Abstract:Whilst electrolytic MnO2 with a high capacity draws great attention recently, the shuttle reactions between the mediator additives in the electrolytes with zinc and MnO2 are often overlooked. In this work, neutral acetate electrolytes with iodide mediator are tested for electrolytic MnO2-Zn system on thin-film batteries. With a limited amount of electrolyte, the shuttle reactions caused by iodide mediator becomes more obvious, which results in low Coulombic efficiencies and shortens shelf-life.

Abstract:Abstract Lithium-ion batteries have been the most promising energy storage technology in the field of new energy due to their advantages such as high specific energy. With the further expansion of the application range, higher requirements are placed on the low-temperature performance of the battery. The development of suitable electrolyte additives to improve the interface structure of the electrode and the electrolyte is an effective and economically feasible method to improve the low-temperature performance of the battery. This article reviews the research progress of low-temperature electrolyte additives for lithium-ion batteries in recent years. It summarizes the action mechanism of low-temperature electrolyte additives from three aspects: organic solvent additives, lithium salt additives, and new additives. The development of low-temperature electrolyte additives in the next step was prospected.

Abstract:Strengthening water (H2O) interaction is a universal strategy for reducing H2O reactivity, yet often at the expense of kinetics. Here, we unveiled the controllable modulation of molecular structures in aqueous electrolytes and their tailorable electrochemical performance in high-energy aqueous batteries. The H-bond properties and special distributions are identified as crucial parameters to decouple the electrochemical stability and the transport properties of Li+ in the aqueous-based electrolytes. It is found that the mildly solvating ethylene glycol diethyl ether (DEE) is capable of balancing both high-energy Li-ion batteries with a greatly extended electrochemical window of 1.4-5.2 V vs. Li+/Li and high ionic conductivity of 7.2 mS cm(-1) at room temperature with a low salt concentration (1.57 mol/L). LiMn2O4||Li4Ti5O12 aqueous cells deliver outstanding cycling performance over 300 cycles at 1C. One Ah pouch cell is demonstrated with a high energy density of 76.76 Wh kg(-1) at 0.2C and stable cycling performance at room temperature and a low temperature of -20 degrees C. This work provides new insights and strategies to design advanced electrolytes for rechargeable batteries.

Abstract:With the progress of science and technology and the needs of the development of human society, lead-acid batteries (LABs) have attracted the attention of mathematicians at home and abroad because of their low cost, simple manufacturing, high recycling rate and good safety. Through continuous research, many related works and patents have been produced, and then they are most widely used in the field of secondary batteries. However, in the actual production and application, it is found that LABs have the disadvantages of short cycle life, low specific energy, poor low temperature performance and easy corrosion, which greatly limits their application. In this paper, the current research status and main shortcomings of LABs are analyzed, and the related research work of improving the chemical properties of LABs in recent years are systematically reviewed from the aspects of grid composition and structure, lead paste formula, additives, curing and formation process, etc., which provides guidance and ideas for the preparation and engineering application of high-performance LABs, Finally, the challenges and future improvement technologies of LABs are prospected.

Cathode–Electrolyte Interfacial Processes in Lithium∥Sulfur Batteries under Lean Electrolyte Conditions

Abstract:The implementation of a low electrolyte/sulfur (E/S) ratio is essential to achieving high specific energy for lithium∥sulfur (Li∥S) batteries. In reality, however, the lean electrolyte condition results in low achievable capacity and inferior cyclability. In this study, we probe the interfacial processes on the sulfur cathode under the lean electrolyte condition using operando electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and a galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT). The operando EIS reveals a significant and rapid increase in the charge-transfer resistance during the transition from high-order polysulfides to low-order ones at a low E/S ratio, which is induced by a kinetic bottleneck at the interphase due to Li-ion mass transfer limitation. The GITT results confirm the kinetic bottleneck by revealing a large discharge overpotential during the transition phase. We further demonstrate that improving the adsorption of dissolved high-order polysulfides, a key step in the interfacial processes, can alleviate the kinetic limitation, thus enhancing the achievable capacity under the lean electrolyte condition.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries afford great promise on achieving practical high energy density beyond lithium-ion batteries. Lean-electrolyte conditions constitute the prerequisite for achieving high-energy-density Li-S batteries but inevitably deteriorates battery performances, especially the sulfur cathode kinetics. Herein, the polarizations of the sulfur cathode are systematically decoupled to identify the key kinetic limiting factor in lean-electrolyte Li-S batteries. Concretely, an electrochemical impedance spectroscopy combined galvanostatic intermittent titration technique method is developed to decouple the cathodic polarizations into activation, concentration, and ohmic parts. Therein, activation polarization during lithium sulfide nucleation emerges as the dominant polarization as the electrolyte-to-sulfur ratio (E/S ratio) decreases, and the sluggish interfacial charge transfer kinetics is identified as the main reason for degraded cell performances under lean-electrolyte conditions. Accordingly, a lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide electrolyte is proposed to decrease activation polarization, and Li-S batteries adopting this electrolyte provide a discharge capacity of 985 mAh g-1 under a low E/S ratio of 4 μL mg-1 at 0.2 C. This work identifies the key kinetic limiting factor of lean-electrolyte Li-S batteries and provides guidance on designing rational promotion strategies to achieve advanced Li-S batteries.

Abstract:In order to improve the electrochemical performance of iron-chromium flow battery, a series of electrolytes with x M FeCl2 + x M CrCl3 + 3.0 M HCl (x = 0.5, 0.75, 1.0, 1.25) and 1.0 M FeCl2 + 1.0 M CrCl3 + y M HCl (y = 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0) are prepared, and the effect of electrolyte concentration on the electrochemical performance of iron-chromium flow battery are firstly investigated. The viscosity of electrolyte increases along with the increasing concentration of FeCl2, CrCl3 and HCl, however, the corresponding conductivity decreases with the increasing concentration of FeCl2 and CrCl3 but increases with the increasing HCl concentration. It is worth noting that the electrolyte with 1.0 M FeCl2, 1.0 M CrCl3 and 3.0 M HCl presents the best electrochemical performance due to the synergistic effect of viscosity, conductivity and electrochemical activity. Most importantly, iron-chromium flow battery with the optimized electrolyte presents excellent battery efficiency (coulombic efficiency: 97.4%; energy efficiency: 81.5%) when the operating current density is high up to 120 mA cm−2. This work can improve the battery performance of iron-chromium flow battery more efficiently, and further provide theoretical guidance and data support to its engineering application.

Abstract:The world's energy system is changing dramatically. Li-ion battery, as a powerful and highly effective energy storage technique, is crucial to the new energy revolution for its continuously expanding application in electric vehicles and grids. Over the entire lifetime of these power batteries, it is essential to monitor their state of health not only for the predicted mileage and safety management of the running electric vehicles, but also for an "end-of-life" evaluation for their repurpose. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) has been widely used to diagnose the health state of batteries quickly and nondestructively. In this review, we have outlined the working principles of several electrochemical impedance techniques and further evaluated their application prospects to achieve the goal of nondestructive testing of battery health. EIS can scientifically and reasonably perform real-time monitoring and evaluation of electric vehicle power batteries in the future and play an important role in vehicle safety and battery gradient utilization.

Abstract:Anode-free lithium metal batteries (AFLMBs) have attracted great attention owing to their higher energy density than conventional lithium metal batteries (LMBs). Unfortunately, the present AFLMBs still suffer from overall inferior Coulombic efficiencies (CEs) to those of LMBs due to the more severe dendrite growth and more unstable solid-electrolyte interface (SEI) formation at the anode side, which is an urgent issue to be solved. In this study, we explored the effect of increasing concentration and adding 0.1M LiNO3 additive on SEI layer and on Li plating/stripping efficiency using the low-concentration (0.4 M) tetraethylene glycol dimethyl ether (TEGDME)-based electrolyte in an AFLMB anode half-cell configuration. The influence of the oxidative subsequent SEI formation above 2.2 V vs. Li/Li+, called as "OSS", was also discussed. It was found that Li plating/stripping stability was greatly improved by either blocking OSS or adding LiNO3, while increasing concentration to 2.0 M did not function well. The formation of the protective Li2O-based subsequent SEI layers when blocking reaction OSS is considered to guarantee the improved stability of Li plating/stripping, while LiNO3 additive helps sustaining the existence of Li2O even with the occurrence of OSS, therefore substantially improving the CE performance. Meanwhile, the effect of increasing concentration to 2.0 M in the existence of 0.1 M LiNO3 additive shifted the dominant SEI species from Li2O to LiF, further assuring the enhanced CE performance in the low-concentration TEGDME-based electrolytes.

Abstract:Zn-based batteries attract extensive attention as the next-generation energy storage devices for both electronics and large power grids due to the high capacity, energy density, low cost, and safety derived from the inherent properties of metallic Zn and the safety of aqueous electrolytes. Herein, the performance variations and critical issues of the Zn electrodes in the alkaline and neutral/slightly acid electrolytes are systematically investigated by evaluating the cycle stability, electrode reaction kinetics, and stripping/plating reversibility in three kinds of electrolytes, including ZnSO 4 , Zn(CF 3 SO 3 ) 2 , and KOH+Zn(CH 3 COO) 2 . The lifespan of the Zn electrode in the neutral/slightly acid electrolytes is >1400% higher than the one in the alkaline electrolyte at a current density of 1 mA cm −2 . However, the Zn electrode in the alkaline solution exhibits better reaction kinetics and low polarization. Besides, in the neutral/slightly acid electrolytes, higher coulombic efficiency is obtained, corresponding to better stripping/plating reversibility. Therefore, research in neutral/slightly acid electrolytes should focus on elevating the electrode kinetics and reducing polarization, while in alkaline electrolytes, the dendrite and the hydrogen evolution and self-discharge should be treated to elevate the calendar life and reversibility. This work provides a guideline for further construction of high-performance Zn electrodes in different electrolyte systems.

Abstract:Aqueous batteries (ABs) have received increasing attention for large-scale energy storage owing to inherent safety, environmental friendliness, high ionic conductivity and low cost of the electrolytes. However, they display low discharge capacity and power density in low-temperature conditions, or even cannot operate normally, which severely limits their practical applications. Up to now, some strategies are reported to improve the low-temperature performance of ABs. In this review, we firstly clarify the intrinsic effect of low temperature environment on the battery from perspective of thermodynamics and kinetics. Then, the reported strategies for improving the low-temperature performance of ABs are summarized, including electrode materials design, electrolytes optimization, and modification of other components (e. g. binder, separator, and conductor). Finally, this review shares our perspectives on potential directions for further improving the low-temperature performance of ABs.

Abstract:The core of the design of high‐performance low‐temperature electrolytes is to regulate and balance the four fundamental interactions; cationsolvent, anionsolvent, cationanion, and solventsolvent interactions. This review for the first time analyzes the physicochemical properties of low‐temperature electrolytes and summarizes the relevant research progress according to their interactions. The design of low‐temperature electrolytes is a key technology to improve the low‐temperature performance of electrochemical energy storage devices and expand their application fields. However, the current design strategies for low‐temperature electrolytes remain in the optimization of formula, without systematic and in‐depth consideration of the internal relationship between the fundamental interactions and performances of electrolytes at low temperature. Here, starting from the four fundamental interactions among cations, anions, and solvents in the electrolyte, this review for the first time analyzes the temperature‐dependent mechanisms of their interactions and corresponding physicochemical properties of electrolytes from atomic insights. Then, the research progress in low‐temperature electrolytes is summarized according to the relationships of these interactions. The possible new development directions in the future are also pointed out. This review provides a theoretical reference for the design of low‐temperature electrolytes.

Abstract:Lithium ion batteries as clean energies have attracted considerable attention. However, the disadvantage of low-temperature performance restricts its development, which becomes one of the popular aspects for the further studies. Recent work on low-temperature performance of lithiumion batteries were reviewed. The effect of materials (i.e., cathode/anode, electrolytes and additives) on the low-temperature performance of lithium-ion batteries and the related mechanism were discussed. The manufacture techniques were also compared. Abstract:With the highest energy density ever among all sorts of commercialized rechargeable batteries, Li-ion batteries (LIBs) have stimulated an upsurge utilization in 3C devices, electric vehicles, and stationary energy-storage systems. However, a high performance of commercial LIBs based on ethylene carbonate electrolytes and graphite anodes can only be achieved at above -20 °C, which restricts their applications in harsh environments. Here, a comprehensive research progress and in-depth understanding of the critical factors leading to the poor low-temperature performance of LIBs is provided; the distinctive challenges on the anodes, electrolytes, cathodes, and electrolyte-electrodes interphases are sorted out, with a special focus on Li-ion transport mechanism therein. Finally, promising strategies and solutions for improving low-temperature performance are highlighted to maximize the working-temperature range of the next-generation high-energy Li-ion/metal batteries.

Abstract:Anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFC) have received significant attention for their promised low production cost, largely enabled by the facile kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction in alkaline electrolytes and the broader selection of potential ionomers. 1,2 The performance of AEMFCs has been improved significantly by utilizing AEM with high ion exchange capacity (IEC) and optimizing membrane electrode structures. 3 However, some fundamental issues limiting the performance of AEMFCs need to be better understood, especially the reaction kinetics at the catalyst-ionomer interface and the transport process at the multi-phase boundaries in the membrane electrode assembly (MEA). 4,5 In this talk, we will present a systematic diagnostic study of the critical performance-limiting factors in AEMFC. We will discuss the reaction kinetics at the Pt/ionomer interface and the oxygen transport characteristics of the ionomer layer based on electrochemical data. In addition, we correlate the electrode pore structure, reaction kinetics, and mass transfer behavior with the cell performance based on the analysis of a series of MEA with varied multi-phase boundary designs. Further, experimental data will be presented with decoupled polarization behavior of both the anode and cathode of working AEMFCs. The results reveal that the deteriorated mass transport at the anode and the restricted reaction kinetic at the cathode are the crucial factors limiting the performance of AEMFC, which need to be addressed with high priority. Abstract:Abstract Among various rechargeable batteries, the lithium-ion battery (LIB) stands out due to its high energy density, long cycling life, in addition to other outstanding properties. However, the capacity of LIB drops dramatically at low temperatures (LTs) below 0 °C, thus restricting its applications as a reliable power source for electric vehicles in cold climates and equipment used in the aerospace. The electrolyte engineering has proved to be one of the most effective approaches to mitigate LIB performance degradation at LTs. In this review, we summarize the important factors contributing to the deterioration in Li + transport and capacity utilization at LTs while systematically categorize the solvents, salts and additives reported in the literature. Strategies to improve the Li + transport kinetics, in the bulk electrolyte and across the interphases, are discussed. In particular, the formation mechanism of solid electrolyte interphase and its functionality for LT electrolytes are analyzed. Perspectives on the future evolution of this area are also provided. Abstract:Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) are promising candidates for large-scale energy storage systems as their high safety, environmentally-friendly, and low-cost. Nevertheless, the hydrogen evolution reaction, corrosion reactions, and dendrite growth on the zinc metal anode severely hindered the commercialization of AZIBs. In recent years, numerous reports have demonstrated that the above issues can be effectively and cost-efficiently resolved through electrolyte regulation. The electrolyte in the batteries can be classified as bulk electrolyte and electrolyte double layer (EDL) electrolyte. Additionally, the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation on the zinc metal anode is significantly affected by the composition and properties of the electrolyte. However, a complete macroscopic insight into the diverse electrolyte design methods related to the three aforementioned aspects is still lacking. Herein, after thoroughly explaining the fundamental issues associated with zinc metal anodes in aqueous electrolytes, we provide a detailed summary of three electrolyte regulation methods: solvation structure regulation, which addresses the bulk electrolyte; EDL regulation, which focuses on the EDL electrolyte; and SEI regulation, which targets the SEI. Additionally, an overview of prospective research directions in the development of electrolyte regulation methods is offered. This review aims to serve as a reference for researchers in future electrolyte design.

Abstract:Abstract The initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE) of electrode materials is closely related to the energy density of lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs). However, some promising electrode materials for next generation LIBs suffer from low ICE, which inevitably hinders their practical application. Among the discovered modified strategies for LIBs, electrolyte optimization has attracted extensive attention due to its facile operation process. Herein, the role of ICE in LIBs is first analyzed. Subsequently, the recent progress on effective electrolyte optimization strategies for boosting ICE in LIB is summarized (including the optimization of lithium salt, salt concentration, solvent, and electrolyte additive). Finally, future research directions of electrolyte optimization for boosting ICE are proposed. This review provides valuable guidance for developing advanced electrolyte for LIBs.
