Abstract:Averaging reflected solar radiation (RSR) over the whole year/hemisphere may mask the inter-month-/region-specific signals, limiting the investigation of spatiotemporal mechanisms and hemispheric symmetry projections. This drives us to explain RSR characteristics from latitude- and month-based perspectives. The study also explores whether longer-record radiation datasets can exhibit hemispheric symmetry of RSR to understand its temporal changes. Statistics indicate that the largest trends in decreasing RSR in the Northern and Southern hemispheres (NH and SH) occur in mid-spring and are dominated by clear-sky atmospheric and cloud components and cloud components only, respectively. The interannual negative trend in the NH RSR mainly derives from 30–50° N latitude zones, attributed to the decrease in the clear-sky atmospheric component caused by reduced anthropogenic sulfate emissions and spring/summer dust frequencies and reduced cloud fraction caused by increased sea surface temperature and an unstable marine boundary layer, thus leading to a reduced cloud component. In the SH, the significant RSR decreasing trend is widespread in 0–50° S latitude zones, which is closely related to the decrease in the cloud component caused by the decrease in cloud cover over the tropical western Pacific and Southern Ocean, partially compensated by the increase in the clear-sky atmospheric component. A new data evaluation system and an uncertainty analysis reveal that only the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) outperforms in exhibiting the Cloud and Earth Radiant Energy System (CERES) hemispheric RSR differences due to offsetting biases among different components and achieves hemispheric RSR symmetry criteria within its uncertainty, making it suitable for studying long-term RSR hemispheric symmetry changes. Furthermore, the International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project (ISCCP) agrees well with CERES regarding hemispheric cloud component asymmetry and can help in the study of the corresponding long-term changes and mechanisms.

Abstract:The composition of the solar corona differs from that of the photosphere, with the plasma thought to fractionate in the solar chromosphere according to the First Ionisation Potential (FIP) of the different elements. This produces a FIP bias, wherein elements with a low FIP are preferentially enhanced in the corona compared to their photospheric abundance, but direct observations of this process remain elusive. Here we use a series of spectroscopic observations of Active Region AR 12759 as it transited the solar disc over a period of 6 days from 2-7 April 2020 taken using the Hinode Extreme ultraviolet Imaging Spectrometer (EIS) and Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) instruments to look for signatures of plasma fractionation in the solar chromosphere. Using the Si X/S X and Ca XIV/Ar XIV diagnostics, we find distinct differences between the FIP bias of the leading and following polarities of the active region. The widths of the IRIS Si IV lines exhibited clear differences between the leading and following polarity regions, indicating increased unresolved wave activity in the following polarity region compared to the leading polarity region, with the chromospheric velocities derived using the Mg II lines exhibiting comparable, albeit much weaker, behaviour. These results are consistent with plasma fractionation via resonant/non-resonant waves at different locations in the solar chromosphere following the ponderomotive force model, and indicate that IRIS could be used to further study this fundamental physical process.

Longitudinal features of day- and night-time ionospheric annual variations during the solar cycles 23 and 24

Abstract:We present a study concerning the ionospheric annual variations (IAV) using the global ionospheric maps (GIMs). In this regard, the corresponding regional electron content (REC) is computed in four longitudinal sectors, namely Asia, Africa, America and Pacific. The features of day- and night-time IAV are investigated using (i) band-pass filters and (ii) summer to winter (SW) ratio of REC. The results indicate that IAV are stronger in the southern hemisphere as compared to its northern counterpart. The asymmetry in the amplitude of IAV is maximum for the Pacific region, followed by America, Africa and Asia. The IAV in southern hemisphere are regular ionospheric variations (RIAV) with positive and negative peaks occurring in the months of December and June, respectively. The northern hemisphere and latitudinal regions exhibit a day-time anomalous ionospheric annual variations (AIAV), during the peak years of the considered solar cycles, in which maxima (minima) occurs in local winter (summer). In this regard, the phase of AIAV is found to vary with solar activity. The night-time IAV show anomalous behavior in the northern hemisphere during the solar minimum. The SW ratio of day-time REC is less than unity at northern hemisphere during the peak of a solar cycle. However, the said ratio is always greater than one in southern counterpart. The fitting curve for day-time SW ratio has a strong negative slope in the northern hemisphere. The threshold of SSN (sunspot number) indicating the presence of the daytime winter anomaly at low- latitudes is found to be 25, 80, and 115 in the Africa, Asia-Pacific, and American regions, respectively. Additionally, this anomaly becomes observable in the mid-latitudes region of America and the Pacific region for SSN values exceeding 100 and 150, respectively. On the other hand, the correlation and fitting analysis demonstrate that night-time SW ratio enhances with increase in the solar activity. This result predicts that night- time winter anomaly can only be present during the periods of minimum and low solar activity. However, our analysis revealed that the night-time winter anomaly is observable only in the African low-latitude region for SSN < 85.

Using sunRunner3D to interpret the global structure of the heliosphere from in situ measurements

Abstract:Understanding the large-scale three-dimensional structure of the inner heliosphere, while important in its own right, is crucial for space weather applications, such as forecasting the time of arrival and propagation of coronal mass ejections (CMEs). This study uses sunRunner3D (3D), a 3-D magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model, to simulate solar wind (SW) streams and generate background states. SR3D employs the boundary conditions generated by CORona-HELiosphere (CORHEL) and the PLUTO code to compute the plasma properties of the SW with the MHD approximation up to 1.1 AU in the inner heliosphere. We demonstrate that SR3D reproduces global features of Corotating Interaction Regions (CIRs) observed by Earth-based spacecraft (OMNI) and the Solar TErrestial RElations Observatory (STEREO)-A for a set of Carrington rotations (CRs) that cover a period that lays in the late declining phase of solar cycle 24. Additionally, we demonstrate that the model solutions are valid in the corotating and inertial frames of references. Moreover, a comparison between SR3D simulations and in-situ measurements shows reasonable agreement with the observations, and our results are comparable to those achieved by Predictive Science Inc.'s Magnetohydrodynamic Algorithm outside a Sphere (MAS) code. We have also undertaken a comparative analysis with the Space Weather Adaptive Simulation Framework for Solar Wind (SWASTi-SW), a PLUTO physics-based model, to evaluate the precision of various initial boundary conditions. Finally, we discuss the disparities in the solutions derived from inertial and rotating frames.

Abstract:The topside ionosphere extends from the F2-layer peak, where the electron density reaches its absolute maximum in the ionosphere, to the overlying plasmasphere and magnetosphere. In the topside ionosphere, the electron density decreases with height with a vertical variation rate strongly dependent on height itself. The last version of the International Reference Ionosphere (IRI) model, i.e., IRI-2020, describes this complex behavior through four topside options based on different sub-models (i.e., options) developed from the 1970s to the present. All these options have in common the F2-layer peak as an anchor point, while they differ in their topside electron density profile and/or plasma effective scale height formulations. In this work, we perform a validation of the accuracy of the four IRI-2020 topside options based on the comparison against in-situ electron density observations by Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE), Ionospheric Connection Explorer (ICON), and Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) F15 low-Earth-orbit satellites. Datasets used in this study encompass observations recorded from 1999 to 2022, covering different diurnal, seasonal, and solar activity conditions, on a global basis and for the height range 400−850 km above the ground. The nearly two solar cycles dataset facilitated the evaluation of IRI-2020 topside options ability to reproduce the spatial and time variations of the topside ionosphere for different solar activity conditions. The weaknesses and strengths of each IRI-2020 topside option are highlighted and discussed, and suggestions on how to improve the modeling of the challenging topside ionosphere region within the IRI model are provided for future reference.

Distinct Scaling Regimes of Energy Release Dynamics in the Nighttime Magnetosphere

Abstract:Based on a spatiotemporal analysis of POLAR UVI images, we show that the auroral emission events that initiate equatorward of the isotropic boundary (IB) obtained from a time-dependent empirical model, have systematically steeper power-law slopes of energy, power, area and lifetime probability distributions compared to the events that initiate poleward of the IB. The low-latitude group of events contains a distinct subpopulation of substorm-scale disturbances violating the power-law behavior, while the high latitude group is described by nearly perfect power-law statistics over the entire range of scales studied. The results obtained indicate that the inner and outer portions of the plasma sheet are characterized by substantially different scaling regimes of bursty energy dissipation suggestive of different physics in these regions.

Abstract:The International Reference Ionosphere is the international standard for Earth's ionosphere and recognized as such by the International Standardization Organization (ISO), the Committee on Space Research (COSPAR), the International Union of Radio Science (URSI) and many other organizations. This paper gives a brief introduction of the IRI model highlighting the many uses of the model in many different fields of theoretical and applied sciences and the ongoing efforts to upgrade the climatological IRI model to real-time conditions with updating indices or by assimilating data into the background IRI. The main part of the paper reviews the recent improvements and evaluations of the IRI topside electron density model and presents a new model option for extending IRI to plasmaspheric altitudes. At the heart of this new option is the use of existing empirical plasmasphere models and the Booker (1977) approach that has so successfully been applied in IRI for modelling the plasma temperatures and ion composition. Three empirical plasmasphere models are evaluated as candidates for this extension option: Carpenter and Anderson (1992), Gallagher et al. (2000), and Ozhogin et al. (2012).

Abstract:[1] We statistically analyze the ionospheric scale heights in the lower topside ionosphere based on the electron density (N-e) and temperature profiles observed from the incoherent scatter radar (ISR) at Arecibo (293.2 degrees E, 18.3 degrees N), Puerto Rico. In this study, a database containing the Arecibo ISR observations from 1966 to 2002 has been used in order to investigate the diurnal and seasonal variations and solar activity dependences of the vertical scale height (VSH), which is deduced from the electron concentration profiles defined as the value of -dh/d( ln(N-e)), and the effective scale height (H-m), which is defined as the scale height in the Chapman-alpha function to approximate the N-e profiles. As a measure of the slope of the height profiles of the topside electron density, the derived VSH and H-m show marked diurnal and seasonal variations and solar activity dependences. Their features are discussed in terms of thermal structures in the lower topside ionosphere. We also investigate the quantitative relationships between H-m, VSH, and plasma scale height (H-p) over Arecibo. The similarities and differences in these scale heights are discussed. Results suggest that both the contributions from topside temperature structure and diffusion processes can also greatly control VSH and Hm through changing the profile shape.
Modeling Equatorial to Mid‐Latitudinal Global Night Time Ionospheric Plasma Irregularities Using Machine Learning

Abstract:This study focuses on modeling the characteristics of nighttime topside Ionospheric Plasma Irregularities (PI) on a global scale. We utilize Random Forest (RF) and a one‐dimensional Convolutional Neural Network (1D‐CNN) model, incorporating data from the Swarm A, B, and C satellites, space weather data from the OMNIWeb data center, as well as zonal and meridional wind model data. Our objective is to simulate monthly global PI characteristics using a multilayer 1D‐CNN model trained on 12 space weather and ionospheric parameters. In addition, we investigate the most influential input parameters for predicting global nighttime PI characteristics. Our findings indicate that non‐equinox months exhibit the highest equatorial PI magnitude over the American‐African longitudinal sector, contrary to the expected higher Rayleigh‐Taylor instability growth rate during equinox months. Winter months display the most intense and widespread vertically and horizontally distributed equatorial PI patterns. We also observe double peaks across geomagnetic latitudes and longitudinally varying wavelike irregularity structures, particularly in May, August, and predominantly in September. Furthermore, north‐south hemispherical asymmetry in PI observed across different seasons. Through the RF parameter importance analysis method, we determine that temporal, geographical, and magnetic disturbance‐related factors play a crucial role in predicting global PI variabilities. These findings emphasize the significance of these variables in controlling the strongest PI characteristics observed in the Atlantic sector, which has garnered considerable attention in PI research. The employed 1D‐CNN model demonstrates exceptional predictive capabilities, exhibiting a strong correlation of 0.98 for global PI characteristics across all months and satellites.
