Abstract:Stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) is one of most efficient methods for generating new laser lines. In recent years, SRS in crystalline Raman media have attracted much attention for the advantages of high Raman scattering gain, favorable thermal conductivity and good mechanical and chemical stability [1-3]. So far most crystalline Raman lasers focus on Stokes generation. In contrast to Stokes generation, ant-Stokes generation is a four-wave mixing process, which involves two pumping photons, one Stokes photon, and one anti-Stokes photon. A few researches with regard to crystalline anti-Stokes lasers have been reported before [4, 5]. In 2009, Mildren et al. reported a parametric Raman anti-Stokes laser at 508 nm based on KGd(WO4)2 crystal [5]. 1st anti-Stokes output energies up 0.27 mJ were obtained with the conversion efficiency of 0.46%. In this letter, a BaWO4 anti-Stokes Raman laser pumped by an actively Q-switched Nd:YAG laser at 1064 nm is presented for the first time. The experimental setup is shown in Fig. 1. The pumping laser is an actively Q-switched Nd:YAG laser with the repetition rate of 1 Hz, pulse width of 7.5 ns and beam diameter of 2.4 mm. A half-wave plate is used to change the pumping polarization to fix the maximum Raman gain direction. A Raman resonator is placed on a precisely controlled rotating stage to generate a Stokes laser at the phase-matching angle 8-1 from the pumping axis. M1 is coated for high transmission (HT) at 1064 nm and high reflection (HR) at 1180 nm. M2 is coated for HT at 1064 nm and 986 nm and HR at 1180 nm. A 4×4×45.5 mm3 a-cut BaWO4 crystal is placed between the two mirrors. The whole length of the resonator is 58 mm. The maximum pumping energy of 80 mJ is used to investigate the anti-Stokes generation. There is no antiStokes generation till the external angle 8-1 lager than 19.1 mrad. And the highest first-order anti-Stokes is obtained when 8-1 equals 31.9- ;0.6 mrad, corresponding to the inernal angle of 17.6±0.3 mrad, which is agreed with the theoretical result caculated by the Sellmeier equation reported in [6]. At this situation, a weak secondorder anti-Stokes laser is also observed. The spectrum of all output lasers are measured, including 889 nm, 968 nm, 1064 nm, 1180 nm, 1324 nm, and 1509 nm. The anti-stokes pulse energies with respect to the pumping energy are shown in Fig. 2. When the pumping energy is 80 mJ, the maximum output energies of the first-order and second-order anti-Stokes laser are 0.76 mJ and 0.12 mJ, respectively. The corresponding conversion efficiency is 0.95% and 0.15%. The pulse widths of the output lasers are measured to be 6 ns and 5.5 ns for the Stokes and anti-Stokes laser, respectively.
