Abstract:Crucial mechanical-chemical (MC) interactions occur during the cement hydration process in cement marine clay; however, the role of such an important element of the resulting strength has been subject to less investigation, particularly from the theoretical perspective. To overcome this scientific gap, an efficient strength-based model accounting for the coupled MC processes is proposed here. Based on the analysis of the cement hydration mechanism, the porosity was chosen as the main factor to characterize the influence of the MC interactions on the overall response. To verify the accuracy of the MC model, the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) experiment was conducted for the cement marine clay samples, and the corresponding simulation model was constructed using COMSOL multiphysics®. In addition, a comparison between the predicted results by the existing three strength models and the proposed MC model was performed. Subsequently, the sensitivity analysis and identification of mechanical parameters were carefully carried out. The obtained results show that the UCS strength for Taizhou clay ranges from 10.21 kPa to 354.2 kPa as the cement content increases from 10% to 20%, and the curing time varies from 3 days to 28 days. The mechanical parameters in the MC model can be obtained according to the porosity level. A reasonably good agreement between the UCS strength results of simulations and the experimentally observed data is reported. Additionally, the predicted UCS strength results by the MC model demonstrate the best correspondence with the measured values, indicating the high efficacy of the established model.

Abstract:Concrete is a very complex material with a variety of inhomogeneities. Its overall mechanical response depends on the material properties of different composites. Furthermore, the inside configuration of concrete has significant influence on the crack initiation and damage evolution. In this sense, a mesoscale model which treats concrete as a heterogeneous material provides a powerful approach to study concrete deeply. The main work of this paper is to develop a method of generating 3-D numerical model which resembles real concrete in mesoscale. In this model, the concrete is regarded as a three-phase system consisting of coarse aggregate, mortar matrix and interfacial zones between them. The aggregate particles are supposed to have random polyhedral shapes which resemble crushed rocks. A packing algorithm applicable to polyhedrons is advanced to modify the distribution and compactness of aggregate.

Abstract:The morphological effect of calcium silicate hydrates (C–S–H) on the elastic behaviour of early-age cement-based materials is studied based on a refined multi-scale elasticity prediction model. The model demonstrates that the growth morphology of low-density (LD) C–S–H has a significant effect on the solid percolation threshold and the elastic behaviour of early-age cement-based materials, especially in the cases of higher water–cement (w/c) ratios or lower hydration degrees. Using the refined model, the growth morphology of LD C–S–H is quantitatively determined and verified by comparing the predicted results with previous experimental data. It is revealed that LD C–S–H grows in a lengthened manner when w/c is above 0·40, and the aspect ratio of LD C–S–H varies according to the availability of free growth space. When the w/c ratio is at the level of 0·50, the realistic growth morphology of LD C–S–H is close to that of a prolate, with an aspect ratio of the order of 10. The elongated growth of LD C–S–H is the key factor enabling cement-based materials with high w/c to set and have a rapid development of elasticity within the first few hours.

Abstract:As the most important binding phase of cement paste, calcium silicate hydrate can determine the mechanical properties of cementitious materials. Structural, dynamic and mechanical properties of calcium silicate hydrate gel at the colloid level (∼15 nm) were investigated for the first time in light of molecular dynamics. Calcium silicate hydrate models were constructed by aggregation of colloids consisting of layered molecular structures. Five calcium silicate hydrate samples were first constructed by 108 spherical calcium silicate hydrate particles coated by water molecules of thickness from 0 nm to 0·2 nm. The built models including 200 000∼300 000 atoms were subsequently subjected to uniaxial tension testing to determine the mechanical properties. Structurally, water molecules coating the colloids disjoin the interaction between neighbouring calcium silicate hydrate particles by replacing the stable ionic–covalent bonds with low-strength H bonds. Water molecules in the interparticle region diffuse faster than structural water molecules inside calcium silicate hydrate gel, which reduces the stability of colloid aggregation. With increasing water-coated molecule layers, both the stiffness and cohesive force of calcium silicate hydrate gels are significantly weakened. During the tensile process, the region rich with water-coated molecules become the crack propagation channel, which accelerates the tensile failure of calcium silicate hydrate gel in the saturated state.

Abstract:Potential of cement-based materials for energy harvesting is encoded in their elusive mesoporous structure, and understanding the sub-micron structure of calcium silicate hydrate (C–S–H), a major binding phase of cement, is an important yet challenging task. Nanoscale C–S–H is ductile, while macroscopic performance is brittle, suggesting a gap in the transition of material properties from the nano-to the macro-scale, and a chance in finetuning the submicron (∼100 nm) structure to effectively deliver the atomistic properties to the bulk performance. The refined sub-micron structure of C–S–H can enhance the strength and modulus of concrete, thus providing a base material with better mechanical properties and durability. Here, two critical structural features of C–S–H, including agglomeration of globules and stacking of layers, are modeled by spherical and oblate ellipsoidal units, respectively. Coarse-grained modeling and peridynamics simulations find that the packing of ellipsoidal units is better than that of spherical units, from the perspectives of size distribution, morphology, fractality of pores and tensile properties . The analyses on the mesoporous structure shows that the ellipsoid-packing is more homogeneous than the sphere-packing model, and it yields a refined structure with enhancement in tensile modulus and strength. The submicron finetuning enhancement of C–S–H can be realized through different physical and chemical approaches, like inducing lateral growth of silicate chains by chemical additives, scaffolding materials, and conditioned hydration. This coarse-grained simulation work gives novel insights and fundamental strategies for toughening the cement matrix through delivering ductile nanoscale performance of C–S–H to macroscale cementitious materials, and provides superior performance for concrete in existing and new structures.

Abstract:Efforts to tune the bulk physical properties of concrete are hindered by a lack of knowledge related to the atomic-level structure and growth of calcium silicate hydrate phases, which form about 50–60% by volume of cement paste. Here we describe the first synthesis of compositionally uniform calcium silicate hydrate phases with Ca:Si ratios tunable between 1.0 and 2.0. The calcium silicate hydrate synthesized here does not contain a secondary Ca(OH)2 phase, even in samples with Ca:Si ratios above 1.6, which is unprecedented for synthetic calcium silicate hydrate systems. We then solve the atomic-level three-dimensional structure of these materials using dynamic nuclear polarization enhanced 1H and 29Si nuclear magnetic resonance experiments in combination with atomistic simulations and density functional theory chemical shift calculations. We discover that bridging interlayer calcium ions are the defining structural characteristic of single-phase cementitious calcium silicate hydrate, inducing the strong hydrogen bonding that is responsible for stabilizing the structure at high Ca:Si ratios.

Abstract:Many researches have been conducted to study the properties of calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) using numerical modeling. However, there still exists a large gap between the mechanical characteristics of C-S-H. A new composite C-S-Hs model is proposed to more realistically represent the layered feature in this paper. Compared with regularly-arranged C-S-Hs model, larger interlayer space provides sufficient space for water adsorption and the arrangement of C-S-H cells. The random arrangement of multiple C-S-H cells and additional water molecule adsorption have a significant impact on the composite C-S-Hs system. Uniaxial tension tests with different strain rates are utilized to investigate the mechanical properties of the composite C-S-Hs model compared with those of regularly arranged C-S-H cells. The simulation results demonstrate that the mechanical properties of the composite C-S-Hs model are closer to those of cementitious materials on the macroscopic scale. The simulation results highlight the impact of strain rate and interlayer spacing on the characteristics of the multiple C-S-Hs model. The proposed composite C-S-Hs model provides a more reasonable procedure for molecular dynamics simulation of C-S-H.

Abstract:Calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) is a disordered, nanocrystalline material acting as the primary binding phase in Portland cement. Thin films of water are present on the surfaces and inside the nanopores of C-S-H and related phases such as calcium-aluminum-silicate-hydrate (C-A-S-H), an Al-bearing substitute present in low-CO2 C-S-H cement. These water films control many of the chemical and mechanical properties of C-S-H, including drying shrinkage, ion transport, creep, and thermal behavior. Therefore, obtaining a fundamental understanding of their properties is essential. In this work, we have applied a combination of inelastic incoherent neutron scattering and molecular dynamics simulation methods to unravel the dynamics of water in synthetic C-(A)-S-H samples conditioned at five hydration states (from dry to fully hydrated) and with three different Ca/Si ratios (0.9, 1, and 1.3). Our results converge towards a picture where the evolution from thin layers of adsorbed water to bulk capillary water is dampened by the structure of C-(A)-S-H, in particular by the availability of Ca2+ sites which tend to keep the water in the form of structured surface layers.

Abstract:The adsorption behavior of water and ions at the surfaces of porous calcium-silicate-hydrate (C-S-H) gels affects the durability of concrete. This paper presents the results of molecular dynamics simulations performed using the Clay Force Field that were conducted to investigate the local structure, adsorption behavior, and dynamic properties of water and ions in the pores of C-S-H gels. A realistic C-S-H gel channel model was constructed and simulated with three mixed salt solutions (NaCl + Na2SO4, NaCl + Na2CO3, and Na2SO4 + Na2CO3) in the pores. The realistic C-S-H gel surface was found to be hydrophilic, causing water molecules to adopt an orderly arrangement near the substrate surface. This hydrophilicity is due to defective silicon chains in the substrate that provide large numbers of hydrogen bonding sites for surface water molecules. Additionally, calcium atoms near the surface attract water molecules to form hydration layers. The adsorption of cations near the substrate correlated negatively with the strengths of the ionic clusters formed by the dissolved anions and cations. As a result, the adsorption of sodium ion was strongest for the NaCl + Na2SO4 solution and weakest for the Na2SO4 + Na2CO3 solution. There were also clear differences in the adsorption behaviors of the anions. Chloride adsorption was mainly driven by ion pairing with calcium atoms near the surface, while sulfate adsorption was mainly due to ion pairing with surface-adsorbed sodium ions. Conversely, carbonate ions exhibited weaker surface adsorption because of their tendency to form ionic clusters in solution. These insights into the adsorption behaviors of common ions near a realistic C-S-H gel surface will be useful in future efforts to develop modified cement-based materials with improved properties.

Abstract:Arguably the most ubiquitous construction material in modern civilization, concrete is enabling the development of megacities around the globe together with increasing living standards in developing nations. However, it can be argued that the concrete industry's somewhat empirical and conservative approach to change is hampering innovation and associated CO2 reductions, yet materials engineering of the essential phase(s) responsible for strength and durability would enable for revolutionary advancements to be achieved. Using a computational materials engineering approach, we simulate the fundamental solution-based building blocks of cement hydrates and their propensity to form larger complexes as assessed from Gibbs free energies of chemical reactions characteristic of the formation of calcium-silicate-hydrate, calcium-alumino-silicate-hydrate and sodium-containing calcium-alumino-silicate-hydrate gels. By accurately simulating the high pH pore solution chemistry in Portland cements and related systems, along with discrete solvation of the species, we discover and discuss the dominant early stage mechanisms controlling gel formation in these systems.

Abstract:Cement-based materials are widely utilized in infrastructure. The main product of hydrated products of cement-based materials is calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) gels that are considered as the binding phase of cement paste. C-S-H gels in Portland cement paste account for 60–70% of hydrated products by volume, which has profound influence on the mechanical properties and durability of cement-based materials. The preparation method of C-S-H gels has been well documented, but the quality of the prepared C-S-H affects experimental results; therefore, this review studies the preparation method of C-S-H under different conditions and materials. The progress related to C-S-H microstructure is explored from the theoretical and computational point of view. The fractality of C-S-H is discussed. An evaluation of the mechanical properties of C-S-H has also been included in this review. Finally, there is a discussion of the durability of C-S-H, with special reference to the carbonization and chloride/sulfate attacks.

Abstract:Calcium-Silicate-Hydrate (C-S-H) is the primary binding phase in cement and plays a crucial role in lifecycle performance of concrete. Understanding its multiscale mechanical properties is essential for optimizing its performance. In this study, we employed atomic force microscopy (AFM), nanoindentation and oedometric test to characterize multi-scale mechanical behaviours of C-S-H with different chemical composition and microstructure. Moreover, a calculation framework is used to bridge inter-scale gaps. Our results reveal the complex hierarchical features of C-S-H and its impact on mechanical properties including elastic, plastic, and viscous responses. We also identify the critical role of chemical composition including calcium-to-silica ratio and water content on the observed mechanical behaviours. Additionally, our multiscale model provides a valuable tool for rational design of C-S-H-based materials with tailored mechanical properties at less material cost.

Abstract:The nature of Calcium--Silicate--Hydrate (C--S--H), the binding phase of cement, remains a controversial question. In particular, contrary to the former crystalline model, it was recently proposed that its nanoscale structure was actually amorphous. To elucidate this issue, we analyzed the structure of a realistic simulation of C--S--H, and compared the latter to crystalline tobermorite, a natural analogue to cement, and to an artificial ideal glass. Results clearly support that C--S--H is amorphous. However, its structure shows an intermediate degree of order, retaining some characteristics of the crystal while acquiring an overall glass-like disorder. Thanks to a detailed quantification of order and disorder, we show that its amorphous state mainly arises from its hydration.

Abstract:Fully understanding the fracture behavior of concrete is a challenging work since concrete is a complex multiscale composite material with a heterogeneous structure at different length scales ranging from nanoscale to macroscale. A new multiscale model framework was proposed in the present study to explore the mechanical properties, including Young's modulus E and ultimate tensile strength UTS , and fracture behavior of calcium-silicate-hydrate (C-S-H) from the nanoscale to mesoscale. The nanoscale C-S-H globule models were built and simulated via molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and then the obtained mechanical properties were employed as the input parameters for the mesoscale Peridynamics (PD) simulations to acquire the E , UTS , and fracture behavior of C-S-H gel. The results reveal that at nanoscale, the mechanical performance of C-S-H is anisotropic: As the size of C-S-H model increases, the E and UTS of C-S-H decrease because the extension of crack in a larger C-S-H model will release more stored energy. At mesoscale as the packing fraction φ increases, the E and UTS of C-S-H gel increase. The resulted E and UTS are in line with former simulations and experimental data implying the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed multiscale model.

Abstract:The incorporation of nano-reinforcements is believed to be a promising method to create high performance nanocomposites, which are largely dependent on the interfacial connections. In this work, the newly emerging two-dimensional (2D) material, 2D-silica is intentionally intercalated into the interlayer defective sites of calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H), which is the primary hydration product of ordinary portland cements. The reactive molecular simulation results indicate the nano-reinforcement can strongly interact with the inorganic matrix to form a high-ductility nanocomposite. The uniaxial tensile loading tests show the plastic stage of the C-S-H is considerably enhanced due to the intercalation of 2D-silica, which removes the intrinsic brittleness of cement-based materials at the nano-scale. It is observed that the dangling atoms at the edge of 2D-silica can react with non-bridging oxygen atoms of C-S-H, forming Si-O-Si bonds at interfaces. Those covalent bonds transform Q1 and Q2 in the C-S-H into high connectivity Q3 and Q4 species, which increases the integrity of the matrix and its resistance to crack propagation. During the tensile process, the elongation and breakage of those high-strength covalent bonds needs higher tensile stress and consumes higher energy, which leads to a strong plasticity and higher toughness. This work may shed new lights on the interaction mechanisms between 2D-materials and inorganic hosts, and provide solutions to modifying the brittleness of concrete.

Abstract:A research study was recently conducted using the molecular dynamics approach to investigate the physico-chemical nature of interactions between chloride ions and various hydration products of cement that could lead to chloride accumulation in concrete. This paper presents the findings of one primary focus of the study, i.e. studying the transport behaviour of chloride ions in the calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) phases of cement paste. Based on a comprehensive review, three reprehensive hydrated compounds, i.e. the portlandite, tobermorite and jennite, were modelled to evaluate the transport property of generic C-S-H phases in cement paste. Using the 35Cl nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy technique, the MD models were validated and used to study the binding capacity of C-S-H phases towards the migrating chloride ions at the water–solid interfaces. The macroscopic transport phenomenon of chloride in C-S-H phases was studied in terms of the effective diffusion coefficient computed using a mean-square displacement approach.

Abstract:The time-dependent viscoelastic response of cement-based materials to applied deformation is far from fully understood at the atomic level. Calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H), the main hydration product of Portland cement, is responsible for the viscoelastic mechanism of cement-based materials. In this study, a molecular model of C-S-H was developed to explain the stress relaxation characteristics of C-S-H at different initial deformation states, Ca/Si ratios, temperatures, and water contents, which cannot be accessed experimentally. The stress relaxation of C-S-H occurs regardless of whether it is subjected to initial shear, tensile, or compressive deformation, and shows a heterogeneous characteristic. Water plays a crucial role in the stress relaxation process. A large Ca/Si ratio and high temperature reduce the cohesion between the calcium-silicate layer and the interlayer region, and the viscosity of the interlayer region, thereby accelerating the stress relaxation of C-S-H. The effect of the hydrogen bond network and the morphology of C-S-H on the evolution of the stress relaxation characteristics of C-S-H at different water contents was elucidated by nonaffine mean squared displacement. Our results shed light on the stress relaxation characteristics of C-S-H from a microscopic perspective, bridging the gap between the microscopic phenomena and the underlying atomic-level mechanisms.

Abstract:Calcium silicate hydrate (C–S–H) gel contains almost 50% to 70% of cement paste, which has a significant effect on the cement paste properties. An attempt is made to assess the atomistic structure of calcium silicate hydrate and the impact of water on it through molecular dynamics simulation. The most similar compositions (tobermorite 14Å, tobermorite 11Å, and jennite) are chosen and the effect of water thereof is studied. This study is presented in two phases: (1) water removal from the structure and simulating difference of water-to-calcium ratios through grand canonical Monte Carlo method. Next, the effect of water on the mechanical properties of C–S–H gel is examined through molecular dynamics method. (2) Defects in the existing molecular structures were introduced, which lead to newer Ca–Si proportions followed by the examination of the effect of water on the new structures. The obtained results revealed that as W/Ca ratio increases, the Young's modulus decreases. An increase in the Ca/Si ratio, owing to the defects in the structure, leads to the reduction in the Young's modulus.

Abstract:Calcium aluminosilicate hydrate (C-A-S-H) is the main hydration product of environmentally friendly concrete, which uses aluminum-rich industrial waste residue to partially replace cement raw materials. In order to understand the structure and properties of C-A-S-H gel at the molecular level. The structure, dynamics and mechanical properties of C-A-S-H gel at different Al/Si ratios were studied by reactive molecular dynamics simulation. The results showed that the doping of aluminates substances caused changes in the silicate-aluminate skeleton and inter-layer water molecules in C-A-S-H gels. As the Al/Si ratio increased, more water molecules dissociated and associated with Al atoms to produce Al-O(H)-Si and Al-OH. In addition, the presence of Al-O-Si chains not only imposed geometrical constraints on the inter-layer water molecules, but also increased the attraction of the substrate for water molecules. Furthermore, the mechanical behavior and deformation mechanism of C-A-S-H gels were investigated based on uniaxial tensile tests. The inter-layer bond strength and stiffness of C-A-S-H gels increased significantly with increasing tensile load and aluminate branching structure.
