Abstract:We have prepared Cu2Se + x wt% CB4 composites with x = 0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, and 0.7 by a hydrothermal method and hot-pressing technique. The structural and compositional analysis indicates that pure phase Cu2Se powders were synthesized and the densified layered bulk samples were obtained. Electrical properties testing showed that the sample with x = 0.5 has the high power factor of 0.886 mW m-1 K-2 due to its high Seebeck coefficient. Meanwhile, the thermal conductivity was suppressed to 0.6 W m-1 K-1 at 773 K. As a result, the final optimized ZT value of 1.46 at 773 K was achieved. These results suggest that CB4 could be an alternative inclusion to improve effectively the thermoelectric performance of Cu2Se.

Abstract:In this study, large-scale synthesis of Cu3SbSe4 and Cu3Sb0.98Sn0.02Se4 nanoparticles with a narrow size distribution was achieved through a rapid-injection route. These nanoparticles showed a monodisperse and quasi-spherical morphology. The Cu3SbSe4 and Cu3Sb0.98Sn0.02Se4 nanoparticle-based bulk materials were then prepared by hot-pressed sinter of the nanoparticles, and their thermoelectric performances were systematically studied. Due to the reduced lattice thermal conductivity from enhanced phonon scattering at the grain interfaces of the bulk materials, the maximum ZT value of the Cu3Sb0.98Sn0.02Se4 bulk materials reached 0.50 at 575 K.

Abstract:We report remarkably enhanced thermoelectric performance of Te doped Cu2Se in midtemperature range. Through ball-milling process followed by spark plasma sintering (SPS), nanoscale Cu2Te clusters were embeded in the matrix of Cu2Se, inducing a drastic enhancement of thermoelectric performance by reducing the thermal conductivity without degrading the power factor. A large ZT value of 1.9 was achieved at 873 K for Cu2Se1.9Te0.1, which is about 2 times larger than that of the pure Cu2Se. The nanoscale heat management by Cu2Te nanoclusters in superionic conductors opens up an avenue for thermoelectric materials research.

Abstract:Abstract Thermoelectric materials can realize direct conversion between heat and electricity, showing excellent potential for waste heat recovery. Cu 2 Se is a typical superionic conductor thermoelectric material having extraordinary ZT values, but its superionic feature causes poor service stability and low mobility. Here, we reported a fast preparation method of self-propagating high-temperature synthesis to realize in situ compositing of BiCuSeO and Cu 2 Se to optimize the service stability. Additionally, using the interface design by introducing graphene in these composites, the carrier mobility could be obviously enhanced, and the strong phonon scatterings could lead to lower lattice thermal conductivity. Ultimately, the Cu 2 Se-BiCuSeO-graphene composites presented excellent thermoelectric properties with a ZT max value of ~2.82 at 1000 K and a ZT ave value of ~1.73 from 473 K to 1000 K. This work provides a facile and effective strategy to largely improve the performance of Cu 2 Se-based thermoelectric materials, which could be further adopted in other thermoelectric systems.

Abstract:Cu2Se is an attractive thermoelectric material due to its layered structure, low cost, environmental compatibility, and non-toxicity. These traits make it a promising replacement for conventional thermoelectric materials in large-scale applications. This study focuses on preparing Cu2Se flexible thin films through in situ magnetron sputtering technology while carefully optimizing key preparation parameters, and explores the physical mechanism of thermoelectric property enhancement, especially the power factor. The films are deposited onto flexible polyimide substrates. Experimental findings demonstrate that films grown at a base temperature of 200 °C exhibit favorable performance. Furthermore, annealing heat treatment effectively regulates the Cu element content in the film samples, which reduces carrier concentration and enhances the Seebeck coefficient, ultimately improving the power factor of the materials. Compared to the unannealed samples, the sample annealed at 300 °C exhibited a significant increase in room temperature Seebeck coefficient, rising from 9.13 μVK-1 to 26.73 μVK-1. Concurrently, the power factor improved from 0.33 μWcm-1K-2 to 1.43 μWcm-1K-2.

Abstract:We investigate the thermoelectric properties of CuGaTe2/xCu(2)Se composites in a moderate temperature range. The results indicate that the introduction of Cu2Se remarkably lowers the thermal conductivity of the composite system. Especially, the thermal conductivity of CuGaTe2/3 vol% Cu2Se decreases to 0.54 W m(-1) K-1 at 859 K, which allows its ZT to reach 1.2 at 834 K.

Abstract:Cu3SbSe4, a promising p-type thermoelectric (TE) material consisting of earth-abundant, nontoxic, cost-efficient and eco-friendly constituent elements. However, its low TE performance is relatively poor because of the low carrier concentration and mobility. Herein, we synergistically optimize the electrical and thermal transport properties of Cu3SbSe4 via embedding nanoscale Sb2Se3. The Sb2Se3 nanophase markedly increases the carrier concentration and carrier effective mass simultaneously, resulting in a higher power factor of ∼1100 μW m−1 K−2. Surprisingly, Sb2Se3 nanophase induces high-density phase boundaries and dislocations, which significantly depress the lattice thermal conductivity. The multiple effects of incorporation of Sb2Se3 boost Cu3SbSe4 to an outstanding ZT value of ∼0.86 at 673 K for Cu3SbSe4 +1.5 mol% Sb2Se3 composite, which is ∼1.70 times as high as that of pristine Cu3SbSe4. It is highly remarkable that Cu3SbSe4 with nanoscale Sb2Se3 is mechanically robust, showing the Vickers hardness (Hv) and fracture toughness (KIC) of ∼2.54 GPa and ∼0.73 ± 0.02 MPa m1⁄2, which are ∼20% and ∼12% higher than those of pristine Cu3SbSe4, respectively. This work provides guidance for enhancing the comprehensive TE and mechanical properties of the copper-based chalcogenides by embedding nanophases.

Abstract:BiCuSeO oxyselenide is a promising oxide-based thermoelectric material in the moderate temperature range, but the low electrical conductivity inhibits its further application in the field of thermoelectric materials. In this paper, we report on the effects that composite structures have an enhancement to the electrical conductivity of BiCuSeO. Here, a series of two-phase nanocomposites comprising of BiCuSeO and Cu2Se have been synthesized by SPS. Images obtained via electron microscope reveal that the two constituents form the unique composites while retaining their individual morphological identities. Owing to the composite structure with a highly conductive nanoscale of copper selenides and sub-micrometer scale BiCuSeO, an enhancement to the thermoelectric performance is achieved. The ZT at 823 K is increased from 0.33 for pristine BiCuSeO to 0.44 by inserting 20 vol% Cu2Se. Our results state that the composite structure is an effective method to enhance the performance of BiCuSeO. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Interface‐Enhanced High‐Temperature Thermoelectricity in Cu1.99Se/B4C Composites with Synergistically Improved Mechanical Strength

Abstract:A facile interface engineering strategy is proposed to boost the thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) of copper selenide by incorporation of B4C nanoparticles. The presence of B4C nanoparticles and complex interfaces gives rise to pronounced interfacial trapping effects and nano‐dispersion effects, leading to synergistical enhancement in both the high‐temperature thermoelectric performance and mechanical properties. Degenerate semiconductors usually demonstrate a metallic‐like conduction behavior, showing limited carrier mobility at high temperatures. Herein, by incorporating B4C nanoparticles into the Cu1.99Se system, an unusual switch from the "degenerate" to "non‐degenerate" semiconducting behavior is revealed as a result of the engineered interfaces. Heterogeneous interfaces and disordered Cu2Se amorphous phases are introduced in the Cu1.99Se/B4C composites, which generate a trapping effect against the mobile Cu ions, leading to a distinctive "hump" signature for electrical conductivity. Benefiting from this rare high‐temperature thermoelectric response, a high power factor is obtained due to reduced carrier concentration and enhanced mobility, and low lattice thermal conductivity is retained because of relatively stronger anharmonic lattice vibrations. Consequently, the Cu1.99Se + 0.9 vol.% B4C sample at least achieves a maximum thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) of 2.6 at 1025 K with synergistically enhanced mechanical robustness. The present interface engineering strategy may be applicable to other thermoelectric materials with ionic migration characteristics.

High thermoelectric performance and low thermal conductivity in Cu 2- x Na x Se bulk materials with micro-pores

Abstract:Cu 2 Se has been considered as a promising thermoelectric material due to its unique structure and excellent performance. Herein, a series of Cu 2- x Na x Se ( x = 0, 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, and 0.04) polycrystalline samples were synthesized by combining hydrothermal synthesis and hot pressing to investigate the effects of Na-doping on the microstructure and thermoelectric properties of Cu 2 Se. Compared with the pristine Cu 2 Se, the Na-doping introduces numerous micro-pores that can optimize the thermal transport performance by strong phonon scattering effects of interfaces between the micro-pores and grains. The doped samples have excellent electrical properties and low thermal conductivity. The maximum value of ZT = 2.1 is obtained at 973 K for the Cu 1.96 Na 0.04 Se sample with nominal composition. The results confirm that introducing Na into Cu 2 Se is an effective and convenient strategy to improve the thermoelectric performance of the Cu 2 Se alloy by decreasing the lattice thermal conductivity.
Ultralow Thermal Conductivity and Extraordinary Thermoelectric Performance Realized in Codoped Cu3SbSe4 by Plasma Spark Sintering

Abstract:Cu3SbSe4-based materials have attracted much attention for thermoelectric power generation in the mid-temperature range due to their low cost, ecofriendliness, and abundant elements on the earth. However, the peak figure of merit (ZT) for the Cu3SbSe4-based system prepared by the fusion method is usually smaller than unity because of its high thermal conductivity. Here, we show that through a coprecipitation method combined with spark plasma sintering ultrafine-grained Cu3Sb0.94Sn0.06Se4-ySy (y = 0, 0.5) embedded with Cu3SbSe3 nanoprecipitates can be prepared. Due to the ultralow thermal conductivity and enhanced Seebeck coefficient, a record-high ZT value of 1.32 is achieved for the sample Cu3Sb0.94Sn0.06Se3.5Se0.5. The ultralow thermal conductivity is attributed to the enhanced phonon scattering caused by the nanoprecipitates and fine grains of the samples, and the improved Seebeck coefficient originates from the enhancement of electronic density-of-state effective mass. Present results demonstrate that excellent thermoelectric performance can be realized in dual-substituted and fine-grained Cu3Sb0.94Sn0.06Se4-ySy with nanoprecipitates.

High Thermoelectric Performance in Cu2Se/CDs Hybrid Materials

Abstract:By embedding organic compound carbon nanodots (CDs) into the inorganic compound Cu2Se, a series of Cu2Se + x wt% CDs (x = 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, and 0.8) nanopowders are obtained through hydrothermal synthesis and then carried out by hot-pressing. The effects of CDs dispersant on resistivity, Seebeck coefficients, and thermal conductivity are investigated. It is found that the resistivity deteriorates, but the Seebeck coefficient increases greatly due to the energy filtering effect of carbon nanodots in the matrix. Higher Seebeck coefficients also lead to higher power factors compared with the matrix. Importantly, carbon nanodots are well distributed in the matrix without obvious agglomeration, and suppress the recrystallization of Cu2Se. With increasing of the content of CDs, phonon scattering increases due to the newly formed interfaces between CDs dispersant and Cu2Se matrix, which reduces thermal conductivity effectively. Correspondingly, the lowest total thermal conductivity reaches 0.45 W/Km at 973 K when x = 0.8. Because of the relatively high power factor and exceptional low thermal conductivity, the Cu2Se + 0.8 wt% CDs sample presents an excellent ZT value of 1.98. The present work indicates that CDs are novel and effective dispersants, and could be furtherly extended to use in other thermoelectric materials. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The concept of a 'phonon-liquid electron-crystal' has received significant interest in recent years, with copper selenide (Cu 2 Se) emerging as one of the high-performance thermoelectric materials within this framework. This study focuses on the fabrication of Cu 2 Se bulk pellets through a low-temperature sintering method known as cold sintering process (CSP). The introduction of a liquid phase (thiol-amine solution) in this process facilitates the dissolution and precipitation of ion/atom clusters, resulting in sample densification. Remarkably, a sample density of nearly 90 % is achieved at a low sintering temperature of only 473 K. Furthermore, this CSP approach preserves the morphology of the Cu 2 Se precursor powders and effectively inhibits grain growth. Consequently, the lattice thermal conductivity of the CSP samples is significantly reduced, attributed to enhanced grain boundary phonon scattering. This leads to a substantial improvement in the figure-of-merit ( ZT ), increasing from 0.65 at 800 K in the hot-pressed sample to 2.13 at 800 K in the CSP sample. The advantages of CSP can be extended beyond Cu 2 Se, as it holds promise for enhancing the performance of various high-performance thermoelectric materials.

Abstract:(Ag,Sn) co-doped Cu3SbSe4 nanocrystals are obtained via a facile microwave-assisted solvothermal method, and their thermoelectric properties are investigated in the temperature range from 300 K to 623 K. Sn-doping on Sb sites dramatically increases the carrier concentration and thus the electrical conductivity, promoting the thermoelectric power factor. Further alloying with Ag on Cu sites strongly suppresses the lattice thermal conductivity close to the glass limit. Aside from point defect scattering, such reduction in lattice thermal conductivity largely relies on the formation of Cu2-xSe nanoinclusions, which serve as additional scattering centers for phonons. Overall, the sample with the nominal composition of Cu2.8Ag0.2Sb0.95Sn0.05Se4 reaches a minimum lattice thermal conductivity of 0.27 W m-1 K-1 and a maximum zT of 1.18 at 623 K, which is the best result for the Cu3SbSe4-based materials in the same temperature region. Our results demonstrate that the microwave-assisted synthesis method is capable of fabricating Cu based ternary compounds with high thermoelectric performance.

Abstract:Thermoelectric materials (TMs) can uniquely convert waste heat into electricity, which provides a potential solution for the global energy crisis that is increasingly severe. Bulk Cu2Se, with ionic conductivity of Cu ions, exhibits a significant enhancement of its thermoelectric figure of merit zT by a factor of ~3 near its structural transition around 400 K. Here, we show a systematic study of the electronic structure of Cu2Se and its temperature evolution using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Upon heating across the structural transition, the electronic states near the corner of the Brillouin zone gradually disappear, while the bands near the centre of Brillouin zone shift abruptly towards high binding energies and develop an energy gap. Interestingly, the observed band reconstruction well reproduces the temperature evolution of the Seebeck coefficient of Cu2Se, providing an electronic origin for the drastic enhancement of the thermoelectric performance near 400 K. The current results not only bridge among structural phase transition, electronic structures, and thermoelectric properties in a condensed matter system, but also provide valuable insights into the search and design of new generation of thermoelectric materials.

Abstract:Cu2Se is a p-type semiconducting compound that possesses excellent thermoelectric properties which exhibit great potential for practical applications. In recent years, there have been many ways to improve thermoelectric properties. Reducing the thermal conductivity is a very effective way to obtain high performance thermoelectric materials. In this study, a series of Cu2-xLixSe (x = 0, 0.01, 0.02 and 0.03) polycrystalline bulk samples were successfully prepared by hot-pressing the nanopowders made by hydrothermal synthesis to investigate the doping effects of Li on the phase structure, microstructure and thermoelectric properties of Cu2Se. Compared with the Li-free Cu2Se, the introduction of Li element increases the Seebeck coefficient. Importantly, both nanopores and Li substitution were observed which can reduce (L)via increased scattering phonons. At 973 K, the Cu1.98Li0.02Se sample presented an excellent ZT of 2.14.
Colloidal Synthesis of Cu2CdSnSe4 Nanocrystals and Hot-Pressing to Enhance the Thermoelectric Figure-of-merit.

Abstract:We report a solution-based synthesis of monodispersed Cu(2)CdSnSe(4) nanocrystals and a study on the thermoelectric properties of these wide-band-gap dense materials compacted from nanocrystals for the first time. With the help of copper dopants and selenium vacancies generated during wet-chemistry synthesis, a large increment in the power factor is observed, and the dimensionless figure-of-merit ZT reaches a peak value of 0.65 at 450 °C.
Realizing Enhanced Thermoelectric Performance and Hardness in Icosahedral Cu 5 FeS 4− x Se x with High‐Density Twin Boundaries

Abstract:Bornite (Cu5 FeS4 ) is an Earth-abundant, nontoxic thermoelectric material. Herein, twin engineering and Se alloying are combined in order to further improve its thermoelectric performance. Cu5 FeS4-x Sex (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.4) icosahedral nanoparticles, containing high-density twin boundaries, have been synthesized by a colloidal method. Spark plasma sintering retains twin boundaries in the pellets sintered from Cu5 FeS4-x Sex colloidal powders. Thermoelectric property measurement demonstrates that alloying Se increases the carrier concentration, leading to much-improved power factor in Se-substituted Cu5 FeS4 , for example, 0.84 mW m-1 K-2 at 726 K for Cu5 FeS3.6 Se0.4 ; low lattice thermal conductivity is also achieved, due to intrinsic structural complexity, distorted crystal structure, and existing twin boundaries and point defects. As a result, a maximum zT of 0.75 is attained for Cu5 FeS3.6 Se0.4 at 726 K, which is about 23% higher than that of Cu5 FeS4 and compares favorably to that of reported Cu5 FeS4 -based materials. In addition, the Cu5 FeS4-x Sex samples containing twin boundaries also obtain improved hardness compared to the ones fabricated by melting-annealing or ball milling. This work demonstrates an effective twin engineering-composition tuning strategy toward enhanced thermoelectric and mechanical properties of Cu5 FeS4 -based materials.
