Abstract:Biosensing, a promising branch of exploiting nanophotonic devices, enables meticulous detection of subwavelength light, which helps to analyze and manipulate light-matter interaction. The improved sensitivity of recent high-quality nanophotonic biosensors has enabled enhanced bioanalytical precision in detection. Considering the potential of nanophotonics in biosensing, this article summarizes recent advances in fabricating nanophotonic and optical biosensors, focusing on their sensing function and capacity. We typically classify these types of biosensors into five categories: phase-driven, resonant dielectric nanostructures, plasmonic nanostructures, surface-enhanced spectroscopies, and evanescent-field, and review the importance of enhancing sensor performance and efficacy by addressing some major concerns in nanophotonic biosensing, such as overcoming the difficulties in controlling biological specimens and lowering their costs for ease of access. We also address the possibility of updating these technologies for immediate implementation and their impact on enhancing safety and health.

Abstract:As emerging platforms, nanoporous-based biosensors have potentially useful applications for sensitive and selective detection of various analytes. The integration of nanoporous materials ( e.g. , nanocarbons, mesoporous, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), and MOF-based nanocomposites, etc. ) with various transduction techniques, such as electrochemical, optical, and mass-sensitized, has led to the development of biosensors for a wide spectrum of applications in healthcare, environmental monitoring, and food safety. These biosensors take advantage of the unique properties of nanoporous materials, such as tunable pore size and selective surface chemistry with high surface area, and enhance the interaction between the analyte and the recognition element. Overall, biosensors based on nanoporous material have very low limits of detection and appropriate linear range. This review focuses on recent developments in the design of biosensors based on nanoporous materials, including sensing mechanisms and applications.

Abstract:The development of micro- and nanotechnology for biomedical applications has defined the cutting edge of medical technology for over three decades, as advancements in fabrication technology developed originally in the semiconductor industry have been applied to solving ever-more complex problems in medicine and biology. These technologies are ideally suited to interfacing with life sciences, since they are on the scale lengths as cells (microns) and biomacromolecules (nanometers). In this paper, we review the state of the art in bionanotechnology and bioMEMS (collectively BNM), including developments and challenges in the areas of BNM, such as microfluidic organ-on-chip devices, oral drug delivery, emerging technologies for managing infectious diseases, 3D printed microfluidic devices, AC electrokinetics, flexible MEMS devices, implantable microdevices, paper-based microfluidic platforms for cellular analysis, and wearable sensors for point-of-care testing.

Abstract:Micro- and nano-sensors lie at the heart of critical innovation in fields ranging from medical to environmental sciences. In recent years, there has been a significant improvement in sensor design along with the advances in micro- and nano-fabrication technology and the use of newly designed materials, leading to the development of high-performance gas sensors. Advanced micro- and nano-fabrication technology enables miniaturization of these sensors into micro-sized gas sensor arrays while maintaining the sensing performance. These capabilities facilitate the development of miniaturized integrated gas sensor arrays that enhance both sensor sensitivity and selectivity towards various analytes. In the past, several micro- and nano-gas sensors have been proposed and investigated where each type of sensor exhibits various advantages and limitations in sensing resolution, operating power, response, and recovery time. This paper presents an overview of the recent progress made in a wide range of gas-sensing technology. The sensing functionalizing materials, the advanced micro-machining fabrication methods, as well as their constraints on the sensor design, are discussed. The sensors’ working mechanisms and their structures and configurations are reviewed. Finally, the future development outlook and the potential applications made feasible by each category of the sensors are discussed.

Abstract:Modern life quality is strongly supported by the advances made in biosensors, which has been attributed to their crucial and viable contribution in point-of-care (POC) technology developments. POC devices are exploited for the fast tracing of disease progression, rapid analysis of water, and food quality assessment. Blood glucose meters, home pregnancy strips, and COVID-19 rapid tests all represent common examples of successful biosensors. Biosensors can provide great specificity due to the incorporation of selective bio-recognition elements and portability at significantly reduced costs. Electrochemical biosensor platforms are one of the most advantageous of these platforms because they offer many merits, such as being cheap, selective, specific, rapid, and portable. Furthermore, they can be incorporated into smartphones and various analytical approaches in order to increase their sensitivity and many other properties. As a very broad and interdisciplinary area of research and development, biosensors include all disciplines and backgrounds from materials science, chemistry, physics, medicine, microbiology/biology, and engineering. Accordingly, in this state-of-the-art article, historical background alongside the long journey of biosensing construction and development, starting from the Clark oxygen electrode until reaching highly advanced wearable stretchable biosensing devices, are discussed. Consequently, selected examples among the miscellaneous applications of nanobiosensors (such as microbial detection, cancer diagnosis, toxicity analysis, food quality-control assurance, point of care, and health prognosis) are described. Eventually, future perspectives for intelligent biosensor commercialization and exploitation in real-life that is going to be supported by machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) are stated.

Abstract:<p>Recent trends in biosensing research have motivated scientists and research professionals to investigate the development of miniaturized bioanalytical devices to make them portable, label-free and smaller in size. The performance of the cantilever-based devices which is one of the very important domains of sensitive field level detection has improved significantly with the development of new micro/nanofabrication technologies and surface functionalization techniques. The cantilevers have scaled down to Nano from micro-level and have become exceptionally sensitive and also have some anomalous associated properties due to the scale. In this review we have discussed about fundamental principles of cantilever operation, detection methods, and previous, present and future approaches of study through cantilever-based sensing platform. Other than that, we have also discussed the past major bio-sensing efforts through micro/nano cantilevers and about recent progress in the field.</p>

Abstract:Low-dimensional materials can be used to create highly sensitive, targeted, label-free, FET biosensors that can identify a variety of analytes. However, reliable biological FET is not yet available in the real world because it is hard to meet the strict requirements for highly sensitive and selective bio-FET fabrication. Two-dimensional materials, like graphene or transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), are used in devices called 2D FET-based biosensors as the active channel in a field-effect transistor (FET) configuration. 2D materials, are better candidates for high-performance biosensing due to their dramatic change in resistivity upon analyte adsorption or biomarkers detection, tunable electronic properties, high surface activities, sufficient stability, and layer-dependent semiconducting properties. We provide a brief overview of fascinating biosensing applications with a variety of architectural designs in this review article. This group of devices includes 2D TMDs-based FETs that incorporate graphene, reduced graphene oxide, quantum dots, nanoparticles, nanocomposites, nanorods, nanospheres, nanoflowers, and TMD/MXene heterostructures. These achievements show the exceptional capability of ultrahigh performance in biomarker detection in point-of-care diagnostics. The conclusion includes a of current opportunities and challenges.

Abstract:In recent years, there has been immense advancement in the development of nanobiosensors as these are a fundamental need of the hour that act as a potential candidate integrated with point-of-care-testing for several applications, such as healthcare, the environment, energy harvesting, electronics, and the food industry. Nanomaterials have an important part in efficiently sensing bioreceptors such as cells, enzymes, and antibodies to develop biosensors with high selectivity, peculiarity, and sensibility. It is virtually impossible in science and technology to perform any application without nanomaterials. Nanomaterials are distinguished from fine particles used for numerous applications as a result of being unique in properties such as electrical, thermal, chemical, optical, mechanical, and physical. The combination of nanostructured materials and biosensors is generally known as nanobiosensor technology. These miniaturized nanobiosensors are revolutionizing the healthcare domain for sensing, monitoring, and diagnosing pathogens, viruses, and bacteria. However, the conventional approach is time-consuming, expensive, laborious, and requires sophisticated instruments with skilled operators. Further, automating and integrating is quite a challenging process. Thus, there is a considerable demand for the development of nanobiosensors that can be used along with the POCT module for testing real samples. Additionally, with the advent of nano/biotechnology and the impact on designing portable ultrasensitive devices, it can be stated that it is probably one of the most capable ways of overcoming the aforementioned problems concerning the cumulative requirement for the development of a rapid, economical, and highly sensible device for analyzing applications within biomedical diagnostics, energy harvesting, the environment, food and water, agriculture, and the pharmaceutical industry.

Abstract:Biosensors are analytical devices that play a significant role in medicine as diagnostics, agricultural, food, and environment sectors for detecting and monitoring various analytes. According to their uniqueness in the effective and rapid target recognition, a wide range of biosensors have been utilized in different applications for the detection of diverse targets. In this regard, various principles and configurations were employed to develop these sensors. Incorporating nanotechnology and green chemistry principles in the fabrication of biosensors brings novel and effective sensors termed as nanobiosensors. Due to the nanoscale range and distinct physical, chemical, electrical, thermal, optical, and magnetic properties, the nano-dimensional sensors act better than conventional biosensors. This review focuses on the applications of nanotechnology principles in biosensor development. The utilization of nanomaterials in sensor development and significance of these sensors in various fields have been discussed. Abstract:The latest advances and current challenges of enzyme‐mimicking nanoparticles and their use in biosensing are highlighted, with a special focus on point‐of‐care (PoC) devices and their translational path for use in biomedical devices. These materials exhibit innate advantages compared to biological enzymes and nanoparticle probes currently utilized and hold great promise for implementation in biotechnology and clinical diagnosis. Nanozymes represent a class of nanosized materials that exhibit innate catalytic properties similar to biological enzymes. The unique features of these materials have positioned them as promising candidates for applications in clinical sensing devices, specifically those employed at the point‐of‐care. They notably have found use as a means to amplify signals in nanosensor‐based platforms and thereby improve sensor detection limits. Recent developments in the understanding of the fundamental chemistries underpinning these materials have enabled the development of highly effective nanozymes capable of sensing clinically relevant biomarkers at detection limits that compete with "gold‐standard" techniques. However, there remain considerable hurdles that need to be overcome before these nanozyme‐based sensors can be utilized in a platform ready for clinical use. An overview of the current understandings of nanozymes for disease diagnostics and biosensing applications and the unmet challenges that must be considered prior to their translation in clinical diagnostic tests is provided.

Abstract:Biosensors have been found with numerous applications in many areas including genetic analysis, detection of infectious diseases, environmental monitoring and forensic analysis. We have witnessed rapid advances in this field, especially with the emergence of nanotechnology in the past decade. This special issue of Biotechnology Journal focuses on biosensors. By definition, biosensors are a type of devices that transduce biological recognition reactions to various physical signals including optical, electrochemical, acoustic and mechanical. Biosensors have been found with numerous applications in many areas including genetic analysis, detection of infectious diseases, environmental monitoring and forensic analysis. We have witnessed rapid advances in this field, especially with the emergence of nanotechnology in the past decade. As examples, nanomaterials and nanostructured surfaces have been proven of high utility in recognition-based capturing and signal amplification, which have remarkably increased the sensitivity for detecting a wide range of biomarkers for cancers, as well as targets other applications. To reflect important progress and provide a broader perspective in this exciting field, we organized this Special Issue by inviting active biosensor researchers to contribute a collection of research articles and reviews. Biosensors have been found with numerous applications in many areas including genetic analysis, detection of infectious diseases, environmental monitoring and forensic analysis. We have witnessed rapid advances in this field, especially with the emergence of nanotechnology in the past decade. This issue contains three invited reviews. Tan et al. summarize recent advances in phage display technology for bioanalysis 1. Lee et al. review microtechnology-based organ systems and whole-body models for drug screening 2. Kuroda et al. describe the use of material-binding proteins and peptides for biosensing and summarized rapid and sensitive detection of airborne asbestos fibers 3. In ten research articles, two papers focus on the optimization of biosensors for better sensitivity, one explores the graphene interface for DNA analysis 4 and the other studies the electrode interface for electrochemical detection 5. Endo et al. developed printable photonics-based photonic crystal films for label-free optical detection of C-reactive protein using antigen-antibody reaction 6. An electrochemical sensing system employing fructosamine 6-kinase was developed for glycated albumin measurement without relying on proteolytic digestion 7. In an interesting study, Iijima et al. demonstrate that bio-nanocapsule-based scaffold improves the sensitivity and ligand-binding capacity of mammalian receptors on the sensor chip 8. Hokuto et al. employed bio-LSI systems for simultaneous immunosensing of different analytes in multiple specimens based on an imaging of enzyme activity 9. Two studies explored the use of aptamers for developing biosensors 10, 11. Xiao and Xiang proposed a simple fluorescence method for quantification of total phosphorothioate content in bacterial DNA 12. Abstract:The interface between nanosystems and biosystems is emerging as one of the broadest and most dynamic areas of science and technology, bringing together biology, chemistry, physics and many areas of engineering, biotechnology and medicine. The combination of these diverse areas of research promises to yield revolutionary advances in healthcare, medicine and the life sciences through, for example, the creation of new and powerful tools that enable direct, sensitive and rapid analysis of biological and chemical species, of and ranging from the diagnosis and treatment of disease to the discovery and screening of new drug molecules. Devices based on nanowires are emerging as a powerful and general platform for ultrasensitive, direct electrical detection of biological and chemical species. Here, representative examples where these new sensors have been used for detection of a wide-range of biological and chemical species, from proteins and DNA to drug molecules and viruses, down to the ultimate level of a single molecule, are discussed. Moreover, how advances in the integration of nanoelectronic devices enable multiplexed detection and thereby provide a clear pathway for nanotechnology, enabling diverse and exciting applications in medicine and life sciences, are highlighted.

Abstract:Over the last few decades, field-effect transistor (FET)-based biosensors have demonstrated great potential across various industries, including medical, food, agriculture, environmental, and military sectors. These biosensors leverage the electrical properties of transistors to detect a wide range of biomolecules, such as proteins, DNA, and antibodies. This article presents a comprehensive review of advancements in the architectures of FET-based biosensors aiming to enhance device performance in terms of sensitivity, detection time, and selectivity. The review encompasses an overview of emerging FET-based biosensors and useful guidelines to reach the best device dimensions, favorable design, and realization of FET-based biosensors. Consequently, it furnishes researchers with a detailed perspective on design considerations and applications for future generations of FET-based biosensors. Finally, this article proposes intriguing avenues for further research on the topology of FET-based biosensors.

Abstract:With recent advances in nanotechnology, great progress has been made in biosensors based on nanomaterials, but there are still numerous challenges to overcome. We describe nanomaterial-based biosensors for researchers new to the field, paying particular attention to metal nanoparticles and carbon nanotube (CNT)-based label-free approaches. Label-free monitoring of biorecognition events provides a promising platform, which is simple, cost-effective, and requires no external modification to biomolecules. Using examples from recent reports, we illustrate the diversity of biological recognition events and the range of experimental techniques employed for metal-nanoparticle-based and label-free characterization.

Abstract:Micro/nanomotors (MNMs) emerge as a vital candidate for biosensing due to its nano-size structure, high surface-to-area ratio, directional mobility, biocompatibility, and ease of functionalization, therefore being able to detect objects with high efficiency, precision, and selectivity. The driving mode, nanostructure, materials property, preparation technique, and biosensing applications have been thoroughly discussed in publications. To promote the MNMs-based biosensors from in vitro to in vivo, it is necessary to give a comprehensive discussion from the perspective of sensing performances enhancement. However, until now, there is few reviews dedicated to the systematic discussion on the multiple performance enhancement schemes and the current challenges of MNMs-based biosensors. Bearing it in mind and based on our research experience in this field, we summarized the enhancement methods for biosensing properties such as sensitivity, selectivity, detection time, biocompatibility, simplify system operation, and environmental availability. We hope that this review provides the readers with fundamental understanding on performance enhancement schemes for MNMs-based biosensors.

Abstract:When chemical, physical, or biological factors were being measured in the early years, large sensing types of equipment were used. They were also inaccurate and the end user had to manually interpret and even decode the sensor output, in addition to limited stability. Nanoparticles, nanowires, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), nanorods, and quantum dots (QDs) are some of the nanomaterials that are frequently employed in the production of nanobiosensors. The ability to change color, great detection sensitivity, a huge surface area, high carrier capacity, high stability, and high thermal and electrical conductivity are just a few characteristics that nanomaterials have. These sensing systems can identify a wide range of clinically important molecules, including nucleic acids, viruses, bacteria, cancer antigens, pharmaceuticals, narcotic drugs, toxins, contaminants, and even whole cells in a variety of sensing media, from buffers to more complex environments like urine, blood, or sputum. The most recent developments examined in this research have enormous potential for using nanomaterials in point-of-care diagnostics and early illness screening. The current review focuses on the principles of nanotechnology-enabled biosensors and their architectural design. The classification of nanobiosensors, various attributes, and various fabrication methods are covered in this article. Abstract:The aim of this review is to gather current researches into sensors based on noble metal and semiconductor nanomaterials in biomedical detection and elucidate the basic principle and applications of different sorts of semiconductor nanomaterials, i.e., metal oxide NPs, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and magnetic metal oxide (MMO) NPs. Based on the classifications of nano-biosensors, they can be summarized as electrochemical nano-biosensors, optical nano-biosensors, calorimetric nano-biosensors, and piezoelectric nano-biosensors, wherein, electrochemical and optical nano-biosensors acting as most popular study objects are focused on to excavate the great improvements in excellent sensitivity, selectivity and stability based on fabrication techniques.
