Abstract:The patterns of richness, diversity, and abundance of an odonate assemblage from San Buenaventura, Jalisco are presented here. A total of 1087 specimens from seven families, 35 genera and 66 species were obtained through monthly samplings of five days each during a period of one year. Libellulidae was the most diverse family (28 species), followed by Coenagrionidae (21), Gomphidae (7), Aeshnidae (6), Calopterygidae (2), Lestidae (1) and Platystictidae (1). Argia was the most speciose genus. The highest species richness and Shannon diversity were found during August and September, whereas the highest abundance was observed in June and the highest Simpson diversity was recorded in September — all of which were associated with the rainy season. The highest values of phylogenetic diversity were found from June to October. The different diversity facets of this assemblage were positively correlated with precipitation and minimum temperature, whereas maximum temperature showed no influence. In addition, we found that this odonate diversity was higher than most Mexican localities with tropical dry forest (TDF) studied. We continue our efforts to describe the patterns of richness, diversity and abundance of some insect groups associated with the tropical dry forest ecosystem in Mexico, following a latitudinal gradient of the distribution of this ecosystem in the country. Our emphasis here was to evaluate the spatial and temporal patterns of richness and diversity of an Odonata assemblage from Jalisco, Mexico.

Influence of biotic and abiotic factors on adult Odonata (Insecta) in Amazon streams

Abstract:Abstract Abiotic and biotic factors play an essential role in the structuring of natural communities. Aquatic ecosystems have complex interaction networks, encompassing predator/prey relationships and structural support. Among aquatic organisms, the order Odonata is a model group for understanding those relationships since they can be both predators and prey. Our hypotheses were that Zygoptera are (i) influenced positively by Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera (EPT) and the Habitat Integrity Index (HII), and negatively by fish and macrophytes; and (ii) Anisoptera are affected positively by EPT and macrophytes, and negatively by fish and HII. We found that Zygoptera were affected by the fish functional trophic groups, while Anisoptera were affected by macrophytes, EPT, fish and HII. Macrophytes affected anisopterans positively because they provide perching sites for adults. The results for EPT and HII may be related since these organisms are also sensitive to environmental changes. More open areas have lower HII values and the negative relationship with Anisoptera may be explained by physiological constraints. The negative relationship between EPT and Anisoptera could be explained by the low occurrence of EPT in open sites, which are the sites that were highly rich in Anisoptera. Finally, the dominance of specific functional trophic groups of fish influences Odonata suborders in different ways. In conclusion, the results show the importance of ecological interactions for Odonata in Amazonian streams in both direct and indirect ways.

Abstract:Environmental and spatial variables can act as filters in species distribution, thereby structuring biological communities. Our study aims to analyze the effects of environmental and spatial factors on the structuring of Odonata assemblages in Cerrado. Testing the hypotheses: (1) the structuring of Odonata larvae and adult assemblages is more influenced by the environment than by space; and (2) the structuring of larvae and adult assemblages of the suborder Anisoptera is more influenced by the environment, while Zygoptera is more influenced by space. We measured physicochemical variables (dissolved oxygen, pH, conductivity and temperature) and Habitat Integrity Index. Data analysis involved the coverage-based rarefaction and extrapolation method, Partial Redundancy Analysis (RDAp), and Principal Coordinates of Neighbor Matrices. Thirteen streams were sampled, collecting 1204 specimens. The sampling effort for larvae showed an efficiency of 98 %, and for adults, 85 %. According to RDAp, the composition for larvae was explained solely by environmental factors, while for adults, there was an explanation by the environment for Anisoptera and by both environmental and spatial factors for the order and Zygoptera. The results highlight the joint influence of environmental and spatial factors on the configuration of adult and larval Odonata assemblages in Cerrado streams. A variety of responses, each corresponding to the specific object of analysis, is evident, driven by divergent eco-physiological characteristics among suborders. These nuances reflect the inherent complexity of the ecology of these aquatic insects, emphasizing the importance of considering both environmental and spatial factors when investigating the dynamics of Odonata communities at different developmental stages.

Dark diversity of Odonata in Amazonian streams

Abstract:The biological diversity of a region may not be fully sampled due to the low abundance or rarity of species, or the absence of species determined by their niche specificity. Investigating these species is essential for understanding the unrealized ecological potential in different habitats, identifying gaps in local and regional communities, and gaining a better understanding of the impacts of environmental changes. Therefore, to expand knowledge about the diversity of Odonata in Eastern Amazonia considering the absent species, we tested the hypotheses that: 1) Environmental variables will influence dark diversity, with greater explanation by canopy cover where sites with lower canopy cover will have higher dark diversity values, and; 2) Functional traits associated with better species dispersal will be correlated with low dark diversity of Odonata, such as larger and wider wings for example. For this, adult Odonata specimens were sampled, while structural habitat characteristics and physical and chemical water variables were measured in 128 first- to third-order streams in the Eastern Amazon. Morphological and behavioral data were recorded for each specimen. Generalized linear models were applied to predict the effects of habitat structural characteristics and physical and chemical water variables on the dark diversity of Odonata. Additionally, we assessed which functional traits contribute most to the variation of dark diversity within these communities. Habitat structural features and physical and chemical water variables had no effect on dark diversity. Morphological traits, such as body conformation, with species having narrower wings, longer hind wings, narrower thoraxes, and shorter abdomens, comprised most of the dark diversity. The dispersal limitations of some Odonata species strongly suggest the role of space and time in nature planning and management.

Abstract:The evaluation of environmental and spatial influence in freshwater systems is crucial for the conservation of aquatic diversity. So, we evaluated communities of Odonata in streams inside and outside sustainable use areas in the Brazilian western Amazon. We predicted that these streams would differ regarding habitat integrity and species α and β diversity. We also predict that environmental and spatial variables will be important for both suborders, but with more substantial effects on Zygoptera species, considering their nature of forest-specialist. The study was conducted in 35 streams, 19 inside and 16 outside sustainable use areas. The streams outside presented high species richness, abundance, and number of exclusive forest-specialist species from Zygoptera and higher scores of habitat integrity. In contrast, one sustainable use area presented the lowest values of these metrics. Besides, we found that environmental and spatial variables were significantly associated to Zygoptera species composition, but not with Anisoptera, which can be explained by their cosmopolitan nature. Our results indicated that an interplay between environmental and spatial processes determines the structure of the metacommunities of Zygoptera. The less effective dispersal rates and narrow ecological tolerance of Zygoptera species make them more influenced by local conditions and dispersal limitation, and more sensible to habitat modifications. We highlight the importance of improving the local management of the sustainable use areas by environmental agencies, mainly on areas that are losing their capacity to maintain the aquatic fauna, and implementation of social policies toward traditional people.

Abstract:Incorporating insects into ecotourism activities increases awareness of their importance in ecosystems. However, the inclusion of this group in ecotourism activities is still rare. In this context, we identified the perception of indigenous and non-indigenous leaders and residents about the potential of Odonata (dragonflies and damselflies) as key organisms for promoting community-based ecotourism (CBET) in the Tapajós-Arapiuns Extractive Reserve, Brazilian Amazon. We designed a semi-structured questionnaire and conducted interviews with 415 indigenous and non-indigenous residents (222 women and 193 men) from 73 communities and villages. When shown images of dragonflies (Anisoptera and Zygoptera), 98.55 % of respondents recognized them, predominantly identifying them as "jacinas" (55.11 %). Respondents noted differences between Anisoptera and Zygoptera based on body color and size, identified them as part of the insect group (45.78 %), and associated their habitat with forests and jungles (57.34 %). Most participants (96.38 %) indicated that current ecotourism activities do not include information about invertebrates, emphasizing the need for greater understanding of their biology and ecological significance (44.64 %), and management (29.16 %). They stated that seeing (99.52 %) and observing (99.04 %) dragonflies could attract tourists due to their striking appearance (57.10 %) and beautiful (39.03 %). Most respondents recognized the importance of dragonflies for the environment (99.52 %), culture (63.13 %), and economy (55.66 %), acknowledging their potential to generate income through tourism. Additionally, 89.88 % expressed a desire to participate in the development of ecotourism activities involving Odonata. The results reflect the enormous potential of dragonflies to be included as key organisms in the development of CBET, allowing for environmental awareness, biodiversity conservation, cultural appreciation, and income generation for local communities. Furthermore, the study highlights the need to implement educational and training programs on Odonata, along with the development and funding of public policies to ensure the success and sustainability of such initiatives.

Abstract:Aim Insects are one of the least studied taxa, with most species lacking basic ecological and biogeographical information. This problem is particularly acute in the tropics, where low sampling effort hampers accurate estimates of species richness at scale and potentially confounds efforts to identify the drivers of biogeographical gradients. Here, we evaluate the quality of the data on the distribution and diversity of odonate species in the Neotropics, while also examining the influence of sampling completeness on climate–richness relationships using a comprehensive database of odonates. Location The Neotropics. Taxon Odonata. Methods Using 56,535 records collected from 1970 to 2021, we assess whether climate–species richness models vary under different scenarios of survey completeness. Results Our survey compilation revealed that most Neotropical diversity of Odonata likely remains unknown. Only 1% of the one‐degree cells covering the Neotropics held reliable information on odonate species richness, with particularly severe gaps in the Caribbean, Central America, northeastern Brazil and northern Chile. Temperature, precipitation and potential evapotranspiration exert consistent effects on Odonata richness across the entire Neotropics, regardless the level of survey completeness. Whereas seasonality‐related variables are less important predictors of species richness at the biogeographical scale. Main Conclusions By highlighting areas where inventories are more reliable and identifying regions that require increased data collection efforts and mobilization, our assessment offers a roadmap for improving the reliability of odonate inventories in the Neotropics. Furthermore, our findings underscore the importance of accounting for varying levels of survey completeness in macroecological models to reveal robust climate–species richness relationships. Simultaneously, they highlight strong climatic predictors of species richness, irrespective of survey effort intensity. These predictors provide a solid foundation for modelling and predicting odonate species richness in the Neotropics.

Abstract:Abstract Aim We aim to define the hotspots, faunal regions and faunal elements of O donata in E urasia. We describe the location and the extent of the transition zone between the P alaearctic and O riental realms. Location E urasia. Methods Odonata are suitable for this study because the number of species in the group is sufficient for the required analyses, their distributions are mostly known, and they are split into the highly dispersive A nisoptera and the weakly dispersive Z ygoptera. For our analyses, E urasia was classified into 63 regions, within which we determined the presence or absence of each of the 1765 O donata species. We calculated species richness maps and performed cluster analysis and principal components analysis to extract faunal regions and elements. Results Occurrence records of E urasian O donata were partitioned among three major biogeographical entities: (1) E urope, N orth A frica and N orth A sia; (2) I ndia, I ndochina and southern C hina; and (3) northern C hina, K orea and J apan. Each of these entities has further notable substructures and faunal elements, especially in Southeast A sia. The tropical rain forest region of Southeast A sia is the species diversity hotspot of odonates and has the highest number of (often localized) faunal elements. The northern border of the Oriental region reaches southernmost C hina and the southern slopes of the H imalayas, but the transitional zone between the Oriental and the P alaearctic region extends much farther north, and includes northern China, Japan and Manchuria. The lower dispersal ability of Z ygoptera compared with that of A nisoptera is mirrored in various biogeographical patterns: (1) the Western P alaearctic influence on the Eastern P alaearctic is stronger in A nisoptera than in Z ygoptera; (2) Z ygoptera have more faunal elements on islands than do A nisoptera; and (3) Z ygoptera are isolated by the Strait of G ibraltar, but do not show a finer‐grained structure of their faunal elements on the mainland. Main conclusions The less severe impact of the ice ages in Southeast A sia resulted in the evolution and survival of O donata species in many regional refugia. These faunal elements have had a greater impact on the post‐glacial colonization than previously thought and strongly influence the composition of O donata in East A sia.

A Review of the Density, Biomass, and Secondary Production of Odonates

Abstract:Freshwater insects are highly significant as ecosystem service providers, contributing to provisioning services, supporting services, and cultural services. Odonates are dominant predators in many freshwater systems, becoming top predators in fishless ecosystems. One service that odonates provide is the export of matter and energy from aquatic to terrestrial ecosystems. In this study, we provide a review of the literature aiming to estimate the density, biomass, and secondary production of odonates and discuss to what extent this order of insects is relevant for the fertilization of terrestrial ecosystems. We found published data on 109 species belonging to 17 families of odonates from 44 papers. Odonata larvae are abundant in freshwater systems, with a mean density of 240.04 ± 48.01 individuals m-2 (±SE). Lentic habitats show much higher densities (104.40 ± 55.31 individuals m-2, N = 118) than lotic systems (27.12 ± 5.09, N = 70). The biomass estimations for odonates indicate values of 488.56 ± 134.51 mg m-2 y-1, with similar values in lentic and lotic habitats, which correspond to annual secondary productions of 3558.02 ± 2146.80 mg m-2 y-1. The highest biomass is found in dragonflies of the Aeshnidae, Corduliidae, and Gomphidae families. The available evidence suggests a significant potential contribution of Odonata to the exportation of material from water bodies to land. This is further strengthened by the ability of adult odonates to migrate and to colonize different types of water bodies.
Environmental DNA vs. Community Science: Strengths and Limitations for Urban Odonata Surveys

Abstract:The study of insect decline remains a major frontier in the study of insect biodiversity and conservation. Despite growing concern about the decline rates of insects generally, relatively little data has been compiled about species of aquatic insects. Data is particularly lacking on the distribution of aquatic insects in urban ecosystems. Here, we compare environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding and community science observation as means of monitoring Odonata in an urban habitat in Southwest Idaho. We show that the distribution of Odonata across this urban landscape is not uniform and that both monitoring methods have different strengths and weaknesses. We found that eDNA metabarcoding was very sensitive to the identification of genera from underrepresented families in the region, but was unable to distinguish between closely related genera, particularly from localities where eDNA could accumulate more data. On the other hand, community science observations effectively identified the presence of genera from more speciose families but missed the presence of relatively rare species, and those that had a short flight season. These findings suggest that eDNA and community science are highly complementary of each other, but if only one method is going to be used for a monitoring or conservation project, care should be given to account for the biases of each approach.

Tropical Origin, Global Diversification and Dispersal in the Pond Damselflies (Coenagrionoidea) Revealed by a New Molecular Phylogeny

Abstract:The processes responsible for the formation of Earth's most conspicuous diversity pattern, the latitudinal diversity gradient (LDG), remain unexplored for many clades in the Tree of Life. Here, we present a densely-sampled and dated molecular phylogeny for the most speciose clade of damselflies worldwide (Odonata: Coenagrionoidea), and investigate the role of time, macroevolutionary processes and biome-shift dynamics in shaping the LDG in this ancient insect superfamily. We used process-based biogeographic models to jointly infer ancestral ranges and speciation times, and to characterise within-biome dispersal and biome-shift dynamics across the cosmopolitan distribution of Coenagrionoidea. We also investigated temporal and biome-dependent variation in diversification rates. Our results uncover a tropical origin of pond damselflies and featherlegs ~ 105 Ma, while highlighting uncertainty of ancestral ranges within the tropics in deep time. Even though diversification rates have declined since the origin of this clade, global climate change and biome-shifts have slowly increased diversity in warm- and cold-temperate areas, where lineage turnover rates have been relatively higher. This study underscores the importance of biogeographic origin and time to diversify as important drivers of the LDG in pond damselflies and their relatives, while diversification dynamics have instead resulted in the formation of ephemeral species in temperate regions. Biome-shifts, although limited by tropical niche conservatism, have been the main factor reducing the steepness of the LDG in the last 30 Myr. With ongoing climate change and increasing northward range expansions of many damselfly taxa, the LDG may become less pronounced. Our results support recent calls to unify biogeographic and macroevolutionary approaches to increase our understanding of how latitudinal diversity gradients are formed and why they vary across time and among taxa.

Data gap or biodiversity gap? Evaluating apparent spatial biases in community science observations of Odonata in the east-central United States

Abstract:Odonates (dragonflies and damselflies) have become popular study organisms for insect-based climate studies, due to the taxon's strong sensitivity to environmental conditions, and an enthusiastic following by community scientists due to their charismatic appearance and size. Where formal records of this taxon can be limited, public efforts have provided nearly 1,500,000 open-sourced odonate records through online databases, making real-time spatio-temporal monitoring more feasible. While these databases can be extensive, concerns regarding these public endeavors have arisen from a variety of sources: records may be biased by human factors (ex: density, technological access) which may cause erroneous interpretations. Indeed, records of odonates in the east-central US documented in the popular database iNaturalist bear striking patterns corresponding to political boundaries and other human activities. We conducted a 'ground-truthing' study using a structured sampling method to examine these patterns in an area where community science reports indicated variable abundance, richness, and diversity which appeared to be linked to observation biases. Our observations were largely consistent with patterns recorded by community scientists, suggesting these databases were indeed capturing representative biological trends and raising further questions about environmental drivers in the observed data gaps.

Abstract:Dragonflies and damselflies are among the earliest flying insects with extant representatives. However, unraveling details of their long evolutionary history, such as egg laying (oviposition) strategies, is impeded by unresolved phylogenetic relationships, particularly in damselflies. Here we present a transcriptome-based phylogenetic reconstruction of Odonata, analyzing 2,980 protein-coding genes in 105 species representing nearly all the order's families. All damselfly and most dragonfly families are recovered as monophyletic. Our data suggest a sister relationship between dragonfly families of Gomphidae and Petaluridae. According to our divergence time estimates, both crown-Zygoptera and -Anisoptera arose during the late Triassic. Egg-laying with a reduced ovipositor apparently evolved in dragonflies during the late Jurassic/early Cretaceous. Lastly, we also test the impact of fossil choice and placement, particularly, of the extinct fossil species, †Triassolestodes asiaticus, and †Proterogomphus renateae on divergence time estimates. We find placement of †Proterogomphus renateae to be much more impactful than †Triassolestodes asiaticus.

Abstract:Gene family expansions play a key role in shaping patterns of biodiversity across the tree of life. In Insecta, expanded gene families have broadly been tied to diet, pesticide resistance, immune response and survival in extreme environments. Patterns of gene family evolution are of particular interest in Odonata (dragonflies and damselflies), which are the first lineage to fly, and are one of the most exceptional predators. In Odonata, expansions of opsin genes are correlated with the diversification of the herbivorous insects that Odonata prey upon, but general trends in gene family expansion and contraction have not been studied in this order. Here, we show that two families of Anisoptera (dragonflies), Libellulidae and Petaluridae, have expanded gene families related to their unique life history and diversification patterns. Libellulidae share expanded gene families related to immune response, desiccation response, and processing free radicals, which are all related to the success of Libellulidae in low quality water bodies. The Petaluridae have expanded gene families involved in sensory perception, which can be tied to the unique semi-terrestrial lifestyle of the nymphs of this family. Furthermore, Odonata as a whole has a remarkably high (λ=.19) level of gene turnover compared to other insect orders, a phenomenon that will merit further exploration. These results are an important step towards understanding why Libellulidae is, generally, a species rich family of short lived species that are highly tolerant to poor water quality, while Petaluridae is a species poor family of habitat and behavioral specialists.

Thorax temperature and niche characteristics as predictors of abundance of Amazonian Odonata

Abstract:Environmental architecture and body temperature drive the distribution of ectothermic species, especially those with specific ecophysiological requirements or narrow ecological niches. In this study, we evaluated the connection between thorax temperature and niche specialization concerning the abundance and species contribution to the beta diversity of adult Odonata in Amazonian streams, employing the Species Contribution to Beta Diversity (SCBD). Our hypotheses were (i) Odonata species’ thorax temperature is positively correlated with both morphology (thorax width) and air temperature, and (ii) the thorax temperature of the Odonata assemblage serves as a more influential predictor than niche specialization in determining species abundance and SCBD. We sampled 46 streams in an anthropized landscape in the Northeastern and Southeastern regions of Pará state, Brazil. Notably, niche breadth emerged as the variable influencing the abundance and SCBD of the Odonata assemblage. Niche position is a predictor for Odonata SCBD and not suborders, and predictor for abundance, except for Anisoptera. Both suborders exhibited a negative relationship between abundance and thoracic temperature. In summary, our results underscore the necessity of considering both niche and ecophysiological predictors to comprehensively assess the Odonata assemblage in Amazonian streams. This holistic approach has implications for conservation efforts and bioassessment practices, offering valuable insights into the collective response of Odonata as a group.

Abstract:Abstract Anthropogenic activities highly threaten neotropical freshwater habitats. Aquatic insects are sensitive to environmental alterations and thus considered under great risk due to such pressures. However, large‐scale gaps regarding the knowledge of the distribution of aquatic insect species remain in the Neotropics, particularly in the South American temperate grasslands (Pampas), hindering the knowledge of hotspots of aquatic insect diversity and the prioritization of conservation areas destined to protect their populations. Here, we review the current knowledge regarding the geographical distribution of Odonata species and use ecological niche models to estimate the areas with the highest potential richness of Odonata species in the Pampas. We also calculate a sampling effort index and interpolate it with maps of protected areas to identify the spatial knowledge gaps regarding their conservation in the region Our compilation of Odonata species records retrieved 237 species for the Pampa. However, Odonata species were recorded in less than 2% of the Pampa. Our findings indicated a higher potential diversity of Odonata in northeastern Argentina, southern Uruguay and southern Brazil. Interpolations of sampling effort index and protected areas showed that 95% of the area potentially rich in Odonata species fall outside protected areas. Our study highlights the shortfall regarding the knowledge of the distribution of Odonata diversity in non‐forest landscapes of the Neotropical region. It also shows that protected areas of the Pampa cover a minor area of the Odonata species range in the region.
