However, little is known about the predictive role of RASSF1A methylation in postoperative upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC). We analyzed the methylation status of the RASSF1A promoter in UTUC and retrospectively investigated whether the RASSF1Apromoter methylation status provides prognostic information after surgeries. METHODS In a retrospective design, the methylation status of the RASSF1Apromoter at cytosine guanine dinucleotide islands (CpGIs) was analyzed using methylation-sensitive polymerase chain reaction on tumor specimens from 687 patients undergoing surgeries for primary UTUC. RESULTS Aberrant methylation for the RASSF1A gene promoter was detected in 183(26.6%) DNA samples in total. Epigenetic silencing of the RASSF1A gene was strongly associated with tobacco consumption (P=0.044), ipsilateral hydronephrosis (P<0.001), tumor location (P<0.001) and markers of tumor malignancy, including: higher tumor stage (pT3/4)(P=0.001), advanced tumor grade(G3)(P=0.007), lymph node metastasis(pN+)(P=0.001) and infiltrative growth pattern (sessile tumor architecture) (P=0.013). The unmethylated RASSF1A gene promoter was an independent risk factor for bladder recurrence (P<0.001, HR=2.123) and contralateral recurrence (P=0.030, HR=3.716) of UTUC after surgery. Additionally, tumor multifocality (P=0.002, HR=1.538) and ureteroscopy before surgery (P=0.001, HR=1.725) were independent risk factors for bladder recurrence in postoperative UTUC patients. Hypermethylated RASSF1A was predictive for improved bladder recurrence-free survival (P<0.001)(Figure 1B) and contralateral recurrence-free survival (P=0.021) (Figure 1C) in UTUC patients after surgery. Abstract:Aim: We conducted this study to identify gene promoter methylation status and clinical predictors for upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) patients. Materials & methods: Using methylation-sensitive PCR, we examined ten genes promoter methylation status in 687 UTUC patients. Results: A methylated promoter of three genes to predict higher tumor stage (T3 and T4), five genes to predict higher tumor grade (G3) and one gene to predict pN+ were certified in this study. Nine factors were significantly associated with poor cancer-specific survival. Six factors were considered as predictors to develop bladder recurrence after surgery. Conclusion: Methylation occurs commonly in UTUCs, may affect carcinogenic mechanisms, and is a well predictive factor for cancer-specific survival and bladder recurrence in UTUCs.

Abstract:BackgroundMuscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) accounts for approximately 20% of all urothelial bladder carcinomas (UBC) at time of diagnosis, and up to 30% of patients with non-muscle invasive UBC will progress to MIBC over time. An increasing body of evidence has revealed a strong correlation between aberrant DNA methylation and tumorigenesis in MIBC.ResultsUsing The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) molecular data for 413 patients, we described a DNA methylation-based signature as a prognostic factor for overall survival (OS) in MIBC patients. By using a least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) model, differentially methylated regions were first identified using multiple criteria followed by survival and LASSO analyses to identify DNA methylation probes related to OS and build a classifier to stratify patients with MIBC. The prognostic value of the classifier, referred to as risk score (RS), was validated in a held-out testing set from the TCGA MIBC cohort. Finally, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was used to compare the prognostic accuracy of the models built with RS alone, RS plus clinicopathologic features, and clinicopathologic features alone. We found that our seven-probe classifier-based RS stratifies patients into high- and low-risk groups for overall survival (OS) in the testing set (n = 137) (AUC at 3 years, 0.65; AUC at 5 years, 0.65). In addition, RS significantly improved the prognostic model when it was combined with clinical information including age, smoking status, Tumor (T) stage, and Lymph node metastasis (N) stage.ConclusionsThe DNA methylation-based RS can be a useful tool to predict the accuracy of preoperative and/or post-cystectomy models of OS in MIBC patients.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) accounts for the majority (80%-90%) of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) patients at the time of diagnosis, and approximately 15% of ccRCC patients will develop distant metastasis or recurrence during their lifetime. Increasing number of studies have revealed that the aberrant DNA methylations is closely correlated with the tumorigenesis in ccRCC.RESULTS:In this study, we utilized a LASSO (least absolute shrinkage and selection operator) model to identify a combination of 13 probes-based DNA methylation signature that associated with the progression-free survival (PFS) of ccRCC patients. First, differentially methylated regions (CpGs) related to PFS and phenotypes were identified. Next, prognostic DNA methylation probes were selected from the differentially methylated probes (DMPs) and calculated risk scores to stratify patients with ccRCC. The performance of this signature was validated in an independent testing set using various analyses, including Kaplan-Meier analysis for PFS and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. Based on our 13-DNA methylation probes signature, ccRCC patients were successfully stratified into high- and low-risk groups. Combining DNA methylation signature with clinical variables such as T stage, M stage and tumor grade could further improve the accuracy of prediction. Moreover, we highlight two molecular biomarkers (RCC1 and GDF6) corresponding to our probes. Invitro experiments showed that knockdown of RCC1 or GDF6 in ccRCC cell lines reduced cell proliferation, which indicated that both biomarkers are associated with tumorigenesis.CONCLUSIONS:The 13-probes-based DNA methylation signature has the potential to serve as an independent tool for survival outcome improvement and treatment strategy selection for ccRCC patients. In addition, our findings suggest that RCC1 and GDF6 may serve as promising markers for ccRCC.
DNA Methylation Architecture Provides Insight into the Pathogenesis of Upper Tract Urothelial Carcinoma: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract:Purpose: Numerous studies suggested methylation modifications play an important role in upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC), but few have depicted DNA methylation architecture on the pathological process of UTUC. We aimed to better understand the pathogenesis of UTUC and provide precision medicine references when managing UTUC patients. Methods: PubMed, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, and Scopus were searched for UTUC until December 31, 2020. Methodological quality assessment was conducted according to NIH recommendations. Meta-analysis was conducted to assess the prognostic effect of methylated genes. Kaplan-Meier survival analyses were performed to validate methylated genes and cytosine-phosphate-guanine (CpG) sites. Results: Eleven studies (3619 patients) were eligible to investigate 12 methylated genes and 10 CpGs. The quality of all the studies was fair to good. Meta-analysis found the pooled effect of eligible methylated genes had a low risk of tumor recurrence (HR = 0·67; 95% CI: 0·51-0·87; P = ·003), but a high risk of tumor progression (HR = 1·60; 95% CI: 1·17-2·18; P = ·003) and cancer-specific mortality (HR = 1·35; 95% CI: 1·06-1·72; P = ·01). For individual methylation status of GDF15, HSPA2, RASSF1A, TMEFF2, and VIM, the pooled effect of each gene was found pleiotropic on both diagnosis and prognosis. Survival analysis suggested higher methylation of SPARCL1 had a better disease-specific survival (P = ·048). Conclusion: We combined meta-analysis and Kaplan-Meier survival analysis using the most updated evidence on the methylation of UTUC. Candidate biomarkers with essential diagnosis and prognosis function might provide precision medicine references for personalized therapies.

Abstract:Background: This meta-analysis evaluated the clinicopathologic and prognostic significance of RASSP1A promoter methylation in renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Materials and methods: The ORs or HRs and their 95% CIs were calculated. Trial sequential analysis was conducted. Results: Twenty-two articles that included 1,421 patients with RCC and 724 controls were identified. RASSF1A promoter methylation correlated with RCC in tissue, blood, and urine samples. On multivariate analysis, RASSF1A promoter methylation was associated with tumor grade (grade 3-4 vs 1-2: OR=3.59), clinical stage (stage 3-4 vs 1-2: OR=2.15), T classification (pT2-4 vs pT1: OR=2.66), histologic subtypes (papillary vs clear cell: OR=2.91), and cancer-specific survival (HR=1.78), but it was not linked to age, gender, lymph node status, distant metastasis, or overall survival. The Cancer Genome Atlas data also showed that RASSF1A methylation was significantly more likely to be seen in papillary vs clear-cell RCC (OR=23.19). Conclusion: RASSP1A promoter methylation may be associated with the development and progression of RCC, as well as poor cancer-specific survival. Methylation was more frequent in papillary vs clear-cell RCC. More studies are needed to confirm these findings in blood or urine samples.

Abstract:RAS association domain family protein 1a (RASSF1A) is a putative tumor suppressor gene located on 3p21, has been regarded playing important roles in the regulation of different types of human tumors. Previous reports demonstrated that the frequency of RASSF1A methylation was significantly higher in patients group compared with controls, but the relationship between RASSF1A promoter methylation and pathological features or the tumor grade of bladder cancer remains controversial. Therefore, A meta-analysis of published studies investigating the effects of RASSF1A methylation status in bladder cancer occurrence and association with both pTNM (p, pathologic stage; T, tumor size; N, node status; M, metastatic status) and tumor grade in bladder cancer was performed in the study. A total of 10 eligible studies involving 543 cases and 217 controls were included in the pooled analyses. Under the fixed-effects model, the OR of RASSF1A methylation in bladder cancer patients, compared to non-cancer controls, was 8.40 with 95% CI = 4.96-14.23. The pooled OR with the random-effects model of pTNM and tumor grade in RASSF1A methylated patients, compared to unmethylated patients, was 0.75 (95% CI = 0.28-1.99) and 0.39 (95% CI = 0.14-1.09). This study showed that RASSF1A methylation appears to be an independent prognostic factor for bladder cancer. The present findings also require confirmation through adequately designed prospective studies.
Comparison of Clinicopathologic Characteristics, Epigenetic Biomarkers and Prognosis Between Renal Pelvic and Ureteral Tumors in Upper Tract Urothelial Carcinoma.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:There's no consensus about the difference between renal pelvic and ureteral tumors in terms of clinical features, pathological outcomes, epigenetic biomarkers and prognosis. METHODS:The data of 341 patients with renal pelvic tumors and 271 patients with ureteral tumors who underwent radical nephroureterectomy between 1999 and 2011 were retrospectively reviewed. The clinicopathologic features, gene promoters methylation status and oncologic outcomes were compared. Regression analysis was performed to identify oncologic prognosticators. RESULTS:Patients with ureteral tumors were relatively older (p = 0.002), and had higher likelihood of pre-operative renal insufficiency (p < 0.001), hypertension (p = 0.038) and hydronephrosis (P < 0.001), while in patients with renal pelvic tumors gross hematuria was more prevalent (p < 0.001). Renal pelvic tumors tended to exhibit non-organ-confined disease (p = 0.004) and larger tumor diameter (p = 0.001), while ureteral tumors had a higher likelihood of exhibiting high grade (p < 0.001) and sessile architecture (p = 0.023). Hypermethylated gene promoters were significantly more prevalent in renal pelvic tumors (p < 0.001), specifically for TMEFF2, GDF15, RASSF1A, SALL3 and ABCC6 (all p < 0.05). Tumor location failed to independently predict cancer-specific survival, overall survival, intravesical or contralateral recurrence (all p > 0.05), while gene methylation status was demonstrated to be an independent prognostic factor. CONCLUSION:Renal pelvic tumors and ureteral tumors exhibited significant differences in clinicopathologic characteristics and epigenetic biomarkers. Gene promoter methylation might be an important mechanism in explaining distinct tumor patterns and behaviors in UTUC.

Abstract:Objective Tumor metabolism has always been the focus of cancer research. SLC16A1, as a key factor in catalysis of monocarboxylate transport across the plasma membrane, has been found to be associated with the occurrence and metastasis of a variety of cancers, but its prognostic significance and mechanism in different tumors are still unclear. Methods Based on the gene expression matrix and clinical information of human cancer tissues acquired from TCGA and GTEX databases, the differential expression of SLC16A1 in different tumors and normal tissues was analyzed. To confirm the association between its expression, the mutation of MMRS gene, and the expression level of DNMTs. Univariate Cox regression was applied to analyze the association between SLC16A1 expression and patient prognosis. The effect of SLC16A1 expression on patient survival was examined by Kaplan Meier analysis. GSEA was used to identify related signaling pathways. Results The expression of SLC16A1 was differentially expressed in most tumors, especially in the urinary tract where it is commonly highly expressed, and differential expression of SLC16A1 in different clinical stages. SLC16A1 expression was significantly positively correlated with MMRS gene mutation and DNMTS expression. Moreover, high SLC16A1 expression was associated with poorer overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) in urological cancers. In particular, the results of the enrichment analysis showed that SLC16A1 was associated with processes such as cell adhesion and many signaling pathways affecting cell cycle were significantly enriched in the group with high-expressed SLC16A1. Conclusion SLC16A1 expression was upregulated in urological cancer. SLC16A1 may promote tumor development by regulating the epigenetic process of urological cancer and demonstrated a great potential as a prognostic biomarker of urological cancer patients.

RESULTS Methylation in tumor tissue was detected in 14.3% for ABCC6, 17.3% for BRCA1, 14.3% for CDH1, 49.9% for GDF15, 41.2% for HSPA2, 26.6% for RASSF1A, 34.4% for SALL3, 25.2% for THBS1, 43.2% for TMEFF2 and 63.2% for VIM. Among the 687 patients analyzed, the median follow-up were 65 months (range: 3–144) for CSS and 49 months (range: 2–144) for BRFS. 225(32.8%) patients died as a consequence of UTUC and 228(33.2%) patients developed bladder recurrence (BR) during the follow-up period. Older age (p<0.001), male sex (p=0.033), tumor multifocality (p=0.008), ipsilateral hydronephrosis (p<0.001), larger main tumor diameter (>5cm, p<0.001), higher tumor stage (p<0.001), positive N status (p=0.018), methylated TMEFF2 promoter (p=0.002) and unmethylated BRCA1 promoter (p=0.004) were significantly associated with poor CSS. Tumor multifocality (p=0.002), ureteroscopy history (p=0.001), lower tumor grade (p=0.046), unmethylated promoter of GDF15 (p=0.030) and RASSF1A (p=0.001) were considered as predictors to develop BR after surgery. CONCLUSIONS In conclusion, our results suggest that different classes and degrees of gene methylation could regulate tumor malignancy and progression. Predictive Value of Gene Methylation for Second Recurrence Following Surgical Treatment of First Bladder Recurrence of a Primary Upper-Tract Urothelial Carcinoma.

Abstract:The clinical relevance of aberrant DNA promoter methylation is being increasingly recognized in urothelial carcinoma. The present study was conducted to explore the methylation status of patients with upper-tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) who experienced bladder recurrence, and to evaluate the predictive value of gene methylation for second bladder recurrence and tumor progression. A total of 85 patients with primary UTUC, who experienced bladder recurrence after radical nephroureterectomy, were enrolled between January 2001 and December 2013. Using methylation-sensitive polymerase chain reaction, the promoter methylation statuses of 10 genes were analyzed in the bladder tumor specimens. Among the patient group, 32 patients experienced second bladder recurrence, and bladder progression was detected in 16. With the exception of BRCA1, the methylation rate of the majority of genes tended to gradually increase to varying extents with the number of recurrences; a smaller proportion of primary tumors exhibited gene methylation when compared with the first recurrent tumors and second recurrent tumors. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses revealed that unmethylated GDF15 [hazard ratio (HR)=0.36; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.14-0.92] and methylated VIM (HR=2.91; 95% CI, 1.11-7.61) in the first recurrent bladder tumor, as well as male gender (HR=2.28; 95% CI, 1.06-4.87), first recurrence interval <8 months (HR=2.34; 95% CI, 1.15-4.78) and primary UTUC tumor size ≥5 cm (HR=3.48; 95% CI, 1.43-8.45) were independent risk factors for a second bladder recurrence after surgery for the first bladder recurrence; the Harrell's concordance index (c-index) for the related nomogram was 0.71 (95% CI: 0.61-0.81). Furthermore, methylated CDH1 (HR=2.91; 95% CI, 1.08-7.77) and VIM (HR=4.91; 95% CI, 1.11-21.7) in the first recurrent bladder tumor, male gender (HR=3.6; 95% CI, 1.1-11.73), and primary tumor stage T2-T4 (HR=4.57; 95% CI, 1.22-17.13), multifocality (HR=3.64; 95% CI, 1.19-11.16) and size ≥5 cm (HR=3.1; 95% CI, 1.91-10.54) for the primary UTUC were considered to be predictors of tumor progression; the c-index for the nomogram was 0.88 (95% CI, 0.69-0.92). The present findings demonstrated that promoter methylation of cancer-related genes was frequently observed in patients with urothelial carcinoma, and that the gene methylation rate of certain genes tended to gradually increase with the number of bladder recurrences. This may be used as a predictive factor for a second bladder recurrence and tumor progression after the surgical treatment of the first bladder recurrence.

However, it is unknown that the predictive role of methylation to contralateral new upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) after radical nephroureterectomy (RNU). To evaluate the role of gene methylation in predicting contralateral UTUC recurrence after RNU. METHODS In a retrospective design, methylation of 10 genes was analyzed on tumor specimens belonging to 664 consecutive patients treated by RNU for primary UTUC. Median follow-up was 48 mo (range: 3–144 mo). Gene methylation was accessed by methylation-sensitive polymerase chain reaction, and we calculated the methylation index (MI), a reflection of the extent of methylation. The log-rank test and Cox regression were used to identify the predictor of contralateral UTUC recurrence. RESULTS Promoter methylation was present in 88.9% of UTUC. Fewer methylation and lower MI (P=0.001) were seen in the tumors with contralateral UTUC recurrence than the tumors without contralateral recurrence. High MI (P=0.007) was significantly correlated with poor cancer-specific survival. Multivariate analysis indicated that unmethylated RASSF1A (P=0.039), lack of bladder recurrence prior to contralateral UTUC (P=0.009), history of renal transplantation (P<0.001), and preoperative renal insufficiency (P=0.002) are independent risk factors for contralateral UTUC recurrence after RNU. CONCLUSIONS Methylation is frequent in UTUCs generally, and relative infrequent in tumors with contralateral UTUC recurrence. Detection of Serum RASSF1A Gene Promoter Methylation in Patients with Gastric Cancer

Abstract:Background: Ras association domain family 1A (RASSF1A) gene is a novel tumor suppressor gene, and methylation of its promoter region might be an important mechanism in the development and progress of gastrointestinal cancer. Aims: To identify the promoter methylation status of serum RASSF1A gene in patients with gastric cancer, and to investigate its potential use in the early diagnosis and prognosis assessment of gastric cancer. Methods: Promoter methylation status of serum RASSF1A gene was determined by methylation-specific polymerase chain reaction (MSP) in 47 patients with gastric adenocarcinoma, 30 patients with benign gastric disease and 30 healthy controls. In 16 patients with gastric adenocarcinoma, the resected cancerous tissues, paracancerous tissues as well as the pre- and post-operative blood samples were collected for controlled study. Results: The positivity rate of promoter methylation of serum RASSF1A gene in gastric adenocarcinoma patients (34.0%, 16/47) was significantly higher than that in benign gastric disease patients (3.3%, 1/30) and in healthy controls (0%) (P<0.01). In 16 gastric cancerous tissues, 5 (31.2%) had promoter methylation of RASSF1A gene. Of them 4 patients (80.0%) had promoter methylation of serum RASSF1A gene in both pre- and post-operative blood samples. No correlation was found between promoter methylation status of serum RASSF1A gene and gender, age, tumor differentiation, metastasis and serum carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) level in patients with gastric adenocarcinoma. Conclusions: Methylation of promoter region of serum RASSF1A gene is a promising biomarker for the early diagnosis and prognosis assessment of gastric cancer.

Abstract:RASSF1A is a novel putative tumor suppressor gene located in 3p21.3 region. The most common inactivation mechanism of RASSF1A is promoter hypermethylation, which is observed in multiple solid tumors including lung cancer. In the present study, we identified the methylation status of RASSF1A in lung cancer sera using methylation-specific PCR and analyzed its clinicopathological significance. Hypermethylation of RASSF1A was detected in 27 of 80 (33.8%) cancer patients but no benign pulmonary disease patients or healthy donors (P<0.001). RASSF1A hypermethylation was preferentially observed in small cell lung cancer (P=0.042), while no statistical difference was found among methylation frequencies of different subtypes of non-small cell lung cancer. RASSF1A methylation status was associated with differentiation (P=0.009) and stage (P=0.013), but not with gender, age or treatment. These findings suggest that serum RASSF1A hypermethylation is a promising molecular biomarker for lung cancer diagnosis.
Prognostic Value of Gene Methylation and Clinical Factors in Non–Muscle-Invasive Upper Tract Urothelial Carcinoma after Radical Nephroureterectomy

Abstract:The prognostic value of gene methylation and clinical factors of 192 non-muscle-invasive upper tract urothelial carcinomas (NMIUTUC) were retrospectively analyzed. Compared to upper tract urothelial carcinoma, NMIUTUC have good postoperative survival and similar intravesical recurrence rate but later recurrence. The nomogram has good performance and can be used to guide clinical decisions. Introduction: To systematically analyze the outcomes and prognostic value of gene methylation and clinical parameters in non-muscle-invasive upper tract urothelial carcinoma (NMIUTUC) after radical nephroureterectomy (RNU). Patients and Methods: The methylation status of 10 selected genes and clinical parameters of 192 NMIUTUC patients who received RNU and postoperative intravesical mitomycin were assessed. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression models were performed to evaluate the prognostic factors of cancer-specific mortality and intravesical recurrence. Results: For 192 NMIUTUC patients, 1-, 3-, and 5-year cancer-specific survival (CSS)/bladder recurrence-free survival (BRFS) rates were 98.4%/86.4%, 90.6%/74.6%, and 86.9%/62.4%, respectively. After the multivariate analysis, the methylation of ABCC6 (hazard ratio [HR], 3.46, P = .005), GDF15 (HR, 2.03, P = .002), multiple tumors (HR, 2.11, P = .049), impaired renal function (HR, 3.09, P = .004), and open RNU (HR, 2.14, P = .047) were independently associated with cancer-specific mortality, whereas the methylation of GDF15 (HR, 0.55, P = .022), RASSF1A (HR, 0.31, P = .006), multiple tumors (HR, 2.11, P = .002), and concomitant ipsilateral hydronephrosis (HR, 1.87, P = .022) were independently associated with intravesical recurrence after RNU. The c index of the multivariate model to predict cancer-specific mortality and intravesical recurrence was 0.81 and 0.78, respectively. Conclusion: As an early stage disease, NMIUTUC has better postoperative survival and later intravesical recurrence than upper tract urothelial carcinoma; however, the intravesical recurrence rate is not decreased. The nomogram can be used to accurately predict the oncologic outcomes of NMIUTUC patients and can be used to guide clinical decision making. (C) 2016 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Background Current knowledge about the molecular properties and prognostic markers of upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) is sparse and often based on bladder urothelial carcinoma (UC), which is thought to share common risk factors with UTUC. However, studies have suggested that differences exist regarding tumor behavior and molecular biology of these cancers, comprehensive investigations are needed to guide the clinical management of UTUC. In recent years, massively parallel sequencing has allowed insights into the biology of many cancers, and molecular prognostic markers based on this approach are rapidly emerging. The goal of this study was to characterize the gene expression patterns of UTUC using massively parallel sequencing, and identify potential molecular markers for prognosis in patients with UTUC. Methods We compared the genome-wide mRNA expression profile of cancer and matched normal tissues from 10 patients with UTUC to identify significantly deregulated genes. We also examined the protein levels of prognostic marker candidates in 103 patients with UTUC, and tested the association of these markers with overall survival using Kaplan-Meier model and Cox regression. Results Functional enrichment of significantly deregulated genes revealed that expression patterns of UTUC were characterized by disorders of cell proliferation and metabolism. And we also compared the expression profile of UTUC with that of bladder UC. Our results highlighted both shared (e.g. disorders of cell cycling and growth signal transduction) and tumor-specific (e.g. abnormal metabolism in UTUC and disruptions of adhesion pathways in bladder UC) features of these two cancers. Importantly, we identified that low protein expression of ALDH2 while high CCNE1 and SMAD3 were significantly associated with increased depth (*P <0.05) and lower overall survival (***P <0.0001) in an independent set of 103 patients. Multivariate Cox regression revealed that all these three genes were independent prognostic indicators in patients with UTUC (***P <0.001). Conclusions In conclusion, our study characterized the comprehensive expression profile of UTUC and highlighted both commons and differences in expression patterns between UTUC and bladder UC. And we, for the first time, revealed that ALDH2, CCNE1 and SMAD3 are associated with prognosis in patients with UTUC.
