Abstract:Co-firing biomass and coal blends were conducted in a thermogravimetric analyzer (ZRT-1 model TGA). The effect of blending ratio and the heating rates on the combustion characteristics of coal and cola/biomass blends were investigated. Furthermore, kinetic of combustion at various stages were evaluated using Coats-Redfern formula. TG-DTG curves were analyzed for ignition, peak and burnout temperatures. The results show that the co-combustion characteristics such as ignition, burnout and peak temperatures decreased with increasing proportion of biomass in the mixture. Beyond 30% biomass ratio, the ignition temperature remained constant. This suggests that co-firing up to 30% can be performed without much effect on combustion characteristics. The co-combustion parameters of blends are slightly higher with increase in heating rates, but show similar trend with increase in biomass ratios. Mixing biomass and coal resulted in higher volatile content, which is the pre-requisite for easy and better combustion. The activation energy decreases with increase in biomass percentage in the mixture and at higher heating rates. The lowest activation energy was 23.905 KJ/Kg at 10 degrees C/min and 20.67 KJ/Kg at 20 degrees C/min at 60PW40LG sample ratio. The combustion of other samples shows similar trends. The dominant reaction mechanisms associated with blends volatile matters and char combustion of most blends are dominated by reaction order models, while the char combustion mechanism was domination by 3-dimensional diffusion. A biomass blend ratio of 30% was suggested to be an optimum ratio for biomass and coal co-combustion.
