Abstract:We analyze transmission characteristics of two coupled identical cavities, of either standing-wave (SW) or traveling-wave (TW) type, based on temporal coupled mode theory. Mode splitting is observed for both directly (cavity-cavity) and indirectly (cavity-waveguide-cavity) coupled cavity systems. The effects of direct and indirect couplings, if coexisting in one system, can offset each other such that no mode splitting occurs and the original single-cavity resonant frequency is retained. By tuning the configuration of the coupled cavity system, one can obtain different characteristics in transmission spectra, including splitting in transmission, zero transmission, Fano-type transmission, electromagnetically-induced-transparency (EIT)-like transmission, and electromagnetically-induced-absorption (EIA)-like transmission. It is also interesting to notice that a side-coupled SW cavity system performs similarly to an under-coupled TW cavity. The results are useful for the design of cavity-based devices for integration in nanophotonics. (C) 2010 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We study the interaction between quasi-modes in dielectric cavities of stadium shape. We show that dependence of two coupled modes on the cavity deformation can be described by the coupled-level model, and extract complex coupling constant. Depending on the value of coupling constant we observe several kinds of quasi-mode evolution.

Abstract:The coupling among waveguides on different planes occurs in both transverse and vertical directions. Using the spatial multiwaveguide system, we can interconnect devices in different layers effectively. Based on the weakly coupled-mode theory, the planar waveguide coupling theory is generalized to spatial multiwaveguide system, and the coupled-mode equations of the spatial multiwaveguide system are presented. As an application example, the coupled-mode equation is applied to analyze the coupling properties in spatial three-and four-waveguide systems. The analytical expressions of light intensity distributions and coupling length in the two specific cases are given, and the three-dimensional full-vector beam propagation method is used to verify the analytical results. The analysis result shows that the spatial multiwaveguide system permits uniform and nonuniform power splitting in two orthogonal directions. These analytical formulas are useful in designing three-dimensional directional couplers, which is based on spatial multiwaveguide coupling.

Abstract:Resonance cavity is a basic element in optics, which has wide applications in optical devices. Coupled cavities (CCs) designed in metal-insulator-metal (MIM) bus waveguide are investigated through the finite difference time domain method and coupled-mode theory. In the CCs, the resonant modes of the surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) split with the thickness decreasing of the middle baffle. Through the coupled-mode theory analysis, it is found that the phase differences introduced in opposite and positive couplings between two cavities lead to mode splitting. The resonant wavelength of positive coupling mode can be tuned in a large range (about 644 nm) through adjusting the coupling strength, which is quite different from the classical adjustment of the optical path in a single cavity. Based on the resonances of the CCs in the MIM waveguide, more compact devices can be designed to manipulate SPPs propagation. A device is designed to realize flexible multiple-wavelength SPPs routing. The coupling in CC structures can be applied to the design of easy-integrated laser cavities, filters, multiple-wavelength management devices in SPPs circuits, nanosensors, etc.

Abstract:In the past decade, strong coupling between light and matter has transitioned from a theoretical idea to an experimental reality. This represents a new field of quantum light–matter interaction, which makes the coupling strength comparable to the transition frequencies in the system. In addition, the achievement of multimode strong coupling has led to such applications as quantum information processing, lasers, and quantum sensors. This paper introduces the theoretical principle of multimode strong coupling based on surface plasmons and reviews the research related to the multimode interactions between light and matter. Perspectives on the future development of plasmonic multimode coupling are also discussed.

Abstract:Inefficient coupling between dielectric guided mode and plasmon mode has been overlooked in the past. The coupling mechanism is essentially different from the conventional coupling between dielectric modes. Based on qualitative theoretical analysis, we proposed two methods to strengthen the coupling between dielectric waveguide modes and exterior plasmon whispering gallery modes. One is using a U-shaped bent waveguide to break the adiabatic mode conversion process, and the other is to utilize higher-order dielectric mode to reach phase matching with plasmon mode. Both the transmission spectrum of waveguide and the energy spectrum of cavity demonstrate that the coupling efficiency can be greatly improved. These simple configurations are potential for wide applications, for example, tunable integrated optical devices and sensors.

Abstract:We study the coupling of mode in time for non-Hermitian cavities. Using variational principle, we provide a self-consistent approach to study the mode hybridization in non-Hermitian cavities from the first-principle of Maxwell's equations. We first extend the reaction concept for time reversal adjoint system using the scalar inner product. We apply our theory to the non-Hermitian parity-time symmetric cavities, and obtain excellent agreement with results obtained by finite element fullwave simulations. In contrast, the conventional coupled mode theory using complex inner product fails to capture the bifurcation of the dispersion of parity-time symmetric cavities, as non-Hermicity increases. Our theory may have potential applications in non-Hermitian optical systems. © 2016 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:A multi-layer structure consisting of metal and dielectric layers which allows coupling between surface plasmon polaritons and waveguide modes is studied by calculating reflectivity curves of incident light. A wide waveguide structure is employed to ensure SPP resonance with different order waveguide modes when varying coupling layer thicknesses. Multi-hybrid plasmonic waveguide modes (HPWG) are formed in the coupled system. The weight fractions of metal SPP deduced from losses of HPWG modes are calculated for each hybridized mode, which can be considered as a parameter of evaluating coupling strength. Three different evolution stages for hybrid modes are clearly distinguished based on the variation of loss with spacer layer thickness. The interaction between SPP and waveguide experiences a series of change from weak Fano resonance, via strong coupling, finally to weak coupling process. In case of strong coupling regime, the contribution of metal SPP for low order hybrid modes starts to increase and then decreases with decreasing spacer layer thicknesses. Furthermore, difference of resonant behavior for hybrid modes in both weak coupling stages is analyzed in detail.

Abstract:We show that coupling among multiple resonances can be conveniently introduced and controlled by boundary wave scattering. This is demonstrated in optical microcavities of quasicircular shapes, where the couplings of multiple modes are determined by the scattering from harmonic boundary deformations. We analyze these couplings using a perturbation theory, which gives an intuitive understanding of the lowest-order and higher-order scattering processes. Different scattering paths between two boundary waves can either enhance or reduce their coupling strength. The effect of controlled multimode coupling is most pronounced in the direction of output from an open cavity, as the coupling can cause a dramatic change of the external cavity field distribution.

Abstract:We develop a framework of the spatial coupled-mode theory for surface plasmon polariton (SPP) excitation at metallic gratings. The spatial mode coupling process is investigated in order to understand the spatial field distribution during the SPP excitation. We show that the spatial mode coupling coefficients are constrained by the energy conservation, the time-reversal symmetry, and the geometry mirror symmetry. As the result, a semi-analytical form is obtained to fast compute the total field distribution for an arbitrary incident light. This study paves the way for optimizing the incident light modulation to dynamically control the localized intensity distribution of the SPP excitation, which is practically significant in surface-enhanced applications, such as plasmonic tweezers, optical sensors, and spectroscopy.

Abstract:The numerical complex coupled-mode method used in a metal thin-film optic element is applied to a planar multilayer optical waveguide. All modes are required to satisfy Helmholtz Vectorial equation in an optical waveguide including bound and leaky modes at forward and backward propagation directions. First-order perturbation theory is developed and applied by means of lossy materials including metal thin-film and perfectly matched layers at the boundaries. our suggested structure discontinues in one direction and gives rise to an asymmetric metal thin-film at the core for investigating the transmission and reflection coefficient using mode-matching theory in two sides of the truncation. Finally, we compared the computed numerical results with the one that we obtained with the finite difference solver method. This study provides several advantages of CCMT in asymmetric temporal optical resonators that are in huge demand for today's integrated optical technology.

Abstract:We propose a combined structure that can freely control the transmission of spoof surface plasmon polarizations in the terahertz region. The combined structure is composed of a corrugated metallic strip and a textured closed surface with defect units. The spoof surface plasmon polarizations with different frequencies can be effectively trapped by the defect units with different scales in the localized spoof plasmonic structure. The designer structures provide the enhanced ability to modulate the spoof surface plasmon polarizations transmitted in the waveguide, which may provide potential applications in optical switching and sensing in the terahertz region.
Collective multimode strong coupling in plasmonic nanocavities

Abstract:Plasmonic nanocavities enable access to the quantum properties of matter, but are often simplified to single mode models despite their complex multimode structure. Here, we show that off-resonant plasmonic modes in fact play a crucial role in strong coupling, and determine the onset of a novel collective interaction. Our analysis reveals that $n$ strongly coupled plasmonic modes, introduce up to $n(n+1)/2$ oscillation frequencies that depend on their coupling strengths and detunings from the quantum emitter. Furthermore, we identify three distinct regions as the coupling strength increases: (1) single mode, (2) multimode, and (3) collective multimode strong coupling. Our findings enhance the understanding of quantum dynamics in realistic plasmonic environments and demonstrate their potential to achieve ultra-fast energy transfer in light-driven quantum technologies.

Abstract:According to the electromagnetic field distributions, there exist two kinds of coupled spoof surface plasmon polaritons（SSPPs）, the symmetric and anti-symmetric modes, in the three-dimensional（3D） subwavelength spoof–insulator–spoof（SIS） waveguide. We study the dispersion and excitation of the two kinds of coupled SSPPs supported by the 3D SIS waveguide. The evolution of the dispersion with the thickness and gap width of the waveguide is numerically investigated,and we give a theoretical analysis according to the coupling mechanism. Specially, based on the coupling mechanism,we design a zipper structure, through which the excitation and propagation of the anti-symmetric coupled modes can be realized effectively.

Abstract:Coupled mode theory is able to account for the coupling of electromagnetic waves on multiple adjacent metal spiral structures. Related simulations, experiments, and calculations also prove this theory. Therefore, the amplitude and bandwidth of resonance can be adjusted by structural and material parameters. It also provides a method to verify the existence of additional coupling terms between the three couplings. Coupled mode theory (CMT) is widely used to analyze the coupling relationship of plasmons and metasurfaces. However, some details involving coupled structures remain obscure. Herein, the coefficients in CMT are properly defined to solve the problems of inaccurate fitting from two particles to three or more. The proposed improved coupled mode theory (i‐CMT) can perfectly express both the amplitude and phase of transmission curve of dimeric and trimeric mutual coupled systems. A surface plasmonic structure containing multiple metallic spiral structures is fabricated to experimentally verify the accuracy of the i‐CMT. The experimental results are consistent with the theoretical and simulated values, proving the feasibility of using the i‐CMT to analyze and design asymmetric coupled devices. Moreover, the application of the i‐CMT confirms the presence of additional coupling terms in three or more coupled objects, making the calculation of eigenfrequency more accurate.

Abstract:We propose a flexibly designed photonic system based on ultrathin corrugated metallic "H-bar" waveguide that supports spoof surface plasmon polariton (SPP) at microwave frequencies. Five designs were presented, in order to demonstrate flexibility according to varying height, period, core width, rotation, and shifting on the "H-bar" unit of the waveguide. The propagation constant between two hybrid designs of period and height structure was then shown in order to study the coupling effect. Next, we constructed a coupled waveguide array that followed the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model. This model was constructed by a hybrid design with the identical propagation constant of each waveguide, except it had dimerized spacing. The propagation feature of topological zero mode was then observed as theoretically expected in the dimerized array. Our proposed spoof SPP waveguide array has great flexibility to be used as a powerful experiment platform, particularly in photonic simulation of the quantum or topological phenomena described by Schrödinger equation in condensed matters.

Abstract:In the presence of loss and gain, the coupled mode equation on describing the mode hybridization of various waveguides or cavities, or cavities coupled to waveguides becomes intrinsically non-Hermitian. In such non-Hermitian waveguides, the standard coupled coupled mode theory fails. We generalize the coupled mode theory with a properly defined inner product based on reaction conservation. We apply our theory to the non-Hermitian parity-time symmetric waveguides, and obtain excellent agreement with results obtained by finite element fullwave simulations. The theory presented here is typically formulated in space to study coupling between waveguides, which can be transformed into time domain by proper reformulation to study coupling between non-Hermitian resonators. Our theory has the strength of studying non-Hermitian optical systems with inclusion of the full vector fields, thus is useful to study and design non-Hermitian devices that support asymmetric and even nonreciprocal light propagations
