Abstract:A stainless steel mesh cathode membrane modified by MnO2 and rGO (MnO2@rGO-SSM) was developed for a microbial fuel cell-membrane bioreactor (MFC-MBR) system. The stainless steel membrane was successfully coated with MnO2 and rGO through electrodeposition. The wastewater used in this experiment was synthetic wastewater simulating domestic sewage. A improvement in bioelectricity generation was achieved with the modified mesh, reaching a maximum power density of 1.59 W/m3, which is a five-fold increase compared to the unmodified mesh. In addition, MnO2@rGO-SSM has been found to possess excellent anti-pollution capability, with transmembrane pressure (TMP) increasing to only 19 kPa in 15 days, compared to 31 kPa for the unmodified mesh. This was due to the fact that MnO2@rGO-SSM amplified the electric field strength on the surface of the film, which affected the electronegativity of the sludge mixture (digested sludge from the suburban wastewater treatment plant in Lanzhou City), thus preventing the membrane blocking. In the meantime, the modified mesh applied in MFC-MBR also demonstrated excellent performance in pollutant removal, with chemical oxygen demand (COD) and ammonia removal of up to 93 % and 97.8 %, respectively. Finally, based on the above excellent performance, the system was also effective in removing COD and ammonia nitrogen from actual wastewater.
