods:Observations were carried out in July and September of 2014,July and August in 2017 in Selincuo National Nature Reserve,Tibet,with the help of focal sampling method.For instantaneous randomness,we used Kolmogorov–Smirnov test for its negative exponential distribution;for sequential randomness,we used Run test,correlation analysis,and generalized linear model to see if an inter-scan and its previous scan were correlated.Results:Not similar to some recent studies,we did not find a significant predictable vigilance in this crane.Most inter-scan intervals（86/100,86.0%） passed negative exponential distribution test,meaning vigilance sequences with instantaneous randomness;most inter-scan intervals（91/100,91.0%） passed sequential random test,showing vigilance sequences were random organized.Conclusion:Our results suggest that keeping a vigilance pattern with unpredictability is beneficial to the survival of the Black-necked Cranes,which are facing with both cruel natural environments and high predation risks.
Vigilance Synchronization of Wintering Black-Necked Crane (grus Nigricollis) Families in Tibet

Abstract:Most previous studies of animal vigilance behavior have been based on Pulliam's classical model,which emphasizes that individuals' vigilance occurs independently and is,therefore,unaffected by the vigilant state of other individuals in the same group.However,recent theoretical and empirical studies have challenged this model and have reported that,depending on the degree of vigilance synchronization,the collective vigilance can be either imitation-based synchronized vigilance or coordinated vigilance that avoids overlapping bouts.In the present study,we observed the vigilance behavior of wintering black-necked crane (Grus nigricollis) families in the Yarlung Zangbo River Nature Reserve.The black-necked crane is a globally endangered species that lives exclusively in the Tibetan Plateau.We captured videos in the field and then scanned 30-s intervals of the footage to record individual and collective vigilance behavior.Further,we used Student's t-test to determine the effects of age and predation vulnerability at the individual level.The results indicated that juveniles spent significantly less time in vigilance than their parents,mainly owing to lack of vigilance and feeding experience,which necessitates juveniles to spend more time feeding to meet their energetic and developmental requirements.However,the presence of juveniles in family groups had no effect on the vigilance of adult cranes,and according to one-way ANOVA,there was no difference in the collective vigilance of different types of black-necked crane family groups.Meanwhile,a paired t-test,which was used to compare the observed and predicted collective vigilance values in order to determine the vigilance synchronization of wintering black-necked cranes,indicated that there was no synchronization tendency.The difference between the predicted and observed values was not significant between adult cranes,all family members,or adults and juveniles.Vigilance patterns are adaptive behaviors of animals in particular environments.In the wintering habitat of black-necked cranes,there is no targeting predator,and the black-necked cranes are generally protected as a symbol of auspiciousness in the Tibetan area.Although black-necked cranes that forage in farmland are inevitably disturbed by humans,the degree of interference and predation risk is insufficient to induce high-intensity vigilance synchronization that mainly function for reducing predator risk.In addition,when food availability becomes a key factor for survival,energy acquisition takes precedence over safety assurance,and as a result,the need for synchronized vigilance is reduced.Studying vigilance synchronization can reveal the vigilance pattern of black-necked cranes in the field and provide meaningful information for their management and conservation.

Abstract:To explore factors effects of color cue and sound cue,experiments were made to simulate Mackworth' clock test monitoring radar task in a computer program.The methods of random block design and an average rate of about one-thirtieth of the signal were adopted in the experiment.The results indicated that the existence of performance degrading was detected in the two-hour normal vigilance task,and the effects of sound cue or color cue or sound and color cue effects on the vigilance performances were found to be remarkable.Thus sound cue or color cue or sound and color cue can be used to enhance vigilance performances.

Abstract:Vigilance is a behavior in birds that is used to detect predators and monitor rivals, and it can be affected by several environmental and social factors, including group size. Here, Black-necked Cranes (Grits nigricollis) were observed in winter in the Yarlung Zangbo Nature Reserve, Tibet, China, to examine the effect of group size on vigilance behavior at both the individual and group levels. At the individual level, individual Black-necked Cranes in large social groups spent less time in vigilant behavior than when in small family groups. At the social group level, the proportion of vigilant individuals decreased, while the proportion of intervals that at least one individual was vigilant increased, with increasing group size. There was a significant group size effect on vigilance behavior in wintering Black-necked Cranes at both of these levels.

Abstract:Vigilance is important for anti-predation, and different animals adopt different vigilance strategies. Instantaneous and sequential randomness in vigilance behavior are two main principles for the classic Pulliam model (1973). Given this context, we studied the vigilance behaviors in two wild cloven-hoofed animals, the Tibetan antelope (Pantholops hodgsonii) and the Tibetan gazelle (Procapra picticaudata) on Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, to explore if the two randomness principles work across species. The results showed that the distribution of inter-scan intervals of both Tibetan antelope and Tibetan gazelle followed the negative exponential distribution; inter-scans of both Tibetan antelope and Tibetan gazelle were unrelated with their previous scan, and most sequences of inter-scan intervals could be considered as random organized or unpredictable. In conclusion, the vigilance patterns of Tibetan antelope and Tibetan gazelle followed instantaneous randomness and sequential randomness of Pulliam model. A random vigilance strategy might be the best choice for Tibetan ungulates, and how to distinguish the social vigilance from anti-predator vigilance is an important issue for future research.

Abstract:Much of the previous research on anti-predation vigilance in groups has assumed independent scanning for threats among group members. Alternative patterns that are based on monitoring the vigilance levels of companions can also be adaptive. Coordination of vigilance, in which foragers avoid scanning at the same time as others, should decrease the odds that no group member is alert. Synchronisation of vigilance implies that individuals are more likely to be vigilant when companions are already vigilant. While synchronisation will increase the odds that no one is vigilant, it may allow a better assessment of potential threats. We investigated temporal sequences of vigilance in family flocks consisting of two parents and at most two juveniles in two species of cranes in coastal China. We established whether the observed probability that at least one parent is alert was greater (coordination) or lower (synchronisation) than that predicted under the null hypothesis of independent vigilance. We documented coordination of vigilance in common cranes (Grus grus) foraging in an area with high potential for disturbance by people. We documented synchronisation of vigilance in red-crowned cranes (Grus japonensis) in the less but not in the more disturbed area. Coordination in small flocks leads to high collective vigilance but low foraging rates that may not be suitable in areas with low disturbance. We also argue that synchronisation should break down in areas with high disturbance because periods with low vigilance are riskier. Results highlight the view that temporal patterns of vigilance can take many forms depending on ecological factors.

Abstract:Sequences of vigilance behaviour were obtained for preening crested terns, Sterna bergii. Paired comparisons were made between the vigilance of individuals before and after flock size changes. As predicted, individuals responded to flock size increases by increasing their inter-scan intervals (reducing vigilance), and to flock size decreases by decreasing inter-scan intervals. Scan durations did not vary with flock size. However, arrivals and departures of birds were immediately followed by long scans. The study represents a more powerful test of flock size effects than has previously been presented in correlational studies.

Abstract:While foraging, many animals alternate between feeding and scanning. Spectral analyses of sequences of successive scan and inter-scan durations suggest the existence of a significant non-random, periodic component in the scanning dynamics of some birds. Evidence for cyclic vigilance remains controversial, however. Here data obtained from a purple sandpiper,Calidris maritima, two Barbary doves,Streptopelia risoria, and two choughs,Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocoraxwere re-analysed by making use of statistical methods from non-linear dynamics. Predictability portraits obtained by subjecting the data to non-linear forecasting support the view that the vigilant behaviour of the two choughs is periodic with superimposed noise. By contrast, the hypothesis of periodic scanning is rejected for the sandpiper and doves, as well as that of pure randomness. Instead, the vigilant behaviour of the sandpiper and doves bears the signature of deterministic chaos: high, short-term, decaying predictability of scan and inter-scan durations. The sequential structure of the data sets makes them well suited for reliable computation of the rate at which predictability declines; results support the conclusion of chaotic patterns. Finally, a mathematical model is developed to investigate some possible functional benefits of periodicity and chaos in vigilant behaviour, compared with random scanning, in terms of the optimization of corporate vigilance of birds foraging in flocks. If individual vigilance is chaotic, then even loose coordination, based on predictions only one foraging bout ahead, can dramatically reduce individual predictability and enhance the level of group surveillance.

Abstract:Vigilance is used to detect predators and monitor rivals. We studied red-crowned cranes (Grus japonensis) in Yancheng Biosphere Reserve, China, to examine changes in the allocation of time to vigilance as a function of flock size in areas with different levels of human disturbance. There was low level of human activity in the core area of the reserve whereas more human activity occurred in the buffer zone. Vigilance decreased linearly with flock size but to significantly different extent in the two areas, with a more pronounced decrease in the more disturbed area. In smaller crane flocks, vigilance was higher in the more disturbed area. Vigilance also varied in a non-linear fashion with flock size first decreasing and then increasing in larger flocks. Increase in vigilance in larger flocks was accompanied by an increase in fighting suggesting that vigilance in large flocks was aimed partly at monitoring rivals. The effect of human disturbance on vigilance suggests that less time is available for foraging in more disturbed areas. Nevertheless, moving to less disturbed areas may not be an option for the cranes given the increase in vigilance that would probably occur in areas with more cranes.

Abstract:Vigilance is defined as the ability to maintain attention for prolonged periods of time. In order to explore the variation of brain vigilance in work process, we designed addition and subtraction experiment with numbers of three digits to induce the vigilance to change, combined it with psychomotor vigilance task (PVT) to measure this process of electroencephalogram (EEG), extracted and analyzed permutation entropy (PE) of 11 cases of subjects' EEG and made a brief comparison with nonlinear parameter sample entropy (SE). The experimental results showed that: PE could well reflect the dynamic changes of EEG when vigilance decreases, and has advantages of fast arithmetic speed, high noise immunity, and low requirements for EEG length. This can be used as a measure of the brain vigilance indicators.

Abstract:White-lipped deer (Cervus albirostris),which is categorized as Class Ⅰ nationally protected wildlife,is an endemic species to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and its adjacent regions.With the method of focal sampling,the vigilance behavior of C.albirostris during the breeding season (September and October,2016) in Sichuan Chaqingsongduo White-lipped Deer National Nature Reserve were observed to investigate the determinants of individual vigilance and to verify whether the vigilance intervals are randomly distributed according to the assumptions of Pulliam's vigilance model.It was found that age and sex had a significant effect on individual vigilance behavior;fawns were more vigilant than adults,and females were more vigilant than males.However,we did not find any significant effect of human disturbance and within-group spatial position on the vigilance behavior of C.albirostris.Most of the vigilance intervals (93.4％) were randomly distributed,indicating that vigilance patterns of C.albirostris support the assumption of sequential randomness of Pulliam's model.
Gazing Strategies among Sentinels of a Cooperative Breeder Are Repeatable but Unrelated to Survival

Abstract:Vigilance is a common behavioural adaptation to increase the chances of detecting predators before it is too late to escape. Behavioural traits are often repeatable among individuals over the long term, suggesting differences in personality. Earlier studies have documented individual consistency in the time allocated to vigilance. However, little is known about individual consistency in the ways vigilance is achieved from one moment to another and whether different patterns of vigilance among individuals are associated with survival. We aimed to determine whether sentinels of a cooperative breeder showed individual consistency in their vigilance and if individual variation was related to annual survival. During sentinel bouts from vantage points, Florida scrub-jays (Aphelocoma coerulescens) turn their heads from side to side to monitor their surroundings. Over three field seasons, we found that the head-turning frequency was repeatable in breeders but not in juveniles or non-breeding helpers. The moderate repeatability in breeders was not related to survival. Our results suggest that the head-turning frequency in sentinels of the Florida scrub-jay is repeatable in breeders but not in less experienced juveniles or helpers and, therefore, likely becomes more repeatable as individuals age. The assumption that individual variation in vigilance is related to survival was unsupported in our study and requires further study.

Abstract:The end-spurt effect, where performance declines with time-on-task and then increases toward the end of a task, has garnered little attention in the vigilance literature. Researchers have suggested the performance enhancement is due to increased motivation or arousal with knowledge of the end of the vigil. However, recent examination of neural signature patterns during a simultaneous discrimination task, where task length was unknown, provided preliminary support that the end-spurt reflects pacing of resources. The current effort expands this previous work to an additional simultaneous task and to a successive discrimination task across two sessions, one where task length was not known and one where task length was known. Twenty-eight (Study 1) and a separate 24 (Study 2) participants completed a Simultaneous Radar task (Study 1) in one session and Simultaneous and Successive Lines tasks (Study 2) across two sessions while neural data was collected. Several event-related potentials exhibited non-monotonic patterns during the vigilance tasks, in some cases reflecting end-spurt patterns, but more commonly reflecting higher-order polynomial patterns. These patterns were more prevalent in anterior regions as opposed to posterior regions. Of note, the N1 anterior exhibited consistent general patterns across all the vigilance tasks and across sessions. Importantly, even when participants had knowledge of session length, some ERPs still exhibited higher-order polynomial trends, suggesting pacing rather than an end-spurt from motivation or arousal as the vigil ends. These insights can help inform predictive modeling of vigilance performance and the implementation of mitigation efforts to allay the vigilance decrement.
The Group Size Effect and Synchronization of Vigilance in the Tibetan Wild Ass

Abstract:Vigilance behavior is considered as an effective strategy for prey species to detect predators. An individual benefits from living in a group by reducing the time spent being vigilant without affecting the probability of detecting a predator. However, the mechanism producing a decrease in vigilance with increasing group size is unclear. Many models of vigilance assume that group members scan independently of one another. Yet in recent studies, the other 2 patterns of vigilance, coordination and synchronization, were reported in some species. In 2 summers (2018 and 2019), we studied the group-size effect on vigilance and foraging of Tibetan wild ass in Chang Tang Nature Reserve of Tibet. We also tested whether individuals scan the environment independently, tend to coordinate their scans, or tend to synchronize their vigilance. The results showed that individuals decreased the time spent on vigilance with increasing group size, while increased the time spent foraging. Group members scanned the environment at the same time more frequently and there was a positive correlation between group members' behaviors, indicating that Tibetan wild asses tend to synchronize their vigilance.

Abstract:The study of antipredator vigilance underwent a rapid and relatively recent synthesis 15-20 years ago. During the rise of behavioral ecology and sociobiology, researchers began to measure how often animals looked up from feeding. Subsequently, the field of vigilance crystallized quickly around a few striking results and an elegant theory. The convenient mathematical assumptions of this original theory continue to channel researchers' attentions today. Although data tend to match these assumptions - flock members scan independently, vigilance sequences are essentially unpredictable, and interscan intervals are highly variable - the assumptions themselves are difficult to justify. Some of our basic ideas about vigilance require detailed re-examination.

Observation on Behavior of Red-crowned Crane in Captivity

Abstract:Behavior of two pairs of the red crowned crane in captivity was observed from March 2005 to February 2006 in Harbin North Forestry Zoo,by scan and focal methods and data of observation were analyzed with one-way ANOVA.In breeding season, feeding,walking and body care were the main types of behaviors,over 70% of the time budget;no differences existed between males and females(P＞5%).In non-breeding season,the time budget of different behaviors were feeding(46.65%),watching (18.92%),body care(14.72%),walking(12.30%)and resting(7.40%).The time budget of the reproductive behavior was antiphonal song 6.09%,jumping 5.15%,mating 4.84%,resting 4.65%,precaution 10.44% and hatching 68.83%.Time on nesting of females was significantly more than that of males(P=0.02＜5%),while time on precaution of males was significantly more than that of females(P=0.006＜1%).In early breeding season,monthly differences of antiphonal song,jumping nesting and mating were significant(P＜5%),but not for precaution(P＞5%).Generally,behavior of the cranes in captivity displayed a circadian rhythm in the time.

Abstract:In early-warning radar surveillance environment, sequential procedures are preferred to detect the targets, for they promise a reduction in the time needed to take a decision. In this paper, a sequential detection algorithm is concerned and the interplay between the parameter dsnr and the system performance is mainly discussed. Numerical results have shown that sequential detector can lead a great reduction in the average-sample-number (ASN) especially in high SNR. In order to get a proper system performance, a trade off should be made between the ASN and detection performance when choosing the parameter dsnr.
When to Return to Normal? Temporal Dynamics of Vigilance in Four Situations

Abstract:Vigilance is an important behaviour to monitor the environment from detecting predators to tracking conspecifics. However, little is known about how vigilance changes over time either without disturbance (vigilance decrement) or after a change occurred. The time course of vigilance can indicate how animals perceive a situation and the potential mechanism used to deal with it. I investigated the time course of vigilance in Gouldian Finches in four situations (familiar environment, two changed environments–novel object at a neutral location (exploration trial) or above the feeder (neophobia trial), novel environment). The frequency of head movements was assessed in four consecutive 15-min blocks in same sex pairs with a high frequency generally seen as indicative of high vigilance. Vigilance decreased over time in the familiar situation indicating vigilance decrement with a similar time course in the exploration trial. Vigilance was consistently high in the neophobia trial and only returned to normal in the last block. Finally, vigilance plummeted in the novel environment and did not return to normal within an hour. Results suggest that perceived threats affected vigilance and that information gathering reduced uncertainty allowing vigilance to return to normal levels but with different time courses depending on the situation.

Abstract:Abstract A continuous balance between costs and benefits dictates individual vigilance and foraging dynamics. In group-living animals, understanding the resulting trade-off is often complicated by multiple confounding effects. Vigilance and foraging levels may be the result of intrinsic (e.g., body size, trophic ecology, migratory phenology) and extrinsic (e.g., flock size, edge effect, group dynamism) factors, potentially differing between species, individuals, and contexts. We explored this idea by investigating intrinsic and extrinsic factors influencing vigilance and foraging behavior of two sympatric gregarious bird species that differ markedly in body size and foraging strategies (Greylag Goose Anser anser and Common Crane Grus grus), during their non-breeding period. Interspecific differences were detected in activity allocation and in response to group-related variables. For both species, time spent in vigilance decreased with increasing flock size and with increasing distance from the edge of the group. While cranes allocated the resulting time to foraging, the same did not occur in geese. Changes in individual position in the group (i.e., peripheral vs. central or vice versa) elicited a prompt behavioral change (i.e., vigilance vs. foraging or other activity). Temporal changes in activity budgets were reported for geese but not for cranes, with a decrease of vigilance and an increase of foraging as winter progressed. Results allowed to disentangle the role of multifactorial determinants of vigilance and foraging, in turn increasing our understanding of underlying forces driving the evolution of behavioral traits and of group-living.

Abstract:Vigilance behavior is affected by many factors including foraging mode and group pattern which we attempted to understand through a case study of mallard Anas platyrhynchos and black-winged stilt Himantopus himantopus in the Hengshui Lake National Nature Reserve, China. Mallard, a swimming bird, forages in irregular and loose circular groups in open water and its foraging mode (with its head underwater looking for food) does not allow for simultaneous monitoring of potential threats above the water surface, which is why its foraging is called “blind period of foraging”. In contrast, black-winged stilt is a wading bird and forages along riversides in long linear foraging groups.
