Abstract:The present study reviews recent research into urban community sports in China. Whilst affirming the validity of the research the study indicates that there are some pitfalls that need to be avoided in such research, for example: the basic conceptual framework is superficial; the research design is inappropriate; and the research instruments employed are inadequate in terms of innovation and depth. The study suggests that Chinese culture, society and sport practices should be taken account of when overseas frames of reference are employed.

Abstract:In the past 40 years, software engineering has emerged as an important sub-field of computer science and has made significant contribution to the software industry. Now it is gradually becoming a new independent discipline. This paper presents a survey of software engineering development from a research perspective. Firstly, the history of software engineering is reviewed with focus on the driving forces of software technology, the software engineering framework and the milestones of software engineering development. Secondly, after reviewing the past academic efforts, the current research activities are surveyed and new challenges brought by Internet are analyzed. Software engineering researches and activities in China are also reviewed. The work in Peking University is described as a representative.

Abstract:ABSTRACTIn the past 40 years, software engineering has emerged as an important sub-field of computer science. The quality and productivity of software have been improved and the cost and risk of software development been decreased due to the contributions made in this sub-field. The software engineering community needs to invest much more efforts to cope with the drastically increasing demands on the information technology as well as the extremely open and dynamic nature of the Internet. The history of software engineering is reviewed with emphasis on the driving forces of software and the milestones of software engineering development. The history of software engineering in China is reviewed with emphasis on the relationship between software engineering and the software industry. Based on the above reviews, we argue that software engineering should become an independent discipline along with computer science and co-operative efforts from academia, governments and industries should be needed for the harmonious development of software engineering. Some results are presented based on China's experience of developing software engineering under this model.

Abstract:Glass published the first report on the assessment of systems and software engineering scholars and institutions two decades ago. The ongoing, annual survey of publications in this field provides fund managers, young scholars, graduate students, etc. with useful information for different purposes. However, the studies have been questioned by some critics because of a few shortcomings of the evaluation method. It is actually very hard to reach a widely recognized consensus on such an assessment of scholars and institutions. This paper presents a module and automated method for assessment and trends analysis in software engineering compared with the prior studies. To achieve a more reasonable evaluation result, we take into consideration more high-quality publications, the rank of each publication analyzed, and the different roles of authors named on each paper in question. According to the 7638 papers published in 36 publications from 2008 to 2013, the statistics of research subjects roughly follow power laws, implying the interesting Matthew Effect. We then identify the Top 20 scholars, institutions and countries or regions in terms of a new evaluation rule based on the frequently-used one. The top-ranked scholar is Mark Harman of the University College London, UK, the top-ranked institution is the University of California, USA, and the top-ranked country is the USA. Besides, we also show two levels of trend changes based on the EI classification system and user-defined uncontrolled keywords, as well as noteworthy scholars and institutions in a specific research area. We believe that our results would provide a valuable insight for young scholars and graduate students to seek possible potential collaborators and grasp the popular research topics in software engineering.

Design/methodology/approach – Summarizing previous research results mainly contributed by two research groups of Zhejiang University and Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Findings – Computational intelligence plays an essential role in studying inverse problems and optimizations. Originality/value – An up-to-date review on the current status of numerical methodologies, especially computational intelligences, for inverse problems and optimizations contributed by Chinese researchers.

Abstract:Based on publications covered by the Web of Science in engineering field,international collaboration between the UK and China has been explored from various perspectives.Comparative studies are mainly focused on China’s collaboration with the USA,Germany,Japan and India.The Integrated Impact Indicator(I3) created by Loet Leydesdorff and his coauthors is used for evaluating impact of publications.China has entered a fast developing period in engineering research,China’s internationally collaborated publications have increased exponentially.The USA,the UK,Canada,Singapore,Japan and Australia are China’s major partners in the concerned area.Collaboration between China and the UK,contributes greatly to the productivity of the UK but not so to that of China.China’s impact in engineering field has increased significantly.International collaboration plays an important role in raising impact of either China or the UK.

Abstract:Context: Data synthesis is one of the most significant tasks in Systematic Literature Review (SLR). Software Engineering (SE) researchers have adopted a variety of methods of synthesizing data that originated in other disciplines. One of the qualitative data synthesis methods is meta-ethnography, which is being used in SE SLRs. Objective: We aim at studying the adoption of meta-ethnography in SE SLRs in order to understand how this method has been used in SE. Method: We conducted a tertiary study of the use of meta-ethnography by reviewing sixteen SLRs. We carried out an empirical inquiry by integrating SLR and confirmatory email survey. Results: There is a general lack of knowledge, or even awareness, of different aspects of meta-ethnography and/or how to apply it. Conclusion: There is a need of investment in gaining in-depth knowledge and skills of correctly applying meta-ethnography in order to increase the quality and reliability of the findings generated from SE SLRs. Our study reveals that meta-ethnography is a suitable method to SE research. We discuss challenges and propose recommendations of adopting meta-ethnography in SE. Our effort also offers a preliminary checklist of the systematic considerations for doing meta-ethnography in SE and improving the quality of meta-ethnographic research in SE.

Abstract:Nowadays, software permeates almost every aspect of our lives. To produce complex and large-scale software products, a large number of software engineers are required. Accordingly, researchers and educators recognize the importance of Software Engineering Education (SEE), and many studies related to SEE have been published in recent years. To synthesize the large amount of research in SEE, some Systematic Literature Reviews (SLRs) focusing on different areas of SEE have been conducted and reported. However, due to their limited focuses, none of these SLRs is able to depict an overall state-of-the-art for SEE. To remedy this, we conducted a tertiary study on SEE, which identifies 26 relevant SLRs published between 2004 and 2019. By classifying and positioning these SLRs in two dimensions, i.e. the education methods/tools applied for SEE and the research topics related to SEE, we present a landscape of SEE, which locates the SLRs on SEE and their research dimensions. Further, we collected the issues studied in the published research and those that need to be addressed for instructors. This paper also discusses the challenges of the current SEE research landscape.

Abstract:The engineering ethics research in China's academic circles has been carried out in three levels: the first level is the metatheoretical study of engineering ethics,including the studies of the contents,disciplinary position and research purposes of engineering ethics; the second is the reflection on the practice of engineering ethics,including ethical conflicts,ethical principle and practical way in engineering practices; the third is the ethical examination to some specific problems,involving sensitive industries and links in engineering practices and conflict of interest. Presently,theoretical study of engineering ethics in China is not mature yet,but the research subject has an obvious feature of being professional. In addition,more researches are needed to be done in the ethical thoughts concerning normal engineering projects being or to be constructed,and applied engineering technologies. The ethics study in China has shown a positive tendency of producing an increasing number of research findings,strengthening the discipline construction,and combing qualitative research with quantitative research.

Abstract:Being one of the most important markets in the world, China now has a growing need for technical communication talents, especially in international companies and local ones that are expanding their global business. Global enterprises like Microsoft and Apple have tailored their documentations and products for the Chinese market, and Chinese local giants including Huawei, Alibaba, and Baidu have launched their own independent teams for better technical documentation. Because of the shortage of people educated as technical communicators and the huge market demand, an increasing number of colleges and universities in China have realized the need to educate more excellent technical communicators, including a pioneer in this field - Peking University, which has launched the first technical communication program in the school of Software and Microelectronics in 2017. Because most studies are outdated, and the universities in China are in great need of a curricula guidance, an up-to-date overview and analysis of the current status of technical communication in China is of great necessity. Therefore, this extended abstract is aiming to provide brief answers to the following questions: 1. What is the status of technical communication in China nowadays? 2. Abstract:To depict,understand,evaluate,predict,control,manage or enhance software-related artifacts,researchers and practitioners often rely on empirical methods.Empirical methods have been widely used in software engineering,and they are attracting increasing attention over the years.By conducting a systematic mapping,this paper aims to provide a literature survey of 250 papers published in a typical journal—Empirical Software Engineering,from January 2013 to June 2017.With qualitative and quantitative analysis,this survey reveals the commonly used empirical research methods,research purposes,and the application of the methods in subfields of software engineering,including the solved problems and some new features.The findings also cover the use of open source projects,data source,data collection methods and commonly used mathematical statistics methods.Finally,this paper illustrates validity threats and discusses the future work,opportunity and some open issues of empirical research in the era of big data.

Abstract:This paper reviews current IS research about China which has been published in international IT/IS journals and conference proceedings from 1998 to 2007.Papers by Chinese mainland authors and by overseas authors are compared in terms of research topics,research levels,and research methods.Research by these two types of authors are further compared with Chinese domestic IS research[using results presented in Ji et al.(2007)],and with international IS research[using results presented in Vessey et al.(2002)].We found that the research methods used by Chinese mainland IS researchers in international publications are very similar to those used by other international IS researchers, while their research topics are close to those in Chinese domestic publications.For the overseas authors,both the research topic profile and research methods are pretty similar with international patterns.
Systematic Literature Review of Gender and Software Engineering in Asia

Abstract:It is essential to discuss the role, difficulties, and opportunities concerning people of different gender in the field of software engineering research, education, and industry. Although some literature reviews address software engineering and gender, it is still unclear how research and practices in Asia exist for handling gender aspects in software development and engineering. We conducted a systematic literature review to grasp the comprehensive view of gender research and practices in Asia. We analyzed the 32 identified papers concerning countries and publication years among 463 publications. Researchers and practitioners from various organizations actively work on gender research and practices in some countries, including China, India, and Turkey. We identified topics and classified them into seven categories varying from personal mental health and team building to organization. Future research directions include investigating the synergy between (regional) gender aspects and cultural concerns and considering possible contributions and dependency among different topics to have a solid foundation for accelerating further research and getting actionable practices.

Abstract:Requirements engineering has gained growing attention in both academia and industry, as today's software intensive systems are expected to provide highly user-centric functions and qualities. Thus, it is important to understand under what situations existing requirements engineering practice is not working well. Continuing our probe into the industrial practices status quo, this paper reports the results from a recent survey of requirements practices in China in 2009. The web-based survey of requirements engineering practices focuses on requirements elicitation techniques, requirements representation techniques.
