Abstract:The treatment of nanoparticle (NP) polluted aqueous suspensions by flotation can be problematic due to the low probability of collision between particles and bubbles. To overcome this limitation, the present work focuses on developing an enhanced flotation technique using the surface-functionalized micro-bubbles - colloidal gas aphrons (CGAs). The CGA generator was adapted to be air flow rate controlled based on the classical Sebba system; thus it could be well adopted in a continuous flotation process. Cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) were employed for CGA creation. Positively surface-charged CTAB-CGAs (similar to 44.1 mu m in size) and negatively surface-charged SDS-CGAs (similar to 42.1 mu m in size) were produced at the optimum stirring speed of 8000 rpm. The half-life of CGAs varied from 100 s to 340 s under the tested conditions, which was largely sufficient for transferring CGAs from bubble generator to flotation cell. The air flow led to less stable CTAB-CGAs but apparently enhanced the stability of SDS-CGAs at higher air flow rates. In the presence of air flow, the drainage behavior was not much related to the type of surfactants. The continuous CGA-flotation trials highlighted the effective separation of silica nanoparticles - the removal efficiencies of different types of SiO2 NPs could reach approximately 90%-99%; however, at equivalent surfactant concentrations, no greater than 58% of NPs were removed when surfactants and bubbles were separately added into the flotation cell. The SiO2 NPs with small size were removed more efficiently by the CGA-flotation process. For the flotation with CTAB-CGAs, the neutral and basic initial SNP suspension was recommended, whereas the SDS-CGAs remained high flotation efficiency over all investigated pH. The good performance of CGA-flotation might be interpreted: most of the surfactant molecules well covered/coated on the surfaces of stable CGAs and thus fully contacted with NPs, resulting in the efficient utilization of surfactants. Abstract:As a novel nanoporous carbon material with high porosity, large specific surface area, excellent electrical conductivity and high temperature resistance, carbon aerogels have broad application prospects in the fields of catalyst carriers, energy storage and adsorption materials. In this work, the hydrophobic micro-convex rough interface cellulose carbon aerogels (CCAs) were fabricated via carbonization of cellulose-lithium bromide (LiBr) molten salt hydrate gelled system. The prepared CCAs shows a low density (0.016–0.023 g/cm3), high porosity (98.9–99.2 %), superior hydrophobicity (water contact angle over 135°) and excellent absorption of different oils and organic solvents. The absorption ability of CCAs 1.0-T800 for different oils and organic solvents can be 25–55 times its own weight. More importantly, the CCAs adsorbent can be reused by simple absorption/distillation method and still kept high-efficiency oil absorption capacity and excellent hydrophobicity after 5 absorption/elution cycles, displaying recyclability and robust stability. This study provides a green and facile way to fabrication of cellulose II carbon aerogels for application in spilled oil recovery, and exhibited highly promising as an economical, efficient and safe adsorbent for wastewater treatment.

Abstract:We herein report a series of COF-based poroplastic chitosan aerogels via a facile templated freeze-drying approach. The obtained composite aerogels are hydrophilic, robust, uniform and processable, however, with COF crystallinity and functionalities. Specifically, by introducing Pd@COF species (up to 50 wt%), we fabricated Pd@COF@chitosan aerogels which can be used to build highly efficient continuous flow-through microreactors for chlorobenzene (CB) dechlorination in water at room temperature. Given the versatile structural, shaping, and functional features, this approach could hopefully bring COFs into practical applications, especially concerning the growing global environmental issues.

Abstract:Design of graphene composite aerogel with intriguing attributes usually complicates the preparation process. It is still challenging to achieve high-performance graphene aerogel in a feasible way. Herein, graphene@cellulose nanocrystals/EPDM composite aerogel (rGCA/EPDM) with well-ordered lamellar porous structure and interconnected networks was prepared through a facile strategy of chemical reduction and self-assembly under natural drying condition. Interfacial bonding formed in the composite aerogel, and CNCs acted as reinforcing skeleton and EPDM chains provided crosslinking elastic network in the composite aerogel, which endowed rGCA/EPDM with superior compressibility and recoverability (up to 90% strain), excellent mechanical flexibility, enhanced EMI SE and effective adsorption performance for oil/water separation. The hydrophobic rGCA/EPDM could adsorb various oils and organic solvents from water phase, meanwhile the absorbed solvents could be recovered by continuous adsorption-desorption process and the adsorption capacity only slightly reduced after 10 adsorption-squeezing or adsorption-volatilization cycles, revealing the good structural stability and recyclable adsorption performance due to its hydrophobicity and robust hierarchical porous structure. Moreover, the composite aerogel could realize real-time adsorption of organic solvent from water surface by pumping force. Such an effective strategy obtaining the composite aerogel exhibits a promising potential in oil cleanup and pollution remediation field.

Abstract:In view of the serious perniciousness and complex diversity of actual wastewater systems, exploiting a robust and multifunctional adsorbent material featuring high sorption efficiency, broad-spectrum applicability, and excellent recyclability in treating multifarious pollutants in water (such as oils and fluoride ions) is highly required; however, it is still a daunting goal to pursue to date. In this work, novel mechanically robust and exceptional graphene oxide/hydroxyapatite nanowire (GO/HAPNW) aerogels (RGHAs/polydopamine (PDA)@RGHAs) with adjustable surface wettability were developed through a facile sol-gel self-assembly technology and subsequently optional bioinspired hydrophilic modification. Thanks to the reinforcing effect of HAPNWs with higher aspect ratio, a remarkably improved mechanical robustness (including superior compressibility and superelasticity) was acquired for the resulting aerogels. Based on the cooperative effect of the favorable selective wetting properties (i.e., hydrophobic/oleophilic for RGHAs) and the excellent mechanic stability, the aerogels displayed an outstanding sorption performance for diverse oils/organic solvents accompanied with a prominent recyclability. Specifically, a fairly high adsorption capacity of as high as 191 times of its own mass (for pump oil) was achieved based on a fast adsorption kinetic process. More importantly, superamphiphilic three-dimensional (3D) PDA@RGHAs revealed an extraordinary removal capability for water-soluble fluoride ions, exhibiting a superior equilibrium adsorption capacity (qe, 9.93 mg/g), which is distinctly superior to those of low-dimensional fluorine adsorbent materials recently reported. Accordingly, the as-prepared 3D aerogels combining both superior oil/organic solvent adsorption and excellent defluorination capability reveal a competitive application prospect toward effective intricate oily wastewater purification.

Abstract:Carbon aerogels have attracted increasing research interest in a wide range of potential applications owing to their unique structural features, yet the scalable preparation of carbon aerogels configured by nanoporous carbon skeletons with high surface area and precise pore structure is a great challenge. Herein, we report a molecular-scale interface engineering concept for high-throughput and scalable production of well-defined microporous carbon aerogels (MPCAs) based on simple and fast polycondensation (<8 s) of dialdehyde with silsesquioxane. Benefiting from the unique organic/inorganic hybrid molecule structure, the silsesquioxane favours the formation of molecular-scale silica templates with uniform carbon source/template interface. The resulting MPCAs exhibit 3D interconnected macroporous framework combined with well-defined micropore skeleton and large surface area. These intriguing features render MPCAs superb pore accessibility and utilization, and thus they demonstrate great promise as adsorbent materials for rapid removal (<10 s) of organic micropollutants with high uptake, and as electrocatalyst supports for incorporation of metal-nitrogen-carbon species with excellent activities.

Abstract:Hierarchically porous carbons with tailor-made properties are essential for applications wherein rich active sites and fast mass transfer are required. Herein, a rapid aerosol-confined salt/surfactant templating approach is proposed for synthesizing hierarchically porous carbon microspheres (HPCMs) with a maze-like structure and large mesopore tunnels for high-performance tri-phase catalytic ozonation. The confined assembly in drying microdroplets is crucial for coherent salt (NaCl) and surfactant (F127) dual templating without macroscopic phase separation. The HPCMs possess tunable sizes, a maze-like structure with highly open macropores (0.3-30 µm) templated from NaCl crystal arrays, large intrawall mesopore tunnels (10-45 nm) templated from F127, and rich micropores (surface area >1000 m2 g-1 ) and oxygen heteroatoms originated from NaCl-confined carbonization of phenolic resin. The structure formation mechanism of the HPCMs and several influencing factors on properties are elaborated. The HPCMs exhibit superior performance in gas-liquid-solid tri-phase catalytic ozonation for oxalate degradation, owing to their hierarchical pore structure for fast mass transfer and rich defects and oxygen-containing groups (especially carbonyl) for efficient O3 activation. The reactive oxygen species responsible for oxalate degradation and the influences of several structure parameters on performance are discussed. This work may provide a platform for producing hierarchically porous materials for various applications.
Ultralight Silica Foams with a Hierarchical Pore Structure Via a Surfactant-Free High Internal Phase Emulsion Process

Abstract:An ultralight silica aerogel is among the most versatile materials available for technical applications; however, it remains a huge challenge to reduce its manufacturing cost. Here, we report on a simple approach for the preparation of silica foam monoliths with ultrahigh porosity up to 99.5% and specific surface area as high as 755 m2 g-1, which are similar to those of an aerogel. Our strategy is based on the effective stabilization of water-in-oil high internal phase emulsions by a hydrophobic silica precursor polymer, hyperbranched polyethoxysiloxane because of its hydrolysis-induced amphiphilicity. After conversion of this precursor polymer to silica, the emulsions are solidified without significant volume shrinkage. Thus, mechanically strong macroporous silica monoliths are obtained after removal of its liquid components. According to nitrogen sorption data, the resulting silica foams exhibit a high specific surface area and a foam skeleton consisting of both micropores (<2 nm) and mesopores (2-50 nm). The pore size, porosity, and surface area can be regulated by varying pH as well as the concentration of the silica precursor in the oil phase. In addition, the pore size can be adjusted by controlling shear force during emulsification. This work opens a new avenue for producing ultralight porous materials amenable to numerous applications.

Abstract:Due to the unique structure, carbon aerogels have always shown great potential for multifunctional applications. At present, it is highly desirable but remains challenging to tailor the microstructures with respect to porosity and specific surface area to further expand its significance. A facile chemical foaming coupled self-etching strategy is developed for multiscale processing of carbon aerogels. The strategy is directly realized via the pyrolysis of a multifunctional precursor (pentaerythritol melamine phosphate) without any special drying process and multiple steps. In the micrometer scale, the macroporous scaffold structures with interconnected and strutted carbon nanosheets are built up by chemical foaming from decomposition of melamine, whereas the meso/microporous nanosheets are formed via self-etching by phosphorus-containing species. The delicately hierarchical structures and record-breaking specific surface area of 2668.4 m2 g-1 render the obtained carbon aerogels great potentials for absorption (324.1-593.6 g g-1 of absorption capacities for varied organic solvents) and energy storage (338 F g-1 of specific capacitance). The construction of such novel carbon nanoarchitecture will also shed light on the design and synthesis of multifunctional materials.
Facile Synthesis of Polymer-Reinforced Silica Aerogel Microspheres as Robust, Hydrophobic and Recyclable Sorbents for Oil Removal from Water

Abstract:With the rapid development of industry and the acceleration of urbanization, oil pollution has caused serious damage to water, and its treatment has always been a research hotspot. Compared with traditional adsorption materials, aerogel has the advantages of light weight, large adsorption capacity and high selective adsorption, features that render it ideal as a high-performance sorbent for water treatment. The objective of this research was to develop novel hydrophobic polymer-reinforced silica aerogel microspheres (RSAMs) with water glass as the precursor, aminopropyltriethoxysilane as the modifier, and styrene as the crosslinker for oil removal from water. The effects of drying method and polymerization time on the structure and oil adsorption capacity were investigated. The drying method influenced the microstructure and pore structure in a noteworthy manner, and it also significantly depended on the polymerization time. More crosslinking time led to more volume shrinkage, thus resulting in a larger apparent density, lower pore volume, narrower pore size distribution and more compact network. Notably, the hydrophobicity increased with the increase in crosslinking time. After polymerization for 24 h, the RSAMs possessed the highest water contact angle of 126°. Owing to their excellent hydrophobicity, the RSAMs via supercritical CO2 drying exhibited significant oil and organic liquid adsorption capabilities ranging from 6.3 to 18.6 g/g, higher than their state-of-the-art counterparts. Moreover, their robust mechanical properties ensured excellent reusability and recyclability, allowing for multiple adsorption–desorption cycles without significant degradation in performance. The novel sorbent preparation method is facile and inspiring, and the resulting RSAMs are exceptional in capacity, efficiency, stability and regenerability.

Abstract:The separation of oil from wastewater and materials for oil absorption are highly demanded in the modern industrialization. For these purposes, silica aerogels with high hydrophobicity and surface aera and low density are promising candidates for oil absorption, but limited by the poor mechanical strength and structure stability during the usage. In this study, we presented a novel compressive silica aerogel by silica nanofiber (SNF) reinforcement and subsequent hydrophobic polyurethane strengthening via moisture curing (PSAG). The obtained PSAG exhibits unique core/shell fibrous reinforcement and prominent crosslinked network structure. The porous PSAG has a porosity of 81.06 % and density of 0.43 g cm−3 at solid content of 20 %. The hydrophobic PSAG shows an impressive sorption capacity towards CH2Cl2 (11.2 g g−1), THF (5.5 g g−1) and acetone (3.8 g g−1), being able to separate 100 % of oils from an immiscible oil–water mixture. The PSAG shows exceptional resistance to acidic and alkaline conditions and has high flexibility and desirable reusability in repeatedly oil adsorption. Most importantly, the mechanical strength of SAG can be improved to 0.27 MPa of PSAG at prepolymer solid content of 20 %, and no cracking or deformation were observed after 50 cycles. Additionally, the PSAG shows impressive thermal insulation and flame retardancy performance in the air, which should have potential application as insulator for the solar evaporation for the purification of wastewater. This work provides new understanding and insight for further design and optimization of polyurethane-based reinforced aerogels.

Abstract:Nanocelluloses (NCs)‐based aerogels have gradually attracted attention due to their excellent performance in oil recovery for mitigating environmental pollution caused by oil spillages. However, hydrophobicity due to polyhydroxy groups and fragile in water, as well as a complicated fabricating process, significantly restrict their practical applications. Herein, we reported a facile route to fabricate superelastic polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)@NCs aerogels through a Pickering emulsion strategy. The hierarchical PDMS@NCs aerogels exhibit function‐dependent porous structures and integrated properties of hydrophobicity and lipophilicity, stemming from the synergistic effect of the hydrophobic skin layer and porous matrix. The resulting aerogels are capable of continuous oil/water filtration by adsorption‐extrusion with a flux up to 4300 L·m−2·h−1 and a separation efficiency of 99.9%. Therefore, this provides a new route for the rational design of morphology‐tunable NCs‐based aerogels and affords a reference for its practical application in durable oil/water separation. Abstract:Silica aerogels, which consist of nano-particles and abundant nano-pores, have many outstanding properties. However, poor mechanical performances dramatically limit the practical applications of aerogel. Herein, we reported the preparation of novel superhydrophobic and flexible silica aerogel with several kinds of polysiloxane. The aerogel was formed with the polysiloxane and multimethoxy-POSS, the POSS was efficiently synthesized by thio-ene reaction and used as a crosslinking agent to strengthen the structure. The obtained data revealed all aerogels had the mesoporous structure (19–27 nm), high specific surface area (476.3–632.9 m2 g−1) and fine heat resistance. The different ratio of side groups on polysiloxane and the content of POSS led to the different mechanical properties, the ultimate compression strain was up to 50%. Moreover, the further oil-water separation application has also been demonstrated.

Abstract:Polluted water is a worldwide problem; therefore, effective separation of oil/water and removal of dyes, organic micropollutants, and heavy metals in wastewater are the need of the hour. Herein, hydrophilic β-cyclodextrin-grafted carboxymethyl cellulose, biodegradable polyvinyl alcohol, and chitosan were used as main raw materials to construct a multifunctional aerogel framework by simple sol–gel and directional freeze-drying methods. Featuring intrinsic superamphiphilic wettability in air, robust superoleophobic wettability underwater, and excellent shape-recovery characteristics, the biomass-derived aerogel presents durable oil/water separation even after 10 cycles. The aerogels possess prominent adsorption capacity for methyl blue, 1-naphthylamine, and Cu2+, which was as high as 121.55 mg/g, 33.96 mg/g, and 122.6 mg/g, respectively. Abstract:Adsorbent materials with high absorptive capacity, stable mechanical properties, greenness and economy are highly desirable for efficient removal and recovery of oil from wastewater. Herein, an ultralight, low-cost and reusable hydrophobic aerogel of cellulose acetate/polyethylene oxide hybrid nanofibers was developed through thermally crosslinking and organosilicon modification. Through thermal crosslinking and ice crystal template, a hierarchical pore structure was obtained which endowed the aerogel with mechanical stability and oil-absorption capacity. In addition, the structure was furtherly strengthened after chemical vapor deposition of methyl trichlorosilane good hydrophobicity (contact angle of 135.5°) can be realized. The surface-modified aerogel presented ultralow density (8.74 mg cm-3), excellent resilience (completely recover to its original height after 50 compression cycles), high absorption capacity (weight gain of 63-128 g/g) and reusability. Therefore, the nanofibrous aerogels with outstanding compressive resilience and reusability make it promising to meet the increasing demand in the field of oil pollution cleaning.

Abstract:Ultralight ceramic foam materials with high porosity play an important role in increasingly hi-tech areas due to the combinative merit of ceramic material and highly porous structure. So far, it remains challenging to fabricate alumina ceramic foams with extremely high porosity and high specific surface area that are comparable to aerogel materials by employing a low cost, eco-friendly and convenient approach. For the first time, we propose the preparation of aerogel-like ceramic foams with nanoscale cell wall and unprecedentedly high porosity using boehmite sol as both ceramic source and bubble interface stabilizer, based on sol nanoparticles stabilized foams using sodium lauryl sulfate (SDS) as modifier. The obtained ultra-stable sol foams allow for the achievement of bulk foams with ultrathin cell wall with thickness in the range of 30-90nm, super-high porosity up to 99%, and large specific surface area of 280m(2)/g, which is attributed to the well-organized assembly of nanoparticles at the liquid/air interfaces. This novel foam material demonstrates excellent adsorption ability for polar volatile organic gases (VOCs) due to its extremely high porosity and large specific surface area.

Abstract:Silica aerogels generally exhibit poor mechanical properties, which seriously restrict their commercial use and makes it necessary to reinforce their structures to obtain materials strong enough to withstand mechanical stresses. The incorporation of polymers into silica aerogels is a promising approach due to the enhancement in mechanical strength afforded and the possibility of imparting the hydrophobicity of the polymers to the resulting aerogels. However, the processes typically employed to prepare polymer-reinforced silica aerogels are complex, arduous and costly, requiring multiple washing and soaking steps for the infiltration of the polymer precursors after gelation and supercritical drying. Additionally, diffusion problems can result in heterogeneity in aerogel monoliths due to the use of various cross-linked polymers and the autoclave-limited dimensions of aerogels. In this study, a facile sol–gel route was developed to fabricate a large (500 cm3) polymer–silica aerogel monolith that was stable under atmospheric conditions and suitable for machining. The synthesis of the polymer–silica aerogels began with a facile one-pot reaction involving resorcinol (R), formaldehyde (F), methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS), and N-(β-aminoethyl)-γ-aminopropyl-trimethoxysilane (AEAPTES), followed by an ambient-pressure drying process. The resulting aerogels were characterised by nitrogen adsorption–desorption, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), contact angle, and thermal conductivity measurements, and the aerogel mechanical properties were evaluated by a unidirectional compression test. The Young's modulus of compression of the aerogels was observed to increase from 3.95 to 34.88 MPa with an increase in the density of the aerogels from 0.14 to 0.26 g cm−3. Simultaneously, the aerogels were observed to be superhydrophobic, with a contact angle as high as 168°, and exhibited low thermal conductivity (0.038 W m−1 K−1) and good absorption for organic liquids, which are critical characteristics for the practical application of aerogels, especially in energy-saving and oil-/chemical-cleanup practices.

Abstract:With declining conventional reserves, tapping heavy oils generates substantial emissions yet is essential to meet energy demands. This study pioneers an integrated approach using silica aerogels to develop thermally stable flue gas foams for enhanced CO2 sequestration and heavy oil recovery. Microfluidic experiments and molecular dynamics simulations revealed a 5-fold decrease in gas diffusion rates for aerogel-stabilized versus pure surfactant foams at 95 °C due to the ultralow thermal conductivity of the nanoparticle coating layer. The thermally stable nanoengineered foams demonstrated a remarkable 81.23% CO2 trapping efficiency in heterogeneous cores, surpassing conventional flue gas foam. Additionally, three-dimensional simulations in an oil reservoir model showed improved vertical conformance and oil recovery with aerogel-stabilized foam. The exceptional insulating properties redirected heat downward to enhance sweep efficiency. This novel concept transforms flue gas emissions into value-added foams for concurrent environmental and productivity benefits during heavy oil development.
