Abstract:The good quality bis(tetra-ethylammonium) bis(hydrogen l -tartarate) l -tartaric acid monohydrate (TELT) single crystal with the dimension of 11 × 2 × 2 mm 3 was synthesized by reflux method and grown-up by slow solvent evaporation method. The properties of this material were described first time in the literature. The structure was already solved and the work was issued in Acta crystallographic section E. The structure of grown crystal was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and it was confirmed that the structure related to the Monoclinic system, space group of P 2 1 . The cell parameters were found to be equal to a = 7.5725 (4) Å, b = 27.7907 (13) Å, c = 8.7620 (6) Å, α = γ = 90° β = 99.884 (5) °, V = 1816.55 (18) Å 3 . The FTIR spectrum showed the various functional groups presented in the TELT. The UV–Visible–NIR spectral analysis brings into being that the grown crystal has wide transmission window over the complete visible and near IR regions. The cut-off wavelength was found to be 252 nm. The Tauc plotting was used to determine the optical bandgap, and it was found to be 4.9 eV, which is close relation to the theoretically obtained bandgap. The thermal gravimetric (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) analyses revealed that TELT is thermally stable up to 192 °C. At room temperature, the dielectric characteristics of the present crystal were investigated in the frequency range 50 Hz–5 MHz. The mechanical properties are studied using the Vickers microhardness test. The elastic stiffness constant ( C 11 ), work hardening coefficient ( n ), fracture toughness ( K c ), Brittleness index ( B i ), Yield strength ( y ), and work hardening coefficient ( n ) were all calculated. Using etching studies, well defined parallel etch pits were observed with few dislocations. The presence of the second harmonic generation effect was confirmed by the Kurtz–Perry method.
