An 8-channel photonic-assisted CS system enable 5 GHz bandwidth of spectrum recognition is demonstrated experimentally, and in this system the ADC bandwidth required is as low as 40 MHz.

Abstract:Compressive sensing (CS) is a novel technology to realize sub-Nyquist sampling for measuring of sparse signals. Due to the advantages of high bandwidth offered by photonics, realization of compressive sensing in a photonic link is of great interest. In this paper, we discussed the limitations of CS in a conventional photonic link A potential solution is proposed. To further reduce sampling rate, we propose to combine the techniques of photonic time stretch and CS. In addition, the photonic CS with random mixing realized by a spatial light modulator is discussed. Theoretical limit on frequency resolution for spectral mixing is derived.

Abstract:A novel, to the best of our knowledge, photonics-assisted scheme for compressed sensing (CS) of sparse RF signals is proposed. An architecture with time-delayed dual-channel modulation of a pseudo-random binary sequence in combination with differential detection enables the generation of a rate-doubled bipolar random sequence, which largely increases the bandwidth of the CS system. In addition, the bipolarity of the random sequence ensures a zero-mean measurement matrix, which helps improve the signal recovery performance. Experimental results are presented to verify the performance improvement of the approach in comparison with the conventional single-ended photonic CS system.

Abstract:In this Letter, we present a novel structure to realize photonics-assisted compressive sensing (CS) with optical integration. In the system, a spectrally sparse signal modulates a multiwavelength continuous-wave light and then is mixed with a random sequence in optical domain. The optical signal passes through a length of dispersive fiber, the dispersion amount of which is set to ensure that the group delay between the adjacent wavelength channels is equal to the bit duration of the applied random sequence. As a result, the detected signal is a delay-and-sum version of the randomly mixed signal, which is equivalent to the function of integration required in CS. A proof-of-concept experiment with four wavelengths, corresponding to a compression factor of 4, is demonstrated. More simulation results are also given to show the potential of the technique. Abstract:In this letter, we present a novel approach to realizing photonics-assisted compressive sensing (CS) with the technique of microwave photonic filtering. In the proposed system, an input spectrally sparse signal to be captured and a random sequence are modulated on an optical carrier via two Mach–Zehnder modulators (MZMs). Therefore, the mixing process (the signal to be captured mixing with the random sequence) is realized in the optical domain. The mixed optical signal then propagates through a length of dispersive fiber. As the double-sideband modulation in a dispersive optical link leads to a frequency-dependent power fading, low-pass filtering required in the CS is then realized. A proof-of-concept experiment for compressive sampling and recovery of a signal containing three tones at 310MHz, 1GHz and 2GHz with a compression factor up to 10 is successfully demonstrated. More simulation results are also presented to recover signals within wider bandwidth and with more frequency components.

Abstract:In this Letter, we propose an approach to achieving photonics-enabled compressive sensing of sparse wideband radio frequency signals in which an incoherent broadband source is applied, and the mixing and integration functions are realized in the optical domain. A spectrum shaper is employed to slice and encode the spectrum of the broadband light according to a predetermined random sequence. Because of the dispersion-induced group delay, the mixing between the incoming signal and the random bit sequence is achieved. At the output of the spectrum shaper, an array of photodetectors is employed to realize down-sampling, and the input sparse signal can be captured in a single-shot mode. Since no pulsed laser is employed, our scheme obviates the need for time-domain synchronization between the repetitive ultra-fast pulses and the random sequence. Experimental demonstrations and numerical results are presented to verify the feasibility and potential of the approach.

Abstract:Compressive sensing (CS) in a photonic link has a high potential for acquisition of wideband sparse signals. In CS it is necessary to mix the input sparse signal with a pseudorandom sequence prior to subsampling. A pulse shaper with a spatial light modulator (SLM) can be used in photonic CS as an optical mixer to improve the speed of mixing. In this approach, the sparse signal is modulated on a chirped optical pulse and the pseudorandom sequence is recorded on the SLM within the pulse shaper. The optical mixing in the frequency domain is realized based on the principle of frequency-to-time mapping. In this paper, we investigate the performance and limitations of photonic CS with an SLM in detail. A theoretical model to describe optical mixing based on frequency-to-time mapping is presented. We point out that there is an upper limit on the length of the pseudorandom sequence recorded on the SLM that can be mixed with the sparse signal due to the condition of the far-field approximation of the frequency-to-time mapping. Since the length of the pseudorandom sequence is one of the major factors that affect the signal recovery performance in CS, this limitation should be fully considered in the system design of the CS with optical mixing in the frequency domain. We present numerical and experimental results to verify the theoretical findings. Discussion on the performance improvement is also presented.

Abstract:In this paper, a photonic-assisted multi-channel compressive sampling scheme is proposed with one pseudo-random binary sequence (PRBS) source and Wavelength Division Multiplexing-based time delay. Meanwhile, the restricted isometry property of sensing matrix determined by the optimized time delay pattern is analyzed. In experiment, a four-channel photonic-assisted system with 5-GHz bandwidth was set up, where four-channel PRBS signals were generated by adding fiber-induced constant time delays to four-wavelength modulated PRBS signal, and a signal composed of twenty tones was recovered faithfully with four analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) with only 120-MHz-bandwidth. Abstract:In this Letter, we present a photonic compressive sampling scheme based on optical sampling and random demodulation for microwave spectral analysis. A novel (to our knowledge) approach to realizing the multiplication of a pseudorandom binary sequence and the input microwave signal of interest in the optical domain is proposed, which largely simplifies the implementation of the compressive sampling. A spectrally sparse signal can be successfully captured by an electrical digitizer with a sampling rate much lower than the Nyquist rate with the help of random demodulation and the sparse reconstruction algorithm. Identification of the signals with multiple frequency components is successfully demonstrated.

Abstract:A novel approach to realize photonic compressive sensing (CS) with a multi-tap microwave photonic filter is proposed and demonstrated. The system takes both advantages of CS and photonics to capture wideband sparse signals with sub-Nyquist sampling rate. The low-pass filtering function required in the CS is realized in a photonic way by using a frequency comb and a dispersive element. The frequency comb is realized by shaping an amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) source with an on-chip micro-ring resonator, which is beneficial to the integration of photonic CS. A proof-of-concept experiment for a two-tone signal acquisition with frequencies of 350MHz and 1.25GHz is experimentally demonstrated with a compression factor up to 16.

Abstract:Compressive sensing (CS) in the photonic domain is highly promising for analog-to-information conversion of sparse signals due to its potential capability of high input bandwidth and digitization with sub-Nyquist sampling. In this paper, we suggest that the concept of delay-line based microwave photonic filter be used in photonic CS to realize the low-pass filtering (LPF) function which is required in CS. A microwave photonic filter (MPF) with a dispersive element and fiber delay lines is applied in photonic CS to achieve better performance and flexibility. In the approach, the input radio-frequency signal and the pseudorandom bit sequence (PRBS) are modulated on a multi-wavelength optical carrier and propagate through a dispersive element. The modulated optical signal is split into multiple channels with tunable delay lines. The multiple wavelengths, dispersive element and multiple channels constitute a reconfigurable low-pass microwave filter. Experiment and simulations are presented to demonstrate the feasibility and potentials of this approach.

Abstract:Aim. The introduction of the full paper reviews Refs. 1 through 6 and then proposes the research of this paper, which is explained in sections 1, 2, and 3. Their core is: "In the ideal cognitive radio (CR) systems, CR users are capable of sensing wide band spectrum simultaneously. However, due to the physical limits of front end devices, the real time entire spectrum sensing is difficult to be actualized. In order to tackle this problem, we propose a wide band spectrum sensing approach based on compressive sampling theory. First, we design a centralized multi-user parallel compressive sampling framework which realizes the high speed analog signal sampling of wide band spectrum sensing through low speed AD equipped CR users. Moreover, according to the compressive sampling theory, the proposed approach sufficiently utilizes the sparsity of primary signal on frequency domain. Thus, the base station can recover the frequency domain information of primary user by far less samples than Nyquist rate. Finally, the spectrum occupancy status can be determined by the recovery information. " The simulation results, presented in Figs. 3 and 4, reveal preliminarily that: (1) the proposed method has the higher detection probability and shorter sensing time than energy detection; (2) it needs only 10% memory units compared to conventional sensing schemes.

Abstract:An approach to realizing photonic analog-to-digital conversion based on photonic time stretch and compressive sensing (CS) technique is proposed. A multi-tone signal (spectrally sparse) within a 20 GHz bandwidth is investigated. The wideband signal is firstly stretched in the time domain by a photonic time-stretcher and then reconstructed by CS based on random demodulator (RD). The random mixing in RD is realized optically with a spatial light modulator (SLM). Thanks to the techniques of time stretch and CS, wideband spectrally-sparse signals can be acquired effectively with a sampling rate far below the Nyquist rate. A system with time stretch factor 10 and compression factor 8, which means a 1/80 of the Nyquist rate, is illustrated.

Abstract:In this paper, a systematic review is made on our research related to photonics-assisted compressive sampling (CS) systems including principle, structure and applications. We demonstrate their utility in wideband spectrum sensing and high throughput flow cytometry. Photonics-assisted CS systems not only can significantly reduce the data acquisition rate but also can achieve a large operational bandwidth (several GHz or even a few tens of GHz), which is one to two orders of magnitude larger than that of traditional electric CS systems. Single-channel and multi-channel photonicsassisted CS systems are presented in this paper and demonstrated to enable accurate reconstruction of frequency-sparse signals from only a few percent of the measurements required for Nyquist sampling. On the other hand, we also implement time-stretch-based single-pixel imaging systems with high frame rates, three orders of magnitude faster than conventional single-pixel cameras. To show their utility in biomedical applications, a real-time high-throughput imaging flow cytometer is demonstrated. In general, photonics-assisted CS systems show great potential in both wideband spectrum sensing and biomedical imaging applications.

Abstract:An approach to realizing wideband analog-to-digital conversion based on the techniques of photonic time stretch (PTS) and compressive sensing (CS) is proposed. In the system, a multitone signal within a wide bandwidth (spectrally sparse) signal is slowed down in the time domain by a photonic time stretcher. The stretched signal is then down-sampled and reconstructed by a random-demodulator-based CS scheme, in which random mixing is realized in an optical domain. Thanks to the techniques of PTS and CS, wideband spectrally sparse signals can be acquired with a sampling rate far below the Nyquist rate of the original signal. The optical random mixing applied in the system has the advantages of lower distortions and larger bandwidth compared to its electrical counterpart. In order to construct a Gaussian measurement matrix with zero mean, balanced detection is applied after the optical mixer. In addition, in order to eliminate the dc component and the even-order harmonics of the stretched signal, we propose to use balanced PTS technique in the system. We demonstrate that a system with a time stretch factor 20 and a compression factor 4 can effectively acquire a spectrally sparse wideband signal, which means a sampling rate as low as 1/80 of the Nyquist rate.

Abstract:A novel and practical compressive sampling system is proposed based on optical mixing and direct detection and our system is established with a multi-wavelength source, two intensity modulators, an electric M-sequence generator, and multiple photodetectors. In experiment, a compressive sampling system of two channels is set up, which is fIrstly reported, and the predefIned signal including two narrow-band components is recovered successfully for 2.55GHz bandwidth.

Abstract:Future communication networks will integrate the sensing functions, requiring the system to utilize limited radio resources to simultaneously achieve high-throughput communication and high-precision sensing. Compressive sensing technology is of great potential for such applications. In this paper, we design an efficient multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) - orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system based on compressive sensing. Specifically, we obtain the delay-Doppler and angle of departure (AoD) / angle of arrival (AoA) measurements by exploiting the sparse and random time-frequency resource allocation patterns and array structures. Our approach leverages the sparsity of environmental information and employs the Kronecker method to construct a compressive measurement matrix with Vandermonde structure. Our method provides high-resolution performance comparable to Nyquist sampling, while significantly reducing the usage of time-frequency resource units and the number of antennas, without introducing excessive additional hardware links for sensing and computation. Numerical simulations demonstrate the feasibility of the method, and our results indicate that compressive sensing recovery algorithms outperform traditional method with a lower probability of recovery errors and better robustness.
