Abstract:Here we give a new proof of this result. Our proof depends on an estimate of a maximal operator on the Lorentz space which is of some independent interest. Finally, we use this inequality to get a generalisation of Bethuel’s inequality.

Abstract:We verify that if M is a compact minimal submanifold with boundary in a Cartan–Hadamard manifold N, then $$\sum \nolimits _{i=1}^{k}\lambda _i\ge \frac{2n\pi }{e}k^{\frac{n+2}{n}}{{\,\mathrm{vol}\,}}(M)^{-\frac{2}{n}}$$, where $$\lambda _i$$ is the ith Dirichlet eigenvalue of the Laplacian on M. This provides an evidence for that the generalized Pólya conjecture is true. We also prove that if M is a complete and non-compact minimal submanifold in a Cartan–Hadamard manifold N, then $$\gamma _n N_\alpha (V)\le \int _M(V-\alpha )_{-}^{n/2}(x)dx$$, where $$N_\alpha (V)$$ is the number of eigenvalues($$\le \alpha $$) of the Schrödinger operator $$-\Delta +V$$ on M and $$\gamma _n$$ is an explicit positive constant depending only on n.

Abstract:In 2005, B\"ottcher and Wenzel raised the conjecture that if $X,Y$ are real square matrices, then $||XY-YX||^2\leq 2||X||^2||Y||^2$, where $||\cdot||$ is the Frobenius norm. Various proofs of this conjecture were found in the last few years by several authors. We here give another proof. This proof is highly conceptual and requires minimal computation. We also briefly discuss related inequalities, in particular, the classical Chern-do Camo-Kobayashi inequality.

Abstract:A new $Z$-eigenvalue inclusion theorem for tensors is given and proved to be tighter than those in [G. Wang, G.L. Zhou, L. Caccetta, $Z$-eigenvalue inclusion theorems for tensors, Discrete and Continuous Dynamical Systems Series B,22(1) (2017) 187--198]. Based on this set, a sharper upper bound for the $Z$-spectral radius of weakly symmetric nonnegative tensors is obtained. Finally, numerical examples are given to show the effectiveness of the proposed bound.

Abstract:We investigate properties of measures in infinite dimensional spaces in terms of Poincaré inequalities. A Poincaré inequality states that the $L^2$ variance of an admissible function is controlled by the homogeneous $H^1$ norm. In the case of Loop spaces, it was observed by L. Gross that the homogeneous $H^1$ norm alone may not control the $L^2$ norm and a potential term involving the end value of the Brownian bridge is introduced. Aida, on the other hand, introduced a weight on the Dirichlet form. We show that Aida's modified Logarithmic Sobolev inequality implies weak Logarithmic Sobolev Inequalities and weak Poincaré inequalities with precise estimates on the order of convergence. The order of convergence in the weak Sobolev inequalities are related to weak $L^1$ estimates on the weight function. This and a relation between Logarithmic Sobolev inequalities and weak Poincaré inequalities lead to a Poincaré inequality on the loop space over certain manifolds.

Abstract:We prove the following sharp Sobolev inequality on the circle $$\int_{\mathbb{S}^1} [4(v')^2 - v^2] \mathrm{d} \theta \geq - \frac{4\pi^2}{\int_{\mathbb{S}^1} v^{-2} \mathrm{d} \theta},$$ with the equality being achieved when $v^{-2} (\theta) = \frac{k\sqrt{1-\alpha^2}}{1+ \alpha \cos(\theta - \theta_o)}$where$k>0$, $\alpha \in (-1,1)$, $\theta_0 \in \mathbb{R}$. If $v$ vanishes somewhere on the circle, then $$4 \int_{\mathbb{S}^1} (v')^2 \mathrm{d} \theta \geq\int_{\mathbb{S}^1} v^2 \mathrm{d} \theta.$$ The basic tools to prove the inequality are the rearrangement inequality on the circle and the variational method. We investigate the variational problem of the functional $\mathcal{F}[v] = \int_{\mathbb{S}^1} [4(v')^2 - v^2] \mathrm{d} \theta$ under the constraint $\int_{\mathbb{S}^1} v^{-2} \mathrm{d} \theta = 2\pi$. An important geometric insight of the functional $\mathcal{F}$ is that it is invariant under the Lorentz group, since $\mathcal{F}[v]$ is the integral of the product of two null expansions of a spacelike curve parameterised by the function $v^{-2}$ in a lightcone in $3$-dim Minkowski spacetime. The global minimiser of $\mathcal{F}$ under the constraint is simply given by the spacelike plane section of the lightcone. We introduce a method which combines the symmetric decreasing rearrangement and the Lorentz transformation. This method isnot confined to the scope of this paper, but is applicable to other Lorentz invariant variational problems on $\mathbb{S}^{n}, n \geq 1$. As an example, we sketch a proof of the sharp Sobolev inequality on $\mathbb{S}^n, n\geq 3$ by this method.

Abstract:In this short survey, we derive some weyl-type universal inequalities of eigenvalues of the Laplacian on a closed Riemannian manifold of nonnegative Ricci curvature. We also give upper bounds for the $L_{\infty}$ norm of eigenfunctions of the Laplacian in the same setting. A detailed proof of these results did not seem to appear in the literature but the results follow from a simple combination of Milman's work and Cheng-Li's work.

Abstract:The aim of the paper is to study the pinned Wiener measure on the loop space over a simply connected compact Riemannian manifold together with a Hilbert space structure and the Ornstein–Uhlenbeck operator d * d . Abstract:In this paper, by mainly using the rearrangement technique and suitably constructing trial functions, under the constraint of fixed weighted volume, we can successfully obtain several isoperimetric inequalities for the first and the second Dirichlet eigenvalues, the first nonzero Neumann eigenvalue of the Witten-Laplacian on bounded domains in space forms. These spectral isoperimetric inequalities extend those classical ones (i.e. the Faber-Krahn inequality, the Hong-Krahn-Szegő inequality and the Szegő-Weinberger inequality) of the Laplacian.

Abstract:We prove the Lorentz-Shimogaki and Boyd theorems for the spaces $\Lambda^p_u(w)$. As a consequence, we give the complete characterization of the strong boundedness of $H$ on these spaces in terms of some geometric conditions on the weights $u$ and $w$, whenever $p>1$. For these values of $p$, we also give the complete solution of the weak-type boundedness of the Hardy-Littlewood operator on $\Lambda^p_u(w)$.

Lorentz polarisation and isoperimetric inequality in Minkowski spacetime

Abstract:In this paper, we prove an isoperimetric inequality for the domain of dependence of a finite lightcone in the Minkowski spacetime of dimension greater than or equal to 3. The inequality involves two quantities: the volume of the domain of dependence, and the perimeter of the finite lightcone. It states that among all finite lightcones with the same perimeter, the maximal volume of the domain of dependence is achieved by the spacelike hyperplane truncated finite lightcone. A novelty of this isoperimetric inequality is the codimension 2 comparison feature. We introduce the Lorentz polarisation to prove the isoperimetric inequality by studying the corresponding variational problem. A key observation is the monotonicity of the domain of dependence of a finite lightcone under the Lorentz polarisation. We show that any finite lightcone can be transformed by Lorentz polarisations to approximate a spacelike hyperplane truncated finite lightcone with an equal or less perimeter. As further applications of the method of Lorentz polarisation, we prove the following isoperimetric type inequalities: a) For a set with the given perimeter in the hyperboloid in the Minkowski spacetime, the geodesic ball in the hyperboloid has the maximal volume of the domain of dependence of the set; b) For an achronal hypersurface with boundary in the lightcone (or the hyperboloid), given the perimeter of the boundary fixed, the spacelike hyperplane disk has the maximal area.

Böttcher-Wenzel inequality for weighted Frobenius norms and its application to quantum physics

Abstract:By employing a weighted Frobenius norm with a positive matrix $\omega$, we introduce natural generalizations of the famous Böttcher-Wenzel (BW) inequality. Based on the combination of the weighted Frobenius norm $\|A\|_\omega := \sqrt{{\rm tr}(A^\ast A \omega)}$ and the standard Frobenius norm $\|A\| := \sqrt{{\rm tr}(A^\ast A)}$, there are exactly five possible generalizations, labeled (i) through (v), for the bounds on the norms of the commutator $[A,B]:= AB - BA$. In this paper, we establish the tight bounds for cases (iii) and (v), and propose conjectures regarding the tight bounds for cases (i) and (ii). Additionally, the tight bound for case (iv) is derived as a corollary of case (i). All these bounds (i)-(v) serve as generalizations of the BW inequality. The conjectured bounds for cases (i) and (ii) (and thus also (iv)) are numerically supported for matrices up to size $n=15$. Proofs are provided for $n=2$ and certain special cases. Interestingly, we find applications of these bounds in quantum physics, particularly in the contexts of the uncertainty relation and open quantum dynamics.
