Abstract:As a primary constituent of soft rocks, kaolinite plays an important role in large deformations of underground structures, which usually leads to serious safety risks. This paper investigates the deformation and failure processes of kaolinite under tension using molecular dynamics simulations. Based on the atomistic scale of these deformation and failure processes and their stressstrain curves, Young’s moduli and strengths in three crystal directions and the surface energy of the(001) plane were obtained,which were consistent with theoretical predictions. The number of broken bonds and their corresponding broken sequences were determined. The results of our study indicated that as more bonds break during tension, the initiation of crack led to a sharp decrease in stress. We also explored the influence of temperature on the mechanical properties of kaolinite, which indicated that as temperature increased, the tensile strength and Young’s modulus decreased.
Diffusive, Displacive Deformations and Local Phase Transformation Govern the Mechanics of Layered Crystals: The Case Study of Tobermorite

Abstract:Understanding the deformation mechanisms underlying the mechanical behavior of materials is the key to fundamental and engineering advances in materials' performance. Herein, we focus on crystalline calcium-silicate-hydrates (C-S-H) as a model system with applications in cementitious materials, bone-tissue engineering, drug delivery and refractory materials, and use molecular dynamics simulation to investigate its loading geometry dependent mechanical properties. By comparing various conventional (e.g. shear, compression and tension) and nano-indentation loading geometries, our findings demonstrate that the former loading leads to size-independent mechanical properties while the latter results in size-dependent mechanical properties at the nanometer scales. We found three key mechanisms govern the deformation and thus mechanics of the layered C-S-H: diffusive-controlled and displacive-controlled deformation mechanisms, and strain gradient with local phase transformations. Together, these elaborately classified mechanisms provide deep fundamental understanding and new insights on the relationship between the macro-scale mechanical properties and underlying molecular deformations, providing new opportunities to control and tune the mechanics of layered crystals and other complex materials such as glassy C-S-H, natural composite structures, and manmade laminated structures.
Influence of initial tensile stress on mechanical properties of calcium silicate hydrate under various strain rates by molecular dynamics simulation

Abstract:Molecular dynamics (MD) was introduced to explore mechanical properties of calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) under different initial tensile stress levels and strain rates. It shows the strain rates have obvious enhancement on the basic mechanical parameters. The dynamic tensile strength will not decrease until the initial tensile stress level reaches about 76%.The enhancement mechanisms are proclaimed by the interaction potential function and the development of chemical bonds. The constitutive model for C-S-H considering the initial tensile stress levels is proposed. Our observations can provide atomic insights into the influence of loading history on the dynamic tensile strength of cement-based materials.

Abstract:The molecular-scale mechanical properties of calcium silicate hydrates are crucial to the macro performance of cementitious materials, while achieving coincidence between accuracy and efficiency in computational simulations still remains a challenge. This study utilizes a deep-learning potential, specifically developed for calcium silicate hydrates based on artificial neural network, to achieve molecular dynamics simulations with accuracy comparable to first-principle methods. With this potential, the elastic properties and uniaxial mechanical behaviors are explored, wherein the anisotropy and impact mechanism of calcium ratios are analyzed. The results add to evidence that the deep-learning potential possess a higher accuracy than common force fields. The anisotropy of elastic modulus is mainly attributed to different atomic interactions in various directions, while the anisotropy of strength is additionally affected by the form of failure. This study may advance the accurate molecular-scale simulation and deepen the understanding of the strength source and cohesion mechanism of cement-based materials.

Abstract:Calcium silicate hydrate Jennite is a molecular structure commonly accepted as a representation of the complex calcium silicate hydrate gel formed during the hydration of typical Portland cement. In this paper, the behavior of nanoscale calcium silicate hydrate Jennite under shear deformation was investigated using molecular dynamics simulations. Computational samples representing the nanoscale structure of calcium silicate hydrate Jennite were subjected to shear deformation in order to investigate not only their mechanical properties but also their deformation behavior. The simulation results indicated that the nanoscale calcium silicate hydrate Jennite under shear deformation displays a linear elastic behavior up to shear stress of approximately 1.0 GPa, and shear deformation of about 0.08 radians, after which point yielding and plastic deformation occurs. The shear modulus determined from the simulations was 11.2 ± 0.7 GPa. The deformation-induced displacements in molecular structures were analyzed dividing the system in regions representing calcium oxide layers. The displacement/deformation of the layers of calcium oxide forming the structure of nanoscale calcium silicate hydrate Jennite was analyzed. The non-linear stress–strain behavior in the molecular structure was attributed to a non-linear increase in the displacement due to sliding of the calcium oxide layers on top of each other with higher shearing. These results support the idea that by controlling the chemical reactions, the tailored morphologies can be used to increase the interlinking between the calcium oxide layers, thus minimizing the shearing of the layers and leading to molecular structures that can withstand larger deformation and have improved failure behavior.

Abstract:Despite decades of studies of calcium-silicate-hydrate (C-S-H), the structurally complex binder phase of concrete, the interplay between chemical composition and density remains essentially unexplored. Together these characteristics of C-S-H define and modulate the physical and mechanical properties of this "liquid stone" gel phase. With the recent determination of the calcium/silicon (C/S = 1.7) ratio and the density of the C-S-H particle (2.6 g/cm(3)) by neutron scattering measurements, there is new urgency to the challenge of explaining these essential properties. Here we propose a molecular model of C-S-H based on a bottom-up atomistic simulation approach that considers only the chemical specificity of the system as the overriding constraint. By allowing for short silica chains distributed as monomers, dimers, and pentamers, this C-S-H archetype of a molecular description of interacting CaO, SiO2, and H2O units provides not only realistic values of the C/S ratio and the density computed by grand canonical Monte Carlo simulation of water adsorption at 300 K. The model, with a chemical composition of (CaO)(1.65)(SiO2)(H2O)(1.75), also predicts other essential structural features and fundamental physical properties amenable to experimental validation, which suggest that the C-S-H gel structure includes both glass-like short-range order and crystalline features of the mineral tobermorite. Additionally, we probe the mechanical stiffness, strength, and hydrolytic shear response of our molecular model, as compared to experimentally measured properties of C-S-H. The latter results illustrate the prospect of treating cement on equal footing with metals and ceramics in the current application of mechanism-based models and multiscale simulations to study inelastic deformation and cracking.

Abstract:Exploring and modifying the C-S-H structure at a micro-nano level is an effective solution to improve the performance of Portland cement. Compared with organics inserting C-S-H, the research on the performance of a polymer-binding C-S-H structure from nanoscale to macroscale is limited. In this work, the mechanical properties of a modified C-S-H, using hydroxyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as the binders, are evaluated. The PDMS-modified C-S-H structures are introduced into macro-defect-free cement to obtain stress-strain curves changes at a macro scale. The AFM-FM was adopted to measure the morphology and elastic modulus of C-S-H at a nano scale. The molecular dynamics (MD) simulation was performed to assess the toughness, tensile properties, and failure mechanism. The results show that the PDMS-modified C-S-H powders change the break process and enhance ductility of MDF cement. The elastic modulus of PDMS-modified C-S-H is lower than pure C-S-H. When PDMS molecules are located between the stacking crystal units, it can enhance the toughness of C-S-H aggregates. The PDMS-modified C-S-H stacking structure has better plasticity, and its tensile strains are higher than the pure C-S-H. PDMS molecules hinder the initial crack expansion, leading to the branching of the initial crack. In addition, the measurement of AFM-FM can identify and obtain the mechanical properties of basic units of C-S-H. This paper enhances the understanding of cement strength sources and modification methods.

Abstract:Fully understanding the fracture behavior of concrete is a challenging work since concrete is a complex multiscale composite material with a heterogeneous structure at different length scales ranging from nanoscale to macroscale. A new multiscale model framework was proposed in the present study to explore the mechanical properties, including Young's modulus E and ultimate tensile strength UTS , and fracture behavior of calcium-silicate-hydrate (C-S-H) from the nanoscale to mesoscale. The nanoscale C-S-H globule models were built and simulated via molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and then the obtained mechanical properties were employed as the input parameters for the mesoscale Peridynamics (PD) simulations to acquire the E , UTS , and fracture behavior of C-S-H gel. The results reveal that at nanoscale, the mechanical performance of C-S-H is anisotropic: As the size of C-S-H model increases, the E and UTS of C-S-H decrease because the extension of crack in a larger C-S-H model will release more stored energy. At mesoscale as the packing fraction φ increases, the E and UTS of C-S-H gel increase. The resulted E and UTS are in line with former simulations and experimental data implying the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed multiscale model.

Abstract:A major concern in the modern cement industry is considering how to minimize the CO2 footprint. Thus, cements based on belite, an impure clinker mineral (CaO)2SiO2 (C2S in cement chemistry notation), which forms at lower temperatures, is a promising solution to develop eco-efficient and sustainable cement-based materials, used in enormous quantities. The slow reactivity of belite plays a critical role, but the dissolution mechanisms and kinetic rates at the atomistic scale are not known completely yet. This work aims to understand the dissolution behavior of different facets of β-C2S providing missing input data and an upscaling modeling approach to connect the atomistic scale to the sub-micro scale. First, a combined ReaxFF and metadynamics-based molecular dynamic approach are applied to compute the atomistic forward reaction rates (RD) of calcium (Ca) and silicate species of (100) facet of β-C2S considering the influence of crystal facets and crystal defects. To minimize the huge number of atomistic events possibilities, a generalized approach is proposed, based on the systematic removal of nearest neighbors' crystal sites. This enables us to tabulate data on the forward reaction rates of most important atomistic scenarios, which are needed as input parameters to implement the Kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) computational upscaling approach. The reason for the higher reactivity of the (100) facet compared to the (010) is explained.

Abstract:Potential of cement-based materials for energy harvesting is encoded in their elusive mesoporous structure, and understanding the sub-micron structure of calcium silicate hydrate (C–S–H), a major binding phase of cement, is an important yet challenging task. Nanoscale C–S–H is ductile, while macroscopic performance is brittle, suggesting a gap in the transition of material properties from the nano-to the macro-scale, and a chance in finetuning the submicron (∼100 nm) structure to effectively deliver the atomistic properties to the bulk performance. The refined sub-micron structure of C–S–H can enhance the strength and modulus of concrete, thus providing a base material with better mechanical properties and durability. Here, two critical structural features of C–S–H, including agglomeration of globules and stacking of layers, are modeled by spherical and oblate ellipsoidal units, respectively. Coarse-grained modeling and peridynamics simulations find that the packing of ellipsoidal units is better than that of spherical units, from the perspectives of size distribution, morphology, fractality of pores and tensile properties . The analyses on the mesoporous structure shows that the ellipsoid-packing is more homogeneous than the sphere-packing model, and it yields a refined structure with enhancement in tensile modulus and strength. The submicron finetuning enhancement of C–S–H can be realized through different physical and chemical approaches, like inducing lateral growth of silicate chains by chemical additives, scaffolding materials, and conditioned hydration. This coarse-grained simulation work gives novel insights and fundamental strategies for toughening the cement matrix through delivering ductile nanoscale performance of C–S–H to macroscale cementitious materials, and provides superior performance for concrete in existing and new structures.

Abstract:Many researches have been conducted to study the properties of calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) using numerical modeling. However, there still exists a large gap between the mechanical characteristics of C-S-H. A new composite C-S-Hs model is proposed to more realistically represent the layered feature in this paper. Compared with regularly-arranged C-S-Hs model, larger interlayer space provides sufficient space for water adsorption and the arrangement of C-S-H cells. The random arrangement of multiple C-S-H cells and additional water molecule adsorption have a significant impact on the composite C-S-Hs system. Uniaxial tension tests with different strain rates are utilized to investigate the mechanical properties of the composite C-S-Hs model compared with those of regularly arranged C-S-H cells. The simulation results demonstrate that the mechanical properties of the composite C-S-Hs model are closer to those of cementitious materials on the macroscopic scale. The simulation results highlight the impact of strain rate and interlayer spacing on the characteristics of the multiple C-S-Hs model. The proposed composite C-S-Hs model provides a more reasonable procedure for molecular dynamics simulation of C-S-H.

Abstract:Calcium-Silicate-Hydrate (C-S-H) is the primary binding phase in cement and plays a crucial role in lifecycle performance of concrete. Understanding its multiscale mechanical properties is essential for optimizing its performance. In this study, we employed atomic force microscopy (AFM), nanoindentation and oedometric test to characterize multi-scale mechanical behaviours of C-S-H with different chemical composition and microstructure. Moreover, a calculation framework is used to bridge inter-scale gaps. Our results reveal the complex hierarchical features of C-S-H and its impact on mechanical properties including elastic, plastic, and viscous responses. We also identify the critical role of chemical composition including calcium-to-silica ratio and water content on the observed mechanical behaviours. Additionally, our multiscale model provides a valuable tool for rational design of C-S-H-based materials with tailored mechanical properties at less material cost.

A phase field model for deformation-induced amorphization

Abstract:Amorphization by severe plastic deformation has been observed in various crystalline materials. However, developing a quantitative and comprehensive theory for strain-induced amorphization remains challenging due to the complex nature of microstructural evolutions and deformation mechanisms. We propose a phase field model coupled with elastic-plastic theory to study the strain-induced amorphization in nanocrystalline materials. The plastic behaviors of crystalline phases and amorphous phases are coupled with phase evolutions by finite strain theory through the strain energy. This coupled model enables to quantitatively explore the effects of various defects on formation of amorphous phases such as shear bands. Simulations using our model predict that amorphous nucleation follows the martensitic transformation, and occurs primarily within localized regions of high stress, including shear bands. Our results also indicate an increase in the critical plastic strain for amorphization as the grain size increases. These findings align well with experimental results, validating the proposed model in capturing key features of deformation-induced amorphization. Our work provides valuable insights into deformation-induced amorphization and serves as a basis for developing more quantitative models with complex microscopic mechanisms.

Abstract:Reactive molecular dynamics simulations are employed to explore the structural characteristics and tensile properties of calcium silicate hydrate (C–S–H) subjected to temperatures from 50 K to 700 K and strain rates from 0.008ps−1 to 0.8ps−1. The rising temperatures destroy the H-bond network, leading to obvious enlargement along the interlayer direction and the layered structural characteristics convert into staggered characteristics. The mechanical properties linearly decrease with an increase in temperatures and show a nonlinearly decrease with the higher strain rates. Furthermore, the strain rate has a stronger influence on the tensile strength at a higher temperature than that at a lower temperature. The effect of strain rates at various temperatures have the same pattern, which is consistent with the experiment results. The results in this paper provide the molecular-level views about the structure evolutions and mechanical behaviours of cement-based materials at low temperatures to high temperatures environments and different strain rates.

Abstract:Geopolymer concrete offers superior mechanical properties and microstructure, yet micro-level compressive properties and structural evolutions remain insufficiently understood. This study employed molecular dynamics to simulate the uniaxial compressions of the sodium aluminosilicate hydrate (N-A-S-H) under UCZ, BCZ, and TCZ (z-axial compressions with zero, one, and two dimensions restrictions, respectively) conditions at 263 K, 300 K, and 800 K. The results provided valuable insights linking mechanical behavior with structural properties. Stress fluctuations in the yield stage were attributed to the continuous formation and fracture of Al-O-H bonds during micro-molecule processes. In the later compression stages, the rapid increase in Si-O-H groups suggested that water molecules equally attacked Al and Si tetrahedra due to limited voids. Under UCZ and BCZ conditions, slight bond contraction occurred, with the main structural resistance arising from bond angle bending within the skeleton. In contrast, TCZ experienced notable changes in both bond lengths and bond angles due to bilateral displacement constraints. The evolutionary molecular processes exhibited insensitive response to the temperature, especially under TCZ conditions. Additionally, varying trends were observed in different bond-angle styles (e.g., within or inside tetrahedra), providing a crucial insight for the design of N-A-S-H to determine optimal components.

Abstract:The incorporation of nano-reinforcements is believed to be a promising method to create high performance nanocomposites, which are largely dependent on the interfacial connections. In this work, the newly emerging two-dimensional (2D) material, 2D-silica is intentionally intercalated into the interlayer defective sites of calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H), which is the primary hydration product of ordinary portland cements. The reactive molecular simulation results indicate the nano-reinforcement can strongly interact with the inorganic matrix to form a high-ductility nanocomposite. The uniaxial tensile loading tests show the plastic stage of the C-S-H is considerably enhanced due to the intercalation of 2D-silica, which removes the intrinsic brittleness of cement-based materials at the nano-scale. It is observed that the dangling atoms at the edge of 2D-silica can react with non-bridging oxygen atoms of C-S-H, forming Si-O-Si bonds at interfaces. Those covalent bonds transform Q1 and Q2 in the C-S-H into high connectivity Q3 and Q4 species, which increases the integrity of the matrix and its resistance to crack propagation. During the tensile process, the elongation and breakage of those high-strength covalent bonds needs higher tensile stress and consumes higher energy, which leads to a strong plasticity and higher toughness. This work may shed new lights on the interaction mechanisms between 2D-materials and inorganic hosts, and provide solutions to modifying the brittleness of concrete.

Abstract:A finite strain micromechanical-based constitutive model is developed for multi-phase polycrystal to characterize the interplay among strain hardening, texture evolution, and stress-strain relation. The phases are regarded as ellipsoidal inhomogeneities within the polycrystalline matrix, which can be considered as an aggregation of different orientated grains. At the grain level, the crystal plasticity model is applied to physically describe the inelastic deformation results from crystallographic slipping. At the polycrystalline level, an algorithmic finite strain self-consistent model is proposed to associate the strain and rotation rate at the grain level with the corresponding terms of the polycrystalline matrix rigorously. At the representative volume element level, the phases with different properties are investigated by extending the Mori-Tanaka model at finite strain. The algorithmic self-consistent model is validated by comparing the calculated normalized stress-strain curves and textures with those obtained by the model adopting extended Taylor hypothesis and the experimental data of stainless steel. Moreover, the grain and polycrystalline level behaviors calculated by the algorithmic self-consistent model are compared to those derived from the full-field model. The effects of void and elastic particles on overall mechanical behavior are analyzed by the extended Mori-Tanaka model, which is then verified by predicting the mechanical behavior of sintered nano-silver stub columns under stress-controlled compression loads.

Abstract:Cement is the most widely used manufacturing material in the world and improving its toughness would allow for the design of slender infrastructure, requiring less material. To this end, we investigate by means of molecular dynamics simulations the fracture of calcium-silicate-hydrate (C-S-H), the binding phase of cement, responsible for its mechanical properties. For the first time, we report values of the fracture toughness, critical energy release rate, and surface energy of C-S-H grains. This allows us to discuss the brittleness of the material at the atomic scale. We show that, at this scale, C-S-H breaks in a ductile way, which prevents from using methods based on linear elastic fracture mechanics. Knowledge of the fracture properties of C-S-H at the nanoscale opens the way for an upscaling approach to the design of tougher cement.

Bending Deformation Driven by Molecular Rotation

Abstract:In recent years, certain molecular crystals have been reported to possess surprising flexibility by undergoing significant elastic or plastic deformation in response to mechanical loads. However, despite this experimental evidence, there currently exists no atomistic mechanism to explain the physical origin of this phenomenon from numerical simulations. In this study, we investigate the mechanical behavior of three naphthalene diimide derivatives, which serve as representative examples, using direct molecular dynamics simulations. Our simulation trajectory analysis suggests that molecular rotational freedom is the key factor in determining a crystal's mechanical response, ranging from brittle fracture to elastic or plastic deformation under mechanical bending. Additionally, we propose a rotation-dependent potential energy surface as a means to classify organic materials' mechanical responses and identify new candidates for future investigation.

Abstract:Dynamic molecular crystals are an emerging class of crystalline materials that can respond to mechanical stress by dissipating internal strain in a number of ways. Given the serendipitous nature of the discovery of such crystals, progress in the field requires advances in computational methods for the accurate and high-throughput computation of the nanomechanical properties of crystals on specific facets which are exposed to mechanical stress. Here, we develop and apply a new atomistic model for computing the surface elastic moduli of crystals on any set of facets of interest using dispersion-corrected density functional theory (DFT-D) methods. The model was benchmarked against a total of 24 reported nanoindentation measurements from a diverse set of molecular crystals and was found to be generally reliable. Using only the experimental crystal structure of the dietary supplement, L-aspartic acid, the model was subsequently applied under blind test conditions, to correctly predict the growth morphology, facet and nanomechanical properties of L-aspartic acid to within the accuracy of the measured elastic stiffness of the crystal, 24.53±0.56 GPa. This work paves the way for the computational design and experimental realization of other functional molecular crystals with tailor-made mechanical properties.
