Abstract:Recent opinion dynamics models following fusion mechanisms have gained considerable attention due to explaining the emergence of consensus or divisions during social interaction. However, existing models tend to formalize opinion fusion by representing interactions as the aggregation of multiple single-source influences. Unfortunately, these aggregation approaches neglect the opinion reinforcement and confrontation within groups, thereby hindering the accurate simulation and analysis of opinion evolution in various higher-order interaction scenarios, such as conferences or social media platforms. To this effect, this paper proposes Simplex Bounded Confidence (SBC) model, which represents higher-order interactions as simplices and considers the multiple-sources influence within a simplex. In detail, we first introduce opinion cuboid and opinion equivalence mechanism to construct a unified quantification of the multiple-sources influence in different interaction orders. Based on that, we propose SBC dynamics by incorporating an isotropic bounded confidence function and derive its local mean-field approximation. Furthermore, we present the Zero Existence Theorem, which offers an analytical framework to analyze the equilibrium state of opinion evolution during higher-order interactions. Numerical simulations on random simplicial complexes highlight the emergence of novel phenomena in the proposed SBC such as an increased bias of the common equilibrium state induced by higher-order interaction and lower confidence. Our results contribute to the understanding of extreme consensus formation and provide valuable insights into the optimal interaction size for guiding public opinion.
