Abstract:Two N-alkylated diketopyrrolopyrrole derivatives, namely, FDPP-C8 and TDPP-C8, were prepared and applied in the ratiometric and fluorescent detection of Cu2+ in acetonitrile. The distinct optical changes of two probes were attributed to the fast radical process of diketopyrrolopyrrole triggered by Cu2+. This reaction mechanism was investigated by NMR, MS and EPR experiments and DFT theoretical calculations. The detection of Cu2+ with FDPP-C8 and TDPP-C8 were completed instantaneously, making them convenient for practical real-time operation. The limits of detection of FDPP-C8 and TDPP-C8 for Cu2+ were calculated as 65 and 127 nM, respectively. Relevant competitive ions exerted no effect. In addition, the intrinsic two-photon absorption properties of FDPP-C8 were also investigated and successfully used in the detection of Cu2+. Furthermore, given that Cu2+/Cu+-involved radical process is solvent dependent, TDPP-C8 was used to construct a INHIBIT logic gate at the molecular level with DMF and Cu2+ as inputs.

Abstract:A new chemosensor for Cu2+ based on Schiff base with high sensitivity and selectivity was designed and synthesized. The fluorescence intensity of the chemosensor in CH3CN solution was enhanced 160-fold after the addition of 10 equiv. Cu2+ over other metal ions. In addition, it also facilitates colorimetric detection for Cu2+ in CH3CN solution. The chemosensor displayed low detection limit and fast response time to Cu2+.

Abstract:A dual-mode colorimetric/fluorescence pH sensor was fabricated from carbon dots (CDs). It exhibited a pH response via both fluorescence and visible colorimetric observation. The CDs solution changed from red to yellow when the pH changed from acid to alkaline. Meanwhile, the color of pH test paper that incorporated the CDs changed from purple-red to orange and then to yellow. The CD fluorescence maximum was at 630 nm in acid solution and 590 nm under neutral and alkaline conditions. The fluorescence of the pH test paper changed from red to orange and then to yellow, which was better than that of the pure CDs solution. The CDs exhibited highly selective and reversible fluorescence quenching with respect to Cu2+ ions because of strong binding and fast chelating kinetics. There was a linear relationship between fluorescence quenching and Cu2+ concentration, suggesting the other promising practical usage of this sensing system. The versatile CDs-based pH sensor thus provides a basis for developing sustainable and fast-response dual-mode pH meters as well as Cu2+ sensing.

Abstract:A highly sensitive and selective method is proposed for colorimetric detection of copper ions using 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) modified silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The presence of Cu2+ induces the aggregation of 4-MBA modified AgNPs, this resulting in a color change from bright yellow to purple. The concentration of Cu2+ could be quantified by naked eyes or a UV–vis spectrometer. The absorbance ratio (A560nm/A393nm) is linear with the concentration of Cu2+ ranging from 1×10−7M to 1×10−4M with a coefficient of 0.998. The detection limit is as low as 2.5×10−8M. The proposed method could be successfully applied to determine Cu2+ in drinking water.

Abstract:Low molecular weight polystyryllithium was synthesised and terminated with a two-fold molar excess of beta-bromostyrene to produce an end-functionalised polymer. 1,3-Diphenylallyl-terminated polystyrene and other reaction products were analysed by FT-Raman spectroscopy. By comparison with model compounds, it can be deduced that beta-bromostyrene with a predominantly trans configuration gave rise to primarily cis conformational unsaturation at the polystyrene chain-end. It was also demonstrated that a polystyrene 'dimer' and 1,4-diphenylbutadiene were produced via side-reactions which are considered to result from metal-halogen exchange in the reagents.

Abstract:Manganese-doped ZnS quantum dots (ZnS:Mn(II) QDs) were synthesized and modified with L-cysteine (L-Cys) and 6-mercaptonicotinic acid (MNA). This prevents the aggregation of the QDs and makes them available for the interaction with Cu(II) ions via Cu(II)-S interaction. As a result, the fluorescence of the QDs is quenched by Cu(II) due to an electron transfer mechanism. The QDs display two emission peaks under 325 nm excitation, one (being red) peaking at 593 nm, the other (blue) at 412 nm. The red fluorescence is strongly quenched, while the blue fluorescence is not affected. An easily distinguishable color change from orange red to purple can be observed in fluorescence as the concentration of Cu(II) is increased. The probe is selective over commonly encountered other ions. Abstract:Fluorescent graphene oxide (GO) nanoparticles were obtained from the thermal carbonization of citrate acid. Depending on the synthesizing temperature, the size of GO varied from several to several hundred nanometers. Owing to the confinement from the size, green and blue emissions at around 504 and 450 nm were observed from the GO suspension. These emissions could be dynamically quenched by titrating against copper (II) (Cu2+) ions, and the emission intensity was reduced exponentially as a function of Cu2+ concentration. The quenching mechanism was ascribed to the bridging of the surface –COOH and –OH groups by Cu2+, which restricted the vibration of edge atoms or clusters and reduced the number of luminophores of GO nanosheets. As a result, the concentration of Cu2+ was detectable with the fluorescent intensity of GO.

Abstract:Herein, a dual-emission metal-organic framework based ratiometric fluorescence nanoprobe was reported for detecting copper(II) ions. In particular, carbon dots (CDs) and gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) were embedded into ZIF-8 (one of the classical metal-organic frameworks) to form CDs/AuNCs@ZIF-8 nanocomposites, which exhibited dual-emission peaks at UV excitation. In the presence of Cu2+, the fluorescence attributed to AuNCs can be rapidly quenched, while the fluorescence of CDs serves as reference with undetectable changes. Therefore, the CDs/AuNCs@ZIF-8 nanocomposites were utilized as a ratiometric fluorescence nanoprobe for sensitive and selective detection of Cu2+. A good linear relationship between the ratiometric fluorescence signal of CDs/AuNCs@ZIF-8 and Cu2+ concentration was obtained in the range of 10-3-103 μM, and the detection limit was as low as 0.3324 nM. The current ratiometric fluorescence nanoprobe showed promising prospects in cost-effective and rapid determination of Cu2+ ions with good sensitivity and selectivity. Furthermore, this nanoprobe has been successfully applied for the quantitative detection of Cu2+ in serum samples, indicating its value of practical application. Abstract:A fluorescent and colorimetric dual-mode strategy based on carbon dots (CDs) was rationally designed for sensitive determination of Cu2+. Green fluorescent CDs with high absolute quantum yield of 72.9% were synthesized by facile one-step hydrothermal treatment of triethylenetetramine and Rose Bengal. Cu2+ could trigger the oxidative and chromogenic reaction of p-phenylenediamine (PPD) to generate chromogenic PPDox, accompanied by the fluorescence quenching of the CDs. The quenching mechanism was identified as the inner filter effect between PPDox and CDs. Therefore, a colorimetric/fluorescent dual-mode detection method for Cu2+ recognition was constructed. The limits of detection for Cu2+ were 4.14 μM and 1.28 μM for colorimetric and fluorescent mode, respectively. In addition, this method had achieved satisfactory results in the detection of Cu2+ in real serum samples.

Abstract:A novel DNA-templated click chemistry strategy for homogenous fluorescent detection of Cu(2+) has been developed based on click ligation-dependent DNA structure switch and the selective quenching ability of graphene oxide (GO) nanosheet. The clickable duplex probe consists of two DNA strands with alkyne and azide group, respectively, and Cu(+)-catalyzed alkyne-azide cycloaddition (CuAAC) reaction can chemically ligate these two strands. Toehold sequence displacement was consequently exploited to achieve DNA structure transformation bearing fluorescent tag FAM. Cu(2+)-induced chemical ligation caused the probe transfer to hybrid structure with single stranded DNA (ssDNA) tail, while only duplex structure was obtained without Cu(2+). This structural difference can be probed by GO-based fluorescence detection due to the preferential binding of GO to ssDNA. Under the optimum conditions, this sensor can sensitively and specifically detect Cu(2+) with a low detection limit of 58 nM and a linear range of 0.1-10 μM. This new strategy is highly sensitive and selective for Cu(2+) detection because of the great specificity of click chemistry and super-quenching ability of GO. Moreover, with the aid of high efficient DNA templated synthesis, the detection process requires only about half an hour which is much quicker than previous click-chemistry-based Cu(2+) sensors.

Abstract:In this work, a novel fluorescent biosensor has been constructed for rapid detection of Cu(II) via the interaction between the fluorophore groups on the surface of nitrogen-doped-carbon-dots (N-CDs) and ·OH produced from the catalytic reaction between Cu (II) and cysteine (Cys). Specifically, Cu (II) can catalyze the oxidation of Cys to form cystine (Cys–Cys) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and Cu (II) can also catalyze the decomposition of H2O2 to produce hydroxyl radicals (·OH) by the Fenton-like reaction. ·OH can oxidize and destroy the surface structure of N-CDs, resulting in the fluorescence quenching of the N-CDs. Under the optimal experimental conditions, the linear range of Cu (II) is determined to be 0.05–25 μmol L−1, and the limit of detection is 23 nmol L−1 with the limit of quantitation of 77 nmol L−1. Besides, some characterizations are provided to verify the proposed principle. The method has been successfully applied for the detection of Cu (II) in human serum and environmental water with high sensitivity and higher selectivity.

Abstract:A new Naphthalene derivative with two urea groups, 1,8-bis[N-(o-methoxyphenyl)ureido]naphthalene (BMPUN), was synthesized for detecting Cu(II) ratiometrically. Complexation between urea groups of BMPUN and Cu(II) with high selectivity gives rise to a great red-shift from 380 to 440 nm in the emission spectra. The introduction of electron donating groups is helpful to increase the electron density of the nitrogen atom of urea groups and then enhance the ability of complexation for Cu(II).

Abstract:Abstract A solid fluorescence sensor composed of g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets and chitosan solid film was fabricated by electrostatic interaction. The g-C 3 N 4 nanosheet/chitosan solid film showed selectivity and sensitivity to Cu 2+ which was higher than that of other metal ions in common use. Cu 2+ ions were found to efficiently bind and quench the fluorescence of the g-C 3 N 4 nanosheet/chitosan solid film. The absorption band of the g-C 3 N 4 nanosheet/chitosan solid film was at 240 nm in the presence of Cu 2+ , and the maximum emission peak was at 380 nm. Copper ion concentrations were between 0 and 3.1 × 10 −5 mol/L at pH 7, the detection limit is 5 nM, compared with previous reports, it was much lower than before. Good linear relationships existed between the metal ion concentration and fluorescence intensity of g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets in the quenching and recovering processes. This is the first study to report on the detection of Cu 2+ by utilizing g-C 3 N 4 nanosheet/chitosan composite film. The as-prepared films were conveniently prepared, easy to operate, and recyclable, as well as sensitive and selective to detect Cu 2+ in water. All these features indicate the sensor’s potential application in disease diagnosis.

Abstract:The concept that HLA‐linked immune response genes may influence survival of patients with malignant disease has been investigated by performing HLA typing on a series of 150 patients with acute myelogenous leukemia. Patients with A1 and B8 and/or A2 and B12 survive longer than patients without either of these pairs of antigens in association. However, after correction of the statistical probability for the number of A and B locus combinations theoretically possible, these differences are not statistically significant. Clarification of this must await independent analysis of other series and more direct approaches to the study of immune response genes in man.
