Abstract:Herein, hexaazamacrocyclic ligand LN6 was employed to construct a series of photochromic rare-earth complexes, [Ln(LN6)-(NO3)2](BPh4) [1-Ln, Ln = Dy, Tb, Eu, Gd, Y; LN6 = (3E,5E,10E,12E)- 3,6,10,13-tetraaza-1,8(2,6)-dipyridinacyclotetradecaphane-3,5,10,12-tet-raene]. The behavior of photogenerated radicals of hexaazamacrocyclic ligands was revealed for the first time. Upon 365 nm light irradiation, complexes 1-Ln exhibit photochromic behavior induced by photo-generated radicals according to EPR and UV-vis analyses. Static and dynamic magnetic studies of 1-Dy and irradiated product 1-Dy* indicate weak ferromagnetic interactions among DyIII ions and photogenerated LN6 radicals, as well as slow magnetization relaxation behavior under a 2 kOe applied field. Further fitting analyses show that the magnetization relaxation in 1-Dy* is markedly different from 1-Dy. Time-dependent fluorescence measurements reveal the characteristic luminescence quenching dynamics of lanthanide in the photochromic process. Especially for irradiated product 1-Eu*, the luminescence is almost completely quenched within 5 min with a quenching efficiency of 98.4%. The results reported here provide a prospect for the design of radical-induced photochromic lanthanide single-molecule magnets and will promote the further development of multiresponsive photomagnetic materials.

Abstract:Molecules with multifunctional properties are of immense interest in hybrid materials, while challenges still existed because of the limited compatibility of multiple functionalities in a single system. In this work, a series of metal-organic complexes were synthesized and characterized under the assembly of electron donor phosphonate, electron acceptor polypyridine ligand and spin carrier rare earth ions. All the compounds exhibited remarkable and reversible responses with photochromism and photomodulated fluorescence, originated from photogenerated radicals via electron transfer from phosphonates to polypyridine ligands. For the Dy analog, slow magnetic relaxation was observed at cryogenic temperature, indicating the single-molecule magnetic behavior. Furthermore, photogenerated radicals could enhance the proton conductive behavior, with about 2 times larger in magnitude after light irradiation for Dy and Y compounds. The introduction of photoluminescence, magnetism and proton conduction into metallic phosphonates can provide potential applications for photochromic materials.

Abstract:Manipulating the synergy between magnetic and optical characteristics in a predictable manner by an external stimulus is a highly desirable option to develop smart materials for advanced applications such as information processing and storage in multifunctional devices. Herein we report dinuclear complexes Ln2L2(depma2)Cl2 (1-Ln, Ln = Dy, Gd; H2L = N1,N3-bis(salicylideneimino)diethylenetriamine, depma2 = photodimerized 9-diethylphosphonomethylanthracene) where the lanthanide ions possess pseudo-D5h geometries with five equatorial positions occupied by L2− and the axial positions by depma2 and the Cl− anion. depma2 acts as a bridge between the equivalent LnIII ions and can be opened and closed upon heating and light irradiation. 1-Ln experience consecutive structural transformations, first separation of the depma2 at ca. 170 °C and second elimination of chloroethane at ca. 250 °C, accompanied by a synergetic switch of the photoluminescence and magnetic dynamics for 1-Dy.
Synergism of Light-Induced [4 + 4] Cycloaddition and Electron Transfer Toward Switchable Photoluminescence and Single-Molecule Magnet Behavior in a Dy4 Cubane

Abstract:Molecular materials possessing switchable magneto-optical properties are of great interest due to their potential applications in spintronics and molecular devices. However, switching their photoluminescence (PL) and single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior via light-induced structural changes still constitutes a formidable challenge. Here, a series of cubane structures were synthesized via self-assembly of 9-anthracene carboxylic acid (HAC) and rare-earth ions. All complexes exhibited obvious photochromic phenomena and complete PL quenching upon Xe lamp irradiation, which were realized via the synergistic effect of photogenerated radicals and [4 + 4] photocycloaddition of the AC components. The quenched PL showed the largest fluorescence intensity change (99.72%) in electron-transfer photochromic materials. A reversible decoloration process was realized via mechanical grinding, which is unexpectedly in the electron-transfer photochromic materials. Importantly, an SMM behavior of the Dy analog was observed after room-temperature irradiation due to the photocycloaddition of AC ligands and the photogenerated stable radicals changed the electrostatic ligand field and magnetic coupling. Moreover, based on the remarkably photochromic and photoluminescent properties of these compounds, 2 demos were applied to support their application in information anti-counterfeiting and inkless printing. This work, for the first time utilizing the simultaneous modulation of photocycloaddition and photogenerated radicals in one system, realizes complete PL quenching and light-induced SMM behavior, providing a dynamical switch for the construction of multifunctional polymorphic materials with optical response and optical storage devices.

Abstract:Artificial smart materials with switchable multifunctionality are of immense interest owing to their wide application in sensors, displays and memory devices. Lanthanide complexes are promising multifunctional materials integrating optical and magnetic characteristics. However, synergistic manipulation of different physical properties in lanthanide systems is still challenging. Herein we designed and synthesized a mononuclear complex [DyIII(SCN)3(depma)2(4-hpy)2] (1), which incorporates 9-diethylphosphonomethylanthracene (depma) as a photo-active component and 4-hydroxypyridine (4-hpy) as a polar component. This compound shows several unusual features: (a) reversible thermo-responsive phase transition associated with the order-disorder transition of 4-hpy and SCN-, which leads to thermochromic behavior and dielectric anomaly; (b) reversible photo-induced dimerization of anthracene groups, which leads to synergistic switching of luminescence, magnetic and dielectric properties. To our knowledge, compound 1 is the first example of lanthanide complexes that show stimuli-triggered synergistic and reversible switching of luminescence, magnetic and dielectric properties.

Abstract:Lanthanide-based single-molecule magnets (Ln-SMMs) showing a synergistic magnetic and photoluminescence change in response to external stimuli are very attractive due to their potential applications in information storage, spintronics, and devices. In this paper, we report two dysprosium complexes containing Dy2O2 motifs and anthracene units, namely [Dy2(SCN)4(L)2(dmpma)2(H2O)2] (1) and [Dy2(SCN)4(L)2(depma)2(H2O)2] (2), where HL stands for 2,6-dimethoxyphenol, dmpma is 9-dimethylphosphonomethylanthracene, and depma is 9-diethylphosphonomethylanthracene. Both exhibit slow magnetization relaxation at zero dc field, characteristic of SMM behavior. Interestingly, complex 2 shows two thermally activated relaxation processes, attributed to the presence of disordered anthracene groups. The effective energy barriers are 117.7 K for 1 and 48.4 and 110.8 K for 2. Under 395 nm UV light irradiation, compounds 1 and 2 undergo a [4 + 4] photocycloaddition reaction to form [Dy2(SCN)4(L)2(dmpma2)(H2O)2]n (1UV) and [Dy2(SCN)4(L)2(depma2)(H2O)2]n center dot nH2O (2UV) with linear chain structures, where the structural transformation of complex 2 occurs in a single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SC-SC) fashion. Synergistic changes in photoluminescence and SMM behavior were observed for both compounds before and after light irradiation. The results show that the photodimerization of anthracene groups not only inhibits the magnetic relaxation in 1 and 2 and increases the magnetization reversal barrier (172.0 K for 1UV, 120.5 K for 2UV) but also eliminates the anthracene group disorder in compound 2, leading to a significant change in the magnetic dynamics from a dual-relaxation to a single-relaxation process.

Abstract:Lanthanide-based extended coordination frameworks showing photocontrolled single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior were prepared by combining highly anisotropic Dy(III) and Ho(III) ions with the carboxylato-functionalized photochromic molecule 1,2-bis(5-carboxyl-2-methyl-3-thienyl)perfluorocyclopentene (H2 dae), which acts as a bridging ligand. As a result, two new compounds of the general formula [{Ln(III) 2 (dae)3 (DMSO)3 (MeOH)}⋅10 MeOH]n (M=Dy for 1 a and Ho for 2) and two additional pseudo-polymorphs [{Dy(III) 2 (dae)3 (DMSO)3 (H2 O)}⋅x MeOH]n (1 b) and [{Dy(III) 2 (dae)3 (DMSO)3 (DMSO)}⋅x MeOH]n (1 c) were obtained. All four compounds have 2D coordination-layer topologies, in which carboxylate-bridged Ln2 units are linked together by dae(2-) anions into grid-like frameworks. All four compounds exhibited a strong reversible photochromic response to UV/Vis light. Moreover, both 1 a and 2 show field-induced SMM behavior. The slow magnetic relaxation of 1 a is influenced by the photoisomerization reaction leading to the observation of the cross-effect: photocontrolled SMM behavior.

Abstract:Photo-responsive lanthanide-based single-molecule magnets (SMM) hold great promise for future switching and memory devices. Herein, we report a dysprosium phosphonate [DyIII(SCN)2(NO3)(depma)2(4-hpy)2] (1Dy), which features a supramolecular framework containing layers of hydrogen-bonding network and pillars of π-π interacted anthracene units. The photocycloaddition reaction of anthracene pairs led to a rapid and reversible single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SC-SC) structural transition to form the 1D coordination polymer [DyIII(SCN)2(NO3)(depma2)(4-hpy)2]n (2Dy), accompanied by photoswitchable SMM properties with the reduction of effective energy barrier by half and the narrowing of the butterfly-like hysteresis loop. The diluted sample showed a photo-induced switch of the blocking temperature (TB) from 3.8 K for 1Dy@Y to 2.6 K for 2Dy@Y. This work may inspire the construction of lanthanide-based molecular materials with targeted photo-responsive magnetic properties.

Abstract:Fluorescent photoswitching molecules in which photochromic diarylethene with terpyridine units (tpy) attached via a phenylene linker to the thiophene rings were synthesized. Both compounds exhibited pronounced photochromic properties. Irradiation of the open form of compounds 1 and 2 with UV light resulted in immediate photocyclization to the blue closed form; the colorless open forms could be regenerated by irradiation with visible light. In terms of potential use for optical data storage and readout, compounds 1 and 2 display fluorescence discrimination between their open and closed form. This fluorescence switching could be the basis of a nondestructive readout method. And the complexation of these two compounds with metal ions was also studied. It is amazing to find the addition of Zn2+ lead the emission wavelengths of 2a red shift up to 105nm. This unique phenomenon makes the compound 2a, a candidate for the chemical sensor for zinc.

Abstract:By incorporating diprotonated terpyridine cations and hexacyanometalate( III ) anions into supramolecular hybrid salts, formulated as (HTPY)(H 2 TPY)[M III (CN) 6 ]·5H 2 O where TPY = 2,2′:6′,2′′-terpyridine, M = Fe (1), Co(2), room temperature photoinduced electron transfer (PET) was achieved with the involvement of a [M III (CN) 6 ] 3− ion. Characterization of the intrinsic nature unfolded unprecedented light-induced off→on magnetization and slow magnetic relaxation behaviour occurring for the M = Co analogue, which paves a promising way for photo-responsive multifunctional molecular materials.

Switchable 2,3-Dithienylmaleimide Bonded to Different Fluorophores: Synthesis and Photochromic Properties

Abstract:A series of photochromic diarylethene derivatives containing different fluorophores was synthesized by the Sonogashira coupling reaction and characterized by 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), 13 C NMR and mass spectroscopy. Photochromic conversion of Cz-MS was observed and its structural change was confirmed by proton NMR. Switchable absorption and emission phenomena were observed for these molecules. These phenomena were attributed to the reversible photochromic fluorescence resonance energy transfer (pcFRET) process. The design of this novel photochromic system of Py-4MS enables information to be processed in a non-destructive manner. This overcomes the problem of the destructive nature of tracking photochromism using ultraviolet (UV)-vis spectroscopy.
Reversible ON–OFF Switching of Single-Molecule-magnetism Associated with Single-Crystal-to-single-crystal Structural Transformation of a Decanuclear Dysprosium Phosphonate

Abstract:{Dy5(EDDC)2(μ3-AcO)2(μ5-C15H11PO3)(μ4-C15H11PO3)(μ2-AcO)2(AcO)2(H2O)(CH3OH)2}2(μ4-C2O4)·xH2O (I), where H2EDDC is N',N'',E,N',N'',E-N',N''-(ethane-1,2-diylidene)dipyrazine-2-carbohydrazide and C15H11PO3H2 is 9-anthrylmethylphosphonic acid, is found to undergo two consecutive single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformations. The first is under UV irradiation (λ = 365 nm for 3 d in air) to {Dy5(EDDC)2(μ3-AcO)2(μ5-C15H11PO3)2(μ2-AcO)2(AcO)2(H2O)3}2(μ4-C2O4)·xH2O (I-UV) where the two CH3OH are replaced by two H2O and the second by annealing under N2 at 100 °C on a diffractometer or under Ar in a glovebox to {Dy5(EDDC)2(μ3-AcO)2(μ5-C15H11PO3)2(μ2-AcO)4(H2O)}2(μ4-C2O4) (I-A-N2 or I-A-Ar) where it has lost two H2O molecules. The second transformation is reversible by exposure to air at room temperature (I-A-N2-cool). While the overall structures are the same (retaining the space group P21/c), there is a considerable expansion of the unit cell from I (8171 Å3) to I-UV (8609 Å3) and I-A-N2 (8610 Å3) and the coordinations of the Dy atoms undergo major reconstructions. This is associated with switching the single-molecule-magnetism (SMM) from OFF for I to ON for I-UV and to OFF again for I-A-Ar in air. Such a switching mechanism associated with the retention of crystallinity is unique in the chemistry of dysprosium. The structure of the molecule is formed from two symmetry related pentamers joined by an oxalate. A related compound containing two isolated neutral pentamers {Dy5(EDDC)2(μ3-AcO)2(μ5-C15H11PO3)2(μ2-AcO)3(AcO)2(H2O)2}{Dy5(EDDC)2(μ3-AcO)2(μ5-C15H11PO3)(μ4-C15H11PO3)(μ2-AcO)3(AcO)2(CH3OH)2}·2CHCl3 (II) has also been isolated with closely related Dy coordination and it exhibits similar SMM behaviour in zero field.

Abstract:Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) exhibit unique magnetic properties related to the molecular nature of these “isolated” coordination complexes. In this study, we investigate the influence of counterions on two macrocyclic dysprosium-based SMMs, namely, [DyLN6(OAc)2][OAc] (1) and [DyLN6(OAc)2][B(C6H5)4] (2) (LN6 = 2,7,13,18-tetramethyl-3,6,14,17,23,24-hexaazatricyclo[17.3.1.18,12]tetracosa 1(23),2,6,8,10,12(24),13,17,19,21-decaene, OAc = acetate), differing by the nature of the counterion. We demonstrate that the nature of the counterion indirectly modulates the degree of coordination geometry distortion, particularly in macrocycle folding, through subtle intermolecular interactions. This subsequently affects the slow relaxation dynamics, as supported by both magnetic and theoretical calculations. A noticeable decrease in the transverse magnetic anisotropy is observed for 2, attributed to a reduced degree of macrocycle distortion in the equatorial plane. Theoretical calculations further suggest a greater crystal-field splitting in 2 with the first excited state estimated to be twice as large in energy compared to 1. Both complexes exhibit magnetization relaxation dynamics primarily driven by a Raman process.

Abstract:Diarylethene (DAE), the ubiquitous photochromic unit, is one of the most promising candidates for well-recognized optoelectronic applications. In this paper, the relationship between reversible photoisomerization/metallochromic properties and second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) responses for a new photochromism based on DAE with a benzyl-linked 8-aminoquinoline-2-aminomethylpyridine unit (1O) has been systematically investigated by using density functional theory. Our results show that closed-ring (1C) comprising DAE unit was shown to be capable of exhibiting both large static first hyperpolarizabilities βtot (1.075 × 10−28 esu) and large switch ratio βratio ~ 31 with corresponding open-ring because of the better delocalization of the π-electron system, the more obvious degree of charge transfer and the smaller transition energy in the closed-ring. When the metal ions have been injected in open-ring (1O*M), we observed a larger NLO response compared with the corresponding open-ring 1O. However, it can slightly decrease the βtot values in 1C*M. Natural bonding orbital and atom in molecules analysis provide a better understanding for the property differences in metallochromic process. We hope this research would be beneficial for further theoretical and experimental studies on large second-order NLO switches applications.

Abstract:Metal-containing dithienylethenes offer new opportunities for variations in photochromic behavior. This work reports a series of copper(I) complexes containing dithienylethene-based bidentate phosphine ligands displaying varying photochromic properties. A copper dimer is used as a common precursor, allowing diverse photochromic functionality to be achieved. Calculations show that ring closing of the peripheral dithienyl moiety leads to a slight expansion of the five-membered metallacycle. The photochromic properties and photoreaction quantum yields of these complexes are tunable by variation of the ancillary ligands. Photoswitchable catalysis of a hydroboration reaction with one of the copper complexes is demonstrated.
