Effect of preparation condition on performance of Ag–MoO3/ZrO2 catalyst for direct epoxidation of propylene by molecular oxygen

Abstract:The Ag–MoO3/ZrO2 catalyst for an epoxidation of propylene by molecular oxygen was prepared by the precipitation/impregnation method, and characterized by N2 adsorption at low temperature, XRD, NH3-TPD and CO2-TPD. The effects of preparation condition of ZrO2 support on its physicochemical properties and catalytic performance were studied. The results show that suitably low surface area, big pore size, and modest and weak surface acidity–basicity for the Ag–MoO3/ZrO2 catalyst are in favor of the selective formation of propylene oxide. High surface area, abundant micro-pore structure and strong acidity–basicity or acidity-free are liable to the deep oxidation of propylene to CO2 and H2O. As the support of the Ag–MoO3 catalyst for an epoxidation of propylene, the monoclinic phase of ZrO2 is preferable to tetragonal one. Suitably larger particles of Ag and highly dispersed MoO3 on the Ag–MoO3/ZrO2 catalyst are beneficial to improve the selectivity to propylene oxide.
Modification of Ag-MoO3/ZrO2Catalyst with Metallic Chloride for Propylene Epoxidation by Molecular Oxygen

Abstract:The modification of the Ag-MoO3/ZrO2catalyst with metallic chloride was studied for a gas-phase epoxidation of propylene by molecular oxygen. As a modifier, the presence of NaCl, CsCl or CaCl2can effectively regulate an electronic property of the Ag-MoO3/ZrO2catalyst and improve obviously its catalytic epoxidation performance. When NaCl (1000 ppm), CsCl (1500 ppm) or CaCl2(1000 ppm) was used to modify the 20%Ag-4%MoO3/ZrO2catalyst, the selectivity to propylene oxide (PO) increased to 63. 5%, 66. 7% and 62. 9%, from 47. 9%, respectively, and the corresponding O2conversion was 7. 3%, 7. 7% and 8. 1%, respectively. The studies of XPS indicates that the electron-interaction between the active component of catalyst and metallic chloride has occurred obviously, and the presence of chloride can enhance the electron-deficient property of Ag to improve the electrophilic property of adsorbed oxygen and inhibit an isomerization and deep oxidation of PO to improve the selectivity to PO.

Abstract:Epoxidation of propylene to propylene oxide by molecular oxygen was studied over a modified Ag-MoO 3 catalyst. The results show that MoO 3 plays an important role in improving the efficiency of the catalyst, and a suitable content of MoO 3 is 40-50 wt%. XPS reveals that some of the silver and molybdenum in the catalyst exist as Ag + and Mo (6 - δ)+ , respectively. The promotion effect of NaCl, Ce(NO 3 ) 3 , BaCl 2 and CsNO 3 on the Ag-MoO 3 catalyst was studied. As a modifier of the Ag-MoO 3 catalyst, NaCl or Ce(NO 3 ) 3 are more suitable than BaCl 2 or CsNO 3 and the optimal loading of NaCl or Ce(NO 3 ) is about 2 wt%. Using a feedstock gas of 15.6% C 3 H 6 , 12.2% O 2 and balance N 2 without any addition of NO, EtCl or CO 2 at a space velocity of 4500 h -1 , 6.8% O 2 conversion and 53.1% selectivity to propylene oxide were achieved over the Ag-MoO 3 -2.0% NaCl catalyst at 400 °C. At 450 °C the O 2 conversion and selectivity to propylene oxide were 11.4 and 43.6%, respectively.

Abstract:Epoxidation of propylene to make propylene oxide catalyzed by μ-oxo-bismetalloporphyrins is investigated.The results indicate that the reaction temperature,reaction time,molar ratio of acraldehyde to propylene,and concentration and type of catalysts have significant effects on the reaction.The appropriate reaction conditions are as follows:100℃,1.5 h,500 rpm for stirring velocity,n (acraldehyde) ∶n (propylene)=0.625,catalyst concentration at 9.72×10-5mol％.The central metal and substituent group ofμ-oxo-bismetalloporphyrins also have influence on catalytic activity.The catalytic activity order of different substituent group of μ-oxo-bismetalloporphyrins are —OCH3 ＞—H＞—F.With different central metal,the catalytic activity order are Fe＞Cu.Of which the best catalytic result is given by [T(p-OCH3) PPFe] 2 O,with the yield,selectivity and conversion rate being 27.31％,93.95％ and 29.06％ respectively.

Abstract:Direct gas-phase epoxidation of propylene to propylene oxide (PO) by molecular oxygen was studied over the MoO3-modified supported-silver catalyst. The effect of promoter and support on the performance of the Ag–MoO3 catalyst and their role were investigated by XPS, XRD, SEM, BET surface area, NH3-TPD, CO2-TPD techniques and so on. As the promoter, MoO3 plays a great role of electron- and structure-type bi-functional promoter. Of all the supports studied, ZrO2 is the most suitable one for the Ag–MoO3 catalyst. The presence of support can regulate the size of the Ag–MoO3 particles and the pore radii of catalyst, and decrease the loading of MoO3 from ∼50wt.% in the unsupported Ag–MoO3 catalyst to ∼4wt.% in the Ag–MoO3/ZrO2 catalyst. The properly weak Lewis acidic sites, the larger size of the Ag–MoO3 particles and pore channel on the Ag–MoO3/ZrO2 catalyst are beneficial to improve epoxidation performance of the catalyst. The effect of the reaction temperature and space velocity on the catalytic epoxidation of propylene was also investigated. The low temperature or high space velocity can decrease the deep oxidation of propylene oxide to improve the selectivity to PO. Over the 20%Ag–4%MoO3/ZrO2 catalyst at 400°C, 0.1MPa and space velocity of 7500h−1, the selectivity to PO of 60.3% was achieved with the O2 conversion of 4.8%; under the space velocity of 12000h−1, the selectivity to PO was 71.5% with 2.5% O2 conversion.

Abstract:The unsupported Cu and Ag catalysts with different oxidation states were prepared, and their catalytic performances for propylene epoxidation were investigated.The metallic Cu catalyst exhibits much higher catalytic activity and propylene oxide（PO） selectivity than Cu2 O and Cu O catalysts.The Cu0 species are the main active sites for propylene epoxidation, but Cu2 O and Cu O species are in favor of CO2 and acrolein production.The PO selectivity of 54.2 % and propylene conversion of 2.6 % can be achieved over the metallic Cu catalyst at 160 °C in initial stage, but metallic Cu catalyst would be oxidized to Cu2 O during propylene epoxidation, resulting in a sharp decrease in the PO selectivity and propylene conversion.Nanosize Ag Cuxbimetallic catalysts were prepared.It is found that adding Ag to the metallic Cu catalysts can prevent the oxidation of Cu and make Ag Cuxbimetallic catalysts more stable under the condition of propylene epoxidation.The Ag/Cu molar ratio can remarkably affect the catalytic performance of Ag Cuxcatalyst and the selectivity to PO and acrolein.After Ag Cuxwas supported on MOx-modified a-Al2O3, its catalytic performance can be improved and has a close relationship with the acid–base property of support.

Abstract:The effect of preparation method. Mo content, pretreatment conditions, space velocity, reaction temperature on the preformance of methane aromatization under oxygen-free conditions over HZSM-5 supported Mo catalyst has been studied, the effect of carbon deposition on catalyst after reaction and regeneration by carbon burning with O2 was investigated. It was found that the initial activity of catalysts prepared by grinding technique was higher than that of catalysts prepared by impregnating technique, but the activity of the former decreased quickly with reaction time increased, and decreased obviously after regeneration, while the activity of the latter was similar to that of fresh catalysts. The catalyst with Mo content of 3. 5%��4. 0% showed the best aromatization activity. Decreasing space velocity and increasing reaction temperature improved the aromatization activity. With reaction time increased, the selectivity for ethylene enhanced while selectivity for benzene decreased. Furthermore, XPS results suggested that the most of Mo6+ in the catalysts prepared by impregnating method dispersed in the framework of HZSM-5 zeolite and those of grinding method dispersed on the surface of HZSM-5 zeolite, the carbon content on the catalyst surface increased rapidly, and Mo6+ in the ground catalysts was reduced to Mo0 after reaction for 4 h. On the basis of these results, it is proposed that molybdena carbene with configuration of MoO3 = CH2 is an initial product of methane aromatization reaction.
Olefin Metathesis over Heterogeneous Catalysts: Interfacial Interaction Between Mo Species and a Hβ−Al2O3 Composite Support

Abstract:The effect of molybdenum content on the structure and performance of Mo/H beta-Al2O3 catalysts in olefin metathesis was examined. The optimal performance was obtained with a catalyst of 4-6 wt % Mo on a composite support of 70% H beta zeolite and 30% Al2O3. The interfacial interaction between the Mo species and the H beta-Al2O3 composite support was carefully studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N-2 adsorption, and multinuclear magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR) spectroscopy. XRD and N-2 adsorption results indicate that some interactions may occur between the Mo species and the composite support during the sample preparation. Al-27 and Si-29 MAS NMR spectra show that this kind of interaction becomes more severe and leads to the dealumination of the framework and subsequent appearance of aluminum molybdate with increasing Mo loadings. Two-dimensional Al-27 MQ MAS NMR spectra further demonstrate that the framework Al on H beta zeolite at the specific T sites could be preferentially extracted upon Mo loading, which may result in the appropriate Bronsted acidity on the support as evidenced by the quantitative H-1 MAS NMR measurements. A moderate interaction of Mo species with the support and the proper acidity may be advantageous for the cross-metathesis of ethene and 2-butene to propene over heterogeneous catalysts.
PROPYLENE AMMOXIDATION UNDER FORCED PERIODIC OSCILLATIONS OF OXYGEN CONCENTRATION

Abstract:The effects of forced periodic oscillation of oxygen concentration on the propylene ammoxidation reaction over a Mo-Bi catalyst were investigated in a continuous flow micro-fixed bed reactor at 440℃. The propylene conversion, acrylonitrile selectivity and periodic average yield were studied with various forced oscillation patterns and compared with the results of steady-state operation ,which is the condition of industrial operation. The results show that the periodic average yield of acrylonitrile under any forced periodic oscillation of oxygen concentration among this experimental conditions,thus obtained could higher than that under the steady-state condition.A better forced periodic oscillation condition was that the low ratio of oxygen with propylene 9.0,operation time 210 min, and the high ratio 10.5, operation time 60 min. Operating under this condition, the periodic average yield of acrylonitrile reached 80.70%,increased about 2.3% compared with the acrylonitrile yield of steady-state operation.
The Molybdenum Species of MoO3/SiO2 and Their Catalytic Activities for the Epoxidation of Propylene with Cumene Hydroperoxide

Abstract:The MoO3/SiO2 catalysts containing different surface molybdenum species were prepared by a sol-gel method, and the effects of the preparation condition and MoO3 loading on the surface molybdenum species and property of MoO3/SiO2 were studied. The XRD, FT-IR, UV-vis and Raman spectroscopies were used to characterize the surface molybdenum species, and temperature-programmed desorption of NH3 adsorbed on a catalyst was used to detect the surface acidic properties. The results show that, there were the dispersed polymolybdate, alpha-MoO3, beta-MoO3, monomeric molybdenum species and silicomolybdic acid on the MoO3/SiO2 catalyst, and their distributions and subsistence states were affected by the preparation condition and MoO3 loading. Different molybdenum species exhibit different catalytic activities for the epoxidation of propylene with cumene hydroperoxide. In the 15 wt% MoO3/SiO2 catalyst synthesized at pH 9.1 and dried appropriately, there are the small size beta-MoO3 and monomeric molybdenum species that they are mainly effective catalyst components for the epoxidation of propylene. Using this catalyst, the similar to 100% conversion of cumene hydroperoxide and similar to 100% selectivity to propylene oxide can be obtained in the tert-butyl alcohol solvent at 2.6 MPa and 80 degrees C for 4 h. Abstract:NaCl-modified VCexCu1-x mixed oxide catalysts were found to be effective for propylene epoxidation using molecular oxygen as the oxidant. Hydrogen addition in the feedstock can significantly enhance the PO selectivity and the stability of the catalyst. XPS results also show that Cu0 may be the active phase for epoxidation.

Abstract:The synthesis of 1-methoxy-2-propanol from propylene oxide and methanol was investigated with a series of ZnMgAl catalysts derived from hydrotalcite-like compounds. The mixed oxides were characterized using XRD, TG-DTG, N-2 adsorption analysis. NH3-TPD and CO2-TPD methods were used to measure the acid-base properties of the catalysts. Under the optimal reaction condition (the amount of the catalysts, 1.8%; methanol/propylene oxide molar ratio, 5: 1; temperature, 393 K; and time, 3 h), ZnMgAl-2 led to the highest propylene oxide conversion of 95.9% and 1-methoxy-2-propanol selectivity of 90.9%. The high catalytic activity and selectivity of ZnMgAl-2 were attributed to the presence of a high density of acidic sites and a medium basic sites. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Propylene and oxygen molecules react via direct epoxidation over mixed metal oxides to form propylene oxide, which is an important intermediate compound for petrochemical products such as propylene glycol, propylene carbonate, polyurethanes, etc. The mixed metal oxide of silver and zinc (Ag2ZnO2) is the optimum catalyst for direct propylene epoxidation. Direct propylene epoxidation (DPE) with molecular oxygen is an effective process of conversion of propylene into propylene oxide (PO), which is an essential intermediate compound for many petrochemical products such as propylene glycol, propylene carbonate, polyurethane foams, etc. The modification of Ag‐based catalysts which prevents overoxidation and improves catalytic activity for PO production is studied by simulating Ag2O and mixed metal oxides of Ag2O‐CuO (Ag2CuO2), Ag2O‐ZnO (Ag2ZnO2) and Ag2O‐Fe2O3 (Ag2Fe2O4) catalysts using density functional theory (DFT). Instantaneous adsorption of propylene was observed over Ag2ZnO2 and Ag2CuO2. DPE with oxygen via the Mars‐Van Krevelen mechanism (MVKM) was investigated considering propylene and oxygen as alternatively adsorbed species and molecular species. DPE with molecular oxygen and adsorbed propylene required 1.7 times more activation energy than DPE with molecular propylene and adsorbed oxygen. DPE with oxygen via the Lagmuir‐Hinshelwood mechanism (LHM) required 3–4 times more activation energy than MVKM for Ag2O and Ag2CuO2, whereas it is comparable for Ag2ZnO2. This showed that both mechanisms are followed for DPE over Ag2ZnO2. Ag2ZnO2 was found to be the optimum catalyst for DPE with instantaneous adsorption of propylene and instantaneous desorption of PO.

Abstract:Direct epoxidation of propylene (DEP) into propylene oxide using molecular oxygen is a promising approach due to high atom utilization and environmental sustainability. However, the absence of highly selective catalysts has been a challenge in this field. Herein, the ligand protected AgCuCl nanocluster was synthesized via a one-pot method and loaded onto BaCO3 to prepare a small size bimetal catalyst (AgCuCl/BaCO3-N2) via calcination under N2 atmosphere. A PO selectivity of 85.29% at a relatively mild temperature of 275 °C can be obtained. Characterizations revealed that AgCuCl/BaCO3-N2 with low-valence Cu+ species facilitated the formation of electrophilic oxygen species that preferentially attacked the CC bond of propylene, resulting in the production of PO instead of attacking the C–H bond for the formation of byproduct. This study provides a clear example of using supported bimetal catalysts to achieve propylene epoxidation and offers guidance for selecting supports for supported nanoclusters as an efficient catalyst.

Abstract:Abstract Catalytic olefin metathesis represents a vital reaction in the chemical industry, as it provides a feasible route for the interconversion of olefins. However, traditional supported catalysts usually suffer from low activity due to sluggish kinetics for the formation of catalytically active metal‐carbene species. This work tackles this issue by taking phosphoric acid as a promoter and constructing a Brønsted acidic site to cooperate with the MoO x sites, thus facilitating the formation of Mo‐carbene. It turns out that the turnover frequency of propene metathesis over the Mo−P/Al 2 O 3 catalyst is 7.1 times higher than that over the unmodified Mo/Al 2 O 3 catalyst. The combined characterization reveals the promotion of phosphorus results from the alignment of olefin toward adjacent MoO x and thus facilitates formation of active Mo‐carbene species.

Abstract:The production of propylene from readily available propane sources is of great importance as it serves as a crucial building block for producing numerous value-added chemicals. Oxidative dehydrogenation of propane with carbon dioxide (ODPC) has been proposed as a viable and eco-friendly approach for simultaneous propylene production and carbon dioxide reduction. In this study, ZnOx catalysts were prepared by supporting them on a range of molybdenum–zirconium (Mo–Zr) mixed–oxides with varying Mo contents, aiming to utilize them for ODPC applications. The incorporation of suitable quantities of Mo in zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) supports increases the surface concentration and enhances the dispersion of ZnOx, thereby demonstrating promotional effects on the surface properties of the supported ZnOx catalysts. Notably, the ZnOx catalyst supported on a Mo–Zr mixed–oxide, with an optimized Mo content, exhibits a propane conversion rate more than two-fold higher than that of the catalyst without Mo in ODPC. Furthermore, the introduction of Mo into the ZrO2 supports effectively inhibits the formation of coke by suppressing the cleavage of C–C bonds in propane. In comparison, the supported ZnOx catalysts with higher Zn loadings, show that a Mo–Zr mixed–oxide support effectively suppresses the formation of bulk ZnOx more than an unmodified ZrO2 support, leading to improved ODPC performance. The promoting effects of Mo emphasize the potential of utilizing mixed–oxide supports for ZnOx catalysts in ODPC, demonstrating a promising opportunity for enhancing catalytic performance.

Abstract:The 15% MoO3/SiO2 catalysts were synthesized by a modified base-catalyzed sot-gel method and characterized by Raman, XRD, FT-IR, UV-vis, NH3-TPD and ICP. The catalytic performance of MoO3/SiO2 for the liquid phase epoxidation of propylene with cumene hydroperoxide (CHP) and the effects of preparation procedure on its physicochemical and catalytic properties were studied. The results show that, in the processes of preparing catalyst, the solvent of ammonium heptamolybdate and the sequence of feeding would affect the existing states of molybdenum species on silica support significantly. When 1,2-propanediol was used as the solvent and an appropriate sequence of feeding was adopted, the beta-MoO3 species and monomeric molybdenum species can form on silica to make for the promotion of MoO3/SiO2. catalyst. Without any depressor in the reaction system, at 80 degrees C and 2.2 MPa for 4 h, the conversion of CHP is above 99% and the selectivity to PO reaches 85.3%. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. A DFT study of epoxidation of propylene on dimer MoO(x)

Abstract:Propylene oxide is an important chemical raw material. In this paper, Density Functional Theory (DFT) was used to calculate the epoxidation of propylene on the dimer MoOx by Gaussian 09 software. Firstly, we established the structure of the dimer MoOx/SiO2 and analyzed it, and then calculated the dehydrogenation process of propylene and the formation process of PO. It was found that the activity of O in Mo-O-Si was higher, which was beneficial to the AHS process of C3H6, but the reaction activity of different O substances to the formation of PO was very low. In order to solve this problem, we established a dimer MoOx model with defect sites, and found that the defect sites in the dimer could effectively activate O2 (O2- 2), and the activated material O had high PO selectivity. Compared with process of AHS and the process of PO formation, the energy barrier of PO formation path was very low, which was the main product. At the same time, we also established the MoOx model of Fe doped dimer and the MoOx model of Fe doped defect dimer. It was found that the MoOx clusters were more active due to Fe doping, and the energy barriers of both AHS process and PO formation path were greatly reduced compared with those before doping. The presence of Fe made it easier for the dimer MoOx to form defect sites, which made it easier to activate O2 (O- 2) and reduced the energy barriers of both AHS and PO formation processes.

Abstract:<h3 class="a-plus-plus">Abstract</h3> <p class="a-plus-plus">The rearrangement of propylene oxide is greatly affected by the acidity of the catalyst. ZSM-5 zeolite with easily regulated surface acidity was used to catalyze the reaction with propionaldehyde as main product. The difference in the ratio of silica to alumina resulted in significant changes in the acidity. The results show that the ratio of the amount of Lewis acid sites (LAS) to the amount of Brønsted acid sites (BAS) has a great positive influence on the catalytic performance. When the ratio of silica to alumina reaches 50, the ratio of the LAS to BAS reaches the maximum value of 18.6, the catalytic performance is excellent. The in-situ diffuse reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (DRIFTS) was employed to study the adsorption and reaction behavior of propylene oxide on the ZSM-5 catalyst. Results showed that the epoxy ring of propylene oxide first adsorbs on the Lewis acid site (Al atom with empty electron orbital) of ZSM-5 catalyst to form an intermediate with the bond between C=O and C–O which then converts to the propionaldehyde.
