Abstract:We give a brief history of Catalan numbers, from their first discovery in the 18th century to modern times. This note will appear as an appendix in Richard Stanley's forthcoming book on Catalan numbers.

Abstract:The paper describes a prime factorization of the Catalan numbers. Odd prime factors are distributed in layers in accordance with Legendre's formula. The content of each layer is a network of the intervals, Chebyshev's Segments. The primes of Segment are not calculated and are selected on the basis of its bounds. Layers contain non-repeated primes. Repeated factors are formed when primes are duplicated among different layers. The paper slightly modifies Kummer's theorem for the selection of individual prime factors, also starting from the boundaries of Segments. In conclusion, the reader is offered a software service for factorization of the Catalan number with index up to $10^8$

Abstract:We introduce the super Patalan numbers, a generalization of the super Catalan numbers in the sense of Gessel, and prove a number of properties analagous to those of the super Catalan numbers. The super Patalan numbers generalize the super Catalan numbers similarly to how the Patalan numbers generalize the Catalan numbers.

Multiparameter Fuss--Catalan numbers with application to algebraic equations

Abstract:We present an exposition on the Fuss--Catalan numbers, which are a generalization of the well known Catalan numbers. The literature on the subject is scattered (especially for the case of multiple independent parameters, as will be explained in the text), with overlapping definitions by different authors and duplication of proofs. This paper collects the main theorems and identities, with a consistent notation. Contact is made with the works of numerous authors, including the early works of Lambert and Euler. We demonstrate the application of the formalism to solve algebraic equations by infinite series. Our main result in this context is a new necessary and sufficient formula for the domain of absolute convergence of the series solutions of algebraic equations, which corrects and extends previous work in the field. Some historical material is placed in an Appendix.

Abstract:We define a new generalization of Catalan numbers to multinomial coefficients. With arithmetic methods, we study their integrality and the integrality of their Lucasnomial generalization. We give a complete characterization of regular Lucas sequences for which they yield integers up to finitely many cases.

Abstract:Let $W^c(A_n)$ be the set of fully commutative elements in the $A_n$-type Coxeter group. Using only the settings of their canonical form, we recount $W^c(A_n)$ by the recurrence that is taken as a definition of the Catalan number $C_{n+1}$ and we find the Narayana numbers as well as the Catalan triangle via suitable set partitions of $W^c(A_n)$. We determine the unique bijection between $W^c(A_n)$ and the set of non-crossing diagrams of $n+1$ strings that respects the diagrammatic multiplication by concatenation in the $A_n$-type Temperley-Lieb algebra, along with the two algorithms implementing this bijection and its inverse.

Abstract:We provide a context around a conjectured closed form for the Hankel transform of linear combinations of consecutive pairs of Catalan numbers. This generalizes the formula for the Hankel transforms of the shifted Catalan numbers and the known results for linear combinations of pairs of Catalan numbers. Many interesting number triangles emerge, some of which we analyze using the language of Riordan arrays.

Abstract:In this note, we provide a bijection between a new collection of words on nonnegative integers of length n and Dyck paths of length 2n-2, thus proving that this collection belongs to the Catalan family. The surprising key step in this bijection is the zeta map which is an important map in the study of q,t-Catalan numbers. Finally we discuss an alternative approach to this new collection of words using two statistics on planted trees that turn out to be closely related to the Tutte polynomial on the Catalan matroid.

Abstract:We present a parametric family of Riordan arrays which are obtained by multiplying any Riordan array with a generalized Pascal array. In particular, we focus on some interesting properties of one-parameter Catalan triangles. We obtain several combinatorial identities that involve two special Catalan matrices, the Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind, some periodic sequences, and the Fibonacci numbers.

Abstract:This note is about the observation that the various transition formulas between bases of trigonometric polynomials can be expressed in terms binomial coefficients. More specifically, we write the entries of the Chebyshev matrices $ T$ and $ U$ in terms of binomial coefficients. We remark that the inverses of certain submatrices of the Chebyshev matrix $ T$ correspond to classical power reduction formulas for trigonometric functions. Therefore the entries of $ T^{-1}$ are expressible in terms of binomial coefficients and powers of two. The inverses of certain submatrices of the Chebyshev matrix $ U$ appear in power reduction formulas involving the Catalan triangles. We could not spot them in the literature. As a corollary the Catalan triangles are interpreted as inverses of rather natural matrices of binomial coefficients. We explain the matrix inversions in terms of Riordan arrays. We solve the integral $ \int _{0}^{2\pi }\cos^{2m}( x)\sin^{2n}( x) dx$ and deduce a hypergeometric identity from the Fourier expansion of $\cos^{2m}(x)$ and $ \sin^{2n}( x)$. As a corollary we prove that super Catalan numbers are integers. We emphasize that from the point of view of these base changes between the trigonometric polynomials it is more natural to work with $2\cos(x)$ and $2\sin(x)$ instead of $\cos(x)$ and $\sin(x)$, since the transition matrices become invertible over the integers. We do a similar analysis for the spread polynomials. This enables us to make a conjecture of Goh and Wildberger more precise. In this exposition we give a mostly self-contained account of the matter, the prerequisites just being four semesters of calculus, linear algebra, elementary complex variables and the residue theorem.

Abstract:By prepending zeros to a given sequence Hankel determinants of backward shifts of this sequence become meaningful. We obtain some results for the sequences of Catalan numbers and of some numbers and polynomials which are related to Catalan numbers and propose conjectures for sequences of convolution powers of Catalan numbers.

Abstract:In this paper, we chronologically recount several situations that have contributed to the development and formalization of the objects known as imaginary or complex numbers. We will begin by introducing the earliest documented knowing for calculating the square root of a negative quantity, attributed to the Greek mathematician Heron of Alexandria. From there, we will progress through history to explore the formal concept of complex numbers given by William Rowan Hamilton.

Abstract:We show that the Schubert polynomial S_w specializes to the Catalan number C_n when $w=1(n+1)...2$. Several proofs of this result as well as a q-analog are given. An application to the singularities of Schubert varieties is given.

Abstract:In this note we introduce several instructive examples of bijections found between several different combinatorially defined sequences of sets. Each sequence has cardinalities given by the Catalan numbers. Our results answer some questions posed by R. Stanley in the addendum to his textbook. We actually discuss two types of bijection, one defined recursively and the other defined in a more local, relative, fashion. It is interesting to compare the results of the two.
