Abstract:A stretchable and conformable alternating current electroluminescent device having a recordmaximumluminance of 450 cd m(-2) is fabricated. When stretched, the luminance of the device monotonously reduces but still retains as high as 100 cd m(-2) luminance at 500% strain. The device performance is stable in terms of mechanical robustness, cycling stretching stability, and long term stability. The high performance is achieved by using a new dielectric matrix (poly(styrene(144)-b-butyl acrylate(938)-b-styrene(144))) for ZnS: Cu particles and a new solvent-free ionic conductor of the diblock copolymer of (ethylene glycol)(9) methyl ether acrylate and n-butyl acrylate as transparent electrodes.

Abstract:The development of colored electrodes has significant implications for various applications, offering an enhanced blend of aesthetics and functionality across multiple fields. Traditional approaches to achieving this, such as altering material composition, modifying carrier density, and applying surface treatments or micro-nano structures, face challenges in terms of complexity and manufacturing costs. This study introduces an innovative, high-conductivity electrode design capable of flexibly controlling the reflective spectra. We have successfully fabricated various flexible colored devices characterized by high brightness and saturation through a room-temperature preparation process, exhibiting remarkably low electrical resistance of approximately 300 m Omega/sq. The construction of the asymmetrical Fabry-Perot resonance cavity, composed of a four-layer compact film stack, enables the enhancement or suppression of specific light wavelengths, facilitating efficient spectral filtering with conductive dielectric and metals. Moreover, the electrode exhibits remarkable bending properties, maintaining conductivity and color integrity even after 5000 bending cycles and at high curvatures (up to 90 m(-1)), a feature attributed to its ultrathin structure (<600 nm). Our findings showcase the electrode's potential in a wide range of electronic and optical applications, including electromagnetic shielding/camouflage and photovoltaic devices, as demonstrated in our research.

Abstract:The preparation of high-performance stretchable electrodes is the main challenge in achieving stretchable lithium-ion batteries. The ideal solution is to use an extensible current collector with high conductivity; however, no related work has been reported yet. Commercial binders have difficulty withstanding tensile deformation and guaranteeing sufficient contact between active materials and current collectors. Here, stretchable electrodes are developed based on a poly(styrene)-b-poly(n-butyl acrylate)-poly(styrene)/single-walled carbon nanotube composite as an elastic current collector and poly(styrene)-bpoly( methyl acrylate)-poly(styrene) as an elastomeric binder. The relationship between the conductivity of the current collector and the electrode performance is revealed. It is found that when the conductivity of the stretchable current collector is higher than 10(-2) S cm(-1), the stretchable electrodes exhibit equivalent electrochemical performance to those prepared from rigid metal current collectors. 50% deformation can be reached which is enough for most wearable devices. With the decrease of carbon nanotube content, 80% deformation can be reached without badly sacrificing the performance. Stretchable electrodes that have been subjected to 100 stretching cycles display similar performance to the initial pre-stretched state, indicating that the electrode is stable and deforms reversibly. Based on their performance, stretchable current collectors may soon replace rigid metal ones in batteries used in stretchable electronics.

Abstract:Flexible transparent electrode is attracting a lot of attention for various applications due to their versatile ability. However, it is still challenging to apply transparent electrode in stretchable application, because the conductivity will be degraded even lost when the electrode is stretched. Here, a high-performance transparent electrode with stretching-insensitivity is reported. The electrode is obtained by embedding copper nanowires into wrinkled polydimethylsiloxane elastomers via using simple sol-gel transition. The resulting electrode exhibits low sheet resistance of 16 Ω/sq. at an acceptable transmittance of ∼74% at visible region, and tensile stability under below 210% strain. In particular, the resistance is almost unchanged after 2500 stretching cycles with a strain of 70%, indicating excellent stretching-insensitively.

Abstract:Stretchable transparent electrodes are crucial components for deformable electronics. While solid-state electrodes struggle to achieve significant stretchability, liquid metal electrodes have emerged as a potential alternative. However, their widespread application has been limited by their complex fabrication and reduced performance when stretched. This study introduces stretchable transparent electrodes composed of liquid metal in serpentine micromesh patterns. These electrodes are constructed cost-effectively to show high optical transmittance and low sheet resistance. They can endure 800% strain with limited variations in resistance due to the serpentine design. A transparent proximity and touch sensor is combined with soft pneumatic actuators to enable a deformable haptic interface. Additionally, transparent heaters are prepared to conform to the curvilinear body surface, allowing for thermotherapy on subcutaneous tumors while concurrently monitoring the skin's responses. Liquid metal serpentine micromeshes represent promising transparent electrodes for stretchable devices and systems.

Abstract:A stretchable transparent electrode composed of silver nanowires, PEDOT:PSS, and polyvinyl alcohol composites is successfully fabricated, exhibiting 100% stretchability and remarkable thermal stability. Stretchable transparent electrodes (STEs) have garnered considerable attention as a fundamental architectural component in the realm of conformable and wearable electronics. This study presents a novel approach utilizing composite inks based on silver nanowires to fabricate STEs, with the incorporation of a conductive polymer as the leveling agent and polyvinyl alcohol as the bonding agent. The resulting STE demonstrates several desirable properties, including low sheet resistance (15.6 Ω sq−1) and surface roughness facilitated by poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate. Moreover, the STE demonstrates strong adhesive strength to various plastic substrates, high transparency (>80%), and remarkable stretchability of up to 100%. Notably, the STE exhibits exceptional thermal stability under thermal stress at 200 °C for extended durations of up to 300 min. As a result, flexible organic solar cells employing this composite STE achieve outstanding performance in terms of high efficiency, robust mechanical durability, and remarkable thermal stability.

Abstract:Intrinsically stretchable conductors play key roles in the dynamic interfacing of electronic devices with soft human tissues. However, it is difficult to simultaneously achieve high electrical conductivity and mechanical stretchability. Here, we prepared highly stretchable and conductive thin film electrodes by combining PEDOT:PSS and a mutually plasticized polymer dopant. Notably, harsh acid treatment for conductivity enhancement was avoided, and good solvent tolerance and high optical transparency were realized, all of which are essential to device fabrication. We further developed a transparent electrochromic display that can bear stretching up to 80% strain, demonstrating its promising application in next‐generation optoelectronics. Abstract:A platinum network-based transparent electrode has been fabricated by electrospinning. The unique nanobelt structured electrode demonstrates low sheet resistance (about 16 Omega sq(-1)) and high transparency of 80% and excellent flexibility. One of the most interesting demonstrations of this Pt nanobelt electrode is its excellent reversibly resilient characteristic. The electric conductivity of the flexible Pt electrode can recover to its initial value after 160% extending and this performance is repeatable and stable. The good linear relationship between the resistance and strain of the unique structured Pt electrode makes it possible to assemble a wearable high sensitive strain sensor. Present reported Pt nanobelt electrode also reveals potential applications in electrode for flexible fuel cells and highly transparent ultraviolet (UV) sensors.

Abstract:A facile method is used to construct robust and stretchable electrodes by direct‐written liquid metal onto electrospun graphene oxide/thermoplastic polyurethane composite nanofiber membrane contributing from the improved interfacial force between the liquid metal oxide layer and predeposited interface bonding layer possessing rich –OH. Highly stretchable electrodes with electrically robust behavior are critical for wide applications of soft robots, electronic skins, and flexible sensors. However, it remains challenging to fabricate such electrodes with traditional fabrication methods, such as lithography, conductive composite material synthetization, stencil printing, and microchannel injection. Here, a facile method is proposed to construct robust and stretchable electrodes by direct‐written liquid metal (LM) onto a predeposited interface bonding layer, which greatly improves the interfacial force between the LM and substrate. An electrospun graphene oxide/thermoplastic polyurethane composite nanofiber membrane is used as the bonding layer, which provides rich –OH on the interface and in situ forming of hydrogen bond (H‐bond) with the LM oxide layer. A prototype electrode shows stretchability of 580%. The resistance remains stable that varies from 2.8 to 19.3 Ω at 500% elongation, and varies slightly after 7500 stretching cycles under 50% elongation, from 2.6–4.0 to 4.4–6.4 Ω. The fabrication technique is demonstrated with applications in stretchable circuit board assemblies and stretchable electronic cables, indicating a potential effective method for fabricating high‐performance stretchable electrodes.

An elastomeric transparent composite electrode based on copper nanowires and polyurethane

Abstract:An elastomeric transparent composite electrode has been fabricated comprising a percolation network of copper nanowires (CuNWs) embedded in the surface layer of an elastomeric polyurethane (PU) matrix. The composite electrode was fabricated by first forming a highly conductive CuNW network on glass, then overcoating with a layer of a liquid polyurethane precursor which was subsequently polymerized, and finally peeling off the resulting PU sheet. The composite retained the elastomeric stretchability of the polymer matrix. Pre-treatment of the CuNW network with 6-aminohexanoic acid enhanced the bonding between nanowires and PU matrix, and significantly improved the reversibility of the surface conductance of the composite electrode during repeated stretching at room temperature. The composite electrodes exhibited a low sheet resistance of <102 Ω sq−1 at tensile strains up to 60%. High stretchability was obtained in a wide range of strain rates over 200 cycles of stretching. Morphological development during the stretching–releasing processes was consistent with the important role of the bonding between the nanowires and the PU matrix in the stretchability of the composite electrode.
A Stretchable, Transparent, and Mechanically Robust Silver Nanowire–Polydimethylsiloxane Electrode for Electrochromic Devices

Abstract:The application of flexible indium tin oxide (ITO-free) electrochromic devices has steadily attracted widespread attention in wearable devices. Recently, silver nanowire/poly(dimethylsiloxane) (AgNW/PDMS)-based stretchable conductive films have raised great interest as ITO-free substrate for flexible electrochromic devices. However, it is still difficult to achieve high transparency with low resistance due to the weak binding force between AgNW and PDMS with low surface energy because of the possibility of detaching and sliding occurring at the interface. Herein, we propose a method to pattern the pre-cured PDMS (PT-PDMS) by stainless steel film as a template through constructed micron grooves and embedded structure, to prepare a stretchable AgNW/PT-PDMS electrode with high transparency and high conductivity. The stretchable AgNW/PT-PDMS electrode can be stretched (5000 cycles), twisted, and surface friction (3M tape for 500 cycles) without significant loss of conductivity (ΔR/R ≈ 16% and 27%). In addition, with the increase of stretch (stretching to 10–80%), the AgNW/PT-PDMS electrode transmittance increased, and the conductivity increased at first and then decreased. It is possible that the AgNWs in the micron grooves are spread during PDMS stretching, resulting in a larger spreading area and higher transmittance of the AgNWs film; at the same time, the nanowires between the grooves come into contact, thus increasing conductivity. An electrochromic electrode constructed with the stretchable AgNW/PT-PDMS exhibited excellent electrochromic behavior (transmittance contrast from ~61% to ~57%) even after 10,000 bending cycles or 500 stretching cycles, indicating high stability and mechanical robustness. Notably, this method of preparing transparent stretch electrodes based on patterned PDMS provides a promising solution for developing electronic devices with unique structures and high performance.

Abstract:Polymer electrolytes are being considered as an effective solution for electrochemical devices to replace currently organic liquid electrolyte due to their excellent mechanical property and security. Herein, we prepared stretchable polymer electrolytes (SPEs) that doped by poly(2‐acrylamido‐2‐methylpropanesulfonic acid ‐co‐poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate) (P(AMPS‐co‐PEGMA)) and enhanced by poly(vinylidene fluoride‐co‐hexaflouropropylene) (PVDF‐HFP), through UV in‐situ polymerization. The SPEs showed good mechanical performance with the elongation of more than 40 % and the ionic conductivity reach the order of 10‐3 S cm‐1. In terms of application,flexible electrochromic devices based on the UV in‐situ preparing SPEs were assembled and its color switching performance could still be well even after 400 switching cycles and 1000 bending cycles, which indicated that the SPEs could have excellent prospects in the application for flexible devices. Abstract:Stretchable electrochromic devices (ECDs) were fabricated from electrospun PEDOT:PSS (poly(3, 4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonate) fibers. Stretchable and transparent electrodes with a sheet resistance of 1200 Ω sq-1were prepared by depositing the conductive fibers on elastomeric substrates that were prepared from polydimethylsiloxane. The conductive substrates replaced the ITO coated glass electrodes that are typically used in ECDs. The functioning device was prepared from a flexible chitosan electrolytic gel and a 4, 7-bis(4-diphenylaminophenyl)-2, 1, 3-benzothiaziazole (TPA-BZT-TPA) electrochrome that were deposited on the streatchable transparent electrodes. The assembled device could be stretched to 150% its original length and bent to a curvature of 0.1. The device could be operated and switched between its yellow (off) and blue (on) states while being stretched and bent with a maximum contrast ΔT ≈ 30% at 805 nm and a coloration efficiency of 168 cm2C-1. The stretchable device had an electrochromic contrast that was 30% greater than its counterpart that was prepared from conventional ITO-glass electrodes. The critical composition required for making devices truly stretchable was possible by evaluating the performance of five types of devices consisting of different layers.

Abstract:In order to simultaneously achieve this combination of mechanical robustness, optical transparency, and high conductivity, the Korean scientists found that a double network (DN) ionic hydrogel worked well as transparent and stretchable electrodes. The first and second networks were composed of chitosan crosslinked through the poly(ethylene glycol) crosslinker and poly( N -hydroxyethyl acrylamide- co -acrylamide), respectively. Then, the prepared DN hydrogel was soaked in a 1 M lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide aqueous solution for 1 day to impart conductivity to the hydrogel network.

Abstract:Omnidirectionally stretchable 2D transparent electrode with Rs of 0.12 Ω sq−1 at 80% can endure stretching up to 130% with no fractures and no resistivity change by optimizing the key geometrical parameters of mesh structure. As the application demonstration, the stretchable electroluminescent device based on Cu mesh STE maintains uniform lighting up to 120% stretching, showing its potential in stretchable and wearable optoelectronic applications. 2D stretchable transparent electrodes (STE) are required to conform to non‐flat complex 3D surfaces for next‐generation stretchable optoelectronic devices. However, it is a great challenge to simultaneously maintain omnidirectional stretchability, high transmittance, and the least change in conductivity at large strain. In this work, omnidirectionally stretchable 2D transparent electrode is achieved by hybrid printed copper mesh embedded in an elastic material. The electrode displays exceedingly low sheet resistance down to 0.12 Ω sq−1 while still maintaining 80% of optical transparency. Two types of mesh geometries, the horseshoe‐like and sinusoid‐like shapes, are thoroughly investigated by simulations and experiments. By optimizing the key geometrical parameters of mesh structure, the copper mesh can endure stretching up to 130% with no fractures and no resistivity change. After 1000 stretch‐and‐release cycles at 10% strain, the copper mesh remains intact with negligible resistance variation. For 2D stretchability, the copper mesh is stretched in eight directions simultaneously and can maintain its initial conductivity up to 50% tensile deformation. As a demonstration of application, the copper mesh STE is employed in a stretchable electroluminescent device that maintained uniform lighting up to 120% stretching and 100 stretch‐release cycles at 30% strain, showing its potential in stretchable and wearable optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:Highly stretchable alternating current electroluminescent devices are developed based on soft electrodes comprising ionic hydrogels with a double‐network structure. Their high optical transparency and mechanical robustness allow extreme deformability and high stretchability over 1400% as well as a multi‐stacked structure, meeting the requirements of a soft electrode for future wearable devices. To realize wearable displays and interactive soft robots, significant research efforts are focused on developing highly deformable alternating‐current electroluminescent (ACEL) devices. Although soft emission layers are well developed, designing stretchable, conductive, and transparent soft electrodes remains challenging. In this study, ionic hydrogels are prepared comprising a double network (DN) of poly(N‐hydroxyethylacrylamide‐co‐acrylamide)/crosslinked chitosan swollen in aqueous lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide. Owing to the finely tuned DN structure of the polymeric crosslinker and transparent electrolyte, the developed ionic hydrogels exhibit remarkable stretchability (1400%), excellent optical transmittance (>99%), and high conductivity (1.95 × 10−2 Sm−1). Based on the high performance of the ionic hydrogels, ACEL devices are fabricated with an emission layer containing phosphor microparticles and demonstrate stable, high luminance under extreme deformation, and ultra‐high elongation. The excellent transparency of the ionic hydrogel further enables the fabrication of novel soft ACEL devices with tandem structures by stacking several emission and electrode layers, in which each emission layer is independently controlled with a switch circuit.

Abstract:A new structure of flexible transparent electrodes is reported, featuring a metal mesh fully embedded and mechanically anchored in a flexible substrate, and a cost-effective solution-based fabrication strategy for this new transparent electrode. The embedded nature of the metal-mesh electrodes provides a series of advantages, including surface smoothness that is crucial for device fabrication, mechanical stability under high bending stress, strong adhesion to the substrate with excellent flexibility, and favorable resistance against moisture, oxygen, and chemicals. The novel fabrication process replaces vacuum-based metal deposition with an electrodeposition process and is potentially suitable for high-throughput, large-volume, and low-cost production. In particular, this strategy enables fabrication of a high-aspect-ratio (thickness to linewidth) metal mesh, substantially improving conductivity without considerably sacrificing transparency. Various prototype flexible transparent electrodes are demonstrated with transmittance higher than 90% and sheet resistance below 1 ohm sq(-1) , as well as extremely high figures of merit up to 1.5 × 10(4) , which are among the highest reported values in recent studies. Finally using our embedded metal-mesh electrode, a flexible transparent thin-film heater is demonstrated with a low power density requirement, rapid response time, and a low operating voltage.

Abstract:Free‐standing stretchable electrodes with high stretchability and resistance stability are desired for future wearable electronic applications. However, it is very difficult to achieve high stretchability (typically restricted by the substrate) and meanwhile maintain low resistance change upon stretching. Innovative designs and fabrication strategies need to be developed to meet the required characteristics. We report the successful fabrication of free‐standing wavy elastic electrodes achieving very high stretchability (>300% for PDMS) and outstanding resistance stability (only 5% relative resistance change at 100% strain), simultaneously. We systematically studied designs with different joining angles and shapes to optimize the electrode performances. The 3D free‐standing electrodes with outstanding stretchability and electrical stability has great potential for further optimizations and applications in future stretchable and wearable electronic devices.
