Abstract:As the impact of meteorological information becomes more extensive, the demand of user application interface and interaction effect is increasingly high, the necessity of the application code portability gets more evident, we selected the cross-platform, cross-browser Web front-end technology—Silverlight, combined with WebService interface provided by Bing Maps, designed a Silverlight-based meteorological service system to make any user at any time, any place connected to the Internet, automatically acquire the real-time severe weather warning signals and other conventional weather forecast released by meteorological department. The system provides a WebService-based GIS function.Studies show that the combination of rich client and network services is feasible in the Web Map Service.

Abstract:<span>Existing GIS software mainly target at expert users and do not sufficiently integrate resources for efficient computing. They are difficult for non-experts to use and are often slow in completing the complicated geographic analysis. To address these problems, future generation of GIS software must be 'easy'. By 'easy' we mean 'easy to use' and 'easy to compute'. 'Easy to use' means that software system should be goal-oriented, rather than the currently procedure-oriented doctrine. The goal-oriented will relieve users, particularly novice users, the burden of knowing the exact commands and their sequences to perform for achieving the goal they want to achieve. 'Easy to compute' means that implementation of GIS analytical functionality should be able to utilize the high-performance computing infrastructures for complicated geographic analysis. Two case studies, one in digital soil mapping and the other in digital terrain analysis, are presented to illustrate the meaning of 'easy'. We believe that the future generations of GIS platforms should be goal-driven, intelligent, high-performance computing enabled, easily accessible, and participatory. It allows anyone to participate in geo-computation at anywhere and anytime.</span>

Abstract:Along with the forthcoming of Google Earth, Virtual Earth, the next generation of Internet, Web 2.0, grid computing and smart sensor web, comes the new era for geo-information. In this paper, main features of new geo-information era are discussed. This new era is characterized by these features: serviced users are extended from professionals to all public users, the users are data and information providers as well, geospatial data provided are no longer measurement-by-specification but measurement-on-demand through smart sensor web, and services are transferred from being data-driven to applicationdriven. Such problems as out-of-order issues in geographic data collection and information proliferation, quality issues in geographic information updating, security issues in geographic information services, privacy issues in sharing geographic information and property issues in sharing geographic information, which are brought about by new geo-information era, especially those confronted in geoinformation science and geo-spatial information industry, are analyzed. Then strategies concerning standards, planning, laws, technology and applications are proposed.

Abstract:With the rapid expansion and development of Internet and WWW (World Wide Web or Web), Web GIS (Web Geographical Information System) is becoming ever more popular and as a result numerous sites have added GIS capability on their Web sites. In this paper, the reasons behind developing a Web GIS instead of a “traditional” GIS are first outlined. Then the current status of Web GIS is reviewed, and their implementation methodologies are explored as well. The underlying technologies for developing Web GIS, such as Web Server, Web browser, CGI (Common Gateway Interface), Java, ActiveX, are discussed, and some typical implementation tools from both commercial and public domain are given as well. Finally, the future development direction of Web GIS is predicted.

Abstract:In the past few years, the Web has become a de facto deployment environment for new application systems. Web-based Geospatial image map systems make satellite remote sensing data available to a wider range of public users than ever before. The storage and organization of global massive multi-dimensional remote sensing data have a big impact on the performance of Web mapping systems. To implement a performance-optimized Web mapping system, we propose a global grid division pyramid hierarchical data model for massive remote sensing data management, and adopt Hilbert curve allocation method for data placements. Collaborative web map browsing is also very important for many applications such as crisis management, military activities and government decision-making. However, realizing collaboration functionality on the basis of the stateless HTTP protocol, optimized for client requests, is not trivial. The limitations of the Web's request/response architecture prevent server from pushing real-time dynamic Web data. To address this problem, we propose a web-based interactive collaborative browsing framework based on server push technique (Comet). Moreover, we develop a prototype system called ACTGIS. Finally, we evaluate the prototype system using real remote sensing datasets, which demonstrate the good performance data access in our system.

Abstract:In hazard management, earthquake researchers have utilized GIS to ease the process of managing disasters. Researchers use WebGIS to assess hazards and seismic risk. Although they can provide a visual analysis platform based on GIS technology, they lack a general description in the extensibility of WebGIS for processing dynamic data, especially real-time data. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for real-time 3D visual earthquake information publishing model based on WebGIS and digital globe to improve the ability of processing real-time data in systems based on WebGIS. On the basis of the model, we implement a real-time 3D earthquake information publishing system—EqMap3D. The system can not only publish real-time earthquake information but also display these data and their background geoscience information in a 3D scene. It provides a powerful tool for display, analysis, and decision-making for researchers and administrators. It also facilitates better communication between researchers engaged in geosciences and the interested public.

Abstract:With the appearance of Internet promotes GIS on both technical aspect and applied aspect,traditional GIS encounters huge blocks on Internet platform. In the field of computer ,Distributed Computing technology has seen fast progress with three industrial standards. And on GIS field,openGIS Consortium has drawn a series of specifications,which,combining with the three standards,provides enterprise GIS application with foundamental facilities. The authors firstly illustrate the architectures with three models-thin clent,medium client and thick client,then present a mixed model which transfers both vector and raster data between client side and server side with the advantage of high interactivity in clinet and medium data transfer. Afterward,the authors give two enterprise schema based on two standards :COM+and EJB. Finally,the authors list some key technologies which will affect the future WebGIS-openGIS,XML, Windows. net, CORBA, EJB,etc.

Abstract:The rapid development of the web geographic information system (Web GIS) has promoted new vitality in high school geography education, relieved the stress of geography teachers caused by software and technical problems, and made it possible for teachers to devote more energy to geography teaching and research activities. Natural disaster education is not only an important part of the geography curriculum, but also an indispensable aspect of education for sustainable development (ESD) for high school students. The application of Web GIS in the dynamic monitoring, forecast, and early warning of natural disasters is becoming more experienced. Therefore, the application of Web GIS in natural disaster education is quite feasible. How to build a bridge between them is the purpose of this paper. Thus, the paper selects ArcGIS Online, which is not limited by time and space, and analyzes several functions that apply it to geography teaching. These include smart mapping, story maps, 3D web maps, and mobile GIS. Meanwhile, it analyzes the knowledge structure of “natural disasters” in Chinese geography textbooks to guide the subsequent case design. Then, the Web GIS inquiry-based teaching case is formed based on “7.20 Zhengzhou Torrential Rain”. It contains knowledge about natural disasters and designs from many aspects, such as the causes, manifestations, and prevention and control of disasters. The discussion identifies a range of specific educational benefits of applying Web GIS to natural disaster education for teachers and schools. Ultimately, it can provide some reference values for geography teachers and other developers to explore curriculum resources and create quality educational models.

Abstract:Borderland regions are special areas and deserve more attention in global sustainable development. Reliable geo-information and effective analysis tools are requested to support borderlands studies through the integrated utilization of geospatial analysis, web service, as well as the other domain-specific expertise. This paper has reviewed the state-of-the-art of geospatial information sciences, (GIS)-based borderlands modeling, and understanding. From the perspective of GIS, integrated data modeling, comprehensive analysis, and collaborative information service are identified as the three major challenges in this filed. A research agenda is further proposed with four topics, i.e., classification and representation of borderland information, derivation of neighborhood information, development of synergetic analysis, and design and development of a geo-portal for borderlands studies. This interdisciplinary study requires a closer and in-depth collaboration of geopolitics, international relation, geography and geo-spatial information sciences.

Abstract:WEBGIS is a technology based on the Internet and GIS,it is more excellent than the general management information system (MIS)in the water resources information system,it provides distributive management,assessment, monitor and preservation to water resources and water environment. Integrating with database,GIS and professional management model of water resources,we can develop special MIS which is suitable for water resources management This article takes Yinzhou in Ningbo located in the east coastland of China as a study area,it makes an application of water resources management in medium and small river basins based On WEBGIS. The result indicates that it realizes some functions such as spatial information-query related to the synthetic management of water resources,and it can afford some experiential model to the Application of WEBGIS in the information system of water resources.
Design of a Framework for Multi-User/Application Oriented WebGIS Services

Abstract:In this paper, a framework is presented to provide a new mode for WebGIS services. This framework consists of three layers: User layer, Application layer and WebGIS service layer. User Layer supports users to access WebGIS services via different network environment; application layer represents WebGIS applications constructed by different organizations or companies, which integrate GIS services to solve some domain-oriented problems; WebGISservice layer is the core layer in the framework, which provides different GIS services. Professionals maintain WebGIS service layer unitedly. WebGIS services can dynamically modified and added, but WebGIS application needn't adjust. If there are no appropriate GIS services in WebGIS service layer, the WebGIS application constructors can order them from WebGIS service layer. WebGIS service layer is a multi-agent system, where WebGIS services are implemented as agents, which can match the use of different users/applications.

Abstract:With great volumes of geospatial data and data from different fields distributed across Internet, the sharing and utilization of these data have presented great challenges for research and application in geographical information science. Moreover, the new concepts and technologies of Web 2.0 represent new user demands for user-oriented interaction, and collaboration. There is an emerging need to provide users with an integrated tool for spatial exploration, and spatial analysis in supporting common advanced needs from multiple disciples of research and application. This paper introduced China geo-explorer - a new Web based platform with advanced functions for spatial data integration, data selection, data analysis, and data service for research, education and decision support as a joint effort by the China Data Center at the University of Michigan, Wuhan University and All China Marketing Research. It demonstrated how space-time data of different formats and sources can be integrated, visualized, and reported in a Web based system. Due to its flexibility in architecture, interoperability in data sharing, rich experience in user interaction, and deeper consideration in promoting spatial analysis, it was suitable for kinds of applications from various domains. Some case studies in disaster assessment, environment, health, and regional development as the application of the system were discussed.

Abstract:Geo-referenced data visualization is one of the most important components of geographic information systems. Over the past several years, geospatial data are growing much more in size and complexity than ever before, and researchers are engaged in doing a lot of works to visualize these diverse geospatial data by taking advantage of computer graphics which helps to convey information and amplify cognition and makes possible for more powerful participating exploration and discovery experience. This paper will discuss the related works on visualization for GIS. The first chapter of this paper is an introduction which will present an overview. In the second chapter, we will talk about the geo-virtual environment which closely related to the virtual reality concept. We will focus on representation of urban models. terrain rendering algorithms, and the problems we currently face. For the third part, we will talk about two young but promising fields, which are scientific visualization and information visualization. The brief history and the research issues of these two disciplines will be the main topic. Finally, we will make a outlook on the future works about human-computer interaction, and hardware acceleration.

Abstract:WebGIS is the integration of Internet and GIS,and it is a realization of GIS on Web.Using WebGIS,people could browse the spacial data and the special map while analyze the spacial data on Web with the browser(such as IE and Netscape).Today,the technology development of WebGIS is speedy in the world.There are many framework for WebGIS,such as ArcIMS of ESRI,MapXtreme,MapInfo or MapGuide of AutoDesk and some national manufactures(SuperMap IS,Geobeans and Geosurf).There are also some successful Web Stations,for example Map of World、Science of NuoPan、Golden Coordinate、MapABC and so on.There are differences between them in function.This paper expounds the whole process of WebGIS,which is using the Map Web Service of ArcIMS,the spatial Engine of ArcSDE,the technology of ArcObject and javascript in the Web Station of www.landjs.com.
