Abstract:A complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) image sensor can be used for communication, in addition to imaging. This paper investigates noise characteristics and system performance for CMOS image sensor communication. Different signal-dependent and independent noise sources are categorized and comprehensively analyzed in conjunction with sensor measurements. Accordingly, a unified channel model in the pixel-matched case is proposed, and the communication signal-to-noise ratio is defined and demonstrated in different parameter settings. Moreover, the channel capacity with mixed noise and bounded input is derived and is proven to be achievable by a discrete input distribution of finite number of probability mass points. Simulation shows that capacity of more than 7 b/s/Hz per pixel or 8-10 b/s/Hz per block of multiple pixels is achievable.

Abstract:In this paper, the noises of images taken by Cannon40D and CMOS industrial camera are analyzed both in time and space domain without outside illumination. The dark random noise associated with time is very low, which means the system noise is almost uncorrelated with time. However, system noise in the center of the CMOS image sensor is lower than those in the marginal area, which suggests the noise presents a certain spatial distribution. Finally, taking the temperature effect into consideration, we find the relationship between the maximum noise and temperature.

Abstract:A detailed SNR (signal-to- noise ratio) analysis is given based on a proposed RF-interconnect model. The noise characteristics included ports reflecting noise, interlayer switching coupling noise and receiver thermal noise. To realize a good trade-off between bandwidth and BER (bit error ratio), a type of subsection modulation mode that synthesizes CDMA (code division multiple access) and MPSK (M-ary phase shift keying) was proposed in case of different SNR versus frequency. Consequently, the performance of RF-interconnect is improved greatly.
Channel Capacity and Bounds In Mixed Gaussian-Impulsive Noise

Abstract:Communication systems suffer from the mixed noise consisting of both non-Gaussian impulsive noise (IN) and white Gaussian noise (WGN) in many practical applications. However, there is little literature about the channel capacity under mixed noise. In this paper, we prove the existence of the capacity under p-th moment constraint and show that there are only finite mass points in the capacity-achieving distribution. Moreover, we provide lower and upper capacity bounds with closed forms. It is shown that the lower bounds can degenerate to the well-known Shannon formula under special scenarios. In addition, the capacity for specific modulations and the corresponding lower bounds are discussed. Numerical results reveal that the capacity decreases when the impulsiveness of the mixed noise becomes dominant and the obtained capacity bounds are shown to be very tight.

Abstract:This letter focuses on a spatial modulation (SM)-based multiple input single output optical wireless communication system. In the system, both input-dependent noise and finite alphabet are employed. Based on information theory, the theoretical expressions of the mutual information and its lower bound are derived. By maximizing the minimum distance, an optimization problem for precoding design is formulated. Then, an interior point method-based iteration algorithm is proposed to solve the problem. Numerical results show that the performance of the proposed SM scheme outperforms that of the conventional, choosing the best-gain channel scheme. Moreover, the proposed precoding scheme can provide better system performance than the scheme without precoding.
Predicted and Experimental Performance of a Long Distance Non-Line of Sight Image Sensor Communication System.

Abstract:We use a white LED and a commercial camera to construct an image sensor communication (ISC) system in the visible light spectrum for outdoor applications. In the absence of line of sight, atmospheric scattering enables non-line of sight (NLOS) communication. The LED spectrum, link path loss predicted by Mie and Rayleigh scattering and absorption theory, spectral response of camera pixels, as well as background noise are all integrated into system performance evaluation up to 2000m. Results show that the performance varies with transceiver elevation angles, and is more sensitive to the transmitter elevation. We also conduct experiments to measure the camera noise characteristics and long distance system performance. It is found that camera noise follows closely a signal-dependent Gaussian model, and the system achieves data rate of 100bps over distance of 300m with no error and no pointing requirement.
Communications under Bursty Mixed Gaussian-impulsive Noise: Demodulation and Performance Analysis

Abstract:This is the second part of the two-part paper considering the communications under the bursty mixed noise composed of white Gaussian noise and colored non-Gaussian impulsive noise. In the first part, based on Gaussian distribution and student distribution, we proposed a multivariate bursty mixed noise model and designed model parameter estimation algorithms. However, the performance of a communication system will significantly deteriorate under the bursty mixed noise if a conventional signal detection algorithm with respect to Gaussian noise is applied. To address this issue, in the second part, we leverage the probability density function (PDF) to derive the maximum likelihood (ML) demodulation methods for both linear and nonlinear modulations, including M-array PSK (M-PSK) and MSK modulation schemes. We analyze the theoretical bit error rate (BER) performance of M-PSK and present close-form BER expressions. For the MSK demodulation based on the Viterbi algorithm, we derive a lower and upper bound of BER. Simulation results showcase that the proposed demodulation methods outperform baselines by more than 2.5dB when the BER performance reaches the order of magnitude of $10^{-3}$, and the theoretical analysis matches the simulated results well.

Abstract:We investigate design and performance of communications over the bandlimited Gaussian channel with one-bit output quantization. A transceiver structure is proposed, which generates the channel input using a finite set of time-limited and approximately bandlimited waveforms, and performs oversampling on the channel output by an integrate-and-dump filter preceding the one-bit quantizer. The waveform set is constructed based on a specific bandlimited random process with certain zero-crossing properties which can be utilized to convey information. In the presence of the additive white Gaussian noise, a discrete memoryless channel model of our transceiver is derived. Consequently, we determine a closed-form expression for the high signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) asymptotic information rate of the transceiver, which can be achieved by independent and identically distributed input symbols. By evaluating the fractional power containment bandwidth, we further show that at high SNR, the achievable spectral efficiency grows roughly logarithmically with the oversampling factor, coinciding with a notable result in the absence of noise (Shamai, 1994). Moreover, the error performance of our transceiver is evaluated by low density parity check coded modulation. Numerical results demonstrate that reliable communication at rates exceeding one bit per Nyquist interval can be achieved at moderate SNR.
Sensing Mutual Information with Random Signals in Gaussian Channels: Bridging Sensing and Communication Metrics

Abstract:Sensing performance is typically evaluated by classical radar metrics, such as Cramer-Rao bound and signal-to-clutter-plus-noise ratio. The recent development of the integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) framework motivated the efforts to unify the performance metric for sensing and communication, where mutual information (MI) was proposed as a sensing performance metric with deterministic signals. However, the need of communication in ISAC systems necessitates the transmission of random signals for sensing applications, whereas an explicit evaluation for the sensing mutual information (SMI) with random signals is not yet available in the literature. This paper aims to fill the research gap and investigate the unification of sensing and communication performance metrics. For that purpose, we first derive the explicit expression for the SMI with random signals utilizing random matrix theory. On top of that, we further build up the connections between SMI and traditional sensing metrics, such as ergodic minimum mean square error (EMMSE), ergodic linear minimum mean square error (ELMMSE), and ergodic Bayesian Cramér-Rao bound (EBCRB). Such connections open up the opportunity to unify sensing and communication performance metrics, which facilitates the analysis and design for ISAC systems. Finally, SMI is utilized to optimize the precoder for both sensing-only and ISAC applications. Simulation results validate the accuracy of the theoretical results and the effectiveness of the proposed precoding designs.

Abstract:In this letter, we analyze the performance trade-off in distributed integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) networks. Specifically, with the aid of stochastic geometry theory, we derive the probability of detection of that of the coverage given user number. Based on the analytical derivations, we provide a quantitative description of the performance limits and the performance trade-off between sensing and communication in a distributed ISAC network under the given transmit power and bandwidth budget. Extensive simulations are conducted and the numerical results validate the accuracy of our derivations.

Abstract:In real production, the performance assessment of control loops has an important role. In this paper, the performance evaluation of MIMO systems is transformed into the performance evaluation of multiple single loops. To address the shortcomings of the canonical correlation analysis (CCA) method, the authors propose a principal component extraction algorithm based on entropy and mutual information projection to latent structure (E-PLS). This algorithm allows us to get the latent structure of the coupling MIMO system. Then the latent structure is modeled to construct the virtual system. On this basis, a non-Gaussian minimum entropy approach was used to evaluate the performance of the virtual system.

Abstract:This paper investigates a scalar optical wireless channel (OWC) corrupted by additive Gaussian noise. When the channel is peak- and average-intensity constrained, Chan et al. have proposed a necessary and sufficient condition for the probability distribution function (PDF) of the capacity-achieving input. We show that such a capacity-achieving input PDF is supported on finite mass points. Moreover, we provide new bounds on the number of its mass points. The upper and lower bounds are in the orders of A <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</sup> and A, respectively, where A denotes the maximum instantaneous intensity.

Abstract:Quantum information processing leverages the principles of quantum mechanics, utilizing qubits, to improve computational and communicative tasks. In this realm, the quantum channel's capacity is pivotal in determining the efficiency and accuracy of quantum information handling, with its performance being significantly influenced by channel noise. Our study aims to establish a holistic hybrid quantum noise model to determine the quantum channel capacity. In this paper, we formulated a mathematical expression for this capacity and conducted simulations for both Gaussian and non-Gaussian inputs. A hybrid noise model is constructed by convolution of Poisson-distributed quantum noise with classical additive white Gaussian noise. We characterized the quantum-classical noise and the received signal using Gaussian Mixture Models. The maximum amount of quantum information that can be reliably transmitted over a quantum channel (per use of the channel) is determined by its capacity, and entropy and related quantities like mutual information play a role in calculating this capacity. Our formulation of quantum channel capacity is derived from the mutual information shared between the transmitter and receiver, encompassing the entropies of the signals. The quantum channel presents a higher capacity-to-signal-to-noise ratio for Gaussian inputs than non-Gaussian ones.

Rethinking the fundamental performance limits of integrated sensing and communication systems

Abstract:Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) has been recognized as a key enabler and feature of future wireless networks. In the existing works analyzing the performances of ISAC, discrete-time systems were commonly assumed, which, however, overlooked the impacts of temporal, spectral, and spatial properties. To address this issue, we establish a unified information model for the band-limited continuous-time ISAC systems. In the established information model, we employ a novel sensing performance metric, called the sensing mutual information (SMI). Through analysis, we show how the SMI can be utilized as a bridge between the mutual information domain and the mean squared error (MSE) domain. In addition, we illustrate the communication mutual information (CMI)-SMI and CMI-MSE regions to identify the performance bounds of ISAC systems in practical settings and reveal the trade-off between communication and sensing performances. Moreover, via analysis and numerical results, we provide two valuable insights into the design of novel ISAC-enabled systems: i) communication prefers the waveforms of random amplitude, sensing prefers the waveforms of constant amplitude, both communication and sensing favor the waveforms of low correlations with random phases; ii) There exists a linear positive proportional relationship between the allocated time-frequency resource and the achieved communication rate/sensing MSE.

Effect of the Transition Points Mismatch on Quanta Image Sensors.

Abstract:Mathematical models and imaging models that show the relationship between the transition points mismatch of analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) and the bit error rate (BER) in single-bit and multi-bit quanta image sensors (QISs) are established. The mathematical models suggest that when the root-mean-square (r.m.s.) of the read noise in jots is 0.15e−, the standard deviation of the transition points should be less than 0.15e− to ensure that the BER is lower than 1% in the single-bit QIS, and 0.21e− to ensure that the BER is lower than 5% in the multi-bit QIS. Based on the mathematical models, the imaging models prove that the fixed-pattern noise (FPN) increases with a stronger transition point mismatch. The imaging models also compare the imaging quality in the case of different spatial oversampling factors and bit depths. The grayscale similarity index (GSI) is 3.31 LSB and 1.74 LSB when the spatial oversampling factors are 256 and 4096, respectively, in the single-bit QIS. The GSI is 1.93 LSB and 1.13 LSB when the bit depth is 3 and 4, respectively, in the multi-bit QIS. It indicates that a higher bit depth and a larger spatial oversampling factor could reduce the effect of the transition points mismatch of1-bit or n-bit ADCs.

Abstract:Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is regarded as a key technology for the next generation wireless communication, which has the potential to combine communication and radar modules efficiently and improve the performance. In millimeter wave band, multibeam ISAC is a promising architecture, where different beams are superimposed to simultaneously perform communication and sensing. In this paper, the performance of multibeam ISAC is evaluated under correlated communication and sensing channels. For communication, we evaluate the increase of communication capacity with sensing-assisted beam alignment procedure. For sensing, we derive the Cramer-Rao bound of location estimation, and use location estimation rate metric to indicate the sensing capacity. Theoretical analyses and simulation results demonstrate the improvement of sensing-assisted communication, and the tradeoff curve is provided to guide the communication-sensing power allocation design.

Abstract:The performance of a color CMOS photogate image sensor is reported. It is shown that by using two levels of correlated-double sampling it is possible to effectively cancel all fixed-pattern noise due to read-out circuit mismatch. Instead the fixed-pattern noise performance of the sensor is limited by dark current nonuniformity at low signal levels, and conversion gain nonuniformity at high signal levels. It is further shown that the imaging performance of the sensor is comparable to low-end CCD sensors but inferior to that reported for high-end CCD sensors due to low quantum efficiency, high dark current, and pixel cross-talk. As such the performance of CMOS sensors is limited at the device level rather than at the architectural level. If the imaging performance issues can be addressed at the fabrication process level without increasing cost or degrading transistor performance, CMOS has the potential to seriously challenge CCD as the solid-state imaging technology of choice due to low power dissipation and compatibility with camera system integration.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Free space optical (FSO) communication is a proficient technology with potential applications in the next generation of wireless communication. This article evaluates the performance of the FSO system under inverse Gaussian gamma (IGG) fading. A novel closed‐form equation for the cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the received signal‐to‐noise ratio (SNR) is presented by employing an intensity modulation/direct detection (IM/DD) scheme. The analytical expressions for various performance metrics such as outage probability (OP), amount of fading (AOF), and average bit error probability (ABEP) are derived for various digital modulation schemes based on the system's probability density function (PDF) and CDF. Additionally, this article presents an upper bound on OP and asymptotic analysis for the performance metrics to gain deeper insights. It is revealed that the small‐scale eddy turbulence parameter can affect the diversity order by a factor of β /2. The results demonstrate that atmospheric turbulence considerably reduces the system's performance. Finally, Monte‐Carlo simulation is performed to ascertain the correctness of the derived mathematical expressions.

Abstract:We study communication over a Gaussian multiple-access channel (MAC) with two types of transmitters: Digital transmitters hold a message from a discrete set that needs to be communicated to the receiver with vanishing error probability. Analog transmitters hold sequences of analog values, and some functions of these distributed values (but not the values themselves) need to be conveyed to the receiver, subject to a fidelity criterion such as mean squared error (MSE) or a certain maximum error with given confidence. For the case in which the computed function for the analog transmitters is a sum of values in [-1,1], we derive inner and outer bounds for the tradeoff of digital and analog rates of communication under peak and average power constraints for digital transmitters and a peak power constraint for analog transmitters. We then extend the achievability result to a class of functions that includes all linear and some non-linear functions. The practicality of our proposed communication scheme is shown in channel simulations that use a version of the scheme based on low density parity check (LDPC) coding and evaluate the system performance for different block lengths and Gaussian as well as non-Gaussian noise distributions.
