Abstract:AbstractIntroducing magnetic switchability into artificial molecular machines is fascinating for precise control of magnetism via external stimuli. Herein, a field‐induced CoII single‐molecule magnet was found to exhibit the reversible switch of Jahn–Teller distortion near room temperature, along with thermal conformational motion of the 18‐crown‐6 rotor, which pulls the coordinated H2O to rotate through intermolecular hydrogen bonds and triggers a single‐crystal‐to‐single‐crystal phase transition with Twarm=282 K and Tcool=276 K. Interestingly, the molecular magnetic anisotropy probed by single‐crystal angular‐resolved magnetometry revealed the reorientation of easy axis by 14.6°. Moreover, ON/OFF negative magnetodielectric effects were respectively observed in the high‐/low‐temperature phase, which manifests the spin‐lattice interaction in the high‐temperature phase could be stronger, in accompanied by the hydrogen bonding between the rotating 18‐crown‐6 and the coordinated H2O.

Abstract:The redox non-innocent ligand 2,2'-bipyrimidine (bpym) reacted with two molar equivalents of LCo(tol) (L = CH(MeC[double bond, length as m-dash]NAr)2, Ar = 2,6-iPr2C6H3) to afford the binuclear CoII complex (LCo)2(μ-bpym) (1), in which the bpym moiety accepts two electrons from the metal centers and in the dianion state. Complex 1 readily underwent one-electron oxidation when treated with [Cp2Fe]+[BPh4]- affording the cation salt [(LCo)2(μ-bpym)][BPh4] (2) with the bpym moiety in the radical anion state. Meanwhile, complex 2 could be converted back to 1 with elemental potassium. The magnetic studies revealed that complex 2 is a single molecular magnet (SMM) under a small external field, while 1 has no SMM activity. This represents a new example of a SMM exhibiting a fully reversible 'on/off' switching ability in anodic and neutral states.

Abstract:Multifunctional materials that exhibit different physical properties in a single phase have potential for use in multifunctional devices. Herein, we reported an organic-inorganic hybrid compound [(18-crown-6)K][Fe(1)Cl(1)4]0.5[Fe(2)Cl(2)4]0.5 (1) by incorporating KCl and FeCl3 into the 18-crown-6 molecular which acts as a host of the six O atoms affording lone-pair electrons to anchor the guest potassium cation, and [FeCl4] as a counter ion for charge balance to construct a complex salt. This salt exhibited a one-step reversible structural transformation to give two separate high and low temperature phases at 373 K, which was confirmed by systematic characterizations including differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements, variable-temperature structural analyses, and dielectric, impedance, variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements. Interestingly, the structural transformation was coupled to both hysteretic dielectric phase transition, conductivity switch and magnetic phase transition at 373 K. This novel result gives an idea for designing a new type of phase-transition materials harbouring technologically important magnetic, conductivity and dielectric properties.

Abstract:Two neutral mononuclear iron(II) complexes with different spin-crossover (SCO) properties, Fe(L1)2(SCN)2 (1) and Fe(L2)2(SCN)2 (2) (L1 = 2-(thiophen-3-yl)-1H-imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthroline and L2 = 2-(thiophen-2-yl)-1H-imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthroline), were solvothermally synthesized. With the different substituted position in 1,10-phenanthroline derivatives, 1 exhibits gradual SCO around room temperature with T1/2 = 280 K, while 2 displays abrupt SCO with 10 K hysteresis at T1/2↓ = 210 K and T1/2↑ = 220 K.

Abstract:The magnetic bistability of spin-crossover (SCO) materials is highly appealing for applications as molecular switches and information storage. However, switching of the spin state around room temperature remains challenging. In this work, we reported the successful manipulation of the spin states of two iron(II) complexes (1-Fe and 2-Fe) based on pyridylacylhydrazone ligands in manifold ways. Both complexes are stabilized in the low-spin (LS) state at room temperature because of the strong ligand-field strength imposed by the ligands. 2-Fe shows thermoinduced SCO above room temperature with a very large and reproducible hysteresis (>50 K), while 1-Fe remains in the LS state up to 400 K. Acidity-driven spin-state switching of the two complexes was achieved at room temperature as a result of the complex dissociation and release of iron(II) in its high-spin (HS) state. Recovery of the complex is feasible upon further alkalization treatment in the case of 1-Fe, allowing bidirectional modulation of the spin state of the metal center. Light-driven one-way switching from LS to HS is also achieved by virtue of E-to-Z isomerization at the C═N double bond, which results in dissociation of the complex because of the poor binding affinity in the Z configuration.

A Trinuclear {feiii2feii} Complex Involving Both Spin and Non-Spin Transitions Exhibits Three-Step and Wide Thermal Hysteresis

Abstract:The engineering of switchable molecules with magnetic multistability is lying on the cutting-edge research topics for integrating multi-switches and ternary memory devices. Here we presented a cyanide-bridged {FeIII2FeII} desolvated complex {[(pzTp)FeIII-(CN)3]2[FeII(L)]} (1), obtained through single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) transformation from its solvated phase {[(pzTp)-FeIII(CN)3]2[FeII(L)]}·2CH3OH·5H2O (1·sol). Remarkably, 1 exhibited unprecedented three-step transition in magnetization with wide thermal hysteresis (44, 40, and 36 K) in the temperature range of 80–320 K. The detailed studies demonstrated that the tristable character originates from both an order-disorder structural phase transition (SPT) and a strongly cooperative two-step spin crossover (SCO) process. This work thus provides a new promising strategy for realizing multiple bistablity in magnetization by introducing two different transitions.

Abstract:Manipulating the synergy between magnetic and optical characteristics in a predictable manner by an external stimulus is a highly desirable option to develop smart materials for advanced applications such as information processing and storage in multifunctional devices. Herein we report dinuclear complexes Ln2L2(depma2)Cl2 (1-Ln, Ln = Dy, Gd; H2L = N1,N3-bis(salicylideneimino)diethylenetriamine, depma2 = photodimerized 9-diethylphosphonomethylanthracene) where the lanthanide ions possess pseudo-D5h geometries with five equatorial positions occupied by L2− and the axial positions by depma2 and the Cl− anion. depma2 acts as a bridge between the equivalent LnIII ions and can be opened and closed upon heating and light irradiation. 1-Ln experience consecutive structural transformations, first separation of the depma2 at ca. 170 °C and second elimination of chloroethane at ca. 250 °C, accompanied by a synergetic switch of the photoluminescence and magnetic dynamics for 1-Dy.

Abstract:Magnetic switchable maleonitriledithiolate (mnt) complexes were studied by density functional theory. The calculations were performed for anion dimers of [RBzPyR'][Ni(mnt)(2)] (RBzPyR' = derivatives of benzylpyridinium) to elucidate magnetostructural correlations and the nature of the weak intermolecular chemical bonding. The calculated results showed that the spin delocalization, favored by the eclipsed stacking and the shorter interlayer distance, was responsible for the diamagnetic character of [1-benzyl-4-aminopyridinium][Ni(mnt)(2)] at low temperature. The weak antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic interactions were also reproduced for [1-benzyl-4-aminopyridinium][Ni(mnt)(2)] and [1-(4'-fluorobenzyl)pyridinium][Ni(mnt)(2)] at high temperature, respectively. The natural bond orbital analysis suggested that the cooperative effect of the weak intermolecular bondings may be the intrinsic driving force resulting in the switchable property, which is essentially similar to those in organic radicals exhibiting magnetic bistability. Further investigations with varying interlayer distance d, the extent of slippage (slipping distance r and deviation angle alpha), and rotational angle theta suggested that the extent of slippage played an important role in magnetic interactions. Therefore, the abrupt modulation of the extent of slippage in the [Ni(mnt)(2)](-) complexes by external perturbations provided new possibilities for the design of molecular magnetic switching devices.

Abstract:In the search for multifunctional molecular materials, we designed an enantiopure pair of FeII complexes with chiral, chelating (R)/(S)‐4,5‐pinenepyridyl‐2‐pyrazine ligands exhibiting three inherent physical properties: chirality, spin crossover, and dielectric switching. The geometrical change resulted in coupling of the spin‐crossover transition at 187 K to dielectric switching. Both compounds were found to display light‐induced spin crossover that was thermally unstable above ca. 40 K. The coupling of two hysteretic properties, electric and magnetic, renders these compounds as potential switching devices.

Abstract:Two organic–inorganic hybrid complexes, (CH3NH3)Na[Fe(CN)5NO]·H2O (1) and (CH3NH3)2[Fe(CN)5NO] (2), which exhibit stepwise dielectric switching as well as photo-induced structural transformation, are synthesized and examined. In these two compounds, the photo-responsive complex anions, [Fe(CN)5NO]2–, connected by Na+ through N–Na coordination bonds or CH3NH3+ through N···H–N hydrogen bonds, form two-dimensional structures. One organic cation, CH3NH3+, that resides in the intralaminar cavity and plays a role as a template, undergoes a temperature-controlled order–disorder structural phase transition. As the frozen–thawed state change of the polar organic cations modifies the polarizability of materials, stepwise dielectric switching is observed at the phase transition temperature. Furthermore, the photo-induced linkage isomerism of [Fe(CN)5NO]2– building block survives in the new compounds at the low-temperature range, which is verified by variable-temperature IR spectra after photo-irradiation. Abstract:The nonvolatile behaviors of magnetically correlated anisotropic resistive switching in Co/0.7 Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3-0.3PbTiO(3) (Co/PMN-PT) multiferroic heterostructures are systematically investigated. When the polarization state of PMN-PT is reversed, a non-volatile anisotropic resistivity switch occurs, corresponding to the non-volatile 90 degrees-rotation of magnetic-easy-axis in Co film owing to the competition between magnetoelastic and interfacial anisotropies. The anisotropic magnetoresistivities (AMR) between two opposite polarization states in a field below anisotropic field also show a 90 degrees phase-shift. While at fields above anisotropic field, the AMR reveals the asymmetric cos(2)(theta)-like behaviors. The AMR manipulated by electric and magnetic fields is of benefit for studying the magnetization rotation processes. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:We investigate giant magnetoelectric coupling at a Mn3+ spin crossover in [MnIIIL]BPh4 (L = (3,5-diBr-sal)2323) with a field-induced permanent switching of the structural, electric, and magnetic properties. An applied magnetic field induces a first-order phase transition from a high spin/low spin (HS-LS) ordered phase to a HS-only phase at 87.5 K that remains after the field is removed. We observe this unusual effect for DC magnetic fields as low as 8.7 T. The spin-state switching driven by the magnetic field in the bistable molecular material is accompanied by a change in electric polarization amplitude and direction due to a symmetry-breaking phase transition between polar space groups. The magnetoelectric coupling occurs due to a γη2 coupling between the order parameter γ related to the spin-state bistability and the symmetry-breaking order parameter η responsible for the change of symmetry between polar structural phases. We also observe conductivity occurring during the spin crossover and evaluate the possibility that it results from conducting phase boundaries. We perform ab initio calculations to understand the origin of the electric polarization change as well as the conductivity during the spin crossover. Thus, we demonstrate a giant magnetoelectric effect with a field-induced electric polarization change that is 1/10 of the record for any material.

Abstract:The on-off switching of spin-crossover (SCO) and single-molecule magnetism (SMM) remains highly attractive, especially if it involves dynamic crystal-to-crystal transformation. Herein we report the first molecule, a mononuclear cobalt(ii) complex, that exhibits on-off switching between SCO and SMM reversibly during crystal-to-crystal transformation. Subtle structural transformation triggered by a simple dehydration-rehydration process induces significant geometrical changes of the Co-II center and modification of the supramolecular interactions and switches its colour and magnetic properties (dark red/SCO-on/SMM-off <-> orange/SCO-off/SMM-on). This work suggests that modification of the weak supramolecular interactions could be very effective in achieving switchable materials involving both SCO and SMM properties.
Reversible on–off switching of a single-chain magnet via single-crystal-to- single-crystal transition- and light-induced metal-to-metal electron transfer

Abstract:The development of single-chain magnets with reversible and adjustable properties is of great significance for achieving high-density information storage and switching devices with multi-stimuli responsiveness whilst remains a challenging task. In this work, we synthesized a new cyano-bridged {Fe 2 Co}-based coordination polymer, {[( Pz Tp)Fe(CN) 3 ] 2 Co(Ipi) 2 }·2MeOH·0.5H 2 O ( 1·solv ; pz Tp, tetra-kis(1-pyrazolyl)borate; Ipi, 1-(4-iodophenyl)-1H-imidazole). 1·solv displayed reversible metal-to-metal electron transfer (MMET) between Fe III LS ( μ -CN)Co II HS ( μ -NC)Fe III LS (LS, low spin; HS, high spin) and Fe III LS ( μ -CN)Co III LS ( μ -NC)Fe II LS states under alternating irradiations with 808 and 532 nm lasers, respectively, as verified by photomagnetic and in-situ photo-monitored X-ray diffraction studies. The bidirectional light irradiations induced significant changes in magnetic anisotropy and intrachain exchange interactions, demonstrating the on/off switching of single-chain magnet (SCM) behavior by 808 and 532 nm light irradiations. 1·solv underwent a thermally induced single-crystal to single-crystal (SCSC) phase transition to a desolvated {[( Pz Tp)Fe(CN) 3 ] 2 Co(Ipi) 2 } ( 1·desolv ) phase, accompanying with the MMET. Magnetic susceptibilities measurements indicated that 1·desolv exhibited thermally induced incomplete MMET behavior and field-induced nanomagnet behavior. 1·desolv also displayed a substantial dielectric anomaly during the electron transfer process, presenting a new case showing the synergetic switching of dielectric and magnetic properties. Interestingly, 1·desolv can revert to the solvated phase 1·resolv after soaking in the mother liquor, whose SCM behavior was erased by the reversible SCSC transition. This study provides a new approach for the swift and reversible control of SCM behavior via both SCSC transition and light-induced MMET.

Abstract:All-electrical and programmable manipulations of ferromagnetic bits are highly pursued for the aim of high integration and low energy consumption in modern information technology. Methods based on the spin-orbit torque switching in heavy metal/ferromagnet structures have been proposed with magnetic field, and recently are heading toward deterministic switching without external magnetic field. Here we demonstrate that an in-plane effective magnetic field can be induced by an electric field without breaking the symmetry of the structure of the thin film, and realize the deterministic magnetization switching in a hybrid ferromagnetic/ferroelectric structure with Pt/Co/Ni/Co/Pt layers on PMN-PT substrate. The effective magnetic field can be reversed by changing the direction of the applied electric field on the PMN-PT substrate, which fully replaces the controllability function of the external magnetic field. The electric field is found to generate an additional spin-orbit torque on the CoNiCo magnets, which is confirmed by macrospin calculations.
