Abstract:Consider a planar Brownian motion run for finite time. Thefrontieror “outer boundary” of the path is the boundary of the unbounded component of the complement. K. Burdzy (Prob. Theory Related Field83(1989), 135–205) showed that the frontier has infinite length. We improve this by showing that the Hausdorff dimension of the frontier is strictly greater than 1. (It has been conjectured that the Brownian frontier has dimension 4/3, but this is still open.) The proof uses Jones's Traveling Salesman Theorem and a self-similar tiling of the plane by fractal tiles known as Gosper Islands.

Abstract:Consider the boundary $\partial \mathbb D$ of the Brownian disk $\mathbb D$ as a metric space by endowing it with the (restriction of the) metric of $\mathbb D$. We show that the uniform measure on $\partial \mathbb D$ coincides with the Hausdorff measure associated with the gauge function $h(s)=\kappa s^2\log\log(1/s)$ for some deterministic constant $\kappa>0$. We also state the analogous result for the boundary of the Brownian half-plane $\mathbb H$. This proves in particular that the uniform measure on the boundary of the Brownian disk (resp. the Brownian half-plane) is determined by the metric on $\mathbb D$ (resp. on $\mathbb H$).

Abstract:We review the motivation and fundamental properties of the Hausdorff dimension of metric spaces and illustrate this with a number of examples, some of which are expected and well-known. We also give examples where the Hausdorff dimension has some surprising properties: we construct a set $E\subset\C$ of positive planar measure and with dimension 2 such that each point in $E$ can be joined to $\infty$ by one or several curves in $\C$ such that all curves are disjoint from each other and from $E$, and so that their union has Hausdorff dimension 1. We can even arrange things so that every point in $\C$ which is not on one of these curves is in $E$. These examples have been discovered very recently; they arise quite naturally in the context of complex dynamics, more precisely in the iteration theory of simple maps such as $z\mapsto \pi\sin(z)$.

Abstract:This paper extends some results of Mattila (J. Fractal Geom. 66 (2021) 389–401 and Ann. Acad. Sci. Fenn. A Math. 42 (2017) 611–620), in particular, removing assumptions of positive lower density. We give conditions on a general family Pλ:Rn→Rm,λ∈Λ , of orthogonal projections which guarantee that the Hausdorff dimension formula dimA∩Pλ−1{u}=s−m holds generically for measurable sets A⊂Rn with positive and finite s ‐dimensional Hausdorff measure, s>m . As an application we prove for Borel sets A,B⊂Rn with positive s ‐ and t-dimensional measures that if s+(n−1)t/n>n , then dimA∩(g(B)+z)⩾s+t−n for almost all rotations g and for positively many z∈Rn . We shall also give an application to the estimates of the dimension of the set of exceptional rotations.

Abstract:The passage of Brownian motion through a bottleneck in a bounded domain is a rare event and the mean time for such passage increases indefinitely as the bottleneck's radius shrinks to zero. Its calculation reveals the effect of geometry and smoothness on the flux through the bottleneck. We find new behavior of the narrow escape time through bottlenecks in planar and spatial domains and on a surface. Some applications are discussed.

Abstract:In this article we aim to investigate the Hausdorff dimension of the set of points $x \in [0,1)$ such that for any $r\in\mathbb{N},$ \begin{align*} a_{n+1}(x)a_{n+2}(x)\cdots a_{n+r}(x)\geq e^{\tau(x)(h(x)+\cdots+h(T^{n-1}(x)))} {align*} holds for infinitely many $n\in\mathbb{N},$ where $h$ and $\tau$ are positive continuous functions, $T$ is the Gauss map and $a_n(x)$ denote the $n$th partial quotient of $x$ in its continued fraction expansion. By appropriate choices of $r$, $\tau(x)$ snd $h(x)$ we obtain the classical Jarník-Besicovitch Theorem as well as more recent results by Wang-Wu-Xu, Wang-Wu, Huang-Wu-Xu and Hussain-Kleinbock-Wadleigh-Wang.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the fractional dimensions of some sets of points with their partial quotients obeying some restrictions in their continued fraction expansions. The Hausdorff dimension of the following set, which shares a dichotomy law according to Borel–Bernstein's theorem, is completely determinedE(ϕ)={x∈[0,1):an(x)⩾ϕ(n), i.o. n}. Our result significantly strengthens the results of Good and Lúczak.

Abstract:We show that the occupation measure of planar Brownian motion exhibits a constant height gap of $5/\pi$ across its outer boundary. This property bears similarities with the celebrated results of Schramm--Sheffield [18] and Miller--Sheffield [12] concerning the height gap of the Gaussian free field across SLE$_4$/CLE$_4$ curves. Heuristically, our result can also be thought of as the $\theta \to 0^+$ limit of the height gap property of a field built out of a Brownian loop soup with subcritical intensity $\theta>0$, proved in our recent paper [3]. To obtain the explicit value of the height gap, we rely on the computation by Garban and Trujillo Ferreras [1] of the expected area of the domain delimited by the outer boundary of a Brownian bridge.

Abstract:We introduce a new family of fractal dimensions by restricting the set of diameters in the coverings in the usual definition of the Hausdorff dimension. Among others, we prove that this family contains continuum many distinct dimensions, and they share most of the properties of the Hausdorff dimension, which answers negatively a question of Fraser. On the other hand, we also prove that among these new dimensions only the Hausdorff dimension behaves nicely with respect to Hölder functions, which supports a conjecture posed by Banaji obtained as a natural modification of Fraser's question. We also consider the supremum of these new dimensions, which turns out to be an other interesting notion of fractal dimension. We prove that among those bilipschitz invariant, monotone dimensions on the compact subsets of $\mathbb{R}^n$ that agree with the similarity dimension for the simplest self-similar sets, the modified lower dimension is the smallest and when $n=1$ the Assouad dimension is the greatest, and this latter statement is false for $n>1$. This answers a question of Rutar.

Abstract:We consider systems of multiple Brownian particles in one dimension that repel mutually via a logarithmic potential on the real line, more specifically the Dyson model. These systems are characterized by a parameter that controls the strength of the interaction, k > 0. Despite being a one-dimensional system, this system is interesting due to the properties that arise from the long-range interaction between particles. It is a well-known fact that when k is small enough, particle collisions occur almost surely, while when k is large, collisions never occur. However, aside from this fact, there was no characterization of the collision times until now. In this paper, we derive the fractal (Hausdorff) dimension of the set of collision times by generalizing techniques introduced by L. Liu and Y. Xiao [Probab. Math. Stat. 18(2), 369–383 (1998)] to study the return times to the origin of self-similar Markov processes. In our case, we consider the return times to configurations where at least one collision occurs, which is a condition that defines unbounded sets as opposed to a single point, namely, the origin. We find that the fractal dimension characterizes the collision behavior of these systems and establishes a clear delimitation between the colliding and non-colliding regions in a way similar to that of a thermodynamic function.

Abstract:A classification for Brownian motions on metric graphs, that is, right continuous strong Markov processes which behave like a one-dimensional Brownian motion on the edges and feature effects like Walsh skewness, stickiness and jumps at the vertices, is obtained. The Feller property of these processes is proved, and the boundary conditions of their generators are identified as non-local Feller-Wentzell boundary conditions. By using a technique of successive revivals, a complete description of the generator is achieved for Brownian motions on star graphs.
