Abstract:The crystalline-to-amorphous transformation in the solid state is currently the subject of intense study. With the seminal discovery of amorphization of H2O ice I under pressure1, interest has focused on the possible occurrence of pressure-induced amorphization in other systems, the thermodynamic and mechanistic basis of the process, and the relationship between amorphization by pressure and by other means2–5. Here we report in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements of α-quartz and coesite in a diamond-anvil cell that demonstrate that these crystalline materials transform to amorphous solids at 25–35 GPa and 300 K. We show that an internally consistent thermodynamic description of the process is possible, extending into the pressure domain recent thermodynamic calculations of thermally-induced amorphization of silica polymorphs4. The measurements provide constraints on the equations of state and melting relations in this system at high pressures, shed light on the mechanism for glass formation in SiO2 in laboratory shock-wave experiments and meteorite-impact events, and provide insights into the thermoelastic stability of tetrahedral network structures at high compression.

Abstract:Mineral component, metamorphic texture, and interface features of quartz veins (micro-metamorphic body) and their country rock in the low-temperature and high-pressure metamorphic rocks from Mulanshan, Hubei province have been investigated by optical microscope and electron probe microanalysis. The results show that these quartz veins, having undergone the same low-temperature and high-pressure metamorphism as minerals of country rock, are a kind of paratectonic recrystallization veins. Amorphous SiO2 formed at high-pressure and/or ultrahigh-pressure environment, which had partially been transformed into the nanocrystalline α-quartz, has been found in these quartz veins with transmission electron image, selected area electron diffraction and microarea chemical composition analysis. Furthermore, the decompression expansion phenomenon similar to pseudomorph coesite has been observed in transmission electron image. The appearance and the transforming feature of amorphous SiO2 is probably a super-microscopic evidence of subduction-obduction of blueschist rocks occurring in southern edge of high-pressure and ultrahigh-pressure metamorphic belts in Dabie mountains.

Abstract:Concurrent molecular dynamics simulations and ab initio calculations show that densification of silica under pressure follows a ubiquitous two-stage mechanism. First, anions form a close-packed sub-lattice, governed by the strong repulsion between them. Next, cations redistribute onto the interstices. In cristobalite silica, the first stage is manifest by the formation of a metastable phase, which was observed experimentally a decade ago, but never indexed due to ambiguous diffraction patterns. Our simulations conclusively reveal its structure and its role in the densification of silica.

Abstract:Single-crystal X-ray diffraction experiments on α-quartz at pressures to 15 GPa reveal structural instabilities that result in its gradual transition to an amorphous state. With increasing pressure the average SiO distance (≈ 1.61 ± 0.01 Å) and SiO4 tetrahedral volume (≈ 2.14 ± 0.02 Å3 remain constant. Compression of α-quartz results from a dramatic decrease in SiOSi angle and corresponding decrease in inter-tetrahedral (i.e., OO) distances. The onset of amorphization coincides with bending of all SiOSi angles to less than 120° and severe distortion of SiO4 tetrahedra, as oxygens approach a close-packed configuration.
Understanding phase transitions of $α$-quartz under dynamic compression conditions by machine-learning driven atomistic simulations

Abstract:Characteristic shock effects in silica serve as a key indicator of historical impacts at geological sites. Despite this geological significance, atomistic details of structural transformations under high pressure and shock compression remain poorly understood. This ambiguity is evidenced by conflicting experimental observations of both amorphization and crystallization transitions. Utilizing a newly developed machine-learning interatomic potential, we examine the response of $\alpha$-quartz to shock compression with a peak pressure of 60 GPa over nano-second timescales. We initially observe amorphization before recrystallization into a d-NiAs-structured silica with disorder on the silicon sublattice, accompanied by the formation of domains with partial order of silicon. Investigating a variety of strain conditions enables us to identify the non-hydrostatic stress and strain states that allow the direct diffusionless formation of rosiaite-structured silica.

Abstract:It has recently been shown that amorphization and melting of ice were intimately linked. In this letter, we infer from molecular dynamics simulations on the SiO2 system that the extension of the quartz melting line in the metastable pressure-temperature domain is the pressure-induced amorphization line. It seems therefore likely that melting is the physical phenomenon responsible for pressure induced amorphization. Moreover, we show that the structure of a "pressure glass" is similar to that of a very rapidly (1e+13 to 1e+14 kelvins per second) quenched thermal glass.

Abstract:The high-pressure behavior of SnI2 has been investigated in a combined experimental and theoretical study by angle-dispersive X-ray diffraction, Raman scattering measurements, and ab initio calculations. Both the Raman and XRD results confirm that the SnI2 crystal undergoes a gradual crystal to amorphous transition and subsequently recrystallizes to a new crystal structure upon compression. The intensity of the Sn-I symmetric stretching mode greatly decreases and manifests a red shift at 2.15 GPa in Raman spectra. The XRD patterns show a bonding break phenomenon before the pressure-induced amorphization. We propose that the bond breaking between neighboring layers leads to the formation of the amorphous phase under high pressure. The sample recrystallizes into a new high-pressure crystal phase at 33.18 GPa. The experimental and theoretical results provide a good candidate structure for the recrystallized phase with C2/m space group.

Abstract:Ubiquitous on Earth, alpha-quartz plays an important role in modern science and technology. However, despite extensive research in the past, themechanism of the polymorphic transitions of alpha-quartz at high pressures remains poorly understood. Here, combining in situ single-crystal x-ray diffraction experiment and advanced ab initio modeling, we report two stability limits and competing transition pathways of alpha-quartz under high pressure. Under near-equilibrium compression conditions at room temperature, alpha-quartz transits to a new P2/c silica phase via a structural intermediate. If the thermally activated transition is kinetically suppressed, the ultimate stability of alpha-quartz is controlled by its phonon instability and alpha-quartz collapses into a different crystalline phase. Our studies reveal that pressure-induced solid-state transformation of alpha-quartz undergoes a succession of structural stability limits, due to thermodynamic and mechanical catastrophes, and exhibits a hierarchy of transition pathways contingent upon kinetic conditions.

Abstract:The experimental results of phase transformation of silica are reviewed in this paper. Previous experimental results show that phase transformation boundaries between quartz, coesite, stishovite, CaCl2 structure and α-PbO2 structure under hydrostatic pressure condition are p(GPa)=(2.11±0.03)+(9.8×10-4±1.2×10-4)×T(℃), p(GPa)=(8.0±0.2)+(1.1×10-3±3×10-4)×T(℃), p(GPa)=(51±2)+(0.012±0.005)×T(K) and p(GPa)=98+(0.009 5±0.001 6)×T(K), respectively. Furthermore, we discuss the influence of non-hydrostatic pressure on the phase transformation of silica. Existing experimental results show that the confining pressure for phase transformation of silica decreases when differential stress is present. That is, the phase transformation boundary shifts to a lower pressure region under non-hydrostatic pressure conditions. Therefore, we extrapolated the two dimensional phase diagram to a three dimensional one, based on the experimental results of Zhou et al. to include the influence of differential stress on phase transformation of silica. At the end of the paper, the application of experimental results of phase transformation of silica to ultra high pressure metamorphism in the earth interior is discussed. We attempt to provide an alternative explanation of geologic data and thus to improve our understanding of geodynamic processes in earth.

Abstract:Phase transformation and optical properties of silica (silicon dioxide, SiO2) quartz sand under high pressure/temperature has been of interest in geology and optical physics for many years. In this study, besides high pressure/temperature, high plastic strain is simultaneously applied to the quartz sand by high‐pressure torsion (HPT) processing. The material shows oxygen vacancy formation and transformation to (i) a denser nanocrystalline quartz phase, (ii) a high‐temperature amorphous phase and (iii) a high‐pressure coesite phase. These structural and microstructural changes lead to light absorbance, electron spin resonance, photoluminscence and photocatalytic activity, while these changes are enhanced by increasing strain. This study introduces a possible pressure‐temperature‐strain‐based mechanism for the formation of naturally‐observed vacancies and coesite phase in SiO2‐based minerals and sands.

Abstract:Abstract Some low-coordination materials, including water, silica, and silicon, exhibit polyamorphism, having multiple amorphous forms. However, the microscopic mechanism and kinetic pathway of amorphous-amorphous transition (AAT) remain largely unknown. Here, we use a state-of-the-art machine-learning potential and local structural analysis to investigate the microscopic kinetics of AAT in silicon after a rapid pressure change. We find that the transition from low-density-amorphous (LDA) to high-density-amorphous (HDA) occurs through nucleation and growth, resulting in non-spherical interfaces that underscore the mechanical nature of AAT. In contrast, the reverse transition occurs through spinodal decomposition. Further pressurisation transforms LDA into very-high-density amorphous (VHDA), with HDA serving as an intermediate state. Notably, the final amorphous states are inherently unstable, transitioning into crystals. Our findings demonstrate that AAT and crystallisation are driven by joint thermodynamic and mechanical instabilities, assisted by preordering, occurring without diffusion. This unique mechanical and diffusion-less nature distinguishes AAT from liquid-liquid transitions.

Abstract:Pressure-induced phase transformation occurs during silicon (Si) wafering processes. \b{eta}-tin (Si-II) phase is formed at high pressures, followed by the transformation to Si-XII, Si-III or/and amorphous Si ({\alpha}-Si) phases during the subsequent decompression. While the imposed pressure and its release rate are known to dictate the phase transformation of Si, the effect of charge carriers are ignored. Here, we experimentally unveil that the increased hole concentration facilitates the amorphization in the pressure-induced phase transformation of Si. The underlying mechanism is elucidated by the theoretical calculations based on machine-learning interatomic potentials. The hole-facilitated amorphization is also experimentally confirmed to occur in the indented Ge, GaAs or SiC. We discover that hole concentration is another determining factor for the pressure-induced phase transformations of the industrially important semiconductors.

Stress-dependent Molecular Pathways of Silica–water Reaction

Abstract:Stress-corrosion of silica by water is studied by exploring the stress-dependent potential energy surface computed quantum mechanically at the level of molecular orbital theory. An ordered silica nanorod with clearly defined nominal tensile stress is constructed to model a structural unit of the stressed crack tip. Three competing hydrolysis reaction pathways are determined, each involving a distinct initiation step. Water dissociation, molecular chemisorption, and direct siloxane bond rupture dominate at low, intermediate, and high stress levels, respectively. A linear stress dependence in the thermodynamic driving force, not commonly considered in the criterion of brittle fracture initiation, is shown to originate from surface relaxation associated with bond rupture. This effect is particularly important in determining the Griffith condition of crack extension for nano-sized systems when spatial accommodation of foreign molecules is involved in the process of bond breaking. The physical origin of the stress dependence of kinetic barrier is revealed by a perturbation analysis of the minimum energy path parametrized by the continuous mechanical stress.

Abstract:At pH 7, amorphous silica has a characteristic negative charge due to the deprotonation of silanol groups on the surface. Electrokinetic phenomena and transport of biomolecules in devices depend sensitively on the surface morphology, distribution of ions and solvent, and adsorption properties of solutes close to the surface in the electrical double layer region. Hence, simulation of these phenomena requires detailed atomistic models of the double layer region. In this Article, we extend our undissociated silica surface model [J. Phys. Chem. B 2007, 111, 11181-11193] to include dissociated Si-O(-) groups, which interact with both water and salt (Na(+) and Cl(-)). We have also conducted ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations of a smaller system consisting of a hydrated silica slab. The radial distribution functions predicted by the empirical model are in qualitative agreement with those from the AIMD simulations. The hydrophobic and hydrophilic nature of silanol-poor and silanol-rich regions of the amorphous silica surface observed in our empirical model is reproduced in the AIMD simulations of the smaller slab. In the initial stages of our AIMD simulations, we observe various chemical processes that represent different hydroxylation mechanisms of the surface.

Abstract:Solid-state amorphization is a transformation that has been observed in a growing number of materials. Microscopic observations indicate that amorphization of a-quartz begins with formation of crystallographically controlled planar defects and is followed by growth of amorphous silicon dioxide at these defect sites. Similar transformation microstructures are found in quartz upon quasihydrostatic and nonhydrostatic compression in a diamond-anvil cell to 40 gigapascals and from simple comminution. The results suggest that there is a common mechanism for solid-state amorphization of silicates in static and shock high-pressure experiments, meteorite impact, and deformation by tectonic processes. In general, these results are consistent with recently proposed shear instability models of amorphization.
Stochastic Surface Walking Method for Crystal Structure and Phase Transition Pathway Prediction.

Abstract:The determination of crystal structures and the solid-to-solid phase transition mechanisms are two important and related subjects in material science. Here we develop an unbiased general-purpose potential energy surface (PES) searching method, namely, SSW-crystal method, for prediction of both the crystal structure and the crystal phase transition pathway. The SSW-crystal method features with stochastic surface walking (SSW) via repeated small structural perturbation by taking into account the second derivative information on both the lattice and the atom degrees of freedom. The SSW-crystal method is capable of overcoming the high barrier of phase transition and identifying the desirable phase transition reaction coordinates. By applying the SSW-crystal method to a set of examples, including SiO2 crystal up to 162 atoms per cell, Lennard-Jones model crystals up to 256 atoms, ternary SrTiO3 crystal of 50 atoms and the rutile-to-anatase TiO2 phase transition, we show that the SSW-crystal method can efficiently locate the global minimum (GM) from random initial structures without a priori knowledge of the system, and also allows for exhaustive sampling of the phase transition pathways, from which the lowest energy pathway can be obtained.

Abstract:Surfactant-containing periodic mesostructured silica materials, namely SBA-16 and FDU-12, were studied under pressures between 1 and 4 GPa and temperatures between 100 and 400 °C. At 4 GPa crystallization of coesite can be achieved already at 200 °C. The mild transition of amorphous to crystalline silica is believed to be accomplished by the inbuilt hydroxyl groups present in the starting material. At 2 GPa the crystallization of quartz is accomplished at a temperature of 400 °C. Both quartz and coesite are obtained in nanocrystalline form.

Abstract:As a flexible porous material, the amorphous behaviour of zeolitic imidazolate framework‐8 (ZIF‐8) has garnered considerable interest. However, the association between its strain behaviour and topology has not yet been exhaustively studied computationally. We perform molecular dynamic simulations on both ZIF‐8 and its topological silicate isomer Sodalite (SOD) to investigate the pressure‐induced development of the mid‐range and short‐range structures. We find that both ZIF‐8 and SOD undergo two successive transformations. The first is the amorphization process, which is characterised by the breakdown of the mid‐range structure without a significant change in the elastic modulus. The other type of densification involves a change in the short‐range structure, during which the mechanical properties are improved as the short‐range disorder increases. Abstract:α‐Quartz undergoes metastable phase transformations when statically compressed outside of its stability field at 300 K. Crystalline‐crystalline and crystalline‐amorphous transformations in α‐quartz are documented by a variety of techniques which probe the structure from macroscopic to interatomic length scales. Material recovered from static α‐quartz compression experiments exhibits a number of similarities to quartz experiencing shock compression and comminution.

Abstract:The process of a silica cluster impact on a crystal silicon substrate is studied by molecular dynamics simulation. At the impact loading stage, crystal silicon of the impact zone transforms to a locally ordered molten with increasing the local temperature and pressure of the impact zone. And then the transient molten forms amorphous silicon directly as the local temperature and pressure decrease at the impact unloading stage. Moreover, the phase behavior between the locally ordered molten and amorphous silicon exhibits the reversible structural transition. The transient molten contains not only lots of four-fold atom but also many three- and five-fold atoms. And the five-fold atom is similar to the mixture structure of semi-Si-II and semi-bct5-Si. The structure transformation between five- and four-fold atoms is affected by both pressure and temperature. The structure transformation between three- and four-fold atoms is affected mostly by temperature. The direct structure transformation between five- and three-fold atoms is not observed. Finally, these five- and three-fold atoms are also different from the usual five- and three-fold deficient atoms of amorphous silicon. In addition, according to the change of coordination number of atoms the impact process is divided into six stages: elastic, plastic, hysteresis, phase regressive, adhesion and cooling stages.
