Abstract:Based on the metallic-dielectric high contrast gratings, we proposed two new different schemes to achieve the unidirectional coupling of incident free-space light into the plasmonic waveguides. Using the cascaded metal-air sub-gratings (structure 1) or metallic-dielectric subwavelength periodic gratings (structure 2), the ultra-broadband and wide-angular SPPs excitation could be both achieved. The operation principle and performance of the structures are analyzed and discussed, respectively.
Structurally-tolerant Vertical Directional Coupling Between Metal-Insulator-metal Plasmonic Waveguide and Silicon Dielectric Waveguide

Abstract:Vertical directional coupling between a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) plasmonic waveguide and a conventional dielectric waveguide is investigated. The coupling length, extinction ratio, insertion loss and coupling efficiency of the hybrid coupler are analyzed. As an example, when the separation between the two waveguides is 250 nm, a maximum coupling efficiency of 73%, an insertion loss of -1.4 dB and an extinction ratio of 16 dB can be achieved at a coupling length of 4.5 microm at 1.55 microm wavelength. A particular feature of this hybrid coupler is that it is highly tolerant to the structural parameters of the plasmonic waveguide and the misalignment between the two waveguides. The performance of this hybrid coupler as a TM polarizer is also analyzed and a maximum extinction ratio of 44 dB and an insertion loss of -0.18 dB can be obtained. The application of this hybrid coupler includes the signal routing between plasmonic waveguides and dielectric waveguides in photonic integrated circuits and the polarization control between TE and TM modes. In addition, it provides an approach for efficiently exciting MIM plasmonic modes with conventional dielectric modes.
A Direct Near-Field Observation of Conversion Between Waveguide Modes and Leaky Modes in Periodic Metal Structures

Abstract:In order to directly observe the conversion between guided-wave modes and leaky-wave modes in a periodic structure, quadrilateral periodic metal diaphragms arranged in two ways on metal surfaces were analyzed. In the first scheme, each unit cell in the periodic structure contains a metal diaphragm, of which the dispersion characteristics of periodic structures were analyzed by the finite element method. The results of the numerical simulation show that by adjusting lattice constants of periodic structures and geometrical parameters of metal diaphragms, the transmission bandwidth of the present 1-D periodic metal diaphragm structures could be limited to X-band, where the transmission characteristics are easy to be measured. In the second scheme, a pair of mirror-symmetric and staggered quadrilateral metal diaphragms is introduced into a unit cell. It can be found in the theoretical calculation that a new dispersion curve, which passes through the light line in a high frequency range, can be exhibited. The propagation constants of dispersion curves become complex numbers and provide highly directional electromagnetic radiation that scans as the frequency changes. After the relative positions of the two metal diaphragms were properly adjusted, the frequency range of the forbidden band gap between two dispersion curves can be minimized, so as to increase the transmission bandwidth of the 1-D periodic metal structures. The experimentally measured results show that the dispersion curves of the two periodic structures were highly consistent with the theoretical results. The narrowing of the band gap could be verified by measuring the $S$ -parameters. The near-field measurement of the periodic metal structures can demonstrate the conversion between the guided-wave modes and the leaky-wave modes, and the far-field measurement can show the frequency dependence of beam elevation. We expect that these artificial material structures could be widely used for designing new microwave and terahertz band devices.

Abstract:An efficient and unidirectional optical coupling scheme for metal-dielectric-metal (MDM) waveguides with wide-angle and ultra-broadband efficiency is proposed and demonstrated. Based on joint effects of the plasmonic critical angle phenomenon (PCA), the zero-order grating resonance, and the first-order Fabry–Perot (FP) resonance of the MDM waveguide, the illuminated light could be efficiently coupled into MDM plasmonic waveguide with angular-full-width-half-maximum (AFWHM) widen to 50° over a broad wavelength range 750–1000nm. The operation principle and performance of the structure are clarified and theoretically illustrated.

Abstract:In summary, we have presented an H-shaped plasmonic coupler which is based on the metal-dielectric-metal based nano-slot waveguides. The analyses of the plasmonic coupler have been carried out by using the volume integral equation method. The parametric studies of several geometry parameters have also been performed. From the results we obtained, it is found that light can be efficiently coupled into different ports and the operating wavelength of the coupler can be effectively tuned by varying the ratio between width a and b.

Abstract:A coupler is proposed to interface a hybrid dielectric-loaded plasmonic waveguide (HDLPW) with a silicon photonic slab waveguide. The HDLPW is firstly designed and optimized to attain the best tradeoff between the mode confinement and the propagation distance. The designed coupler is inspired from the taper configuration and numerically modeled through finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation. The results demonstrate that a high confinement and low loss of the energy is achieved from a silicon photonic slab waveguide into the dielectric slot of area 50×200nm2 in the HDLPW. The transmission attained through the coupler with a compact size of 400nm is found to be as high as 80% (1dB). Further, the planar nature of taper configuration makes the coupler easy to fabricate using the state-of-the-art CMOS facilities. The proposed coupler is useful in enabling the integration between photonic and hybrid plasmonic waveguides and thus realizing on-chip hybrid integrated circuits.

Abstract:Metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguides with subwavelength apertures exhibit unique properties that are considered breakthroughs in surface plasma technology. In this paper, we established a surface plasmon polariton (SPP) mode of MIM structure as well as a theoretical model of reflectivity and excitation coefficients to clarify the SPP mode structure. During simulation calculations, attenuation of the TM ground state mode with large-thickness dielectrics is over the oscillation mode, which is obviously different from the traditional dielectric waveguide. The TE mode exhibits characteristics of anamorphic dielectric optical waveguides, and its propagation distance is longer than that of the TM0 mode. With increasing length, the cavity quality factor Q increases, which indicates that the SPP reflection is limited. The quality factor of the cavity and the end-face have a close relationship. MIM waveguides with larger Q values can produce optical waves coupled with the SPP mode. In this paper, we analyzed SPP propagation constants and attenuation coefficients to promote the development of an integrated surface plasmon.

Abstract:Based on the contra-directional coupling, a composite structure consisting of two coupled metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguides is proposed to act as an attractive plasmonic reflector. By introducing a defect into one of the MIM waveguides, we show that such a composite structure can be operated as a plasmonic nanocavity with a high quality factor. Both symmetric and anti-symmetric cavity modes are supported in the plasmonic cavity, and their resonance frequencies can be tuned by controlling the defect width. The present structures could have a significant impact for potential applications such as surface plasmon mirrors, filters and solid-state cavity quantum electrodynamics. Copyright 2012 Author(s). Nonreciprocal Magneto-Plasmonic Waveguide with Compact Metal-Sandwiched Structure

Abstract:A magneto-optical (MO) metal-sandwiched multilayered structure composed of metal, MO medium and dielectric buffer layers is presented and investigated by finite-element-method-based-mode solver and perturbation theory. The results show that this structure exhibits large nonreciprocal phase shift, strong mode confinement in the narrow buffer layers as well as very low propagation loss. The propagation length with 1 dB loss is much longer than the required length of pi/2 nonreciprocal phase shifts in this structure. The modal area is smaller than half of the conventional MO waveguides. This phenomenon can be used to achieve a compact plasmonic isolator based on the Mach-Zehnder interferometer.

Abstract:Inefficient coupling between dielectric guided mode and plasmon mode has been overlooked in the past. The coupling mechanism is essentially different from the conventional coupling between dielectric modes. Based on qualitative theoretical analysis, we proposed two methods to strengthen the coupling between dielectric waveguide modes and exterior plasmon whispering gallery modes. One is using a U-shaped bent waveguide to break the adiabatic mode conversion process, and the other is to utilize higher-order dielectric mode to reach phase matching with plasmon mode. Both the transmission spectrum of waveguide and the energy spectrum of cavity demonstrate that the coupling efficiency can be greatly improved. These simple configurations are potential for wide applications, for example, tunable integrated optical devices and sensors.

Abstract:Efficient broadband coupling of light between a dielectric waveguide and a hybrid plasmonic waveguide is investigated theoretically. A plasmonic linear taper is used as a coupler which connects the two types of waveguides. Broadband coupling is realized by such a compact plasmonic taper with a length of only 0.4 microm, which achieves a coupling efficiency of 70% (1.5 dB) at the 1.55 microm telecommunication wavelength.

Abstract:A hybrid coupler composed of a slot plasmonic waveguide and a dielectric waveguide is proposed and its coupling characteristics are analyzed. The simulation results show that the ultra-small mode of the slot plasmonic waveguide can be excited efficiently by the dielectric waveguide mode within the coupling length of just several microns, which provides an interface between the slot plasmonic devices and dielectric devices. Meanwhile, based on this hybrid the coupler, a highly integrated refractive index sensor could be realized.

Abstract:On the basis of transformation optics, we propose an approach to couple surface plasmon waves across gaps in a dielectric/metal interface. The coupler employs a slab of complementary medium with negative refraction index to virtually bridge the gap by optically compensating the rest air region in the gap. Several design examples through transformation optics have been demonstrated which could enable plasmonic waves to propagate through two-dimensional gaps in metal surfaces with transversal offset, vertical offset or tilt geometry. The functionality of the proposed couplers has been validated through finite-element method-based full-wave simulations.

Abstract:Unidirectional optical manipulation, especially the coupling from a vertical light beam to a waveguide unidirectionally, is desirable in photonic integration. We first propose a hybrid unidirectional meta-coupler for vertical incidence to a high-refractive-index waveguide in telecom wavelength, a periodic plasmonic metasurface composed of metal-insulator-metal unit cells is used for phase matching. Three designs are given for devices working around wavelengths 0.85, 1.31, and 1.55 mu m. The simulated coupling efficiencies are all around 70%, and the 1 dB coupling bandwidths are 29, 82, and 105 nm, respectively. Our approach paves the way for the applications of optical metasurfaces to planar lightwave circuits. (C) 2017 Optical Society of America

Abstract:A new scheme for unidirectional coupling of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) from freely propagating light into a metal-insulator-metal waveguide is proposed, which is composed of an asymmetric double-slit of different widths sandwiched by symmetric grooves. A theoretical model based on coupled-mode equations is developed to facilitate structure design and elucidate the underlying physical mechanism. With the model, the asymmetric double-slit with different widths is designed for unidirectional launching of SPPs with an ultrahigh extinction ratio of 44.8 dB at the wavelength 800 nm. A method of stepwise design is proposed for simplicity of design and convenience of analysis. Proof-of-principle demonstrations show that an ultrahigh extinction ratio of 37.1 dB and significant field enhancement for the proposed whole structure are obtained. In addition, an ultracompact plasmonic dichroic splitter based on the asymmetric double-slit with high extinction ratios of 24.2 and 21.8 dB at splitting wavelengths of 800 and 900 nm is achieved, and the lateral dimension of the plasmonic dichroic splitter is only 760 nm.

Abstract:A finite width dielectric-metal-dielectric (DMD) waveguide placed on a substrate is numerically investigated near the telecom wavelength lambda = 1550 nm by the finite element method. With proper waveguide sizes, the asymmetrical DMD waveguide can support hybrid long-range surface plasmon-polariton modes which have tight field confinement (approximately 700 nm) and long propagation lengths (L> 300 microm) simultaneously. Compact plasmonic waveguide-ring resonators (WRRs) based on such asymmetrical DMD waveguide show high quality factors compared with dielectric-loaded surface plasmon-polariton, channel plasmon polariton, plasmonic whispering-gallery microcavity, and pure dielectric waveguide cases.
